Absolutely amazing performance. Roger running there is the visual and audio representation that man is made to run long distances. So great to see him running in time with the energy of a superb group of musicians. The Who's lyrics are as unbeatable as their sound. Nothing like them in modern day music...Not many places you can comfortably display the Union Jack at the moment, never any problem with this bunch of blokes... 💙🇬🇧🎤🇬🇧💙
Is there anyone else in rock history at age 45 who could sing with that much sustained power and control while running in place for something like 3 minutes, without ever appearing to be the slightest out of breath? Even Mick Jagger at his most athletic couldn't top this performance. He did at 45 what most rockers dream of doing at 23. And still smoking' hot.

just saw that 1975 weasel trying to swing his mic and ended up almost choking himself to death, i think i now can see how difficult it is to swing a mic like Rog.
These old progressive rock and roll bands were some of the most technically sound and musically tight and had the most electrifying energy live; they set the bar on how to do it and as far as I'm concerned no one has even close to matching it since and for me they include the following.⬇️ The Who Jethro Tull Pink Floyd Yes Emerson Lake and Palmer
...this was the last part of their full Tommy concert (reunion 1989 in LA) when they came back out and played classic The Who songs. Yes it was a massive stage show. Do yourself a favour and get the entire thing on DVD, its amazing!
Scott is right. Moon was sloppy, lacked definition, and is the last guy you would hire as a drum instructor. If you saw him live, however, he was without peer and you never forgot him.
He does a tremendous job attempting to replace one of the most inimitable drummers ever. Zak is pretty good, too. Kenny - sorry Kenny, nice guy, wrong band. I guess it's my misfortune that I've seen every Who drummer - except the Loon.
The appeal is his dedication and professionalism and pure talent. It doesn't matter what your gender is, he is a magnet for anyone who appreciates his gifts.
This is one of my favorite songs by The WHO since I was in high school and up to now nearing my senior year it still is one of my favorite rock songs which was introduce in the early 70's in England. The WHO still rocks.
I know this is from years ago, but it has to be one of the best ever live performances and such a great energy from the song and the band that this has to be timeless. It must make other performances by them a little less, and I wish I was there to hear them do it. They are FAB!
Keith Moon cannot be replaced because of his hart, passion & spirit. Also, he was the first one to play rock tunes with this unmatched style. Zac Starkey was very good for the job and he seemed to enjoy it as well. I agree, comparisons are useless but Simon Phillips is really somenthing else (I am sorry guys, I also love Keith Moon) in terms of technical skills as well as musicianship. Keith was a dynamite but this is another level of drumming.
Remarkable....one of the all-time great rock performances! Now I feel speechless....as I should be, After this and the Beatles and the Stones, rock and roll should have called it quits,
@@nigelpisswater484especially on this show, i have to crank up the volume for it to be audible, wish there's a bass track for this so i could edit it out
Simon Phillips really rocks here! Wish there would have been more dynamic drum sounds mixed to the tv broadcast! Amazing version mixing drumming from original and he's own progressive style of he's own!
I noticed Pete Townshed's hand is still bandaged up from when he was playing one of Eric Clapton's Strat's during a concert with Eric & accidentally ran the whammy bar in through his hand while he was doing those pin wheels. Nice upload, thanks for posting it...
@The Axe Factor Yeah I've heard that before but evidentially the strat Pete used had one. He might have had the guitar tech remove that block so the tremolo would work for him. Pete did mention that the angle was different than how his are setup. lol I cringed when Pete explained why his hand was bandaged. I think he was on David Letterman's show..

Not much mention of the awesomeness of “the Ox” - awesomeness incarnate! Simon is a beast - really nails Moons early swing if you watch them do my Generation!
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Pete Townsend. He may not be on the top of many great soloists (He’s great), and people will point to his rhythm chops and songwriting instead, but he just keeps getting better and better and (again) my opinion is he’s great…

Wow! First time seeing this footage. Glad that I found this gem. Horns & background singers. Memorable stuff. Good to see John. Miss Keith, of course. Thanks, RUclips.
Watching Simon play with The Who back then makes me realise how great he was with them, especially in comparison to Zack. Nobody can ever replace Keith of course, he was one of a kind, but for me Simon is the only living drummer worthy of sitting on that throne with these guys.
Saw The Who on this 25 Year Anniversary Tour 1989. First saw them on the "It's Hard" Farewell Tour 1982. The last time?? The Who Tour 2000, 18 months before John "The Ox" Entwistle's death. That ended seeing The Who live for me.
One of Pete’s finest compositions. Structurally perfect. Not a wasted note, or a repetition. He is really one of a kind as a composer.
AGREED
Absolutely. Between early versions and the final version, he added the protracted bridge with its guitar and piano parts - genius.
One of the greatest rock bands of ALL TIME!!!❤❤💯💥👊🏾💪👍
This song is my aerobics workout... I watch Roger Daltry run and sip whiskey ❤
I lost my breath watching him run in place while singing, lol
That's funny 😅

I love John’s bass sound here, it’s fantastic.
not loud enough though, i really wanted to hear his bass on Baba O'Riley
Simon Phillips is killing it!!! Great perfomance!
Yes! He really captures the spirit of Moon's drumming while putting his own style into it.
I was 29 and I got to see the who at the top of their game with my best friend. Ah, the 80's....
