Back in '74--I'm only 18---left the girlfriend's house early one night, and stopped in at the service station I worked at, on dayshift. They were about to close, and the afternoon shift mechanic (his 2nd job, older guy) grabbed the key to the wrecker, a 3/4 ton F-250, and handed it to ME--a family on vacation from Ohio, in a 4 door '66 Caddy, pulling an 18 ft. travel trailer, was up on I-94, broke down--bad water pump. He wanted me to tow 'em in, and the dayshift mechanic could put a new water pump on the engine. I told him, "Ralph, I'm not even on the clock." Not a self centered type, I was just pointing out that I was on "my" time. He told ME, "don't WORRY about it, I'm punching you IN. I can't send one of these KIDS up there." (All minors) We had a nice timeclock system, in a GAS STATION! LOL I took the father of the family back to their vehicle, and pulled the whole rig, trailer and ALL, the family inside, off the freeway. Do you think even ONE big rig moved over to the center lane, while my feet were near the edge of the shoulder, laying on my back, putting J-hook chains in place? Of course, not! That truck had manual steering--that night, the front end was so high because of the load behind me, it had "power" steering! Anyway, I got them to a safe, secure location at our station, and backed 'em into place, nice and neat. Then I went into the back room, grabbed an extension cord, and ran it through the exhaust hose hole in one of our 3 big roll up doors, so the family would have electricity to power their trailer. Next day, we hooked them up, and they were on their way, to enjoy their vacation! lol

@@chrissi.enbyYT Hit it on the nail. This is definitely because of insurance. They don't care if his act was heroic, they just see $$$ signs flying out the window. Insurance may even try to refuse to pay out for the damages because it was intentional. But either way that plays out, they will blacklist the driver and won't cover company vehicles he drives going forward. Which in turn will force the towing company to fire him. They don't care about anything but logistics and numbers. This is just the sad state of affairs unfortunately. Insurance companies have done this many times in the past. An example would be several years ago, when a teen stole his grandparents car and went joy riding around the neighborhood at high speeds. There where kids around, and this kid was flying down the streets, and driving through the park. One of the parents jumped into his truck, and rammed into the kid to stop him. Insurance refused to cover any of the damages, because he "intentionally" hit the kid. Insurance doesn't care about why you do something. They just care that you did do something. Something that could cost them money. The parent in the story above was made whole by his community, several business's nearby chipped in, and fixed his truck and even gave him some upgrades as a thank you. Shame on the tow company, damaged work truck, yes. Person allowed to live another day, yes. Family allowed to have their father/husband safe yes. Which would you prefer.
Let’s look at what party was truly intelligent here... Him: “I can get a new job, he can’t get a new life.” Job: “it was a liability we do not want, you should have let him die. You’re fired.” If the company that previously employed him was truly not a pile of shit then they would fire the man that fired him and reinstate him as the manager. Knowing when to make the appropriate judgement calls quickly is a great asset to a company to divert disaster. Yes, this could have been a bad thing if handled just slightly differently. However it wasn’t. It was handled remarkably well and in the end we have a very intelligent person who saved the life of another in need. I see no reason to do anything but commend him for his heroic act. After all shouldn’t we be judged for accomplishments as well as our failures?
Being over-generous and playing devil's advocate, it's also possible that when he called in to tell them to let the receiver of the truck's goods, (at worst let's pretend it was chicken eggs on schedule to hatch soon) know about the several hours/(day?) delay, he did not explain the extreme nature of the situation well, so that on the phone it's just sounded impulsive. Still callous, mean and boneheaded, but people have short memories and they're probably doing just fine.
Lol...and lost it with one choice of vehicle and firing someone over a heroic act to save others because he decided a company vehicle totaled was better than people dying. Guess which insurance company I will NEVER return to???

@@mikehunt9545 No business survives after press this bad, either. Their company was inevitably finished regardless of the actions they took. Keep him, insurance company screws them. Fire him, media screws them.
Honestly they could have had a lot of great publicity if they'd kept him because of people wanting to support a hero but nope they didn't think of that
I heard a story similar to this: A life guard on a beach saw a person (I think they might have even been a child) clearly struggling to stay afloat and they of course went and dragged them to the shore. But the beach was divided into zones and each zone had a life guard, the life guard went into another life guard's zone and got fired for literally saving a life when someone else was "supposed to do it"
Just from memory, but I believe it was that the resort hired the life guard and the adjacent public beach didn't have one. So it wasn't just someone else was supposed to do it, but he was supposed to just let those people drown because they didn't pay his employer.
It certainly would be nice to have that award title on his resume, might make an eye catch in future interviews with employers who are worth noting the good in this man.

If the company that previously employed him was truly not a pile of shit then they would fire the man that fired him and reinstate him as the manager.
The owner would have made the decision. The owners have managers to do the dirty work for them.
Just from memory, but I believe it was that the resort hired the life guard and the adjacent public beach didn't have one. So it wasn't just someone else was supposed to do it, but he was supposed to just let those people drown because they didn't pay his employer.
