  • Abandoned Trafford Park Moorings Road Level Crossing, Trafford Park, Manchester.
    Location: Moorings Road, Trafford Park and Trafford Park Road, Trafford Park
    Date Filmed: 25-11-2020
    Located at a junction with Moorings Road and Trafford Park Road, next to the Tenax Road roundabout. This is one of a couple of a few remaining examples of infrastructure from the old Trafford Park Railway, which is a disused railway that sprawls across the Trafford Park industrial estate. The network dated back as far as the early 1900s, but since fell into decline in the 1960s and had been neglected by the 1980s. The last trains stopped in 1998 so the railways and crossings have been abandoned since then.
    At this junction, a single railway line crosses the main road (Moorings Road) and then runs through the middle of the junction with Trafford Park Road. As a result, it created a very unique crossing which, as it stood on this date, had a total of nine halogen warning lights, five alarms and one halogen pedestrian light. The most unique aspect of this crossing is that there is an overhead warning light on a concrete cantilever. This is probably the only location you can see such a warning light in this position in the UK. This overhead light faces south-east along Moorings Road. At the junction, there are two warning lights on taller poles and there is an example of a Forest City halogen pedestrian light. Most of the track and rails have been removed after resurfacing the road but its strange to see all the old equipment from the level crossing that was once here still standing.
    Thanks For Watching!

    Fantastic! It’s great to see that the equipment hasn’t been removed (at least when this was filmed)

      Thank you 😁 It was really interesting to look at and film, considering its such a massive and unique crossing.

    It's nice to see that the old lights stay in the same place even if the crossing isn't working anymore, in Spain they use to remove all traffic lights and signals when a level crossing is abandoned

      These lights have been in place for many years now, so they have been left abandoned for a while. I find these things really interesting so I’m glad it hasn’t all been removed yet.

    This is insanely cool tbh! Wigwags and alarms all over the place lol. Love the cantilevered wigwag, the forest city pedestrian light, and also the fact that two wigwags on the same mast each have their own alarms. Awesome showcase! 😁

    Absolutely outstanding! I'm surprised nobody has come forward and asked Network Rail, if they could purchase a pair of the wigwags and maybe a sign or two for restoration then to put into preservation. Would it not be worth a try?

      Thank you 😁 It can be quite difficult, especially in this case as clearly there is no urge or requirement for this equipment to be taken down, so it could remain standing for maybe years longer from now. In addition, I don't have any room for one of these lights lol

  • @greatgordonfan7094
    @greatgordonfan7094 3 года назад +2

    Awesome! I used to live very near to there! You should check out barton dock road. It was a branch line to the trafford park railway. It was actually in operation until about late 2012

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад

      Thanks 😁 Unfortunately I didn't have much time so I just filmed the three crossings around the northern area of the estate. There doesn't look to be much left on the railway beside Barton Dock Road which is a shame. The railways will slowly disappear before they are probably removed eventually.

    Great video Jamie, brings back a lot of memories. 👏
    In the middle to late 1970s as a young 16 year old I worked on the Trafford Park railways maintaining the track.
    Walked the tracks every day checking for faults, usually loose rails, even then there was only maybe two or three trains a day.
    A long time ago!

      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад +2

      Thanks 😁 Wow, that’s cool, quite a long time ago now indeed. That must’ve been quite hard-work, walking along the railways everyday. There was a lot of rails back when the railway was operational!

    I love all the equipment here; the Forest City pedestrian light is strange, it looks more like a Mellor and Forest City never made Mellors (at least, I'm not aware that they did)

  • @dragondancer1814

    That is absolutely bonkers-the crossing signals are still there, but the rails are gone. If I hadn’t read the explanation, I’d think I was going around the twist seeing that combination. Pity the trains are no more-it must have been interesting back in its heyday.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel

      It’s still interesting now seeing what remains of this unique crossing and what it would’ve been when installed many years ago. It is a little shame it’s no longer used but I’m glad it’s still here surviving and hasn’t been removed.

    Used to visit Trafford Park quite regularly in the early-mid 80s when I lived up north - as a crossing enthusiast, it was paradise! Last time I was there was around 2003, and whilst a lot of the network was still in place it was clear that its days were numbered.
    Moorings road was my favourite crossing, due to the layout - although further up the line was a large, unguarded crossing that cut through a roundabout. Sadly I never saw any rail traffic through it.
