I've seen the Kids Are Alright version of WGFA hundreds or perhaps thousands of times. But this edited version of Pete in mid-air as Daltrey goes into THE scream if epic!!! I really can't wait to see The Who at Fenway Park in Boston tomorrow night!!!!!!!
Rock bands like The Who were never intended to last more than a couple of years, but 50 years later and we’re still lapping it up. Thank God for The Who.
Tommy-The Who By NUmbers might be the greatest 5 album streak in rock history. Man I would kill any amount of people to see these guys live in their prime, hell even now they still sound good!
Pete's jump slide after the keyboard break has to be one of the most rock moments in the history of rock. And then you have John at the end looking at Roger and give him a simple nod of, "Well played, mate." What a performance by the band!
Pete Townshend's maniacal guitar playing, leaping and dancing. Just simply legendary. Yet John Entwhistle, often overlooked and forgotten in my view, contrasts Pete with his soulful, Godfather like playing. I love The Who!!!!
He did hurt them over a period of time and has been seen to say that onstage he became possessed and just did what he felt . Entwistle said he would always be watching as he did not want him sliding into him. Amazing this whole band were a lead everything and I don't think people get that. And many bands have stolen much from them , the microphone twirling, smashing drums, and guitars, ??? I am a bass player and in later years found myself marvelling at the Ox and saying why do I bother ? But he was the best bassist of all time !@@jwprimetime9795
Michael Marshall man I agree! I’m 44-the first time I saw The Who was in 1995 when they did the Quadrapehenia (I know i spelled it wrong) tour. I took my dad-we were on the left side by the Ox and I couldn’t take my eyes off his playing. And on Pete’s knees-even though I’ve seen this video many times before today was the first day I kept running the knee slam part back over and over-that landing was so violent and he didn’t flinch. But it’s one of the most insane moves I’ve ever see in a live performance. I just bought tics this am to see The Who in Tampa. Two tics cost me $495. My wife is so pissed and not talking to me now bcuz of spending that much and I knew she would be. I just took the yelling and kept telling myself it’s worth it!!! Lol!
*HAPPY 76th BIRTHDAY... Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend is an English guitarist, singer and composer. He is co-founder, leader, guitarist, secondary lead vocalist and principal songwriter of the Who, one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s. I'm almost 70 years old now and still love these guys. My hair is different but my love ROCK will never die. If I could take one album with me when I leave, it would be WHOS NEXT.

The shit runs right through your body. RIP, John and Keith. Best rock band I've ever seen and heard live. From the first time I saw them as a 15 year old kid in 1965, unti now, I've loved this band.

Some songs you hear on the radio a thousand times don't do it justice, some are just meant to be performed live, this is definitely one of those songs!
It’s human nature to say “ the greatest band” or the “greatest player” or the “ greatest actor” etc etc. The Who are unique among the “Mount Rushmore “ rock bands. They are my favorite band of all. For a million reasons. But the biggest is that - live during 67-75, they were without question the greatest rock group to ever perform. You can’t compare them to Beatles , Stones in terms of mainstream popularity. Or to Zep for their blend of atomic blues with pop integration. The Who were great in the studio with dozens of well known songs and all time great albums. But live they were supernatural. If you listen to anyone with experience and taste in terms of music critique, all are unanimous that The Who were head and shoulders above the others live. No debate.
To say no debate is pure arrogance. The Who was a great live band, and if you force the bottom of the period to 67, you could be right. That said, I don't know if you can testify to this without ever having seen Deep Purple live in the early 70s. They were off the hook good. In 72 I saw the 2nd to last ever concert with Gillian and Glover in Tampa Florida. My mouth hung open for the last 2 hours of the show. They were unbelievable. Give made in Japan a listen sometimes. I think musician for musician, as GREAT as the Who was (and they were great) Purple was even better.
I believe for those of us around in the late 60s - growing up on this music - we're all able to say we saw some of the best of the best bands, ever back when Each contributed to the tapestry of my musical background; I can't take away from any of these bands people have named. To say one was better than another - is to diminish the thing about each we liked. Their unique rock pioneer style (I can't name it - so call it what ever you want )--it's what has made them collectively great of course, but God! I've seen most of these bands --Who, Stones, Deep Purple, Tull, Led Zeppelin----and savor each and every one for their differences. My life was enhanced by all of them!
We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the fold, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again, no, no I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky Though I know that the hypnotized never lie Do ya? Yeaah! There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Is now parting on the right And the beards have all grown longer overnight I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again, no no Yeaaah! Meet the new boss Same as the old boss
For decades I thought he was saying "And the beard's a problem on the road at night'. It certainly was for me, trying to hitch-hike after dark in the 70's. There is a website that lists (supposedly) authentic lyrics that agrees with your version here, but has a slightly different version of the line 'Cause the banners, they all flown in the next war. They say it's 'Cause the banners, they all flown in the LAST war. That's what I remember hearing as well. Many touring bands often update old songs with a new word or phrase to keep up with changes in the world. It's all good. When I first heard Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days" , I thought the creepy voice was saying "One of these days I'm going to dance with your little feet"! Ha-Ha! A few years later I was dancing to Lowell George and his band "Little Feat". HA!
Wish I was in the audience, omg the sheer power & electrical performance, so fantastic! Biggest regret is not seeing them live, whoever did was sure lucky!! 😊
I was lucky enough to see them twice in 1976. The most vial rock band in rock history, most political, most relevant. Best is relative, but as many have said, the Who mattered, largely because of Pete's song writing.
@@williamoliveaux3435 Keith moon would be 72 today, miss him he made me want to be a drummer, iam Still playing at 60, having a few Beers for ya dear boy.
Let's face it Keith was his own enemy. He had his chances to clean up but always found his way to destroy everything around him. Brilliant drummer when 'on' & quite a showman but hell if he was intoxicated and fat. He barely made it through this song.
On their night, The Who are the greatest rock 'n roll band ever. One of the most inventive bands of all time with a truly original rhythm section in both Moon and Entwhistle, a cracking lead singer in Daltrey, and a fabulously anarchic and intense lead guitarist in Townshend. An extremely exciting band to watch as well with many insights to offer about youth and alienation.
Saw this tour in March and Oct 1976 at Portlands Memorial Coliseum. I was only 20 years old and now 64! Still one of the best concerts I have ever seen to date! They started the show with Baba O'riley and ended with this!
I've had friends & acquaintances foolish enough to try and argue against this claim. They might look at their official LP count of, what? 4 studio albums of new material in the 70's. It is to miss the point. Watch the movie. If you like rock, and have a pulse, yours is the only conclusion, Louise Mitchell.
The Who. One of the best live groups ever. I mean, Live at Leeds is so incredible and beautiful... Better than 99% of studio albums ever recorded by any band.
Glad I witnessed great rock concerts back then. When raw guitar complimented screaming vocals. Your body shivered in response to these bands who could deliver. And deliver they did.
He wanted to be known as a bass guitarist rather than a bassist, since he was really playing co-lead lines on that thing with the instrument's treble cranked up.
The Who was a band with a Lead Bass! Effectively, and it really comes through on this song, Entwistle and Moon were the musicians while Daltrey and Townsend, vocals and rhythm guitar, were the showmen and writers. This curious reversal of guitar roles and some politically astute lyrics from Townsend are what made them stand out from a lot of great bands of the era. (I saw them play at Leeds University in 1971 when the Live at Leeds album was recorded and somewhere amongst all that applause is the sound of my hands!)
A very unique band though . The fact that all could play off each other and were never credited for being the gifted people they are /were. I never got Entwistle until later and I am a bass player , but after taking the time , I almost said why do I bother ? he was a master.
It's been many years since i listened to Who's Next but tonight I needed to listen to this. The zenith of rock. All those years i have loved this song and nothing gets close.
Just the best rock song ever by one of the best rock bands ever! Just look at those guys go! All supreme at their own art. Townsend, Daltrey, Moon and Entwhistle. Shivers up the spine for me. Thanks you guys for giving me years of happiness since I was a kid!!!!!
Keith's air drums in the beginning are epic! Also please note Keith has to have his head set duct taped to his head so it does not fly off during the concert!!
@@joycemckay7488 The keyboard parts are all on tape, so Keith is listening to a click track as he plays to stay in sync with the tape. He HATED having to do that, as it locked him in, whereas normally he'd just react to what the other guys were doing.
Just saw them this past Tues night at Cuyahoga Falls (Blossom Music Center) in Ohio!! Enjoy your full moon performance tomorrow! Wish I could see it all over again! Rock on!!! ✌
@@kimgrandi9937 awesome, yes full moon! Wow, I saw them when Keith Moon was still with them, that was incredible. I'm sure tomorrow will not disappoint. BTW I have an extra ticket if you want to come to Boston! :)
My kids used to make me max out the second scream on the album cut when they were growing up it never grows old I have but I consider myself so lucky living in the generation that encompassed the 50s 60s and 70s seeing these guys live in a bunch of others those are the days when we still had music
Epic. Whole song was amazing. Everything sround 7:40 was exceptional. The lighting and effects. The drumming. The feeling. Then the cream and jump. I do not usually care or react to those kinds of things but it was awesome.
@@aleksanderfinstad5785 It was the finale for the movie "The Kids are Alright" - shot May 25, 1978 - live at the Shepperton Movie Studios - Moon's last performance with the band. He did get to see the final cut of the movie before he passed away.
Well there are no words to describe my love of this live version. Epic historic and in the annals of a genre of rock long over looked. Cream of Rock and Roll for sure.
love the moment when Pete cuts his finger open, walks back towards Kieth, then on with the show. The next close-up of Pete, you can see blood on his finger. THAT IS ROCK N ROLL!
How on earth could anybody give this a thumb down? This is the best of the best in my humble opinion - and I'm a musician, for whatever that may be worth.
The most anthemic rock song by one of the greatest bands with the most theatrical guitarist, drummer and lead singer ever..! Meet the new boss , same as the old boss! That ending lyric summarizes this song like no other!
First concert I ever went to by myself was 'The Who' and I think it was this year. Hitched 400 miles and it snowed on the way back. Intense! Would do it again. 18 years old.
This film, is a fucking historical treasure
Moonie BEST DRUMMER EVER.
This is the one. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a rock star is!❤
Four musicians, zero bullshit. Just incredible talent, drive and conviction behind one amazing song.
Only in the Who where the bass player is the lead player and electric guitarist is the rhythm player. Pure genius.
Don't forget the fifth guy playing keyboards.

We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again, no, no
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
Yeaah!
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again, no no
Yeaaah!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
HA!
These were the words of a prophet and a genius
These guys were 10 years before my time but their time was the music I love the most. This is a masterpiece song. Acoustic or electric.
Wish I was in the audience, omg the sheer power & electrical performance, so fantastic!
Biggest regret is not seeing them live, whoever did was sure lucky!! 😊
Look anywhere you want, this is the track that defined the 70s, performed by the only explosive super group that defined that generation, full stop.
I was lucky enough to see them twice in 1976. The most vial rock band in rock history, most political, most relevant. Best is relative, but as many have said, the Who mattered, largely because of Pete's song writing.
You lucky bugger wish I had seen them once 😥
yes, yes, I agree
Pete Townsend was a wrecking ball.. dude did it all very well !!
Keith moon was a great durmer and sad he died at 32. Rest in peace Keith moon.
Guy Leibzirer yes there are very interesting parallels between the two bands and their drummers.
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
1980 was the biggest blow. We lost John Lennon from the Beatles, John Bonham from Zeppelin and Ian Curtis from Joy Division.
Same for me from Seattle
Everyone loves Entwistle. He was the stoic rock in so much chaos 😂
Possibly the best rock band of all time...all 4 of these guys were/are rock stars and musical geniuses in their own right.
And as pete says, terrible people hahahaaha
easy to see why....the only band in the world with four front men
Led Zeppelin. John Entwistle is best rock bass of all time.
@@glenkirkpatrick4357 Led Zeppelin is garbage. Sorry.
The Who. One of the best live groups ever. I mean, Live at Leeds is so incredible and beautiful... Better than 99% of studio albums ever recorded by any band.
Agreed.
Better than The Beatles "White Album"?
@@TMthe33rd ~ According to Filippo, yes. Why bring something else up?
To all the kids watching this in 2019: This is how you ROCK.
OOOhhhh YEEEAAAAAHHHHhhhhhh !!!!!
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!! Marie in France !!!!!!!!!
HELL YES!!!! 😎🖤
They need to be taught a lesson or 2.What is rock music?Or music period.
Amen!
Been watching this footage for years. Never, ever will I get bored of it. God bless 'em x
John Entwistles un genio tocando el bajo... The who cuatro musicos estrellas del rock...
What a brilliant song this is, and this performance was superb.
Glad I witnessed great rock concerts back then. When raw guitar complimented screaming vocals. Your body shivered in response to these bands who could deliver. And deliver they did.
There a million bassists out there.
Not one has ever reproduced Entwistle's tone or style...
He wanted to be known as a bass guitarist rather than a bassist, since he was really playing co-lead lines on that thing with the instrument's treble cranked up.
Yes, however regarding his tone, there was a little bit more to it than just cranking up the treble.
Who could ?
That was a truly epic live performance, it had everything, power, energy, great vocals and musicianship.
Been a WHO fan since the beginning of time....THIS IS GREATNESS!!!!! A billion thumbs up......
PsuedTydBoo2szzaa???...
MOONIE, BEST DRUMMER EVER.
The point where Keith Moon starts rolling on his drums with the blue lasers dancing around his head still gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME!
Just the best rock song ever by one of the best rock bands ever! Just look at those guys go! All supreme at their own art. Townsend, Daltrey, Moon and Entwhistle. Shivers up the spine for me. Thanks you guys for giving me years of happiness since I was a kid!!!!!
~ There's no h in Entwistle. I hate when people do that.
@@5jerry1 Mhe too!
Who gives a shit you t****r
Go and get a life w****r
For me the one and only real rock group. The greaters among the greats.
Saw this line up twice. Once at Empire Pool Wembley and 76 at Charlton Football Ground. Superb.
7:46.. the single greatest moment in rock history.... 'nuff said!
U. Soo
Keith's air drums in the beginning are epic! Also please note Keith has to have his head set duct taped to his head so it does not fly off during the concert!!
joseph melican could you explain why he’s wearing a headset? Not joking, I am curious. Thank you.
@@joycemckay7488 The keyboard parts are all on tape, so Keith is listening to a click track as he plays to stay in sync with the tape. He HATED having to do that, as it locked him in, whereas normally he'd just react to what the other guys were doing.
Than you very much.
After all these many years, that scream still gets me.
Best in rock history. I've always said that
I wish I could have experienced this live.
@@michaellorah9051 I was lucky to see it is 2015. It was perfect! What a voice what a great moment!
Greatest Ever.
This never gets old!!!! Greatest Band Ever!!! Going to see them tomorrow Friday 13, 2019 at Fenway Park!!! Rock on!!!
That scream man I'll tell ya . Still sends chills up your back dosnt it?
Every
Single
Time
I saw them in 2017 in Vegas and this was their encore song... He fucking KILLED it then too, even 40 years later! It was incredible!
My kids used to make me max out the second scream on the album cut when they were growing up it never grows old I have but I consider myself so lucky living in the generation that encompassed the 50s 60s and 70s seeing these guys live in a bunch of others those are the days when we still had music
Pete Townsend and The Who amongst other great achievements they are the greatest stage act ever. No one will ever come close to them.
Agreed but catch Emerson Lake and Palmer .
Totally the most exciting, hardest rocking band live! And iv'e seen a bunch. The who are simply the best.
Yes sir, I agree with you. We saw them twice back in the 70's, best band I've ever seen. I still get excited thinking about those concerts, lol....
Yes my friend. Bloody well right.
Not Led Zeppelin? or Rush?
@@preving yes def the zep and rush! Caught rush 3 times in the 80s.. Unfortunately no zep they was calling it quits my 8th grade year..
I saw Rush twice but not in the 80's. I was too young. Countdown from the Signals album is my favorite song from them
Simply splendid to have a bass player like John a drummer like Keith in the band ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolute masterpiece. Legend
Epic. Whole song was amazing. Everything sround 7:40 was exceptional. The lighting and effects. The drumming. The feeling. Then the cream and jump. I do not usually care or react to those kinds of things but it was awesome.
The last performance by the original line up... And a damn good way to go out. (And a well edited video) 👍 Long Live Rock!
Be it dead or alive!
'WELL EDITED VIDEO...' The Guy's Who Shot This Gr8 Piece.... We're @ Uni... & There Words Were... "It's An Experiment".....
When was this play out live?!
1977 or 1978?
Long live rock?! Isn't that anudder Who song?
@@aleksanderfinstad5785 It was the finale for the movie "The Kids are Alright" - shot May 25, 1978 - live at the Shepperton Movie Studios - Moon's last performance with the band.
He did get to see the final cut of the movie before he passed away.
Well there are no words to describe my love of this live version. Epic historic and in the annals of a genre of rock long over looked. Cream of Rock and Roll for sure.
One of the greatest rock band every time. They are in my best five.
love the moment when Pete cuts his finger open, walks back towards Kieth, then on with the show. The next close-up of Pete, you can see blood on his finger. THAT IS ROCK N ROLL!
Saw them at Veterans Stadium and Pete’s hand was bandaged from a whammy bar accident!😊
How on earth could anybody give this a thumb down? This is the best of the best in my humble opinion - and I'm a musician, for whatever that may be worth.
My first ever concert was 1981 Portland Oregon. The Who. Have not been the same since...
Man. Has there ever been a rock guitar player with the energy and moves of Pete Townsend?
yes, lil wayne.
That was a huge joke. hell no.
HA
Angus Young. Edward Van Halen in his prime.
No
@@johnbalducci3507 yeah alright Angus Young too
The Who had so much energy to give. The power slide proves that.
Four guy's WHO ROCK THE WORLD AND MINE 1970s 🎸👊
The most anthemic rock song by one of the greatest bands with the most theatrical guitarist, drummer and lead singer ever..! Meet the new boss , same as the old boss! That ending lyric summarizes this song like no other!
Pete’s Guitar tone is just spectacular here.
Like a bomb going off in the right place at the right time.
Outstanding!!! A+++++
That scream still sends shivers through me! So raw and powerful!
its my new alarm tone
Even J.E is impressed by this great live shot bit***!
The best song ever written by a genius and played by the best band ever , the Mozart's of my Generation The Who
I love the opening to this song, it sounds so spacey and futuristic even though this song is pushing 50 now. It still sounds great!
First concert I ever went to by myself was 'The Who' and I think it was this year. Hitched 400 miles and it snowed on the way back. Intense! Would do it again. 18 years old.
EPIC, and that primordial scream is enough to put shivers down a corpses spine.
This show was the best of the best of a band that will go down in american folklore as legends!!
"Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best scream ever in a song!!!!!!!!!!
