Great video. Our studio made Munkiki’s Castles for Nokia back in those heady, J2ME days. And you tried Super Bloc Bloc, which was also a game from our studio (the designer and coder of Super Bloc Bloc now runs Bitmap Bureau). @@EmilyKimMartin That’s right! Super Bloc bloc was one of Mike’s first games and now he’s making ground breaking games for Mega Drive, Neo Geo and countless other platforms.
I randomly stumbled across this video and comment. I loved Munkiki's Castles as a child, so it was kind of refreshing to hear that people have searched for ways to play it for years.
I remember being like 9 or 10 and i downloaded Munkiki's Castle on my uncle's 3410, making him additional cost to the phone bill, which was expensive in Romania back then. I got punished pretty hard for it, if i remember correctly, but at least i was allowed to play the game when i was at my uncle's home 😂. Thank you for reminding me of it, i think i didn't see this game since 2004-2005
I've even patched FreeJ2ME emulator to properly run this game. I couldn't beat Munkiki's Castles back than on my 3410 because it "saved" me on level 0. Which doesn't exist and is generated from garbage. Most of the time you drown instantly.
because of these three videos with Nokia DCT 3 phones I ended up buying a couple of lots with good and bad Nokia 3310, 5110 and their modifications, service cables, JAF flasher, and everything. Now I have five 3310 in good condition, I modified one of them with white LEDs, one Korean 3315, one good 3330, three 3410, one with limited edition Space Impact cover, and second is silver in mint condition still with factory screen protector on (got this one for 10$), two 5110 in great condition with 6 batteries for them, and a whole box with covers, parts, motherboards, screens that you can put together and make another ten 3310 ones. I just can't stop now😂 Many sellers sell these devices very cheap in broken, not a working condition, but after cleaning some contacts on the motherboard and power button itself the motherboard works great again

This is my most favorite in depth old hardware tinkering channel so far. I am glad that I found your channel and it is hella underrated. Keep it up and wishing you luck!
Ohh. Munkiki's Castle was the name of that game. I played that game in the past when it suddenly appeared on my nokia back then. But that was when I can only play the game and not the other games.
I was sat here expecting a fun little Nokia video from a channel I just discovered, and then you throw a childhood memory at me, Munkiki's Castle. I played it once or twice on my Nan's phone as I'm pretty sure now she had the 3410 whilst my Granddad kept running with the Nokia 3310 or a later version of it. (He was a bit of a tech enthuesiast.)
I love the interfaces and aesthetics of these old nuggets of the 90s and 00s, especially the LG and Samsung ones from 2002 - 2010ish. I wish that someone would make MAME / RetroArch cores that would preserve these old phones. I would love to see something like the Samsung SCH-A630 and the LG VX4400 as a computer program, these old phones can't be any more challenging to emulate or be more powerful than a DS.
I had a 3310 with the flashing cable. I was able to upgrade to the 3315 flash. Then I modded with custom ringtones like 150 or so, all the ringtones were made by me using a midi editor. I also made some pictures that got publish in some magazines and were they sold them by sms. Later I bought 3510 which had polyphonic ringtones and Java on a monochromatic screen, the same as the 3350, after that one I got I 3510i which was basically the same phone but with 256 color display. I loved those phones.

I wanted to come back and say i would love to see this concept made into a series by you, phone after phone. Flashing all the classic fun nokias for example would be wild to see

It amazes me how familiar i am with all of those firmware revisions. I played on every phone like the 33xx series and mastered every game. Im terrible at snake though for the 3210
Wow. I never expected you to just be able to Frankenstein a whole new higher res display on an older phone model. Same chips, same graphics processors, just drop new display in and boom. Wow. How does the firmware recognize the display? I would've assumed that it would just look stretched or part of the graphics being cut off due to the higher resolution.
This is so cool I have the NOKIA 1100 and it comes with fucked up version of Space Impact + with some very hard annoying levels with hovercraft instead the space ship . I hope that I could change the firmware of it as well

@@JanusCycle Have you ever done any projects on Arduino? There are code libraries for Nokia 5110 screens (which I think it's specwise the same as the 3110?) which you can use to create cool low-spec devices/apps.
3210 has a special place in my heart. First phone I bought from wages of first job.
hearing munkiki's castle tone is so nostalgic 💚💚💚💚 👍👍
Impressive knowledge!! I was a kid of the same era but didn’t know you could mod the Nokia of the early era that much
I had a 3310 with the flashing cable.
I loved those phones.
nothink can change that feel loking on green light and that 1 color black lcd that old year was awesome
unbelieveable work
i don't even imagine this classic phone can run this game, even 3d game as well
very nice work sir🙏🙏🙏
you deserve to have million subs
now i want to buy nokia 3310 just to play space impact cuz this game bring me so nostalgic moment in the past, play this game when i was kid😅
13:52 Wow, I remember playing Munkiki's Castles on my father's 3410 a lot, circa 2004-2005, after getting bored of Snake. At the time I didn't realize that it so ahead of it's time, but later when I got my first java phone, the first thing I did was to find games on wap sites.
I am stunned by your technowizardry!
Munkiki! I played on my moms 3410 back when, I was sooo impressed
This dude’s voice is what I would like to here on a cozy rainy night by the fireplace while he just sits there tinkering stuff.
I love your channel.
I love re using old hardware.
Thank you. It's amazing what you find exploring old tech.
I played munkikis Castle as a kid! So awesome to hear the music again! Thanks for uploading!
I had Nokia 3410 15-20 years ago. What an amazing CPU! and sow much tinkering is possible - I never knew.
(LIKE, FAVORITE, BOOKMARK) Thanks.
I wanted to come back and say i would love to see this concept made into a series by you, phone after phone. Flashing all the classic fun nokias for example would be wild to see
Great suggestion. I would like to do some more detailed phone videos.
am glad that i got this channel suggestion in my recommendation love to see modification specially on vintage devices
I'm glad you are finding these videos interesting. Thank you.
Thanks for the upload, Janus!
awesome 🔥
So thats why the algorithms have send me here.
Dude I've been searching for that monkey game for years now. Thank you so much
This is the most incredible content I ever seen on internet.
What a wonderful video! I just recently found Nokia 3510i in the attic and I've already bought a data cable. Can't wait to start modding it. :) Thank you for the inspiration! :)
Be aware the 3510i has DCT4 chipset which doesn't support these mods. It can certainly run those old Java games though.
@@JanusCycle, thank you for pointing that out. Since you are the only expert in this topic I know, I'm asking whether you know of or can recommend any good repository/web page where I can find mods and Java games for my 3510i? Would greatly appreciate any feedback. 🙂
@ There are game packs on archive.org such as archive.org/details/Over5000MobileGames
Finding the good games can take time. I also search for top lists to find recommended game to try out first from the game packs.
@@JanusCyclewonderful! Thank you for jump-starting this new hobby/project of mine. Keep up the good work. 😊
One of the rare videos that amazes me
Level Master ! 😊 Incredible skills! Congratulations 😁
I recently bought a Nokia 3410 on a flea market, and it has the munkikis castle installed!
Nice!
3585i is my absolute favorite. Has the 96x65 screen, Snake II, and 4 way d-pad. What more could you want.
Nice model, great for Java games!
@@JanusCycle I've actually been meaning to figure out that little five pin connector on the inside of the battery compartment. I've wanted to do the same kind of experiments you've done as I've amassed about four or five 3585i motherboards. Is there a good resource in starting out in this?
@@parkerlreed The pinout is similar to the 3310, but you might have to build a custom connector to go under the battery. With a serial or USB cable you should be able to upload games and graphics.
I vividly remember playing Munkikis Castle for hours. Many hours of wasted borderline fun/frustration..
I remember that I had that "Munkiki's Castle" game and I accidentally deleted it. Then I spent quite a lot of time trying to find it. It was even not on every Nokia 3410. Finally, almost 20 years later I learned what is the correct spelling of its name and where to find it 😀 .
woooow. In my youth, I had seen some enhanced and hacked Nokias, but I had no idea what was possible!
i like the indepth videos you make and i have seen these phones back in 1999 rarely i have a family member who had a nokia 3310 or some nokia model similar like that in 1999 and my mom had a nokia candy bar phone in 2003 or 2004
The man itself becomes a legend! Just like the phones.
Sheeeeesh, I remember playing a 3d cube game on an old Nokia when I was like 5 y.o. I couldn't remember what it was....
Thanks Janus, I'll be enjoying it this fine evening, you get a sub and a like from me!
Really enjoyed being able to bring this game back to original hardware again. Glad you enjoyed this, thanks.
What a brilliant vid! The games you found are so cool
Thank you!
Loved the 33 series and later getting the 5510 what a nostalgic time looking back. Exciting times different phones and styles not all the same looking as of today.
Ive been looking for a channel like this for a long time, LOVED the video. I used to love soft modding and playing around with apps and games on my s60 devices
Glad you enjoyed. I'm also curious about s60 modding.
@@JanusCycle I had so much fun with those devices. s60 through s60v3 was just amazing to me at the time. emulators for retro game systems, its own gaming platform that can be patched onto any of the unofficial devices, expandable memory, plenty of models with more advanced stuff like tv out and controller support. they could emulate the gba which was still on sale at the time and play it on a tv. just so much fun tinkering.
On my 3510i which had a colour screen, I used to play a ten pin bowling game, downloaded from the Nokia game servers. Also this mine cart game on my 3315 before I had the 3510i, where you guide this cart though different mine tracks trying not to full off. RAIL RIDER thats it thanks dude, finally after all these years I can remember the name again. Just subbed by the way, you tube recommended you based on my love of retro tech. PS your voice is really soothing.
It amazes me how familiar i am with all of those firmware revisions.
I played on every phone like the 33xx series and mastered every game.
Im terrible at snake though for the 3210
Wow. Mind blowing afford. instant subscription!
Wow very nostalgic a lot of people had these phones i remember some of the games you showed i had forgotten about them.
I'm so glad I've been able to bring some back. It's been real fun playing them.
This is so cool I have the NOKIA 1100 and it comes with fucked up version of Space Impact + with some very hard annoying levels with hovercraft instead the space ship . I hope that I could change the firmware of it as well
Nokia 1100 is DCT4 and can't be modified in the same way. You need a DCT3 Nokia model for firmware modding. Or a Java compatible DC4 model for loading Java games.
@@JanusCycle it have a similar exposed contacts 6 not 4, is there any schematics for the parallel or USB cable and can I flash some of those great shmups games you showed :) ?
Lovely stuff, I worked on games for later S40 phones, I always assumed there must be away to customise these earlier S30 phones, but never thought to go looking.
Bring so many memories. N3410 was my forst phone and I bought it becouse if JAVA and wap addition over N3310
wow this is additional knowledge to me ..... more of this content
This is great channel. If you were show me this firmware/mainboard trading system in 2002 year, I will probably die from the emotion excess 😂
OMG these Nokias are like a desktop PC! Super easy to disassemble and you can swap any parts you want :)
I had these games as a toddler. Good times.
this great channel hope u relesase more video often
thank you, I will do my best.
Great job! Thank you for sharing!

wowww, Temple Run
(also, nice to know "verticle scroll" & "horizontal scroll" game terms)
This was a really fun video. I think I have vague memories of playing munkikincatsle game.
when i started working with and repairing phones back in the day. i was confused to see the button layouts on the pcb itself. like you have 1 button to navigate but underneath it has a completly different layout. thats was really fascinating ane very convenient
edit: i keep watching i see 7:58, awsome that you mentioned.👍 your content is amazing
I would have lost my mind if I had that screen and games when I was younger :D
I love this SO much, thanks for the great video ❤️
3410 used a hi res display as well as up/down and two menu buttons, and a similar motherboard
