How a Burial Vault is Sealed

  • Burial vaults are required by many cemeteries across the central United States, where my company is based out of. The seal on the burial vault is a beauty al adhesive seal that lies in the groove of the lid that is installed before the manufacturing process. It is pressed into the liner, and then the vault is poured. The seal activates when the base is raised into the lid of the vault, dispersing the seal around the tongue of the base. When burial vaults are properly installed and manufactured, they are air and water tight. I've personally been involved in disinterments that date back from being buried in the nineteen sixties, and i've opened these vaults to reveal a dry intact casket.
The virality of preinstalled burial vaults has tarnished a reputation of burial themselves. Preinstalled burial vaults are not installed with the seal, When the lid is removed, water and debris are in the bottom of the vault.
Every Wilbert burial vault that we install is displayed above ground so that the ceiling process can be done where the entire seal on the lid and the entire base is visible to ensure proper fitment.

Butyl rubber adhesive seal is what is used to seal glass to automobile bodies. Such as windshields. It is very strong and durable. Leaks are normally due to the metal deterioration not the seal itself. Removing a windshield to replace it is tough work.

I remember setting one similar back in 2015, it was $17,000. Oversized vault lined with bronze and had a sheet bronze exterior.

I don’t know why these videos are showing up on my feed, but they’re extremely interesting. I learned a number of things that I never knew prior to seeing these videos.

Why would a wooden casket deteriorate if the vault is air & water tight?

Good question. I'm guessing the gases released from the body?

I have asked before, I have seen in one of your videos where you drilled holes in the bottom of the vault! Does water get into these vaults? They had a place in the bottom of this vault you showed that had tree individual places where holes would be but because water got in you finished the three holes. I wouldn’t want this to happen to mine.

I was told a embalmed body will last 10-15 years sealed in the vault!

If the embalming is done correctly, and everything goes smoothly, it can indeed last at least 10 years. After that a body will begin to mold, the skin will slough off due to the moisture content inside the casket, and the vault, and the body will begin to quickly deteriorate.
