The song is about the Baltic-Germans loosing their homeland (called Ostland or "Easternland" - because it was one of the biggest german eastern settlements)
"The best of us stayed" was poorly translated and meant that the best of them had fallen in battle whilst the survivors returned back to their ancestors homelands - that also explains the bit about becominh different from their german bretheren (from the west, the south and north [of germany])
The bit about the flag or "Banner" is representing their Culture, and the part about it pointing to the east means that their desire is to one day return to their lost homelands.
To a german native you can really hear their pain of loosing their homeland and their desire to return.
Its truly one of the saddest songs imo
Next should be Die Eisenfaust am Lanzenschaft, there is a nice video from Dr. Ludwig with video scenes!

Its a poem called "Die Baltenfahne" from Hans von Manteuffel-Szoege. He wrote it in 1920 but it was first published in the 1930s.
Please make a video for the song "Ich hatt' einen Kameraden" (I had a comrade). My grandfather always sang it at the grave of his best friend, who committed suicide in 1944 on home leave because he couldn't process what he had experienced.

Um... Are you aware that this is a nationalistic song, used by paramilitary units that fought in the civil conflict in the baltic region after WW1? This is not a harmless soldier song, it's literally a piece of right-wing propaganda, advocating for german dominance over the baltic peoples...
And you spread some leftist propaganda here. This song, just like Nachts steht Hunger, are about the Germans who kept fighting in the east to secure East Prussia and the eastern border as well as certain troups who fought along the White Army against the communists. The Baltics haven't been independant states back then, but were part of Russia.
