  • Five principal ballerinas of the Czech National Theatre open up to London and Prague-based director Tereza Bila's Life On Point, an unflinching portrait of bodies pushed to the limit. Bila reveals the discipline and emotion involved not only when dancers step onto the stage, but in the hours and years that precede the moment of performance.

Hands dry out from hand sanitizer, then I collect micro-cuts and broken cuticles, which will SEAR in pain if they come into contact with hand sanitizer the next day. my mum had a friend whose daughter was already skinny as it was
but she barely ate a thing when she started ballet
    you weigh almost nothing
and the reason you can see men lift the girls in the air so easily is not only because the men are strong
but the girls are apparently taught how to manage their muscle so that they make themselves as light as possible
it's a very difficult sport. and sometimes i think the end result isn't actually worth all the mental, physical and emotional strain you put yourself through each day. but as long as you're happy with what you do, _that's_ what really matters.

I was a dancer for 12 years before I had to stop because it became too much to balance with school. Anyone who says dance isn't a sport is an idiot. I had pointe shoes and I'm not even kidding it hurts so bad. Your toes get pinched together like no tomorrow and just staying balanced and upright is a feat in itself. Actual dancing is extremely hard, and I knew girls that would come out of rehearsals with bloody feet. Dancers deserve the utmost respect for their dedication to their craft!! This was such a beautiful video, makes me miss when I was a dancer.

Dancers, especially ballet dancers, are true athletes...
Imagine doing a pirouette on tiptoes.
    Tiptoes.
First of all, toes are incapable, or should not be used to sustain all weight. There’s the pain factor. They have to push behind the pain to find the beauty. To feel the beauty on tiptoes. It’s a short-lived beauty that results in pain.
    Endurance marks a true ballerina/ballerino.
I had a friend who was a ballet dancer, He was a perfect. His body was symmetrical. Strong. Powerful.
Could leap buildings in a single bound, LOL.

And stayed that way for up to a half hour. I’d never seen a pain threshold like that before.

This is a brilliant video. I did ballet seriously for a long time. Nobody talks about the real pain though and that’s the poor mental health that ballet brings out in many dancers. In many ways, its an addiction as no sane person would tirelessly torture their bodies and mental health for the sake of an outdated art form only like 3% of the human population actually enjoys watching. The abuse of power from many teachers stuck in old school nazi ways, using manipulative and volatile tactics, instils fear and causes anxiety, panic attacks and an unhealthy perfectionistic desire where dancers forget to listen to their bodies and know when to stop. It’s exactly like a trauma bond between ballet and the dancer, just like an empath keeps going back to a toxic narcissistic relationship. Then there’s the obsessing over food, feeling guilty for having a piece of cake or a bowl of ice cream even if you’re already slim, teachers will mock you the moment you gain weight or too much muscle. There’s the toxic masculinity amongst some heterosexual males involved in the industry because it’s such a rarity (I’m sure most people are aware of the Chase Finlay NYCB Lawsuit) Once you come to the realisation that ballet is an addictive trap due to its thrill but it cost
your physical, emotional and mental health, you make it out the other side a much happier person. That’s my take anyway, there’s not many ballet dancers I know with good mental health.

    • @JBaxter-pi8oj
      @JBaxter-pi8oj 8 месяцев назад

Yes, the culture can certainly be toxic but if the dancer has a very strong support system it's one that can be endured. The situation with NYCB was shocking. Male dancers are aware of how difficult ballet is on female dancers. The men who behaved that way violates in every possible way the trust that dancers must share in order to have a successful and transformative performance. And that artistic director always had a reputation for abusing female dancers. There is a way to instill discipline without abuse. Society does not respect dancers and to have that in training and professionally is shocking. How much better it is to have a foundation of respect when working with these stunning artists. Every single person then brings their best, without feeling ashamed of themselves.

I don't even realize sometimes how my pointe shoes feel when I take them apart. They're so beautiful and angelic- *AND THEN I RIP THEM APART AND LIGHT THE RIBBON ON FIRE, AND CONTINUE THE TORTURE BY DANCING IN THEM FOR 4 HOURS*

this video got me good, like i know how it feels (or maybe not as much as them). i'm not a ballerina but i used to join an organization that includes dancing and performing. i still remember the euphoria i felt when i learned the moves, even though it's hard i always love it. we practiced always in the field, no matter how hot it is or even rain. it will makes us sick, have a fever, fainted, but we will be okay as long our friends will always be around us. that's another thing i love when i joined the organization; friendship. i will never forget the nerveousness and how fast my heart beated when we about to perform; there's so many "what ifs" exploding inside our mind, but the cheers -the scream, the "woah" voices, it's what keep us believing to finish the performance no matter how bad it is, even though after that we always cried because of our mistakes or how bad our performance is. i already left the organization, but not gonna lie, i fucking miss it.

Truly beautiful, as a 14 year old male ballet dancer I only dabble in pointe work but I cannot even begin to fathom the work that my female peers put in during our performances. The amount of effort that is put in to make somthing stunning is tremendous. And I quote from Gaynor, "It's amazing what goes into making something effortless."

I may not be a ballet dancer but I am a dancer. The things these wonderful women said in the video is true.
I am a hula/Tahitian dancer and it is true to not, always about being graceful and beautiful.
The pain that we as dancers have to take in is absolutely out of this world.
I also love how she says that pain is her friend cause it is true for a dancer pain truly is her/his friend.
Every morning I would wake up and feel pain and it was every morning routine.
My thighs burned with agony but not as much as my feet.
Not only that by she also mentions that when the audience, claps it's like an addiction that we can not get rid of.
Just knowing he audience appreciates our dance is wonderful.
And when it's over, everything disappears so fast.
I still remember that my whole entire dance group performed at sea world for the whole day and only had a 1 hour to rest and get ready.
They wouldn't even offer us free food for performing there and our own dress room.
But I still remember our 7 number was the hardest one.
Our dance was for 6 minutes straight and that may not belong to other dancers but we were freak in basically shaking our butts and going really fast the entire dance
And it would be so scary if we messed up cause then the next day we would get yelled at and be dancing solo for the class the entire time

Wow, just wow. I so very much admire the ballet dancers. Their discipline is extraordinary. Their bodies are literally a work of art that is sculpted and molded to fit whatever dance and routines are given to them to perform. And their performances are a moving work of art. Absolutely astonishing. They demand so very much of their bodies, I am sure always perfecting their craft with constant pain but always pushing themselves to perfection. It takes very, very special people to be able to undertake this challenge everyday of their lives. Bravo to the very beauty, love and emotion they bring out of the audience. They truly bring me to tears just watching them. 🕊🌹💙🌺👌🏻💫

Inspiring... as a designer it did bring tears to my eyes to see other creatives talking about the complete investment they put into their work. All creatives who are truly passionate and gifted in their chosen form of expression experience some level of pain and hardship in their work. It is part of the life of a creative. This film so succinctly expresses that phenomenon. thank you.

Yea, but then, you wouldn't have given up on your dream if your parents tried to stop, would you?
Of course, surely let them know that *ballet isn't all sunshiny* as some people think/say it is.
Tell them *how the hardest part is not just that it hurts, it's how you'd again get hurt even before you've recovered from previous wounds.*
But IF your children happened to be *one of the rare percent of people who are extremely devoted to their dreams and can't ever switch to a different dream/vision,* then trying to stop them might only make things more difficult for them.
Cuz now they have to *not only go through physical pain* to achieve their ballet dreams, but *also emotional pain* thinking about how their parent doesn't approve of their dream.
Btw, I'm not a ballerina or anything. I just have a mom who never support me with my goals/dreams. Cuz she finds them to be too painful to achieve or too unrealistic to achieve. She always wants me to be an engineer/doctor/lawyer as it has a more "promising" and "lesser painful" future. That's why I felt like sharing all that with you.
