When Daniel hit the set of 6's and he bet the turn, she was about to fold and he saw that so he quickly went to his "go to" move which is to take a drink. He knows that most people when they're nervous of getting called unconsciously do something like look away at the TV, or take a drink or anything distracting to pretend like they're not interested because they're scared of looking weak. And the second he did that she called him which is exactly what he wanted. He gave away the reverse tell to make her think he's weak to sucker her in to donate now chips into that pot. It's little things like that which most people might not catch but it's very coo to watch his body language during the hands to pick up tells. Just like around the 7:35 Mark where he hits the Q on the flop and immediately jokes with the guy behind Russo saying "hey you can't look, that's not fair" basically putting out the false tell that he's weak and has nothing to try to induce her to either call, bet, raise, anything, to get more money from her.
A couple explanations since a lot of people don't understand the ace high hand or the last hand either. You really only need one explanation actually. The less people in a game, the lower the odds are that either people actually have a hand. This is why in heads up play, you often see the pros get to the flop with "bad" hands. On the ace high hand, once there was two pair on the board, that made the odds much lower that she had a J or 4 in her hand. The turn made it more likely that she's bluffing. If he's right on a call the match is over and he's actually beating most possible hands. On the last hand, once again, it's extremely unlikely that she had a full house and he had top pair. He's probably locked in on the 3 and thinks he has her beat if she doesn't have a 3. It's almost impossible to read a low pocket pair, especially 2's. Anyone who thinks these calls are absolutely outrageous probably get bluffed a lot online.
He doesn’t get destroyed. In poker everything can change in a hand or two. When playing heads up, that is even more true and as the blinds go up you are forced to make plays or calls you may not make in a traditional tournament. I remember playing in a 300 person tournament and I placed top 30 and I only won 3 hands the whole tournament because you can sit back and fold, minimize loss, and maximize profit on your winning hands. It’s harder to do that heads up and when the blinds get bigger and you have to make calls because even just folding the blinds over hurts your stack, you have to take the risk to win.
Ok so if I didn’t follow poker and watched Daniel for the first time I would have thought he just started playing poker within the last week of this heads up challenge. That last call was absolutely horrible for his tourney life. !!!!!!
