I saw in an interview on 60 minutes, that this was his first single when he was unknown. It did not do great until the breakout performance with Justin Timberlake which had everyone checking out his music, and the rest is history.
Bear in mind, I think this one was about 7 or 8 years before his "breakout" to a wider audience with "Tennessee Whiskey" from the Traveller album (and the performance with Justin Timberlake at the CMAs) in 2015. During these years he would write numerous hit songs for country artists, play in a Bluegrass group, the SteelDrivers, have one of the songs he wrote and sang with that group covered by Adele on her 21 album, and play in a rock group, the Jompson Brothers. Think of the music we missed hearing from him in the time before he "went solo". Nashville's best kept secret from the wider world of music lovers.

I'm a lyrical listener and prefer this stripped down version of this song to the produced one. Whiskey and You will tear you up as well as Joy of My Life...my favorite artist of all time. I am a lyrics person; however, when I listen to Chris I can't focus on the lyrics the first time around because the vocals capture you too hard. This is my favorite song from him. Who doesn't relate to wondering if the person you broke up with is still trying to get over you or has passed that and moved on (or worse yet) found someone new already while your still stuck in the past listening to (our) song.
