Gorillaz- The Fall ALBUM REVIEW

  • Listen: thefall.gorilla...
On this followup to Plastic Beach, Gorillaz bring together some pretty rough ideas and simple demos. Given, the sounds here are much better than what most people can create on a MacBook--never mind an iPad.
However, is it up to the level of quality and pizazz most Gorillaz albums are? I wouldn't say so.
It's hard for me to see this album as being more than just for the fans. If you've followed the band to this point, there's no reason you shouldn't explore this corner of Damon Albarn's musical mind, too.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Do you like it more than Plastic Beach? Less? Why?
    5/10

Amarillo is one of the only songs in this world that can get me to cry. I have no idea why, but the FIRST time I heard it, I just bawled. I first heard it in a bit of a difficult time in my life, so maybe that's why. It's just so beautiful sounding and it always puts me at ease.

    • @fleabagrusty
      @fleabagrusty 8 лет назад +19

I agree. It's just one of those songs that kind of hits you. That part in the beginning is just so calm and quiet with a little spunk, and then it just suddenly goes into this cinematic mixture of feelings and sounds. I love it.

@dgmcl3284 To me, harsh would be a 2 or a 1. I basically gave the 5 to symbolize that I'm really on the fence with the record. It would go higher if it grew on me, but I can't see it doing that since I don't have many reasons to return to the album like I did with Plastic Beach.

  • @1293jessica

I loved the Joplin spider, and I can't really tell you why, one thing I could tell you for sure is the limited vocals caught my attention, and the other song that really caught my attention was little pink plastic bags. Though you're right it is kinda filler, but I like at least one part from every song and am a huge fan of the gorillaz so to have more enjoyable content leaves me happy enough

5/10 is a bit harsh, although you are a really clever guy and you spoke well on this record.
I'd give it a strong 7 for innovation and the vibe that seemed to consistently run through the album. A relaxing record and one to be proud of, great addition to the Gorillaz discography, that is for sure.

I feel like this album has the most mixed reception I've seen from a Gorillaz album. I personally like this album, with songs like Hillbilly Man, Little Pink Plastic Bags, Shy-town, Amarillo, and Revolving Doors being my personal favourites. However, you are right about the sheer amount of filler in this album (cough cough *seattle yodel*) and I have a hard time calling this Gorillaz's fourth official album. I see it more of a G-sides or D-sides kind of thing. It does seem raw and unfinished, which is something I like. It's almost as though The Fall is like 4chan in a way: the things some people hate about it are also things others love about it.

I would have to disagreed, because one, The fall album might not have the hottest beat or the baddest lyrics, But it one of the album out of all their other ones that are give the calmer side. The Lyrics are good as always, and also this was made though a recording. here is damon word for it.
"I literally made it on the road. I didn't write it before, I didn't prepare it. I just did it day by day as a kind of diary of my experience in America."
Even if this album is recorded and not edited it still good to me, what really important is how much emotion he had put on this album.

I like to compare this album and plastic beach to Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time, respectively.
Two really great albums/games by the same guys that share completely different subject matter. Plastic Beach was an inviting, poppy side of Gorillaz with a good helping of supporting artists and highly polished, while The Fall was just all of the abstraction from both Demon Days and Gorillaz that was missing from Plastic Beach. Two sides of a pretty shiny coin, and a good ending to Gorillaz.

Although i most certainly agree with your feelings about "finding the diamonds in the rough" with this album, I have to admit i'm really enjoying it. If for nothing else, I love that Damon Albarn, with releases like this one and Democrazy, has always been willing to let us get an inside look at how his music comes together. I'd love nothing more than to see more bands give us this much insight into their process and output.

I think you hit it on the head with this review. I'm as big a Gorillaz fanatic as they come and PB is actually my #1 of 2010, but this one seemed a bit unpolished. On the spectrum of their entire catalog, its fine to have this stripped down music and all I'm hoping for now is that this album strokes Damon Albarn's ego enough not to break up Gorillaz again like he usually hints at in the media or go on hiatus till next decade until the proper follow up to PB. So mid 5 score is sufficient.

I would agree with you an a 5/10 for the songs itself.
But the lack of post-production is merely because it was recorded on an iPad.
It is a very innovative record, very relaxing, but after listening to it, I didn't feel anything. It didn't really excite me, I wasn't jumping up and down screaming "THAT WAS THE BEST!" It doesn't really impact you, it kind of breezes over you, and it makes you think "Was that an album I just listened to?". My favorite song was Amarillo, it's so great.

i think it is great as a musical tour diary which if anything beefs up their back catalogue a bit. i agree with the fact that it has definate highs and lows. This album has given me mixed feelings, but mostly positive. I loved certain songs like "Revolving Doors" and "Hillbilly Man", but I didn't enjoy "The Joplin Spider" or "Little Pink Plastic Bags". Even though I haven't enjoyed some songs, it is still an album I hold dear to my heart. In my opinion, this album wasn't made to appeal to everyone. I think it's supposed to have a little bit of everything. As an Alternative-style music lover, I certainly did enjoy this album overall. It has elements of music that I absolutely love. What's left to say about "The Fall" is it is sadly one of the most under-appreciated albums of the 2010's. I love Gorillaz, and all of their albums. I think that "The Fall" is definitely an album worth a listen to any Gorillaz fan.

I am a HUGE Gorillaz fan. I do agree that this album is very unfinished sounding; there's a lot of potential but it does leave me wanting more. On the flip side I still sort of love this album because, like you said, it is a picture of part of Mr. Albarn's mind. I like that raw aspect of it and I think it's great of him to allow hardcore Gorillaz fans to witness these songs in their infant stages.
Overall I'd say your review was spot on though.
P.s. No love for Revolving Doors? :O

Don't totally agree with you on this. There are actually more subtleties to this album that I originally thought... listened to it on some nice nice headphones yesterday and really caught some nice little details. As far as the "raw" or "underproduced" feeling you're not digging so much... I personally found it quite interesting to see Gorillaz stripped down to the very core... Damon and his synths. Also surprised you didn't mention Amarillo... phenomenal track.

I really don't care whether or not an iPad was involved or whether or not it was recorded on the go. I want to hear music that moves me. Amarillo was a great track with good sound and poignant lyrics, but Phoner to Arizona was just a repetitive techno beat that might make good background music for a video game select character screen.

Thanks for the review. I wasn't even aware that this album existed, but I will definitely give it a listen. Plastic Beach was pretty damn amazing, but I'm not getting my hopes up for this one.

i agree with you anthony, it's a so, so, album, but hey it's for free and it's always nice to hear from Damon and his cool friends. By the way let Cal do that "get rid of the snow thing", stick to the reviewing, we need your opinion. 20K, good goal for 2011!

THIS IS A TOUR DIARY.... It's a musical tour diary... not an "album"... I think everyone obviously completely missed the point. The "selling point" is not that it was recorded on an iPad... because... it was given away for free... not sold.
Bobby Womack's track is amazing... and being from Detroit (their show here was AMAZING)... I absolutely love the Detroit track. It encompasses the real sound of Detroit. I hate to say it, but I think this is a recording for "serious listeners only."

Actually, this album sounds great as a one piece. Songs are very connected to each other, you feel like experiencing the journey. The album is very emotional, very personal and very different from the other Damon's works. Probably my favourite album. Is it a real art to write an expressive poem in 300 words or do the same thing in 3?

Honestly, I feel the only weak track on this album was Phoner to Arizona. I thought I was in for a horrendous album when I heard that. Then Revolving Doors changed my thoughts and the rest of the album was magnificent. All the tracks flowed nicely into each other. The weak point of this album is the length of the songs. There all short but still very nice. I believe the Fall can almost be a concept album, a sequel to plastic beach in being that plastic beach was showing us how we are destroying

this is actually probably one of my favorite albums from the gorillaz right next to plastic beach. revolving doors and amarillo are my favorites from this album. I also noticed there was no rapping in the album so thats another thing i enjoyed cause i dont like rap that much. :)

I really enjoyed The Fall. Of course, I wasn't expecting anything amazingly put together, considering they just released an album this year. But for an album put together on the road on an iPad, it's pretty damn good. For me, all the songs were really nice to just sit back and chill to. I'd give it a solid 7, light 8.

Really nice opening of the album with Phoner from Arizona - really really good vibe in that track, i like it, one of my favs just like the speak it mountain, the snake in Dallas and the joplin spider,, detroid has an special feeling, relaxing charming track with a really nice spice of vocals.. i would give it ... hmm, maybe an 7/10 as an album.. pretty good though :)

i am a Gorillaz fan, and i love a lot of their music. And there are quite a few tracks on this that i like, and i love Revolving Doors. but thats it. every "real" album from the Gorillaz has several songs i love, the debut has Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, 5/4 and Punk. With Demon Days i loved too many to state, and with Plastic Beach i had several loved tracks, but the Fall has only one that i love, and the rest are likes or dislikes.
i hope they return to the album and "fix" it. 6/10

I liked the fall, and how you can tell each song was inspired by wherever they were in North America they were at the time. It's not their best album ever but to me it seems like a good little side project. Can't wait for the next fully produced studio album :]

I have to say that I felt the same way, but I was not that big of a fan of Shytown. My favorite tracks were probably "Amarillo" and "Revolving Doors." Though I believe if he kept them a little while longer, he could've turned them into something great.

The album seemed like a sketchbook, or a journal. I liked it for that, it did not feel like a fully realized album at all, and I don't think it needed to be.
