Yes, he wrote this song. This and over 170 other songs for various artists. Writing is actually how he started out in the industry. He actually didn’t start performing later.
This is the song that makes me think of my Dad. He passed 12/12/22. He loved all kinds of music and I ask my Dad through this song “what are you listening to?” Now that he’s gone. I wonder.
While late 😂 to your reaction my answer to the question of what is Chris Stapleton is. Chris is a Musician...it doesn't matter the genres. As a musician he has the ability to write and sing his authentic self into the music he loves bending it to who he is, not what label anyone trie to put on him. He has that ability to be a Camilion...taking on the color of his loves, his surroundings, his nature and reflecting it for us to hear and feel.
He's Outlaw country. But! He's doing what most can't do! He's mixing country blue's rock and soul together 👍 The way it was from 65 to 74. Carry on Children.
Definitely keep going. I'm a 59 year old black woman who is a Chris Stapleton fan. I've listened to all of his albums and I can tell you that there are some songs that fit the country mold but there are definitely songs that make you question the genre. I don't think it matters. It's all good. I would suggest you react to Cold and his 2015 CMAs performance with Justin Timberlake of Tennessee Whiskey and Drink You Away. Best live performance I've ever seen.
Chris markets under country per his choice but the living legend is his on genre. He writes most all the music on his albums, plus even more for other artists and most of his songs are under the country genre. His wife Morgaine sings back up on a lot of his songs and is also a songwriter and he says she produces most of his work. Them singing Amanda at The Grand Ole Opry together is beautiful Chris was part of and wrote songs for the bluegrass country band The Steeldrivers. Listen to Can You Run or Blue Side Of The Mountain or anything from the first album before Chris left the band. He was also in a rock band The Jompson Brothers - their Barely Alive is Chris showing those vocals off. I think his music is too varied for one label! His song Blow with Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars is still a fave or Joy with Carlos Santana!!
I play this one on car rides a lot, it sounds even better on the road moving. He has so many good songs, he was in Steeldrivers too, more of a blue grass feel but so much talent in every band he is in.
Yes, he's a country artist! But if you broke it down and base it on his looks. He has hair like rock & roll, dresses like country, plays like country blues, and sings like country soul! So, I guess he could be placed in whatever category someone wants to put him in.
when did long hair become rock & roll? guess willie sings rock & roll? jamey johnson rock & roll? blake shelton long mullet rock & roll? tracy lawrence, travis tritt, ricky skaggs (bluegrass artist), trace adkins, david allen cole, marty stuart, waylon jennings, etc... long list of country artist with long hair... hair has nothing to do with music style
He’s one of the most prolific country song writers of my lifetime. He’s also been in two bands before his solo career. The Jompson Brothers and Steel Drivers.
Love Chris Stapleton what a singer musican writer He will be the ledgend of our time ❤️ welcome to the Chris Stapleton fan club. Love your reaction videos keep up your great work ❤️
A little background about Chris, he started out as a song writer for other “well know artists” and was encouraged by one of the artists to start cutting his own songs. He also was with a bluegrass band The SteelDrivers and also a rock band called The Jompson Brother in the early 2000’s before going out on his own.
He’s great live and the studio version of this song, with his wife harmonizing is also beautiful. He’s the perfect mix of country, blues, southern rock, soul and even gospel. He’s his own genre. I found him about six years ago and still can’t get enough.
He wrote Country music first but his first singing gig was Rock with the Jompson Brothers. The point of Chris, he loves music and is good at all of them.
His a soul rytm and blues man dressed up as a country artist. He has done his homework well. His new song cold is absolutly amazing live. Souds like something coming from a bond movie.
I wish they'd do a live album with him, his wife, his acoustic and electric guitars with NO STUDIO ENHANCEMENTS! The crap the studio added to his music should be criminal. He's excellent just the way he is. You should watch his acoustic (with his wife), "I Hope You Dance", for St. Jude. WOW.
React to a live version of “Cold”, either from the CMA’s or the Grammy’s. You won’t be disappointed. Then again, Chris Stapleton NEVER disappoints. React to Millionaire, Parachute, Death Row, I Was Wrong, any of his live covers. It’s a Man’s World, Nothing Compared to You.
Great reactions and I'm looking forward to more. I thought the same thing when I saw the title and you're right that it's applied to the song wonderfully.
Chris started out doing bluegrass, he was the lead singer for a group called the "steel drivers" you should check them out with Chris singing.......great music!
Chris is a professional songwriter (for years) for both Country and Pop singers. Almost all his songs were written by him. Chris did not write 'Tennessee Whiskey' however. It is a older song written in 1981 and sang by well known classic country singers. Chris just came along and picked it up, dusted it off and added a little 'Chris' magic to it....
Gotta check out "This is a mans world" the famous James Brown tune, live. He was brought up on stage from the audience and absolutely KILLED it. Watch the band members reaction to his performance. Also Chris and Justin Timberlake at the 2015 CMA Awards. Knock your socks off for sure. Chris' wife Morgane is singing harmony too.
I haven't gotten a chance to read through your comments but welcome to greatness that man is not country he is a John ra all on his own and I recommend any more like reactions you do try to find all his life performance is Austin City Limits live you need to do him and Justin Timberlake at the CMA Awards him and Justin Timberlake live doing say something fire away Sometimes I Cry literally anything and everything that man touches him and his wife Morgan who is always his backup singer took a lullaby and made that s*** Rock I mean there's no words to describe how wonderful and amazingly talented this man is and I've seen him in person and I get to see him in person next month again and it literally the whole time it's just it's like you're in another place there's no words to describe it
Hey, know this was a while ago but I just wanted to say yes, he wrote this, he wrote this before he released traveller, his first album. This song was great but started to die eventually, and in that same month his dad passed away. And it was a bad month for him, his wife morgane bought him a vintage Jeep he was eying on, and on the way back to Nashville with his new Jeep, he wrote traveller, which blew up overnight.
He writes all of his stuff...before he ever began his performing career, he wrote many songs for other artists. He never expected to perform, but relented to the urging of his closest one.
Chris Stapleton writes most of his own music minus a few covers before he started recording his own music he used to write songs for other country artists until his wife said “why don’t you do it yourself” Morgane Stapleton is the one to thank for giving him the push
Do a little research he and his wife, who sings back with him and is featured in his videos, were in a group called steel drivers. Bluegrass… his real first commercial success was the song “Midnight train to Memphis”. That song has a ton of blues in it. He released it first as part of Steel Drivers. There is a video of that, the bluegrass version. Love his music. Like you said comes from the heart.
He plays the opre, he used to be in bluegrass bands, he has written many of the songs who would've heard on music row Nashville in the last decade, since he went solo, he is simply an artist, he embraces music in general, he puts his finger to the country music industry, and they lap him up as he takes their money, you really can't put him in a bracket, he is just Stapleton, and we love him for that
His song Cold is 1 of my favorites, Death Row is another good song that’s actually a freestyle song that was created when a band member (I don’t remember who) was playing the beat, the rest of the band joined in & Chris freestyled the song. It’s completely different & I think you’ll like it.
For several years he wrote songs for other artists, and he also wrote and recorded with a bluegrass group, The Steeldrivers. Check out their song “If You Can’t be good, Be Gone”.
Yes, he wrote this song. This and over 170 other songs for various artists. Writing is actually how he started out in the industry. He actually didn’t start performing later.
He's considered Country but actually He's a Chris Stapleton
YES he wrote it! Get ready.. You haven't even scratched the surface yet...MORE!!!!
This is the song that makes me think of my Dad. He passed 12/12/22. He loved all kinds of music and I ask my Dad through this song “what are you listening to?” Now that he’s gone. I wonder.
MORE CHRIS STAPLETON PLEASE. NEXT CHECK OUT "COLD"!!!!!!
The live version from the grammys. Also needs to check out parachute and the devil always made me think twice.
DITTO to Steve plus his live performance to Hold On with HER. But there isn't a bad Chris song so do them all
Cold is definitely a good one to listen to

He wrote everyone you have listened to except Tennessee Whiskey.
He's Outlaw country. But! He's doing what most can't do! He's mixing country blue's rock and soul together 👍 The way it was from 65 to 74. Carry on Children.

62 here and I agree...best live performance ever!
Just found your podcast. At 70, I experienced most of the music when it was new. I love your honesty and openness to new styles.
Beautiful song yes he wrote it keep reacting to chris.
His song, "Either Way" live is so beautiful! Heck, he can sang the phone book and it'll be amazing 😍💜
First song i ever heard by Chris Stapleton, a few years before Tennessee Whiskey.
Hooked❤️
I'm loving your reactions and comments to Chris Stapleton!

Everything by Chris is great
Without any doubt my favorite Chris Stapleton song! Brilliant lyrics!!!
He has a very emotional music video, Fire Away. He's only in it for a few seconds
Dude I love your channel and how genuine you are about your music
I play this one on car rides a lot, it sounds even better on the road moving.
He has so many good songs, he was in Steeldrivers too, more of a blue grass feel but so much talent in every band he is in.
He is one of a kind a truly gifted singer
Yes, he's a country artist! But if you broke it down and base it on his looks. He has hair like rock & roll, dresses like country, plays like country blues, and sings like country soul! So, I guess he could be placed in whatever category someone wants to put him in.
I would put him in the "Americana " category.
That's my favorite style of music
when did long hair become rock & roll? guess willie sings rock & roll? jamey johnson rock & roll? blake shelton long mullet rock & roll? tracy lawrence, travis tritt, ricky skaggs (bluegrass artist), trace adkins, david allen cole, marty stuart, waylon jennings, etc... long list of country artist with long hair... hair has nothing to do with music style
Hes just an artist no need to box him in.
Well said. Thank you!
When you're this good you don't need to be pigeon holed.
Love your reaction videos keep up your great work ❤️
YES and YES and YES. Chris is most genres and a little of his own. He's one of the artists that you just couldn't imagine never being here.
Yes, I discovered him by watching the Grammys. He is awesome!
A little background about Chris, he started out as a song writer for other “well know artists” and was encouraged by one of the artists to start cutting his own songs. He also was with a bluegrass band The SteelDrivers and also a rock band called The Jompson Brother in the early 2000’s before going out on his own.

Chris is a 🐐. I’ve seen him live three times and he doesn’t disappoint!!
My favorite song from him. It takes to back. No one alive who can’t relate to this song.
He’s a country artist but with a lot of blues, and that’s always a great sound
Chris songs hit on country, blues and you name it. He can do it all!
He’s great live and the studio version of this song, with his wife harmonizing is also beautiful. He’s the perfect mix of country, blues, southern rock, soul and even gospel. He’s his own genre. I found him about six years ago and still can’t get enough.

Cold at the Cma's 2021, the best yet
First visit. Always looking for the discovery of the greatness of Country Music!
Yes do more Chris Stapleton songs. You have only barely begun.
His a soul rytm and blues man dressed up as a country artist. He has done his homework well. His new song cold is absolutly amazing live. Souds like something coming from a bond movie.
I think the reason Chris is considered country is because his music is released and played in country menus. IE: country radio stations.
I was trying to think who I could match him with All I could think of is B.B.king. but nobody could match him 🙏🏾❤️ r.i.p. B.B. love you.
Jude. WOW.
He is country!
That’s Chris’s wife singing with him. She travels with him everywhere.
Everything Chris sings is 👌❤️
React to a live version of “Cold”, either from the CMA’s or the Grammy’s. You won’t be disappointed. Then again, Chris Stapleton NEVER disappoints.
React to Millionaire, Parachute, Death Row, I Was Wrong, any of his live covers. It’s a Man’s World, Nothing Compared to You.
Holding on with H.E.R. CMAs
Do Right Woman - Do Right Man tribute the day Aretha Franklin died
Great song!
just listen to the steeldrivers and you'll get your answer. Fan of Chris Stapleton and his guitar.
Great reactions and I'm looking forward to more. I thought the same thing when I saw the title and you're right that it's applied to the song wonderfully.

What Are You Listening To? was written by Chris Stapleton and Lee Thomas Miller
He is Grammy award winning songwriter...
Gotta check out "This is a mans world" the famous James Brown tune, live. He was brought up on stage from the audience and absolutely KILLED it. Watch the band members reaction to his performance. He was a song writer initially, sang lead with the Steeldrivers, a bluegrass band, prior to his solo career, if I'm not mistaken.
You need to do I was wrong and you are correct always the live version with Chris like your reaction so far cool
"I was wrong" it's pretty good too.
He started out bluegrass. Was a session musision for years.he can play Jazz country great blue’s country and rock.and anything he want’s
Country also draws from mountain music, bluegrass, and Memphis the delta blues.
Hey, know this was a while ago but I just wanted to say yes, he wrote this, he wrote this before he released traveller, his first album. Chris is his own genre ! 😂
Listen to "Cold"! Its amazing! Live at tha cma awards , i believe. ❤
He's definitely country/ blues
He writes all of his stuff...before he ever began his performing career, he wrote many songs for other artists. He never expected to perform, but relented to the urging of his closest one.
Brothers and sisters of America Canada 🇺🇸🇨🇦! Give this young man The very Best in Great music! Try Arkansas Live by Chris Stapleton 🤠🐴👍👍🏁🏁
Chris , writes all of his stuff, he was a writer before he song his own music. He has several Awards for his song writing
Polo reacts go back in his music. Chris is the first artist in country to sing true country music in a long time.
The genre of this is called Country Rhythm and Blues.
Chris Stapleton writes most of his own music minus a few covers before he started recording his own music he used to write songs for other country artists until his wife said “why don’t you do it yourself” Morgane Stapleton is the one to thank for giving him the push
He has been a song writer for the last 20 years. He has a lot of big hits through other artists.
Yes ...he wrote this one.
Chris does it all. He’s been in a rock band and in a really popular blue grass band called The Steele Drivers. Chris is his own genre of music.
I think he's better live than on record. How many singers can say that. He's just brilliant.
He plays the opre, he used to be in bluegrass bands, he has written many of the songs who would've heard on music row Nashville in the last decade, since he went solo, he is simply an artist, he embraces music in general, he puts his finger to the country music industry, and they lap him up as he takes their money, you really can't put him in a bracket, he is just Stapleton, and we love him for that
Chris has written many hit songs for other top artists. He decided to come out and do his music himself. Lucky for the world he did.
His song Cold is 1 of my favorites, Death Row is another good song that’s actually a freestyle song that was created when a band member (I don’t remember who) was playing the beat, the rest of the band joined in & Chris freestyled the song. It’s completely different & I think you’ll like it.
I didn’t know that’s how Death Row came about. Thx
For several years he wrote songs for other artists, and he also wrote and recorded with a bluegrass group, The Steeldrivers. Check out their song “If You Can’t be good, Be Gone”.
Are you kidding me, the freaking GOD this man is...YOu can speak to him???
Me too.❤️
Check out COLD at the CMA Awards Show or the Grammys!! Blows it outta the park!!!
Love your reactions ✨🔥✨🔥✨🔥✨🍃💚🍃🍃🦬🍃👵🏽👋🏾
He was a songwriter for other artists. He has written thousands of songs.
Chris Stapleton Cold live at the CMA Awards, it's a performance you don't want to miss.
Yes he co-wrote this song.
He was put in the country genre but does every genre you can imagine. Most of the songs he does are his own writing but does a few remakes
This is definitely country. But “his” genre is whatever he wants it to be: country, blues, rockabilly✌️
Cold
There is no auto tune in his stuff.
