I just brought this. I have just used it. Best piece of kit I have brought in years. Superbly built, value for money and amazing features. Motion control is a game changer. Thank u for providing a great review. I was going to save for a more expensive gimble, however it does everything the expensive gimble does and more. The motion tracking is amazing.
Why Mark, you don't name the products that you are reviewing in your titles and descriptions? I mean, I love your videos but this strategy of titling your videos is a bit annoying.
Before buying for the AI tracking feature, be aware of some significant limitations: if the light is less than full daylight, it will tend to lose the subject; subject needs to be fairly close, about 5 meters or less or it will tend to lose the subject (only wide-angle with this for tracking); if subject has a helmet or other gear, it may have trouble "seeing" your start/stop signals; if subject turns around, it may lose the subject; it will not re-acquire the subject once it's been lost as some of the app-based trackers can do. This is good more for close-in work indoors or outside daytime probably with a camera operator.
This is amazing! I have recently started using activetrack on my DJI Ronin SC (great gimbal for the price.) The only downside is its super cumbersome to balance your phone on top of the hot shoe, then you have to ensure sure three items are charged (phone, camera, gimbal), connect the phone to gimbal via bluetooth, and (if filming yourself) you can't see what's on the phone screen to identify and start tracking yourself. I dug around for a while hoping that DJI had a solution to this, and it appears that their best solution is the "Raveneye" transmission system which takes an hdmi feed from your camera, connects to a phone via wifi, phone connected to the gimbal via bluetooth (talk about an EMF nightmare.) The raveneye also only works with their higher end models, not the Ronin SC. The built in camera/sensor and AI features on this rig solves all of that for me. And at a price point under $300 I will definitely be giving it a go!
Not naming the product or discussing the brand is becoming a problem for me. I like you and did like the content, but you're wasting my time with this approach. And your link took me to a variety of gimbals... More time wasted. Wish you the best as you're such a nice guy and you have overall been helpful.
Hi, is it possible to change the framing of the person in angle? For example filming only the bottom half of a person ? Thank you for this great video🙏🏼
Thank you very much for the very good tutorial. I have a question, could I select a person from the app? For example, or is there a way to select a person in some way so that the AI follows my subject while I use the gimbal? Imagine this scenario... a wedding and the bride won't remember to turn around and give the ok sign... you know what I mean? How do I tell the AI gimbal camera to follow anyone I need, without them having to do anything.
I think a real limitation is that, while there are many cameras well within its advertised weight carrying capacity, many of them are outside the size they specify as maximum. This seems to be aimed at cameras around the size of a Sony ZV-E10. At least they do specify the size. Just be sure to note it before buying.
I use a z 8 and z7-2 in honesty the auto focus is not the best. Even foucs peeking needs attention as it can be if E .the idea of this tracker sounds great. Question would it improve bird photography if so it's a master stroke . I will be purchasing but into the new year. I found all your blogs helpful. You're clear and make sense in your answers.. really I enjoy the z8 it's amazing the z 40 mm f2 on the z 8 for it's price is amazing .... So I will be watching on a regular basis.thanks for your hard work and most of all your honesty. Please try a few bird shots for me using the gimbal 👃I will before- ever grateful. Or have I missed something on gimbals or found a new use for it 😅
For the price on Amazon, this is a nice gimbal. However, from what I've seen online, the Ronin SC or really anything DJI is recommended as a starting point with the Ronin SC being the cheapest one and the Ronin RSC2 being next up in the lineup. Then after your gimbal, you can get a counterweight/counterbalance and upgraded handle or dual grips of needed. The problem with the DJI that the Hohem tries to solve is that they give you an "AI camera" for object focus tracking, something DJI relies on a smartphone for. Most cinematographers in the DJI Ronin gimbal ecosystem won't need or want an "AI camera" on their gimbal because they likely have a smartphone they can use for the DJI Ronin app. This Hohem gimbal is not rated all that great on Amazon. It is said to be glitchy and the movements when tracking isn't smooth and precise. I'd stick to DJI where it is a known good brand and it just works well and can be serviced and repaired and you can get spare parts and upgrades when needed.
Hello, if you lock the tracking on one subject with the ok sign, can you change it on your smartphone? For example, you have multiple subjects in a frame, you follow the 1st subject on the first 15 seconds and follow the 2nd subject on the next 15 seconds, can you manually change the target of the tracking on a smartphone?
If it could handle a heavier load and the sensor would be able to track a little closer (zoom closer) it would be great for live events of speakers who walks around so much.
Looks like it works pretty well as gimbal and tracking is great, but sadly my setup weights more, guess I'll have to wait till they release something bigger
Sir, I conducted a search for this and other similar set-ups/functions. Overwhelmed exhausted, and disappointed, I still can't find a decent gimbal with AI. I went as high as $500 and there was still none the was fail-proof. I realize that with our super modest existence, $500 is lot of money but do folks in the city have such resources that they can pay that amount despite them(the gimbals anyway) not preforming flawlessly? Could you recommend a decent gimbal+ AI for under $500? Sincerely
I was wondering if the AI feature could be used for dogs. Is it possible to use the hand signal behind the dogs and move out of the way letting AI do the tracking on them? Just an FYI, its not hiding behind a chihuahua but a 90lb Lab!
The framing is really of interest to me. As an old school camera operator I always prided myself on keeping the subject movement going to the open space appropriately, but all the auto tracking I have seen to this point has the subject almost walking off screen before starting it's movement, so they are always closer to the edge. I mean, at the price points these gimbals are, and without any really fast motion, it is a great feature as a solo shooter to do some more natural camera movement for shots. And they are moving in the right direction (pun intended) for better framed tracking, so pretty cool overall.
Yes, but depending on the lens you mount. Look for the weigh specifications of the camera+lens if it is bellow 1200-1300 gr, it will work, unless its a very long lens tha you cant balance. The maximum I managed to balance is a Sony a7IV+Samyang 135 mm 1.8
thank you so much for the amazing reviews. I have bought many of the products that you have been reviewing and every single one of them has turned out to be great! Your reviews are honest and you are giving us amazing gems with incredibly friendly prices :) so glad to have found your channel!
Thanks for the review. I do enjoy your channel because you are fairly balanced in the way you present your information. Everyone has slight bias but you work very hard not to let it colour your presentation. I have actually bought gear that you recommended and I was very happy with the results.
Bigger up and down movements are poor gimbal technique, smaller ones/jitters are generally gimbal performance. I am not using an ND filter, so you might also be seeing the lack of motion blur, which can make the image look jumpy, especially when panning.
The gimbal stabilization is not the best. It doesn´s shake or anything, i fact if left on the floor it is rock solid, but if you move without proper ninja walk, there are small jitters, which i suspect are related to the stabilization algorithm, becouse the motors are powerfull enough for medium size cameras. Hopefully they can adress that with firmware updates, but I don´t have very high hopes.
I enjoy your videos and perspective. Have used your links for gear ive purchased. It would have been nice in this video to specify what brands it was compatible with. I'm a new Lumix SiiX user and was heart broken, because was ready to buy. Your video release even aligned with a lightening sale at that! Keep up the great work!
I am re-watching your Zhiyun Crane-M3S (Best Gimbal for the Canon M50) video. I guess, between the two, this gimbal is a better choice for my M-50 Mkii as I plan to put the camera into untrained hands, as I ask people to records me in action for my YT videos.
Has anybody used this with the Fuji X cameras? I have an old XT3 and was wondering if this would work. I notice the Amazon listing does not mention Fuji at all.
I now really wonder, if on a budget, how this would compare to the new DJI Osmo Pocket 3 which also has similar features in a more compact body? Any clue on that? Thanks!
Mark…. Ditto on the Sony auto framing, it’s cool but just kinda takes you out of the moment with that motion blur. Hohem just sent me this gimbal and it’s really interesting! I’ve been messing with the AI and my fx30 with the sigma 18-50, however I keep getting slightly cropped out top of frame, you think this works best with wide angle lenses?
I was using the a6700 and the sigma 18-50. So basically the same setup. I was mindful that the gimbal has no idea what the camera is seeing, so I may have been working with that in mind from the start. I mostly shot at 18 mm from memory, and wouldn’t have gone beyond 23mm. I have an upcoming video I plan to use it for, so will make better note of what’s going on.
@@markwiemels yeah I think you are right, I tried messing with it and seemed to only work left and right. I’ll try squatting down more so I start lower and maybe that will help 😂 thanks Mark!
@@ReachFilms For sure the "Next Level" for this type of setup would to be able to tell the gimbal the focal length being used, based on sensor size, so it could estimate the FOV.

Don´t rely on that for that particular situation. It is too high stakes and asking the bride to do the ok sign at that moment is a little out of my comfort zone. But it works great for following shots at other more relaxed moments
I should have mentioned this in the video. It probably wouldn't track at that distance. They say up to 3.5 meters, but it worked for me up to about 9 meters, so about 10 yards maximum.

I'm thinking about starting the video and looking for a gimbal, this looks like an excellent choice for beginners.. but my camera is an x-t3.. and I'm not sure if it would work well with it. regards, Paul
Yes, it will work depending on the lens you mount. The maximum I managed to balance is a Sony a7IV+Samyang 135 mm 1.8 which is 1430 gr (230 gr over max spec)
Your video is nice. but I have a pro tips for You. 1. Add a small headlight to distinguish yourself from the background and enhance the depth of field. 2. The headroom needs to be wider than it currently is. In this video, there's virtually no headroom, and some of your hair is getting cut off. 3. Consider capturing a series of B-roll shots. Since you're discussing the Gimbal, it's important to demonstrate its capabilities by showing the audience a variety of shots featuring the Gimbal in action.
He is a one man team (maybe except some help from his daughter to hold a gimbal once in a while) with a high rate of upload. Only minimalist videos can allow him to upload so often.
I have a Zhiyun Crane M2S and a Canon M6 Mark II and I find the M2S to be a little underpowered for the M6 Mark II, especially when I want to use one of the "larger" lens for the camera. So I'm looking to upgrade to a more powerful gimbal. I love the idea of AI tracking. That would help me out a lot because I don't have a lot of experience, but I don't want to trade one underpowered gimbal for another underpowered gimbal. (Both gimbals list the M6 Mark II as supported, heck the Hohem seems like it supports the M6 Mark II better than the Zhiyun. That being said, supported with the pancake lens is different than supporting it with a larger lens.) So, will the Hohem MT2 handle my M6 Mark II better than the Zhiyan Crane M2S?? Also, how is the ease of balancing? The sliders on the M2S make balancing a bit of a challenge. Is the MT2 any better?
The payload on the Crane M2S is 2.15lbs so it's for smaller and lighter setups. The iSteady MT2 is for up to 2.6lbs so it supports a tad more. Weigh your camera with the lenses you usually use and see how close you're getting to those limits.
Does the AI tracking work without a clear view of the face? Like if you were wearing a motorcycle helmet? Also, would you be able to start the tracking and then walk out of view, maybe around a corner, to start the shot and have it pick up tracking as soon as you come into view?
I haven´t tried it with a helmet, but it should work, as it is tracking the body once it picks up the "ok" sign. It track you even if you have your back turn on it. I tried to hide from it behind a shelf for a second and it stops tracking, but regain track immediately after me reapearing in the frame. I don´t know how long it waits for you, but you definetly can pull off the "around the corner" shot.
@ViktorStudiosOficial Awesome! Thanks for the update. I'm going to have to try it out for my channel. Probably set one up on a trail, hit record and then sprint back to my motorcycle, lol
Do you know if they are going to offer a beefier model for professionals? R5c + Rf lenses and accessories could be 5 plus lbs…. So for me we have to go main line brands….
This gimbal looks very cool. Here's a question: can its AI follow just hands? I'm bored of static framing and thinking about cooking and tech show where only hands are visible in the frame? The case would be to follow the hands but have an imposed movement range so the camera doesn't go further, it's to avoid filming outside of the decor. A LIMIT | range of following the hands | B LIMIT.
M3s is smoother overall, but lacks the tracking feature. If your camera has IBIS or good digital IS, you won’t notice the difference, but if it doesn’t the M3s will be smoother and it will be noticeable.
First of all thanks for your super fast respond. I own a Canon M50 II so im just beginning my journey. I think the M3S would be the better Option for this Camera@@markwiemels
Yey, I just bought the second one, using your link (and discount code... thank you very much). BTW, which Gimbal would you think would be the best candidate for an M-50 mkII with a small prompter that would take the iPhone 14 pro as a screen? Prompter would most likely be attached to the kit lens, for selfie walkaround shots. I tried doing that with this gimbal, but it cannot handle the weight as I cannot even perform the balancing calibration.
@@markwiemels I just did some more searches and a couple of other people posted videos for prompters on gimbals. I guess I'll have to buy a third one, but unfortunately it won't have the AI tracking. BTW, I'm the same user as Frankentronics, I just happen to be signed in with to my main channel. I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. Very helpful and very informative.
Mark, can you please do a low-light talking head comparison between Sony alpha cameras? Was gonna get a ZV-E10 (w/ Viltrox f1.4), but looks like it's not sharp enough in low light, have to spend an extra $2K to get full-frame and even then I dunno if it delivers.
very interesting. any idea how well this gamble will work with Lumix s5 paired with canon 24-70? I mostly use vintage lenses but only have one auto focus lens.
Exactly what I search for a long time. What if I go behind tree for a moment or something like that? I doing my shots alone so this could be help film myself 'cause no one can operate the camera.
@@markwiemels... and another questions: 1. Is it possinle to switch off beep sound (on wedding)? 2. On wedding I can't tell to the bride/groom: make gestures! So somebody try to make gesture from behind the camera? What happening?
Yes, it will work depending on the lens you mount. Look for the weight specifications of the camera+lens if it is bellow 1200-1300 gr, it will work, unless its a very long lens tha you cannot balance. the tracking is actually super cool. i've ALWAYS hated using a gimbal because i never feel like im in control of the camera, even after 4 years.
Honestly, it’s freakin mind bowing. I have a feeling that we will see this in most gimbals in the future.
Also using the stabilisation in Davinci Resolve will take care of those minor jitters and make it a smooth as butter.

Yes, it will work depending on the lens you mount. Look for the weight specifications of the camera+lens if it is bellow 1200-1300 gr, it will work, unless its a very long lens tha you cannot balance.
I listen to most videos at 2x speed, so not super relevant to me
It would be nice if you could use the AI via App or otherwise to track objects like cars, dogs, etc.
That being said, supported with the pancake lens is different than supporting it with a larger lens.)
So, will the Hohem MT2 handle my M6 Mark II better than the Zhiyan Crane M2S??
@@FreeTimeAdventures the tracking range is around 10 maybe 15 meters. I don´t think it will follow you in that scenario.
@@ViktorStudiosOficial hmm, that's tough. Maybe if it's tight enough trails, but yeah that's a tight limit
No, from my experience it follows the "center of mass" of your body, accounting for the additional framing. It cannot follow hands specifically
@@ViktorStudiosOficial thank you for the answer. Appreciate.
Cool! Very nice gimbal… Just a matter of time til someone copies this idea. Nice video!
Guaranteed. I suspect it will happen fast.
Would you say thats better than the Zhiyun Crane M3S? I'm so close to buying one but i cant decided which one ?
M3s is smoother overall, but lacks the tracking feature. If your camera has IBIS or good digital IS, you won’t notice the difference, but if it doesn’t the M3s will be smoother and it will be noticeable.
First of all thanks for your super fast respond. I own a Canon M50 II so im just beginning my journey. I think the M3S would be the better Option for this Camera@@markwiemels
@@rlx5762 yeah, that’s a good setup.
what about low light condition, can it still track ?
That’s a great question, I have not used it in low light.
My ronin does the same, I just need a phone for tracking.
Hmm... I'm not really sure, the way the way the weight is distributed would make it hard to say, it my need a really big gimbal.
Thanks for the video. I really like your content
thats the new sony a6700? what lens?
Yes. Sigma 18-50 f2.8
I bought the ZV-E10 with the Sony 15mm 1.4f, I took some very clear photos in low light just yesterday, this is all about spending in good lens
what about video? I have decent lighting on the talent so can overexpose, but bg is dark, which worries me @@_HalfDuck_
Dang, this is cool
>I couldn't even loose it if i tried
Now imagine a gun on it. We have no chance against the robots.
Lol
very interesting. any idea how well this gamble will work with Lumix s5 paired with canon 24-70? I mostly use vintage lenses but only have one auto focus lens.
Do you use an addapter for the Canon lens? If so, it probably wont work or it will be at the very limit.
@@ViktorStudiosOficial yes vintage adapter eos to lumix but modern has only eos to lumix
@@ViktorStudiosOficial yes canon ef-l
I'd sell my rsc2 to get this.. Using the Raveneye is such a chore, changes the stabilization so have to reconfigure.. Ugh!!
Great Review! Tx 🙏
Hi,so if i have old GH5 i do not think it is gonna be compatible with this tracker ,so you mean I still could use this gimbal?
Yes
Exactly what I search for a long time. What if I go behind tree for a moment or something like that?
I doing my shots alone so this could be help film myself 'cause no one can operate the camera.
Yes, you can pass by and behind objects, no problem. I’m not sure how long you could “hide” behind something, but you can bass behind stuff for sure.
@@markwiemels thanks for the fast answer!
Regards!
@@markwiemels... and another questions:
1. Is it possinle to switch off beep sound (on wedding)?
2. On wedding I can't tell to the bride/groom: make gestures! So somebody try to make gesture from behind the camera? What happening?
Hello Mark. Is this good for Leica SL2 with Leica SL 24 to 90 lens?
No, the lens is way too heavy and long
“They had no say in the video even though they sponsored me. But, If I say anything bad about this product, I will lose them as a sponsor.”
Very cool. Sadly my camera is too big.
Will this work with Fuji bodies?
Yes, it will work depending on the lens you mount. Look for the weight specifications of the camera+lens if it is bellow 1200-1300 gr, it will work, unless its a very long lens tha you cannot balance. might actually get this gimbal
DUDE! Niiiiiice.
I gave a like just for the shot of your daughter chasing you down the street lol
Hi Mark. The 20% off code doesn’t work.
Thanks, I just checked and you are right. I have emailed the company, hopefully will be able to get it back going.
Thanks
@@alanfrgz should work now, I think it's USA only.
Yes! It works. I just ordered it. Thank you so much.@@markwiemels
The skateboarder in me NEEDS to know where that underpass is
Do me a favor. Make some paper hand signals on sticks and see if it’ll read that. My hands are disabled so I can’t make hand gestures.
I'm not sure how a $450 gimbal can be classified as "budget." Even Dji's (which i thought was expensive) more affordable
Hey just my opinion, don’t wear a black shirt when you are showing off a black gimbal. 😊😊
Pressed the like button twice. Once for your poor daughter ;)
If only it would track an object
nearly 4,000 views and no comments??
But can it track the correct twin in a group of people? 😂
Yes.
DJI Pocket 3 better not have a pipsqueak camera it better have what the mavic 3 pro's have
Budget where
is £330 regarded as 'budget'?
Does it smell? No joke. Some gimbals smell like tyre rubber
