Wichita is also really laid back, for Kansas being a red state. If you look at a map, it's basically liberal in larger urban areas, Wichita, Hutchinson, Lawrence, Manhattan, the whole KCK area.
So the urban populations are always butting heads with conservatives when it comes to social issues.
George Tiller was a widely known abortion provider in Wichita, for decades. Until some nut from Missouri, traveled to Wichita to assassinate Dr. Tiller in the vestibule of his church on Sunday morning. I'm just using this as an example of how much more liberal Wichita is, than most realize. His clinic was also bombed in 1994, again by some out of state nut bags.
Again ICT is super laid back. We had peaceful protests, with 0 rioting or looting and a couple incidents of vandalism.
We're also pretty smart and educated. Wichita has consistently voted no on fluoridating our local water supply. Because we actually did our research and found that fluoride only works topically on teeth, and toothpaste already has fluoride, so there's no reason why we need fluoride constantly circulating through our blood.

I grew up here and I have beautiful memories of simple winters and kansas usummers filled with swimming pool outings and bicycle rides. Lots of Fireworks on the 4th. Wichita was inhabited by many lebanese and the restaurants such as Bella Luna, Le monde and smaller little cafes are fun. It is a simple town where one can live well, travel abd not pay a ton for cost of living. Wichita is close-ish to the ozarks, Colorado making it a good hub. happy traveling!

Got back from Wichita. It was a good experience & can't wait to get back. We visited Wichita State University which was very clean, had an collegish atmosphere with a mix of old and updated collegy buildings and new deluxe sports facilities. The riverwalk is extremely well done. The highlight was the Keeper of the Plains at night with the lighted bowls of tall fire - very cool along with the crowd that gathered at dusk to witness. Walked around Sedgwick Park with its left natural lake sized ponds - very peaceful and relaxing. It was fun to tell people in our similar sized midwest home town we were planning a visit to Wichita - they would scwinch their noses and ask in a amazement - why Wichita? San Fran, LA & Seattle have better reputations - been to all & those are real shetholes unlike Wichita sights which seem relatively clean and uncrowded. The answer to your question is that unlike Seattle etc I didn't have the constant terror of crime, people constantly begging for money, drugged out people staggering around everywhere, not having to keep out of the way of crazed yuppies trying to escape downtown, a cold impersonal dehumanizing feeling of being invisible, death defying clogged freeways, surrounded by graffiti covered and burned and half burnt buildings & lots and gouging prices for everything.
