I hate wasting plastic, so I've been working on a new (to me) technique to re-use my failed prints and 3D printing waste by melting it down and making something useful. This is how I do it, but if you know of a a better way, I'd love to hear about it!

I love so much how low budget this is
Even the gloves 💀
Maybe go around the rim with a saw, sandpaper, or some kind of shaving tool to make a clean edge
It's actually really hard to cut! (I tried)
I think the plastic tempers in a similar way to metal.
That bowl came out looking great!
Thanks!
That was really interesting. I think I will try it out. I have so much 3d printing waste.
I dunno if it exists, but a heated knife like thing (especially if it is like thoes plastering flatners) that would be great for detail work
I feel like I've seen soldering irons like that... Good idea!
I took my regular iron and a large washer with a small hole drilled in the tip with a screw and leave it a little loose you can seal bags and cut PLA I have seal vacuum lines on cars a lot of uses
I know its a year late but I just found this. This is FANTASTIC to do! I have started melting old filament into key chains , flowered hat pins and other things that I sell for $1.00 to $300 at our local fair. I then take that money and buy more Filament. its a recycle program that is awesome and saves so much on waste and actually pays for my 3D printing addiction
try throwing the scraps in silicone molds, ive been toying with that for awhile, never though tto use cooking oil as a mold release though, might try that nexct time.
Just tried it actually! Had a lot of trouble getting the bubbles out, dunno if it's worth it, but let me know how it goes if you try it!
Been there done that
😅 plastic fumes for life 🤣
weirdo stinky art stuff is 😅 when roommates aren’t home of course😎
dude your hilarious
👍
New idea: plastic scented candles?
I wanna try something like this!! ^^
Jesus. May be NOT use an oven used for food.
Pla is food safe
Hush
@@shinymagikarp1051 not when it's molten.
I really hope people do some more research before following this. Melting PLA in your personal oven is a horrible idea
Instead of putting it in an oven has anyone tried a cheap air frier?
Would this work?
A toaster over or panini press would work too
just dont use it for food. how about just making plastic bricks like boring co?
Squizitzi that’s Italian for yummy 😂
Squizitzi 😊
Gotta wonder if we could melt a huge hunk of PLA into a block, then lathe it into useful things.
it's been done with hdpe, why not!
this channel is gonna be huge one day ! keep it up !
Exactly what I was looking for! Easy, combined filament types, no special molds, and problems along the way, speed too. Loved your video :)
I wanted to make plates for under my gutter outlet water collect and diverters (? Actual name who knows) and around fence poles.. so grass doesn’t grow up around either of these things. I think I can use my filament waste for something like this! Even if the pla degrades over time.. no biggy, as I’m sure it’ll take awhile but serve the purpose all along., your video was exactly what I needed, and the parchment paper idea!! Woo hoo amazing 🎉🎉❤❤
I was wondering if it would be possible to make filament by first preparing 2 thick sheets of metal in a way that you machine grooves (1,75 diameter of course) on each scheet (so placing second sheet on first one would create long cylinders) and then melting on top of first sheet plastic and after that press from above using second sheet (excess plastic would flow out and rest would accumulate in groves). after cooling it would (hopefully) create filament sticks.
Great video. Your humor and presentation are fun! Keep it up!
Says he's not trying to brag and then busts out a second roll of wax paper. I only budgeted for 3D printing...I'm not an aristocrat!
Kidding aside, great video!

You could have just created a wall hanging out of that molten plastic
What about melting in a Pyrex rectangular 2" deep glass bowl?
I tried this, but had issues with the plastic melting inconsistency and dripping down the sides. If you have a second, slightly smaller bowl you may be able to make a kind of mold out of them to get the look you're going for.
Can you try to melt Pla and then use an ABS Negative cast to shape the result??
I want to try my own but ABS I have not much experience
It could be worth a shot! Just picked up some ABS!
@@Patrick_Gibney Sounds great hope you'll do that :)
what do you use the bowl for?
Squizitzi 😊
How about resin prints?
