  • Action at Northenden Junction in South Manchester. Grab a brew (or beer) and watch 66951 negotiate the junction and ready its empty train for the collection of some of Greater Manchester's refuse.

They should reopen the line from skelton junction to Carrington. This train could take a few trucks off the road carrying waste from Broadheath to Northenden. Nice vid 👍

    Thanks for posting this.
Interesting to watch the movements into the transfer station sidings. Reminds me a bit of the shunt some trains have to do to access the cement works at Clitheroe.

I'd never bothered to have a look before, I was just intrigued to see the loco approaching so fast, I didn't realise it was have to cross the junction. It was well co-ordinated as the stopping passenger train was closing in on the junction while this manoeuvre was happening.

Thanks for this video it really takes me back, I used to train spot at Northenden Station in the early sixties. In those days you could easily have fifty to eighty trains a day, both lines at the junction were double tracked the left went to Tiviet dale station then through Brebury to the hope valley line, the left as it is now to Stockport edgeley. The binliner sidings were not there but the small cement siding was, the station was about halfway between the bridges on the same side as the signal box and there was also a station masters house. Mainly freight, limestone and coal trains avoiding Manchester, happy days thanks again. Steve T

I live about 3 miles away and have never visited this spot until this summer. There can be a busy period between 10 and 11am if the freight trains are running but I guess that's probably the busiest spell of the day now. I am compiling some videos for the mid Cheshire line from Stockport so look out for those soon, Northenden Junction will be included, plus Baguley, Timperley etc 🙂
