  • Author Christopher Paolini answers another batch of questions on topics ranging from how to audition for the new Disney+ Eragon, to how to keep track of worldbuilding, to who would win if Arya and Nasuada were in a fight.
Visit Fractalverse.net and Paolini.net for more information on Christopher and his projects.
    00:00 Intro
00:25 Was there a particular character or scene that was your favorite to write about?
01:55 If Arya and Nasuada were in a fight (no magic, just swords), who would win?
03:06 Does Alagaësia exist in the Fractalverse? Or is that a completely separate universe?
03:14 Will you have an active role in casting the new Eragon Disney+ series? How would one go about auditioning?
04:16 If you could, where would you film the Eragon series for landscape?
05:03 Also, do you have anyone in mind to play Eragon and Murtagh in the series?
06:35 If everything goes will with the Disney+ Eragon show, will you consider making a video game?
07:08 Any change of a hardcover leather special edition set of the Inheritance Cycle?
07:34 Will the next series in Eragon’s world include any TSiaSoS references involving our favorite dimension/time hopping herbalist?
07:42 Can the Soft Blade merge with any living being?
08:58 When creating rules for your world, e.g. magic and stuff, what is your method of developing them?
11:38 How did you keep track of all your lore and worldbuilding while writing the Inheritance Cycle?
14:09 What was the most challenging thing about creating the ancient language?

Your laws of magic and reality in Inheritance are some of my favorite I've encountered. The strict rules combined with the nuance of actually casting makes getting it right mean something. And the outcome of getting it wrong is ever present with Elva.

I cried when I randomly found this interview today and realized you are in the works with Disney. I re read this series every year 3-4 times a year. When I first started reading this series I was 12 and I finished the first book in a day… and did the same with all the others as they were released throughout the years. It has seen me through so many stages of life. I can’t believe I’ve been fortunate enough to experience this series over and over again. Thank you so much for this gift, this escape, this comfort.

I think your sister would be rather irritated if her namesake character be left out. This does bring up a question if she had any input on the Sea of Stars version. Does your sister actually write the parts for Angela or do you transcribe them with some changes? Has your wife had any input on your writing during any time of your relationship? I know many authors use their family as the first editors. Have you created a character based off of your wife or anyone else in your family beyond your sister?
How many times do you have to go back over any notes or last several pages to refresh yourself after taking an extended break from writing to remember your characters and scenes?

I haven’t read To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars yet, but the title alone has me making a fan theory.
My little fan theory is that an Eldunarí got so lonely that it split its consciousness into tiny pieces and ended up making a tiny universe within itself so that it wasn’t lonely anymore.

One of the niche things that was included in early editions of both The Hobbit, as well as Artemus Fowl was along the top was written in Runes or pictographs that told seperate information than read in the book. Artemus fowl had "prophecy" and The Hobbit I believe had backstory, or lore. Somewhere in the book would be the key, or at least enough of a key you could decipher the runes... It could be a neat idea for any Leather bound or collecter sets your planning for the future.

(I'm Scottish but can do a reasonable general American accent, I've never acted before but have been interested in getting into it for a while now and I'd love to play someone like Katrina - I'm mid-twenties but definitely look a lot younger, people often think I'm still in high school, I could pass for 16ish - or a smaller background character).

I'm interested if you are familiar with Eliezer Yudkowsky's Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality? I would for sure have said that it had influence of Inheritance's magic style IF Eragon was not written earlier than this book :) For me the magic is similar to the one from this book, and it seems very rational, like it's not something 'happened' and boom, it's just magic. In Inheritance every piece of magic is really well explained, and it is clear of what a particular character is or is not capable of doing, and often they come up with some really creative decisions that a logic and intelligence researcher like Yudkowsky would appreciate.

very excited about the upcoming series. Just hoping disney doesnt ruin it by trying to change the story or going woke with it. Go woke go broke. Change nothing and it will be the next game of thrones as far as success.

Is there any real, hard limit to magic beyond the creativity of the user and their available energy stores?

I don't know if you are locked in with Disney but there is a group called Angel studios that you might look into for Aragon producing it, I think that would be a better option. If you are already set in stone with Disney then I guess it's too late maybe but I hope that whoever does it does it justice and follow the book fairly close and keeps out any bad agenda the world has been pushing and is no cussing. Love the Eragon books so much read them all several times.

So true. It is sad to the direction Disney has taken. The only hope we have is that the sheer pressure on Disney will keep them in line with the book. By the way, I like the name!

There was a reason why Thorn and Saphira did not mate. Admittedly it was while Thorn and Murtagh was name slaves still but even after they were released, I doubt Saphira would connect to Thorn in that way.
