Wow I am actually surprised that the ANC on the XM4s performed worse for you. I've tried the XM4s in a Sony store (with many people and loud kids inside) alongside the XM3s a week ago, and the XM3s let in quite some chatter and was distracting in comparison to the XM4s. With the XM4s on, I wasn't really distracted by the loud kids playing the demo PS4 even when I wasn't playing music. Also, one time I got too close to the store entrance with the XM4s on and they set off the security tag alarm, but I didn't notice at all until a staff hurriedly came over to cancel the alarm XD Still, interesting results, and if you are doing follow up videos on the XM4s, I am really looking forward to them! Thank you for all the dedication in making this video!

I picked up the xm4 for £250. Pretty decent. Music isn't as good as my Sennheisers but they aren't really directly comparible.

I agree on that we are indeed watching videos to hear these opinions. I bought xm3 for my gf, they are decent sounding and with ANC off the bass is not overwhelming. However I can probably relate to aduio quality as I use AKG headphone monitors for general day-to-day listening and find them bteer sounding and more natural while less expensive at the same time.

I use my xm4’s with my iPad while my wife watches tv. I find the xm4’s block more of the tv voices than my xm3’s did. To me, the xm4’s have improved anc over the xm3’s. Overall I think the xm4’s are a worthwhile upgrade from the xm3’s based on features and anc. Really enjoy you reviews.

A couple very tiny things that I think every reviewer missed is that the headphone "sounds" are updated too they're more clear and less 'harsh' and one other thing is that if you look closely around the XM3 buttons there are like 'manufacturer cut out lines' whilst on the XM4 they are now gone. Not really important things but worth mentioning
Speak to chat is actually nice when you realize how easy it is to activate & deactivate. Just form your index & middle fingers like a “V” & place them on opposite sides of the touch surface. 2 seconds to activate/deactivate. And you can talk w/o holding your hand to your head but also not have to leave it activated.

Totally agree with you on the Quick Attention and Speak to Chat. Definitely the way to go should be to pause with the hand and resume until you double tap. I have been using the Speak to Chat feature and any sound you make will stop the audio which is pretty annoying.

"Speak-to-Chat" works fine. It has a setting for the sensitivity and if u set it to low sensitivity it won't activate from laughs, coughs, mumbling, etc. But it reduces the battery of the headphones with 30% so it's not worth it in my opinion.
You should definitely do a comparison between the Sony 1000-XM4 and the Bose NC 700, since Sony has now bridged the gap between them with better mics and multi device connectivity
Multiple comparisons have already been published regarding both of those. All in all it ends up between choosing a slightly better ANC and way better mic ANC using the Bose NC 700 over the Sony WH-1000XM4 or a more punchy (bass oriented) sound using the Sony WH-1000XM4 over a more neutral sound using the Bose NC 700.
Great review. Had the XM2 and this is definitely an upgrade for me. Exactly as described in the Video - it’s much lighter, more comfortable, larger cups and covers my whole ears, same Sony signature sounding, better sound stage and so much easier to fold em and store them in the case. I haven’t tested the 360 audio yet and used the ear analyzer. My only issue is this, appreciate if any can share as well. The ANC. Surprisingly it barely blocked out my kids singing and loud chatter. And I was able to like clearly hear conversation, and this was on the fullest noise cancellation settings (albeit no music was played, just ANC on). I never experienced this with my XM2… it blocked out all chatter and voices… it was a faint whisper at most.. but other wind rumbling noise was a bit more obvious… Anyone else experienced this? Or did I end up with a faulty unit?
Try doing the calibration. It truly helps. I’ve measured performance differences in the past. But as of late 2021. The xm3 still have better anc than the XM4

I have exactly the same experience. XM4 has much worse ANC than XM2. I though it was broken, so sent to support. They replaced main board and ANC mic, but still the same. I compared another piece in the shop and still the same :( software version 2.5.1

I love your reviews. Especially when you talk about the fit. Many reviewers don't take into account big head folks and only focus on sound quality etc. What's the point of good sound quality if these things can't be worn for more than an hour and gives you headache!
You know, I watched your review two years ago on the 100xm2's and you ultimately convinced me to buy them, don't get me wrong, I STILL LOVE THEM, but I don't know If I want to spend another &350 just for some better comfort and ANC.
The worst thing for me on this is the touchpad. I don't understand the constant urge for companies to replace good tactile buttons with shitty touchscreens/pads that have zero tactile feedback. The touch controls are super clunky, makes you look dorky as you fiddle with your right earcup to lower volume when someone is trying to talk to you and just flat out don't work many times because you didn't do the gesture right. Not to mention that years down the line if the touch pad stops working, I lose access all shortcuts as opposed to when a button stops working, I only lose access to that specific shortcut.
Honestly, i think that the ear sensor completely netages the quick attention feature. Because, why would you hold your hand to your headphones during your whole conversation, when you could just simply get them off your ears and rest it on your neck, since it pauses the music immediately. (and hearing with your own ear is still way cleaner and more personal, than trough a speaker that amplyfies your environment)

Just curious, where do you get the headphone stands shown in the video? I currently hang mine on the side of my work (from home) monitor which leaves a lil bit of ... face grease (lol?) on the monitor screen.
You say that they both sound the same but I've noticed sound signature changes between xm3 and xm4. On xm4 the sound is less prominent at the low end as xm3, making it more controlled and more punchy. I also think they tweaked the mid-range because it seems to me that the voices sound clearer. On the xm3 I felt they buried the voices too much in the mix.
They could easily fix the quick attention in a software update so the dont have to remake the headphones, so simple yet so confusing to sony. Good job 👍.
Perhaps you should have mentioned that only the LEFT earcup has become significantly larger or deeper due to the sensor. The right earpiece has only gotten slightly larger and is not really noticeable.

I'd really appreciate it if you release updated mini-videos on these headphones as they upgrade the firmware to see if they improve ANC. In general, not enough reviewers revisit a piece of tech they review after initial "impressions" (besides something like "Thoughts after 36 hours" nonsense), and I like reviewers that will continuously inform potential buyers of the benefits of long-term ownership of a popular piece of equipment. On the other hand, I also understand that posting videos about gear that isn't trending anymore may destroy your viewership if the RUclips algorithm suddenly determines you aren't a channel that would be relevant to user's interests. Again, would be great if you can do this.
Gymcaddy, Thanks for this really in-depth review! I'm very glad you went deep into the earpads. One thing that needs to be mentioned that is different on the XM4's is the earpads aren't replaceable like they were are on the earlier models. I heard rumors, so I went to Sony's site and chatted with support. They confirmed that the earpads on the XM4's aren't replaceable. This is baffling as my headphone earpads do tend to wear out around 8 to 12 months in. It's a bummer for sure. Thanks again for the review! vgv
I have the 1000xm2's and I really can't see a big enough reason to spend another $300+ to upgrade to the 1000xm4. I love my 1000xm2's! Hands down the Sony XM headsets drown out more noise then any other headset, including the BOSE. From a fit, battery, and noise cancellation standpoint, there isn't enough new features in this review to justify an upgrade. Unless you have a passion for the latest headsets or you want to throw away money.
I got the 1000XM4 and this hissing (do you mean this with high pitched sound, that sounds like a artifical waterfall far away), do you think I should try the 1000XM3s? Other watchers, do you have the same problem with hissing?
Very good and interesting review, especially the comparison with the XM2s made it complete! It’s a bit weird that according to your results, the ANC is slightly worse and the sound is the same as the XM3s though, because from other reviews the opposite was true.
I recently bought the XM3s and it is so satisfying to see this review. I will probably wait for the XM5 or 6 to upgrade hoping for some kickass features and improvements by then
Very good review, I actually own both the XM3 & the XM4 and I do find the XM$4s do fit me better and a more comfortable, I also find at least in my case the ANC to be slightly better blocking out the sound of my family chattering around me as i read and study. I also enjoy and find the ability to connect to two devices one of the biggest addition in this unit. I actually returned my Bose after receiving the XM4’s. Though noise canceling simular, the sound quality is superior on the XM4’s. I also found the clamping force of the Bose to be unbearable. I recommend the XM4”s

What I love about Sony is their if it's not broke don't fix it apoch , with the XM3-XM4 I really like the design of it & the look not to mention bank for you buck hard case aeroplane adaptor & aux cable Aswell as USB c changing. I'ma pick myself up the Black XM4'S

The very first thing I noticed was the difference in ANC between xm3 and xm4. Xm3 are ahead when it comes to this feature, which is arguably the main selling feature. Fix this, Sony!
Detail review as always, just wonder why is there latency when trying to monitor audio in Final Cut Pro .Does that mean it is not ideal to use them in wireless mode when trying to edit videos ?
I have the XM3 and have also had the Bose QC-35II. My beef with the XM3 is that the ear cups are too shallow - I hate that my ears rest against the inner liner. Also, I have long ear lobes so the headphone's outer pad rests on my ear lobe but this seems unavoidable since the Bose also has similar dimensions. I prefer the comfort of the Bose QC-35II with its deeper ear cups. I also hate the blue flashing light on my XM3 - I'm afraid of annoying others especially in a dark place. Overall, I love the superior sound of my Sony!
I got the xm4’s because Best Buy didn’t have the xm3 and the Bose 700 was at a higher price. So far been using them everyday and it really makes music Immersive. The EQ took time to learn but now I got my custom EQ figured out I’m happy with them. The clamping force is comfortable for 5-6 hours of continuous without taking them off. These are my first pair of premium ANC headphones and I’m impressed.
Korvus well that’s a tricky one depending on how tall your hair is but it will leave a dent in your hair lol. I even extended the headphones max size and it still rested on my head but like its still comfortable. Hope this helps. I’m not sure if there’s headphones that don’t leave a dent but I’m more of a comfort over all things tech person. If it’s not comfortable to ware then I’m not using them.
@@adenoidhinkel I think this flew over your head good sir. He means if you bought a pair of 1000XM3 right now they would have the same case as the 1000XM4. Where as last year, they had their original case. So they updated the cases with time which takes away yet another advantage of the 1000XM4. That flew over your head as I've explained lol

I have bose QC 35 and all old bose versions, very good. Now I'm considering to buy sony xm3 or 4 just for watching movies and listening to music throw laptop, nothing else no using app or using with iphone, is xm4 more comfort comparing to xm3 and bose QC 35?
I don't understand why the XM3 and XM4 are sounding the same. On XM3 you can only use the equalizer and clear bass when they are SBC, but on the XM4 you can use this on LDAC at a much higher rate. This should sound much better or am I missing something? I own the XM3 and thinking about getting the XM4 because of this
Sony, if you’re reading this right now, if you can make it so that Speak-to-Chat doesn’t randomly activate when you’re just laughing or singing along, make the ANC on the M4’s even the slightest bit better than the M3’s, keep LDAC when switching devices, and being able to use the Type C port as an audio jack, and being able to wirelessly charge your headphones like Bose’s can with their case, these headphones would make it game over for all other noise cancellers...!!!
Maybe that's why they never tried to implement bluetooth multiple pairing device in the first place if LDAC doesn't work well with that frecuency mode.
i’ve managed to find the sony xm3’s for quite a low price (£159 whatev that is in dollars) is it worth getting them now or should i just go with different headphones within the price range
I just bought xm3 a couple days ago and i find that this headphone does not feel comfortable at all so i plan to return it and brought xm4 and need to add extra 85$ more(i dunno men..)....so did u think it's worth it to add extra money for that?🤧 (2 connection device also nice)

I have exactly the same experience. XM4 has much worse ANC than XM2. I though it was broken, so sent to support. They replaced main board and ANC mic, but still the same. I compared another piece in the shop and still the same :( software version 2.5.1

I love your reviews. Especially when you talk about the fit. Many reviewers don't take into account big head folks and only focus on sound quality etc. What's the point of good sound quality if these things can't be worn for more than an hour and gives you headache!
You know, I watched your review two years ago on the 100xm2's and you ultimately convinced me to buy them, don't get me wrong, I STILL LOVE THEM, but I don't know If I want to spend another &350 just for some better comfort and ANC.

The worst thing for me on this is the touchpad. I don't understand the constant urge for companies to replace good tactile buttons with shitty touchscreens/pads that have zero tactile feedback. The touch controls are super clunky, makes you look dorky as you fiddle with your right earcup to lower volume when someone is trying to talk to you and just flat out don't work many times because you didn't do the gesture right. Not to mention that years down the line if the touch pad stops working, I lose access all shortcuts as opposed to when a button stops working, I only lose access to that specific shortcut.
I m still with my baby mdr 1000x ! Love them to this day
Honestly, i think that the ear sensor completely netages the quick attention feature. Because, why would you hold your hand to your headphones during your whole conversation, when you could just simply get them off your ears and rest it on your neck, since it pauses the music immediately. (and hearing with your own ear is still way cleaner and more personal, than trough a speaker that amplyfies your environment)

Thanks for the video! I have the xm3’s and LOVE them, they have been life changing. Probably won’t be upgrading any time soon because money is tight. Just curious, where do you get the headphone stands shown in the video? I currently hang mine on the side of my work (from home) monitor which leaves a lil bit of ... face grease (lol?) on the monitor screen.
You say that they both sound the same but I've noticed sound signature changes between xm3 and xm4. On xm4 the sound is less prominent at the low end as xm3, making it more controlled and more punchy. I also think they tweaked the mid-range because it seems to me that the voices sound clearer. On the xm3 I felt they buried the voices too much in the mix.
Can you make mx3s sound like mx4s by adjusting the EQ?

And what about the difference in sound signature when you turn ANC on? The XM3's had a huge change in sound quality when I turned on noise cancelling.
this might be the new DSEE Extreme they have, which basically tries to tighten up everything a little more, while digitally upscaling your music

Perhaps you should have mentioned that only the LEFT earcup has become significantly larger or deeper due to the sensor. The right earpiece has only gotten slightly larger and is not really noticeable.

I'd really appreciate it if you release updated mini-videos on these headphones as they upgrade the firmware to see if they improve ANC. In general, not enough reviewers revisit a piece of tech they review after initial "impressions" (besides something like "Thoughts after 36 hours" nonsense), and I like reviewers that will continuously inform potential buyers of the benefits of long-term ownership of a popular piece of equipment. On the other hand, I also understand that posting videos about gear that isn't trending anymore may destroy your viewership if the RUclips algorithm suddenly determines you aren't a channel that would be relevant to user's interests. Again, would be great if you can do this.
I plan on doing a firmware update video. That's why I'm pointing it out so much in my videos

Thanks for this really in-depth review! I'm very glad you went deep into the earpads. One thing that needs to be mentioned that is different on the XM4's is the earpads aren't replaceable like they were are on the earlier models. I heard rumors, so I went to Sony's site and chatted with support. They confirmed that the earpads on the XM4's aren't replaceable. This is baffling as my headphone earpads do tend to wear out around 8 to 12 months in. It's a bummer for sure.

I have the 1000xm2's and I really can't see a big enough reason to spend another $300+ to upgrade to the 1000xm4. I love my 1000xm2's! Hands down the Sony XM headsets drown out more noise then any other headset, including the BOSE. From a fit, battery, and noise cancellation standpoint, there isn't enough new features in this review to justify an upgrade. Unless you have a passion for the latest headsets or you want to throw away money.
Same here I have the XM2 and just look at videos to see if they convince me but nah I only use them maybe an hour a day and they do the job
I got the 1000XM4 and this hissing (do you mean this with high pitched sound, that sounds like a artifical waterfall far away), do you think I should try the 1000XM3s? Other watchers, do you have the same problem with hissing?
i have the xm4 and sitting in a quiet room with my fan blowing, no music playing, i hear a higher frequency through the xm4s.
Go read on reddit, many complains on the xm4 hissing and the xm3 not hissing.

It’s a bit weird that according to your results, the ANC is slightly worse and the sound is the same as the XM3s though, because from other reviews the opposite was true.
The ANC It is poorer! That's why I return my XM4's. Plus, I didn't like how hot the earpads get.

Very good review, I actually own both the XM3 & the XM4 and I do find the XM$4s do fit me better and a more comfortable, I also find at least in my case the ANC to be slightly better blocking out the sound of my family chattering around me as i read and study. I also enjoy and find the ability to connect to two devices one of the biggest addition in this unit. I actually returned my Bose after receiving the XM4’s. Though noise canceling simular, the sound quality is superior on the XM4’s. I also found the clamping force of the Bose to be unbearable. I recommend the XM4”s

There just aren’t $350 worth of upgrades from the XM3. And that wear sensor looks like it would affect the sound. No buy for me.
After a couple of hours of constant use, the wear sensor stops working all together due to condensation.
Any idea if it is worth spending 100$ more for 4 over 3 I do not have either?

The very first thing I noticed was the difference in ANC between xm3 and xm4. Xm3 are ahead when it comes to this feature, which is arguably the main selling feature. Fix this, Sony!

Detail review as always, just wonder why is there latency when trying to monitor audio in Final Cut Pro .Does that mean it is not ideal to use them in wireless mode when trying to edit videos ?
I have the XM3 and have also had the Bose QC-35II. My beef with the XM3 is that the ear cups are too shallow - I hate that my ears rest against the inner liner. Also, I have long ear lobes so the headphone's outer pad rests on my ear lobe but this seems unavoidable since the Bose also has similar dimensions. I prefer the comfort of the Bose QC-35II with its deeper ear cups. I also hate the blue flashing light on my XM3 - I'm afraid of annoying others especially in a dark place. Overall, I love the superior sound of my Sony!

I got the xm4’s because Best Buy didn’t have the xm3 and the Bose 700 was at a higher price. So far been using them everyday and it really makes music Immersive. The EQ took time to learn but now I got my custom EQ figured out I’m happy with them. The clamping force is comfortable for 5-6 hours of continuous without taking them off. These are my first pair of premium ANC headphones and I’m impressed.
Korvus well that’s a tricky one depending on how tall your hair is but it will leave a dent in your hair lol. I even extended the headphones max size and it still rested on my head but like its still comfortable. Hope this helps. I’m not sure if there’s headphones that don’t leave a dent but I’m more of a comfort over all things tech person. If it’s not comfortable to ware then I’m not using them.

Where as last year, they had their original case. So they updated the cases with time which takes away yet another advantage of the 1000XM4. That flew over your head as I've explained lol

@@xkyoshi11 it's the new XM4s and they have a built in microphone, 5 in total, which is 1 more than the XM3s. You can't see them if that's what your asking. Its definitely fixed in place and not going anywhere if that's what you mean. I probably sound retarded lol

I don't understand why the XM3 and XM4 are sounding the same. On XM3 you can only use the equalizer and clear bass when they are SBC, but on the XM4 you can use this on LDAC at a much higher rate. This should sound much better or am I missing something? I own the XM3 and thinking about getting the XM4 because of this
Sony, if you’re reading this right now, if you can make it so that Speak-to-Chat doesn’t randomly activate when you’re just laughing or singing along, make the ANC on the M4’s even the slightest bit better than the M3’s, keep LDAC when switching devices, and being able to use the Type C port as an audio jack, and being able to wirelessly charge your headphones like Bose’s can with their case, these headphones would make it game over for all other noise cancellers...!!!
Also removing the ding sound notification when the noice cancelling environment changes. 🤦🏽♂️
Maybe that's why they never tried to implement bluetooth multiple pairing device in the first place if LDAC doesn't work well with that frecuency mode.

I just bought xm3 a couple days ago and i find that this headphone does not feel comfortable at all so i plan to return it and brought xm4 and need to add extra 85$ more(i dunno men..)....so did u think it's worth it to add extra money for that?🤧 (2 connection device also nice)

They put a small mic in the earpad while they're wearing it, some have a dedicated microphone set up just for sound demoing
