  • The church "Maria Am Gestade" is a Gothic Roman Catholic church in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt, near the Danube Canal. It was the traditional church of the Danube boatmen. The name is derived from the church's former location on the high shore of an arm of the Danube, which was still unregulated at the time. Maria am Gestade, together with the Peterskirche and the Ruprechtskirche, is one of the oldest churches in Vienna.
There was originally a chapel here, which is said to have been built in the 9th century
It was first mentioned indirectly in 1137; explicitly for the first time in a document from the year 1200. The ownership structure of the property was relatively unclear - it was transferred back and forth between the Schottenstift, Viennese citizens' families and the Bishop of Passau. From 1302 the church was owned by the Lords of Greif, who had the choir rebuilt between 1330 and 1355 and probably designed it as a family burial place. The church later fell to the bishops of Passau, in whose possession it remained even after Vienna was elevated to a diocese in 1469.
After the church fell into disrepair during the 18th century, it was in danger of being demolished and served as a warehouse and horse stable. It was re-consecrated in 1812 and subsequently came to the Redemptorist Order. The Gothic choir windows were brought to Laxenburg and installed in the Franzensburg there. The church was restored around 1900 and again around 1930 - this particularly affected the portal figures. The church now serves as a place of worship for the Czech and Slovak communities in Vienna.
The church is designed in three parts. It consists of a choir accentuated by a high roof and buttresses, a south tower located almost in the middle and a single-nave nave. Work on the tower was completed in 1429. The Hornberg votive picture from 1462 is of art historical importance. It is located in the Clemens Chapel. The large organ in the west gallery was built in 1911 by the organ builder Matthäus Mauracher Jr. (Salzburg) built.
