Thank you so much for making this video! And your other videos. Some things I like/learned: -I love how you break down your intros step by step. It's a huge learning moment so thank you! -The biggest thing I learned from last year's video was the simplicity of using your body as a stabilizer and not needing a fancy gimbal to make good transitions. -Another thing: Learning how color correcting and direction of camera whipping are huge in making successful transitions. How having a central subject (whether it's color or object) can give viewers a steady point of focus during the crazy whip-whip. -I also love how you challenge us to be creative in our transitions and in our editing. There's a very apparent level of respect that you have for your viewers as artists/film makers and it shows when you challenge us like that, so thank you. (Which is why you're a good teacher!) -I would have never guessed you filmed the transition of you sitting in your chair by yourself. That was a great surprise and example of how, i don't remember what you called it, masking?, can be effective and seamless. Thank you! You're a wonderful and thorough teacher. I don't know if this is something you're versed in teaching but I'd love to learn more about text editing in your videos? Happy New Year! :)
I have been using whip transitions for a while now, but this video shows me how much more I can do with them. Oh you bet ya I’m going to be upping my game using these tricks. Thanks for making this vid Jesse!
The way you explain and show things is so easy to assimilate, not quite often do you see advanced in depth tutorials that actually are so informative and clear.
I love Jesse’s videos, the part at the end where he explained how he did the whip by himself was awesome since I’m usually by myself. My only thing is a lot of his videos feel like they are for folks with some experience more so than beginners. I have to watch a few times and research some things to understand since I’m like a baby bird in this field.
Just used some tips from the previous in-camera transition video yesterday while snowboarding, but I'll definitely be watching this over and over while I piece it all together. Thanks man, you're the bomb!
Maaan, you're crazy with it. Always fun to watch. Cutting together three clips using two lenses and different resolutions for one continuous shot? WOW. I The only thing I can input on is the last shot, if you have a Ronin-S or something like that, you could set up a tracking shot so you don't have to do all of the masking
I use Blurs to help sell transitions. Either in camera focus pull blurs or Gaussian/Directional blurs in post. Like that Drone shot I would have Key framed some Gaussian blur onto (just a little) to help sell it. Or I will intentionally whack focus in camera then cross fade to the next shot out of focus to start. Great video. Made me feel great that I just started implimenting a lot of these tips on my own over the years. Glad to see I'm thinking the same a someone who does it so well.
Thanks, man! This is super helpful. Often I see videos of people outside doing the in-camera transitions, but they never take it to the editing software and actually do a play-by-play of what those shots look like in the editing software. It's not all in-camera, really, the post production of the movements you do in-camera is the key element, so I'm really glad you highlighted that post production part of it!
A+ for the Labyrinth coffee mug!! Another great video from you too Jesse! Looking forward to trying some of these things our myself in the near future!
So good. Learned a ton. I love your approach to all of this. Thanks for making another vid after the last hit a mil! AWESOME! I can't wait to see what the next version is going to look like and what new skills you pick up along the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my buddies told me about this channel literally the day after I had a shoot with a planned in-camera transition. When I planned my shoot I was just considering motion. Something I didn't consider or watch for matching color. When I did my whip, I passed a very bright spot. When I meshed the 2 shots, it resulted in a distracting flicker during the transition. To solve it, I ended up pulling a still frame masking/blurring to cover the hot spot. Then I manually keyframed it to match the motion. The motion blur covered everything and no more flicker. Anyway kickass channel and nice work. Keep it up.
Damn, that overlaying the clip without warp stabiliser, so simple and I have no idea how I never thought about that before, scrapped so many shots because of that
Thank you man!! Great video!! What i like a lot of your lessons is not only the tecnical part which is fantastic but also the theorical!! What is in the viewers mind amazing!!!
Wow ! This was full of useful informations I'm eager to put into practice. Most of them based on knowledge I already had on software techniques (keyframe, masking and stuff), but I had no clues I could use em this way... Thank you for this awesome christmas gift.
I'm sure many others have said this already, but Mr. Driftwood... my man... You are one of the most talented RUclipsrs out there. From day 1 I knew that....
can you make a video on how you masked that box to ur bag and and at the last when you transitioned urself in by masking. would be great help. thank you.
man! love you bro! It”s my first time in...2,3...4,5,6 years when I watch a long video 19:20 min from the start til the end. I love your funny style. I get courage doing this, filming myself watching you. well done bro! And I really wish to work for you
Great video Jesse, thanks for sharing! Learned so much and definitely have to watch it over and over for all the details you put in. Have a great start for 2020!
Thanks Jesse! You make those transitions look so easy. I'm working on it though...thx! I replayed 1:03 at .25 speed and still can't notice that transition where you filmed yourself. You just blew my mind! 😨😨😨
thanks for making time for this! questions answered! a bit of a problem for me was the story. but who knows - thanks for giving us the opportunity to watch this! you can never be perfect
Learned a lot!!! Especially that tip of the end, masking yourself in and key framing it BRILLIANT I don’t know how I never thought of that If you had a 3 hour podcast I would listen to it there is so much to learn from you that’s for the amazing content I hope you have the happiest of holidays, you’re great
Hi Jesse, can you please explain how did you mask the ikea furniture and then put that video in transition with the footage of you taking off the mask??? That was really good. Thank you!!!
Could you go more into detail about masking yourself and how you combined that with the next clip of you at your desk? Did you just overlay the last frame of the first clip to the first frame of your second clip like you did when you combined the stabilized long shot with the whip pan?
Thanks, Jesse. Do you have any video's on masking like you did in the end of the video? I've seen other video's but I like your approach to transitions and would like to see your ideas on masking transitions. Thank you!
How did I miss this. Watching the last few minutes over and over. I actually can't believe how far you've come since the Stories days, which isn't that long ago!
This is a great breakdown! TBH I’ve been shooting stories and b-roll since ‘96. I learned about in camera transitions from some great shooters in the field. This was before NLE so we had to get creative. Glad to see your emphasis on thinking through and planning the next shot! For future videos I’d love to see you thinking through how to apply this to storytelling. Great job. Looking forward to showing this to my students.
Hey Brian! I actually have a course online thats exactly that! Short form story telling. Obviously no pressure to buy it but just thought I'd give you a heads up! *edit* also thank you!!
@@JesseDriftwood thanks! Love the energy and will check it out! There are a bunch of "dinosaur" news shooters that have really great b-roll skills and I'd love to see them get into the YT market and help vlogging and other storytelling improve.
I learned I need to watch you more and practice these moves. AND, I enjoyed your story block edit as well. I’ll be sure to use your link! Thanks Jesse, great work!
Hey congrats! Your videos are really good, thanks for sharing with us your knowledge. Like your sense of humor which adds soemething nice to the final product 😃👍🏽
Wow this is amazing. I really suck at in camera transitions. Especially find it hard to cut to music. Maybe some video about cuts/transitions match with music? Happy holidays to you all 🎄
I learned things man. I leaaarnnneed things - will have to watch again
I learned about Jesse from your 'Instagram story' video, Cody, I can't thank you enough for all you've introduced to the world of film making
Star wipe aaaaaaand cut ⭐️

You articulate the point about following the camera motion very clearly. Thank you for explaining it in so much detail!
It's just like a Christmas gift from you jess 🎅⛄
I have been using whip transitions for a while now, but this video shows me how much more I can do with them. Oh you bet ya I’m going to be upping my game using these tricks. Thanks for making this vid Jesse!

The last 2 minutes were gold for me, being a solo...everything.
I liked “the more you shoot, the more you know, the more you know, the more you grow. 🙌🏼
Ugh that whip transition was so extra and I LOVE IT .
I love Jesse’s videos, the part at the end where he explained how he did the whip by himself was awesome since I’m usually by myself. OMG, the last transition, the one youre on your desk is just UNREAL, I watched frame by frame and I could not see it still.
this is filled with great tips. like using a tripod on push ins and pull outs and masking yourself in when shooting by yourself.
Just used some tips from the previous in-camera transition video yesterday while snowboarding, but I'll definitely be watching this over and over while I piece it all together. Thanks man, you're the bomb!
That last tip is friggin gold! I didn't think about masking myself in! Thanks!

This is easily one of the best and most informative video on transitions on the internet.

Thanks for the follow up Jesse. Always love the helpful hints and tips. looking forward to more in the next year.
Videos like this make me so grateful for the internet

That last effect of masking and filming yourself is brilliant! Well done!
Epic! cheers to your creative brilliance and noteworthy energy:) nice mask😊
Thanks for the tip on how to.. selfwhip - and also all the other good tips!
LOL, first 30 secs I was looking at the video date uploaded and thinking, 'haven't I seen this before!" Figured it out after that!!!! 😀
Hahaha yes! It worked!
I had the exact same thought... this looks so familiar.. check date...
haahaha me too
A+ for the Labyrinth coffee mug!! Another great video from you too Jesse! Looking forward to trying some of these things our myself in the near future!
Love the videos and how you break them down to show the process!! Thank you especially for the encouragement to keep practicing!!
This was excellent! I've got to try that masking thing. Thanks 😊

I saw you last transition video and it was great and this one is equally great. Now I just have to start creating.
Thanks for all these tips! Can't wait to try these out!
You Sir, are a talented individual! Thank you for sharing, this is going to be a goto resource for me.
Great tips...very well explained! It's great to see the thought process behind each transition.
Damn, that overlaying the clip without warp stabiliser, so simple and I have no idea how I never thought about that before, scrapped so many shots because of that

A true inspiration! You make me want to create period! Going to get my camera now! Thank you and Happy Christmas 🎄

When I think of transitions I think of you. Just like when I think of gimbal shots I think of Brandon Li. Love it. Thanks!
I'm sure many others have said this already, but Mr. Driftwood... my man... You are one of the most talented RUclipsrs out there. From day 1 I knew that....

Thank you Jesse your a beast!

This is wonderful! Thank you for making such detailed videos! I hope you continue to do so!
Fantastic! You are so creative! Please make more videos. 😄
That turned out so good! Thanks for sharing these subtle extra tips.
the sound design also helps sell the transition esp. that whooshes that comes before the next footage, sort of J Cut, right jesse?
Yeah! Definitely helps build the anticipation.
Wow, great video, love the entertainment value and how good of a teacher you are.
Classic Jesse 👌🏻

This video is full of amazing tips and tricks, but the extraordinary thing is the thought behind each shots 😮😮😮🤣🔝 Thanks ❤️
Thanks for this. I've been looking to spice up my own videos which are me just talking into the camera. Hopefully i can spice it up in a fun way.

Thanks for making it, I want take the time to plan shots out for transistions
I really respect that you actually masked yourself for that shot and shot a 'clean shot 'of the exact same shot, well played sir, well played
Thanks Jesse! You make those transitions look so easy. I'm working on it though...thx! I replayed 1:03 at .25 speed and still can't notice that transition where you filmed yourself. You just blew my mind! 😨😨😨
Really love your use of masking for self-shot transitions, never thought of that before!
Thanks Jessie! I loved the original and I am sure I will watch this several more times to extract these great ideas and use them in my own videos.
thanks for making time for this! questions answered! a bit of a problem for me was the story. but who knows - thanks for giving us the opportunity to watch this! you can never be perfect
Learned a lot!!! Especially that tip of the end, masking yourself in and key framing it BRILLIANT I don’t know how I never thought of that
If you had a 3 hour podcast I would listen to it there is so much to learn from you that’s for the amazing content I hope you have the happiest of holidays, you’re great
Those initial shots with the use of two lenses and marrying it into one shot!!! Very creative! Well done Jesse!
Just discovered your channel. Love your creativity and how you breakdown each steps.
Subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Never thought of keyframing color grade in. Thanks Jesse :)
I learned so much! Thanks, I really enjoy your transitions and I look forward to trying my hand at them
Thanks for these wonderful tips, Jesse! Let the passion burn 🥽🏂❄
That whip transition filmed of yourself by yourself is amazing. Never thought of that.

Masking yourself in just set the bar so high. So awesome! Killer video man and thank you for sharing your process
Nice. Great tutorial. Please make more of these.
Thanks man, pure gold as always, and enjoyable to watch, appreciate the help
Hi Jesse, can you please explain how did you mask the ikea furniture and then put that video in transition with the footage of you taking off the mask??? That was really good. Thank you!!!
Dude you are a king!
Could you go more into detail about masking yourself and how you combined that with the next clip of you at your desk? Did you just overlay the last frame of the first clip to the first frame of your second clip like you did when you combined the stabilized long shot with the whip pan?
Jesse, do you add the adjustment layer and then keyframe the rotation of the bag? A little lost why you added the adjustment layer for the backpack.
you're just the gift that keeps on giving, jesse lol very excited to test out the transitions and all these tips for the next time i travel!
thank you !!!!!!! just started and your awesome ! just found your channel today !!!
Aye! Thank you!
Thanks, Jesse. Do you have any video's on masking like you did in the end of the video? I've seen other video's but I like your approach to transitions and would like to see your ideas on masking transitions. Thank you!
Yeah! I’ve got a masking video in the works but just planning it out to make sure I’m not repeating myself.
For some reason I didn't think to just do the key framed color grade in the transition, so that was super valuable to me. Great video!
How did I miss this. Watching the last few minutes over and over. I actually can't believe how far you've come since the Stories days, which isn't that long ago!
Thanks for the inspiration bruh! I literally just watched your first video of the in camera transitions yesterday for the first time lol
This is a great breakdown!

Friken LEGEND! That last part of the video showing how to do a transition when you are filming by yourself 👌👌👌👌
I'd love to wach all of your old stories to see your progression over time. Cheers from Barcelona. :)
I learned I need to watch you more and practice these moves. AND, I enjoyed your story block edit as well. I’ll be sure to use your link! Thanks Jesse, great work!
Going to have to watch this 10 times just under understand the genius transitions! Last video inspired us very much. Thank You! 😍
🤯 so much info in this video. Will have to watch it a few times. Thank you so much for the Christmas gift 🎁
All great!!! But the last transition camera and key frame by your self was sick.... I'm gonna do it!! Hahahaha
I learn a lot maaan! your videos are always fully charged with creativity and great techniques!!
Hey congrats! Your videos are really good, thanks for sharing with us your knowledge. Like your sense of humor which adds soemething nice to the final product 😃👍🏽
I never thought about adjusting the color grade to smooth out transitions. Amazing video!
Awesome! I am learning so much
Wow this is amazing. I really suck at in camera transitions. Especially find it hard to cut to music. Maybe some video about cuts/transitions match with music? Happy holidays to you all 🎄
I had a whole section in this video about that but cut it because it was already so long. I’ll definitely make a follow up about that.
Making Instagram stories to learn one new thing during the process. I’m here for that. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
