Polaris now owns the Indian name and has designed this new engine. The rest of the bike is now being designed. This Demo was at the 2013 Wilbraham Hillclimb
I bought a springfield and couldn't be happier. Nice power, very good handling, good brakes. I don't hear any engine noise. At least when I compare it to my shovelhead.
Julio Smith I was looking at the Springfield when I bought my Street Glide. Indian dealership just wouldn’t negotiate at all. Offered $2k less on my trade in than Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson dealer waived the set up charges and freight. Indian wouldn’t budge so I bought the SG. Had Indian matched Harley’s price and terms It would’ve been a tough choice because I really liked the Springfield.
Just got a 2018 Indian Springfield. MY god I love it. Supposedly they fixed the sump issue that was causing the motors to clack but the power on this sucker is insane. The low end torque will rip you off your bike.
I don't see much difference in the design compared to Harley. The plastic chain tensioner for the cam shaft will have to be replaced & is prone to wear & tear. Why can't they come out with a better design? Too much money to be made for repair shops?
Forged crank, plain bearings on con rod big ends, gear primary drive, shared oil for engine, primary and gearbox. Very different from HD built up pressed crank, roller big end Siamesed rods, chain primary. Dual chains on the twin cam now back to single on the M8.
My 111 is very noisy. It sounds like it is starving for oil at about 2,000 rpms. The factory will not allow the dealer to investigate. That really sucks!! The motor also falls on its face over 4,500 rpms. Not everyone rides below 3000 rpms at all times. The fly by wire throttle also sucks. Lots of lag. Polaris needs to come off their high horse and listen to customers.
Get back to me after you own a Boss Hoss with 500 hp and several race bikes that your race with every month. Then you will know more about torque, HP and what a real power band is all about.
ZeebNinja Normal production bikes. Who gives a shit about race bikes? I don't, b/c I'm not an immature d-bag w/ a Napoleon Complex. I've owned and ridden more *production bikes* than your whole family, dead or alive. This is a production bike, and the engine is nonpareil in its class.
+ZeebNinja Aren't you comparing oranges and apples. It appears that Anonymous called you out correctly. Fly by wire throttle sucks? Because having fly by wire on your motorcycle (which is throttle control on the latest jet fighter craft) really doesn't give precise fuel control or power. lol
ZeebNinja 20 years ago (when I knew a lot less than I know now) I'd take my Kawasaki ZX-10 up to 160 m.p.h. on open American highways some Sunday mornings. I rode my Suzuki GSX-R1100 even faster than that: frequently at 170 m.p.h. on the Autobahn between Augsburg and Munich. I later realized 3 things: (1) I didn't trust the abilities of other drivers, namely the "cagers" in their cars with their phones and distractions; (2) I had way too many reasons to live; and (3) my *real* enjoyment came from just being on a bike, *not* from going Mach II with my hair on fire. Long live the cruisers. I like any bikes, even your superbikes. What I don't like is people spreading bullshit about a well-engineered, great performing American engine like the ThunderStroke 111. Be safe out there, kid! Cheers! ;-)
Big cubic inch air cooled format will overheat in the summer time before first 5000 miles. Add to that low rpm lugging in 6th gear.......be ready for those warranty issues.
I purchased a new 2017 Roadmaster back in March of 2017, and I put 9000 miles on this season. I haven't had any problems with over heating or anything else for that matter, in one of my trips last season I rode from Dearborn Michigan ,straight home to Boston in 17hours, I love my Indian and looking forward to this season's ride to California n Phoenix Arizona from Boston.
i went on a test drive and i love it im a big man i was so comfortable my friends ride harleys but i like thise one . i dont have to do anything to it im thinking about geting one some day soon ? i hope people you should go on a test ride its nice.
Boy Polaris needs to change their script. This is the same thing they did with Victory except without the originality. Introducing a new bike puts flash on it with a big rim in the front and walk away from it. Shame it looks like a Harley clone with a lot less horsepower. At least the Victory Brand was different. You could tell it wasn’t a Harley.
I own both but I'm the stupid one. The 111 is nothing like anything Victory made. The Victory Octane and Indian Scout are very similar. Probably shouldn't argue with someone that owns several of both brands
When he say's it's got a 3 gear cam shaft design he means that it is a gear driven cam not a chain drive. My 1976 Triumph Bonneville also has the gear driven cam and they do not go out of spec like a chain drive. But it is not a new concept , I think it was done in the 1930's and onward.
Oh, wait. The Indian is using a chain in the cam drive. The chain drives the center gear which in turn drives the intake and exhaust valves. Not as good as my Triumph which is only direct gear driven, no chain drive in the cam system. However the Indian uses hydraulic lifters for the valves which means no maintenance, no valve adjustments ever. That's good on a touring bike. Harley-Davidson's also use hydraulic lifters as do most car's.
for the price of a sportster or scout you can get twice the engine from triumph; it want a bike for performance and are not interested in all of the useless high tech look at the rocket 3 roadster from Triumph
@Volcanic Brown Triumph moved to Thailand to reduce costs and also that location provides better distro of their bikes to other markets outside of the US. Same thing Harley has done; bike sales are down for everybody even HD has mentioned 70 percent of the dealerships will not see new bikes this year. Triumph must do necessary measures to reduce operating expenses especially in times such as these- the made in England sticker comes with a price delta that is not sustainable; your friends are naive to think otherwise. Lastly, there will still be production of motorcycles in Hinckley-6-7k bikes built were at that facility of the 65k made last year. The UK facility will be their research and development Hub- Triumph as company is in good shape compared to its competitors much stronger than Indian and gaining YOY on harley davidson
I love my Scout. When I pay it off, I want to add the new Chief. LOVE what Indian is doing!

I own a springfield also and couldn't be happier, I absolutely love the bike, it's an Indian, not a harley.
I took a chance and bought a 2016 Indian Scout 60. I love the bike!!! I hope Polaris keeps this fantastic bike going!!
If Polaris would upsize the Scout to a touring frame it would sell like crazy.
I have a 2017 Indian Chieftain limited and love it.

I want that in my living room! Badass.
I love my new 2014 Indian.
Still have it?? I'm torn between an Indian and a HD
Is that plastic cam chain tensioners like on Harleys ?
In just one word : Beautiful.
I own an Gilroy era bike. It's a dope first bike
Harley Davidson will have a gear driven clutch basket in probably another 15 years
how many gaskets on it. the victory has less than half as many as the harley.
8 vs 63
i wonder how indians cam chain tentioner holds up ?
wear item just like the Harley twin cam was.....just needs an inspection every 10 k or so....easy to do.
Absolutely terrific !
BAD ASS ENGINE !!!!

what's the rated horsepower for the new engine ?

Yep, and you get goosebumps when you can go from 30 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds

They're proving to be a great new American Motorcycle.
Ok for the engine! The body!!!
GO INDIAN GO

they say it has an internal oil cooler, and yea everyone is excited cuz its new but time will tell. I'm not gonna get too sold on it yet!!!
It's been 3 years and I haven't heard anyone over heat their motor or have engine heat cause the motor to fail
Jim Jimmy the foolishness is strong in you
Jim Jimmy that is bull its also oil cooled

3 cams you say? that's a little goofy.
why do you say goofy?? Just an uneducated guess, but It might even prove to be a better design than a twinscam... you know what I'm sayin???
+creamyfilling102 Twin cams are old news
my sportster has 4 cams in it
Still has a cam chain
Only 2 valves per cylinder
love it
WOW !!
37 dislikes from die hard harley fans.
Ya Ya Ya! Now everyone is an expert on Indian motorcycles. To this day I will not park my Indian Chief with Harley people.
Harleys rule!!!
elson Jacks victory is the new american ruler harleys are old news !!
Troll
elson Jacks if Harley's rule, what you doing here.
Yes they do!
looks like a cheap plastic cam chain tensioner like the milwukee Harley engines
Hence why I have 140k miles on my Evo, no tensioners on my engine
Yep, they don't like rays. Those evil animals just swimming around in the ocean stinging people.
