You’re right on, Nate! I overseeded my main stage last year and I am NOT overseeding this year. I’ll do preEmergent this fall and the next year do a full Reno on it. However, I will overseed my Project Island this year. Good points about mechanically aerating too - something I think is done too often.
I wanna stress there's nothing wrong with mechanically aerating. It's a good practice but far too often I see people saying it HAS to be done and that's just not the case.

Totally agree on all of this. I’ve only mechanically aerated once and never again. After that year I had Triv everywhere the following Spring but never had an issue any previous year before aerating.
I'm right with you on the aerating - i have mechanically aerated once in 7 years and that was because the previous owner had done zero to the lawn and it was rock hard. I use AIR8 monthly and i have zero compaction issues or dry spots. Really don't see the value in pushing a 300lb machine across my lawn every year for nothing. We all know the debate thats going on about mechanical vs liquid but I do what works for me. Lawns looking great...
I started to go down the liquid vs mechanical rabbit hole but I edited it out. I completely agree. I've been using Air8 for 2 years now and have zero reason to mechanically aerate.

That last tip is absolutely the best tip. ANYONE can do it... I took on a hefty project. I planned it out and focused on one step at a time. could I have still done it better? yes, but I got it done, and the neighbors keep asking how I did it. One guy that walks his dogs by daily I remember telling me, Good luck, your gonna need it, that's a tough process... just yesterday stopped and said wow, I'm impressed how did you make that work. I said easy.. one step at a time.
My wife was telling me just last night she's sick of people asking how we fixed the front yard. She's printing out cards with the YT channel on it and is just gonna pass them out. 🤣

I would have to totally agree. If your lawn is healthy and your doing proper watering and mowing, theres really no need to over seed. It is all dependent on your particular lawn. Or maybe you want to introduce another variety of grass into your current lawn.
Great video Nate. One of the best you ever made. Right on with all the myths. I did my over seeding project last year with just scalping my lawn, using my greenskeeper II rake, seeded with my cheap Scotts spreader and then spread out Peat moss to keep the seed moist. I did use a leveling rake but only because I already had it and it came out fine. Well done sir on this one and both your lawns look amazing :)
I’ve always done my own lawn care and agree with you….it’s not rocket science. Even big projects can be dealt with if you have the time. Just saw your video and liked and subscribed.

Doing a full renovation for my daughter and after doing some research i became slightly overwhelmed but after seeing this clip that has put all that to bed thank you.

I am new to subscribing to your particular RUclips channel. I must say these five myths are a big help to me. And do not have a big yard. In fact I have a rather small postage stamp front and back yard. A total of about a thousand square feet. I felt like I really wanted to core aerate but I own a Prius. I don't think I can get a rental in my Prius. I definitely don't want to spend that much money to purchase one and besides my garage space is taken up by my spouse. Lol so these five various myths are of help. I do have a rake. I even have a compost spreader. And a handheld seed spreader called The wiz by Scott I think. So thank you for being there for people like us. I'm going to watch the rest of your various videos. I may make comments about old ones but that's usually the ones that pop up that are most interesting. So thank you again.

I have heard, and it makes perfect sense to me, that when you aerate before seeding the seeds that fall into the holes could possibly not have enough energy to overcome a 2 to 3 inch hole. Especially if it was meant to be seeded about 1/4 to 1/2 inch below.
I aerate my lawn twice a year with a tine aerator, not plug style, I pull with my riding mower. I fertilize in the spring only. Leaf matter fertilizes in the fall. I don't rake leaves. They get ground up in the soil. Each spring I do a scalp cut. I don't have a dethatcher. That gets most of the dead grass up. 🐀🐾
Another good one I’m actually fully redoing my back yard this fall killed off all the grass going to roto till and level out reseed then pray thanks for the tips
I would rethink tilling it. That usually causes more weeds to sprout up and you have to give the soil time to settle because it's gonna get bumpy. Tilling is OK for crops and gardens, turf grass.. not so much.
@@Wi11duhbea5t really depends on how bad it is. If it's not terrible, a compost and sand mix. If spots are more than an inch, a 3 way blend of topsoil , compost and sand.

That’s good info there. Ok I’m renovating In about 2 weeks and plan on doing mechanical aerating. My soil is really hard. I was planning on throwing down some bags gypsum to help with that. Should I throw the gypsum down before I aerate or after to help with the soil? Or do you have any other alternatives to help with the soil hardness?
Gypsum only helps with certain types of clay soils. It's more likely not going to help much at all. Aeration (mechanical and liquid) will help more. Getting the pH right also helps as well as a good carbon based program.
@@PacificNorthwestLawns ok my soil test came back and my PH was 7.06 which isn’t to bad right. So I will aerate and bring in some topsoil just level off and have 1to 2 inches of extra soil for the roots grab onto. That sound good?
Ideally the pH would be between 6.5 and 6.8 but that kinda depends on the turf type too. You can use elemental sulfur to bring it down but it takes time.

I really enjoyed the focus on compost as a top dressing. It adds live soil and nutrients to the lawn. Top soil is mostly dead matter. Your not helping the soil comp adding top soil. Also a lot of places are selling fill dirt as top soil. 😂👍
I'm using GCI CoolBlue and was planning on adding some Pierce County Tagro top soil. They advertise a ph7.9 would you recommend adding some three way to bring that number down a bit or do you have a better suggestion? My seed should arrive this weekend and I'm thinking about going forward and controlling any weeds that come up next season thoughts?
My lawn is bumpy as heck and I was considering leveling but don't want to do sand. Any thoughts? Maybe aerate and overseed now with a bit of Pete over it and try in spring? I'm in Michigan
Search around your local area for a landscape or garden supplier that sells in bulk. Most offer a 50% sand 50% compost mix which is great or they will also offer a 25% sand 25% compost and 50% topsoil. Either would be a great option for leveling. You can use the compost/sand combination in the spring assuming you're not filling in more than about inch deep. You don't want to bury your existing turf, it'll likely smother it.
“Screened top soil” I know what you mean. I actually ended up screening it myself with a colander from the dollar tree. I know… crazy. I of course only put soil down in low area and ruts. I use Air 8.

I sharpened the ends of my garden rake. Maybe bad idea? Thinking it would loosen soil to help seed germinate, but tears up good grass a bit. what do you recommend? Thanks
I wouldn't try altering your existing rake. Use a thatch rake or a grounds keeper rake. Pulling up some good grass is normal and usually nothing to worry about as you're seeding anyways.
You don't have to "Mechanically Aerate" but definitely highly recommend CORE aerating and making sure you pull up plugs. Plenty of Manual Core Aerators available.
@@PacificNorthwestLawns Mechanically aerating is core aeration with a machine. You can non-mechanically core aerator without a machine. You can core aerate creating plugs using manual standard tools such as the yard butler plug aerator or the AMICK RollAerator disc. None of these are machines, just simple cheap tools. While core aeration is not necessary by any means, it exponentially increases seed to soil contact for overseeding projects.
@@quorthunsargeras7054 weird because I've done several overseedings and renovations without core aeration at all and have never had an issue. While I agree it can help, I don't think it helps exponentially at all.
@@PacificNorthwestLawns Different experiences I guess. Without aeration, I find that seeds typically wash out fast if it rains or birds eat them when they're sitting on top of the soil. I have peace of mind when it rains even a day after overseeding when they're planting in holes. That way I know majority of my seeds won't get washed away.
@@quorthunsargeras7054 That's why I scarify with my Sunjoe, prior to overseeding. It creates perfect seed beds and seed to soil contact for germination.

KBG spreads so no you don'thave to overseed. Just feed it well and it will fill in any thin spots pretty quickly. Huge barefoot you may want to seed a little.

I've been using Air8 for a few years now and I'm absolutely satisfied it works and works well. I doubt I'll ever mechanically aerate.

I did in the spring but it was a compost/sand mix. As long as it's a thin layer it should be fine.

It depends on the concentration. The label of whatever you used will likely mention a wait time for seeding.

According to Penn State KBG does well in 6.5 to 7.2 so you're in that range. Let me know how it turns out. Pete has some awesome seed.

I think most places sell the left over junk from construction sites that isn't screened well at all.

@@quorthunsargeras7054 weird because I've done several overseedings and renovations without core aeration at all and have never had an issue. While I agree it can help, I don't think it helps exponentially at all.
@@PacificNorthwestLawns Different experiences I guess. Without aeration, I find that seeds typically wash out fast if it rains or birds eat them when they're sitting on top of the soil. I have peace of mind when it rains even a day after overseeding when they're planting in holes. That way I know majority of my seeds won't get washed away.
@@quorthunsargeras7054 That's why I scarify with my Sunjoe, prior to overseeding. It creates perfect seed beds and seed to soil contact for germination.
Does compost have weed seeds in it? I want to overseed 2.5 acres and use it as topdressing but am concerned about bringing more weeds into my yard

Sure did. It worked extremely well on the backyard last year so I used it again on the front yard.

I don't think so. That would smother the existing grass.

You can but you don't have to. It kinda depends too on your grass type.

KBG spreads so no you don'thave to overseed. Just feed it well and it will fill in any thin spots pretty quickly. Huge barefoot you may want to seed a little.

Beware using home made topsoil. I used composted maple leaves as a top dressing and it killed my grass.
