My wife's on an Indian Scout. I asked the salesman why it didn't have a gas gauge to which he replied "Indian is trying to keep the bike nostalgic." I was met with a blank stare when I asked "then why does it have a USB port and LED lights?"

Usb port is pretty hidden isn’t it? I’d still take the led light 😂. I do like the look of the speedometer on mine.
Don't worry, I asked the same thing for my sportster. The dealer told me that I'd know when I'm out of gas. Not even 1 month into owning it I got stranded. I learned up on my riding habits and the fuel mileage and from then on, it was never an issue.
Moral of the story, It's probably the test of temperament that combats convenience. Dealerships also seem to think so too since that's how it's always been.
I top my Scout off every 100 miles or so. I have pushed my top off to 130 and still have just under half gallon in the tank when I do. Use the trip meter.
As I have always said, Harley is 119 years of tradition, unhampered by progress.
Weird comment after Harley released a new liquid cooled engine that outperforms Polaris' offering across the entire rev range by a significant margin with similar displacement (~10HP at most ranges, only narrowing between 7500-8000RPM) for the Sportster S vs FTR S.
@@caffynated552 This is the first I'm hearing of this, but I do want to say that if they've just released it, then we'll have to wait to see how well it sells, & consequentially, how long they continue to produce it. It certainly wouldn't be the first time Harley released a brilliant, innovative new machine only for it to flop at market because their target audience won't touch anything new, & younger riders are hung up on Harley's own bad reputation.
@@SeraphimCramer I would assume the Pan-America (motorcyle of the year 2021) and Sportster S (they have stopped production of the normal Sportster line) are here to stay. We'll see about the Nightster as it wasn't as well received.

I always loved the way the scout looked, but this review teaching me about how it worked was the biggest driver behind me wanting a scout more than anything and ultimately buying one. Its been a super enjoyable ride

This is the best explanation of the benefits and downsides of undersquare vs oversquare ive ever seen. Ive always loved indian for their willingness to do what Harley refuses to because "tradition"
Harley is simply doin what its buyers want, thats all. They brought out the v rod, wasn't exactly a huge success and I predict the same for these new liquid cooled sportsters. Harley brought a great performer in the 2009-12 (usa production years) XR1200, it handled, it stopped and had plenty of power. Harley guys hated em lol

So glad you mentioned Victory in your presentation! My first serious bike was a Victory and I'll never let go of it. On the flip side, I never actually recognized Harley Davidson's nostalgia factor until I started riding. As I discovered the rider subculture for myself, I noticed real quick that everyone riding a relatively older Harley had something I didn't despite their idiosyncrasies. I just couldn't quite identify or articulate what it was...
I think that this isn't right. You get this feeling with every Chopper or Bobber. Doesn't care which brand. HD is just WAAAAY to overpriced for nothin,

Ive always wanted a Harley since I was little, I'm 45 and I still want at least 1. Started riding in 2012, on an xv250 (absolute ripper of a little bike, I still missi it), 2014 I bought my first big bike, I got my harley... except its japanese. I've even had 2 HD riders think it was one. My Yamaharley Bolt is absolutely perfect for me.

I don't even have my motorcycle license let alone own a bike and I've watched almost every one of your videos. That shows how good they are. If you can captivate someone who doesn't even know how to ride a motorcycle to watch all your helmet reviews, then its got to be good.
Motorcycle license? In my country(Philippines) we only have drivers license that will allow you to drive either a car, motorcyle or a truck

It's award enough that people gush over every video, every time. This is 2021, seems everything in the USA demands a trophy, even for participating. Meh. It cheapens the actual folk who actually accomplish miles above everyone else. There will always be inequality; to believe otherwise demands everyone slump to the lowest common denominator. That would be lame. The overachievers make life better for everyone else.

I’ve never owned a street bike before, I saw this video for the first time about 7 months ago. Just got my 2022 scout bobber. I fell in love and I bought my bike because of this video.

I’ve watched this video so many times. It never ceases to impress. The sheer intelligence and clarity of vision, shared by all the team at fortnine is a sight to behold!
I have to second all the other comments here, that this channel is in a class of its own. I watch a lot of stuff on this platform. A lot of really high quality stuff. And this channel, for many reasons, always feels like the best content I've ever seen. The commentary, humor, cinematography, editing, subject matter, etc are always incredible. I appreciate all the work that goes into this. And as many have said, it's hard to believe that I can watch this for free.

That's where we need a compromise. I believe we'll find one. Yamaha and especially Kawasaki are well on their way. Although Kawasaki thinks people who want a sexy looking cafe racer also want detuned performance. Big mistake. I'll wait.
I think a big factor for the increased horsepower of an oversquare engine, (or, for that matter, using more cylinders) was missed. The bigger the bore, the more area you have for valves. The more area you have for valves, the more air you can take in. The more air you can take in, the more fuel you can burn. The more fuel you can burn, the more power you can get out of your engine.
So, after a few years of no motorcycle ownership, I retired and jumped back in. I initially started riding Yamaha twins in the 1970s - the kick ass and take names performance bikes of the time. Since then I've owned Yamaha inline triples, Honda inline twins, inline V-twins, Goldwing 4 pots and 6 pots, and landed recently, after retirement, with an Indian Scout 69. What a great machine. But, I had never owned a Harley anything. The noise and vibration just seemed to be nothing I would want. But, a few weeks ago I found a 2007 Harley Fatboy with low miles and a good sound, so I added it to the stable. After a few weeks of ownership I can now say I get it. Regardless of HP, the torque of this 96 C.I. motor is intoxicating. The Scout is fun 90% of the time. The Fatboy is more fun than than that. If you've never tried a Harley . . . you should.
not how an engine works, the discplacment is equal meaning each revolution at given rpm both bring in that amount of air. the main reason indian makes more power is from head design and flow. its all in the heads.

@@AndrewUnruh it would be "volume" of air pulled into the cylinders per revolution.Each full revolution of a given cc/ci engine displaces that amount or air so a harley 96ci/1584cc engine will displace or pull in and exhaust out 96ci/1584cc of air per complete revolution and as rpm increases the fast and more air that be moved its harleys biggest downfall is lack of head design as with most Dohc or Sohc simpler for better more efficient air flow. concept is same principle for auto engines as well.
also this all changes once you use a alt fuel/ nitro, meth, eth. or move towards boost because at that point you forcing more air into the combustion chamber than what it is designed for effectively increasing the dynamic compression ratio.

Hilarous.
Biggest mistake Harley did was killing Buell. It gave them a line that they could sink R&D in. And make modern, fun bikes. They didn't understand that attracting different buyers = MORE BUYERS.

Buell was a flop because it tops out at 112mph and is horrible to work on...
No one wanted them... because for a sportbike you need to go faster... and lose the weight... H-D failed to deliver, so the product went no where..
V-rods are awesome and would sell, if they didn't scare the hell out of 3/4 of the H-D buyers who are old men that couldn't handle them...
Like the same guy that keeps telling me to slow down on my SV650 coming down the road, when I am doing the speed limit... and I am older than he is...
He don't know what a bike is capable of, he's only had a H-D couch, and anything else he is terrified of... and because I wear full gear and tinted visor, he probably thinks I'm some kid and he's trying too be my dad... His H-D is always in his shed when I go by every day, putting 20,000 kms a season, and it's always there when I return at night...
Some people like to sit, shine and admire, my enjoyment comes from carving turns and seeing the country.
@@vtwinner what buell (XB and newer) topped out at 112? And the XB series wasn’t a proper sport bike per day (though the fire bolt was more simply because the riding position) but a naked. Which is what a lot of people want and like now a days. The buells pre 2003 I’m not really referring to as they were just too old.

@@jasons4950 You carry a scanner, throttle pos. sensor, map sensor, O2 sensor, knock sensor, coolant temp sensor, oil press, sensor etc. and an extra ECM with you on long trips? My brother's bike cracked a temp sensor and smoked the computer, no fixing that on a roadside at night. I like all bikes, I inherited my dad's Aspencade, it's great but if it breaks down it's going home in a truck. My throttle cable craps out on my bike, and I can use a boot lace if need be, try that with ride by wire throttle. I can walk into most auto parts stores and get what I need for a fix, the only thing you'll get for a new bike in there is oil.

Just bought a 2018 Scout Bobber. Love the bike so far. Plenty of power, for me at least, and the accessories are not a limited as I first thought. You just have to look a little hardened to find them. The only diwn side is the the engine oil is 15w60 which is harder to find locally.
Just buy the oil online and do it yourself right?

@@vlc-cosplayer but what about marketing? regardless of whether or not companies want more profit or less they still have to market their products. If they want sales then decent marketing is key. Manufacturers should not look at videos like these as "art", as you so very crudely put it, rather they should see them as effective marketing (look at the view count) and invest accordingly.

They are comparing two totally different bikes. My SOFTAIL makes 50% more torque at half the revs. The bobber is much more comparable to a SOFTAIL in size and overall layout.

Holy SHIT! Then I saw "Harley Davidson" on the tire, and the understanding kicked in.
a lot of that can be for the tyre. I've had bare car wheels on balancers before to look for buckling, spun it to check for balance, and it was totally fine even though there was a slight (barely a few mm) wobble.... fit a tyre, fire the weights cannon

Or at least more of them. I appreciate that Fort 9's content is several cuts above most others but we need them more often! They are for the thinking motorcycle enthusiast....I can't fault them. Perhaps some more new or forgotten and underrated bike reviews? .......up to Ryan I suppose although I wouldn't want the quality to suffer because of quantity.

I started riding almost 4 years ago and you guys made me feel passionate and comfortable to start on 2 wheels. These documentary styled films are my favorite. Just wanted to say thank you to Ryan and everyone in FortNine
Yesterday was my fourth day riding, and my second day riding street bikes and I already find myself scraping my foot pegs and knocking my head against that narrow lean angle. The scout bobber is a GORGEOUS bike and super fun in a straight line but even as a total newbie I've already pushed it to its limit in cornering just on my commute.
Your videos are hands down the most informative and entertaining.
Well there's the Scout's ad campaign right there: "Indian, with 43% more power than a Harley... priced like a Sportster, but goes like a V-Rod!"
I knew me and HD were going crossways when I thought the V-Rod was the bomb, and everyone else thought it bombed. Never looked back.

@@theancienteternaloaktree its funny the harley engine i consider the most reliable was the one porsche helped with and die hard harley fans hated. Almost like reliability and actual power isn't in Harleys priority like selling cosplay outfits. 2 of my friends have Vrods (one of them has both vrod and night rod) and all 3 have over 60k on them with 0 issues, meanwhile my low rider has gone through a couple mechanic visits

Love the video, especially the witty way you deliver the how & why, and then about American bikers at the end, I both nod in approval and then laugh at the statement. I understand it well, being a fan of old car's, trucks and bikes styling and for the most part simplicity, but love modern reliability, like electronic ignitions, efi, and modern engine power outputs. Looks like I'll have to check out some of your other videos!

Primary reason for over square is to avoid excessive piston speed. The piston doesn’t outrun the combustion. It outruns the oilly good lubrication. It also gets knock on effects like more space for valves and less force on the crank from moving the piston so fast.
That comes at the expensive of low speed breathability, smoothness and secondary forces but most of all a combustion chamber which we want to be round.
The more surface touching the combustion those more area to lose heat through, the more difficult to get good mixing etc.
Your videos are so well done they're actually addictive to watch.

Yeah, the production quality is insane in your videos, but for me my favorite aspect of your channel is the physics behind motorcycles that you explain incredibly well. It's been a while since my engineering school days, and it's great to see the many concepts I learned applied to something as awesome as motorcycles.

The Indian Scout does a great job of bridging those two markets. Enough modern aspects, while still capturing the nostalgia.

Yeah, with respect to motorcycles, America is ALL nostalgia! I've never owned an American motorcycle, made two Triumph mistakes then ALL Asian. Can't afford a Ducati but they blow everything away.

American cars are in this category too. My old big block just, can't be found anywhere else other than america. Plain and simple.

Another great video. I love watching you, man. Very honest, direct input, lots of super info. Indian motorcycles are killing HD, day by day. I don't really care for that style, however I love the design, electronics, components and quality they put into the bikes. They are just sexier looking. I own a new Goldwing DCT Tour, but if I would shop for that style, Indian would be the go to....hands down. Good job, Indian. Keep rocking.
