+alexandra rivera I have worn them both on halloween and could see fine, and wore the borderlands one to comic-con, and was fine there too. Just be sure not to kill your night vision by exposing your eyes to the yellow light.
Ohaple, can you tell me how my night vision would be affected in this situation? Making an Iron Man helmet, and I'd like to use the light up bracelet method you mentioned above, only in BLUE. If I wore a pair of sunglasses in front of the blue light inside of the helmet, would that protect my eyes? There's already a pair of sunglasses to give the eyes a glossy look, but if I actually wore a second pair to protect myself from the immediate blue centimeters from my face, would it be safe (or at least okay-ish)?
You wouldnt need sunglasses, but instead would need lenses that cut out blue light only (like red lenses). You could always sharpie some protective glasses blue, use use lenses from 3D glasses to get the effect.
out of curiosity would you be willing to let me pay you to make a few of these for me? my friends are going to EDC in NYC not too long from now and I don't really have all the time in the world to make this the way I want it. Let me know thanks
I'm watching your videos now because I need to make a project for a class in college, I have 2 things to say.. 1. Well explained videos, love them. 2. Love you, you gave me lots of ideas
you know if you put the lights above the eyes facing down and put some clear reflective material at an angle over the eyes you can have the same effect without the blindness. the light shines down onto the material out the eye holes but the material is clear so you can still see.
Awesome tutorial, dude! I'm gonna use it to create a glow from the filter in front of my mouth on my quarian cosplay mask from Mass Effect, but I'm definitely gonna use it for eyes sometime as well! This really helped a lot
I'm either going to use acrylic sheets (thick of course) or acetate sheets. Maybe I'll need to dye them, but colored ones are available as well, so I think I'll experiment a bit to see what's best. Either way, it -is- quite a complicated mask to make.
Hey there ahaple. just made these for my son using method three but used a chin switch. he opens his mouth and activates the pressure switch. the costume is he Marionette from Five Nights at Freddy's. The best part is the activation. Wait till you have their attention and then boom! light up their brains!. Still haven't figured out how to defeat night blindness though. Maybe some kind of light deflector between the lights and his eyes. I tried making him wear polarized sunglasses but it doesn't make any difference. Fantastic how-to video! Brought back some soldering skills I haven't used for a while. Thanks for posting! :)
Depending on what mask you want, you could make the mask longer and put them in front of your forehead and paint screens the same as the mask so it doesn't mess up any vision.
If you do not use the lenses, you will just have a randome led floating in front of your face, which will need to actually poke out of the eye hole to prevent the light hitting your eyes. It isnt needed for the style of the white eyes, but it is needed to make the white spotlight eyes look good.
HUGE Thx Ohaple im a guy that loves doing all sorts of masks but have none elactric experiance at all so this was a huge help for me :D have been woundering how to install lamps in the mask :) hadent find any good tutorial intill now :) have a great day man !
This has been incredibly helpful man! I'm working on a Kold War Scorpion mask and am trying to get the glowing orange effect like in the game. I plan on taking orange sunglass or safety lens's, gluing them to the eyes I have cut out, then taking two booklights like you suggested and fitting them in the corners of the mask. I am hoping that this will provide the effect that I am looking for.
I would really love to attempt the third method of wiring leds to a mask. However, within this video my biggest struggle was understanding the wiring. Which wires are positive or negative? Comparing the line diagram to the actual wiring in the mask has me completely lost. I just want a step by step better understanding of how To correctly wire the battery, switch, and potentiometer to to power the LEDs. Help from anyone in the comments is greatly appreciated as well.
Great tutorial, I like the safety warnings, I haven't read all the comments, but the most important safety caution you left out is the fact that bright LEDs are low grade lasers and can permanently damage vision.
I would use something like the red lights in this video, then use a lens that will diffuse the light. You can always use sheets of plastic or even soda bottles to make custom lenses.
Im guessing you mean the actual light part? You can make them any size, just use a different flashlight reflector. You could try painting part of the reflector black to make a star or pill shape. I would be careful getting too big though, as it will take up more of your vision
Thank you so much for this! I am making a mask in my art class and decided to be the cool one ^^ Also.....I have a problem.....I am stuck between 2 masks......The borderlands one........And ...........Wait no.....I like the borderlands one XD Update: I became a cosplayer and I didnt make it for art class and i no longer use "XD" its been 2 years but ive learned.
I'm new to mask lights, cosplay stuff like that but your good at this! I mean I'm just trying how to put in wire so it'll light up. but still I may make this mask over the TOP cool! Thank You!
Yep. If it is a helmet and the lenses will be an inch or two from your eyes, you should be ok, on mine, I made it so the reflectors graze my eyelashes, so any bigger becomes a problem lol. Be sure to send me pics to @ohaple on twitter, would love to see what you are doing.
I have a tip to add for easy wiring to LEDs: Get one of those dollar store bracelets that light up, open it up and take the chip/LEDs out, de-solder the LEDs, get 2 copper wires per side, solder the wires to the board on one end where the LEDs were, and solder the wires to the LED on the other end. No need to increase power, they work great! You can even put everything back in the housing and still use the same switch! Much simpler and faster than creating from scratch!
He pressed it several times for different blinking modes. I noticed that on the red bracelet method, in case you were wondering which one I was explaining here.
Might want to update this, new research by US military suggests that Blue is actually the best for night vision; followed by Green then Red. they're already adopting it on NVGs, lasers on PEQ boxes, and other attachments
Watch tutorials on soldering if you aren't familiar with it. Also, make sure that you don't drive too much power to the LED's, but make sure to give yourself plenty of batteries so that you can leave it on for hours at a time.
Any tips on making sure the wires stay in place/or where the buttons should go so I can turn them on easily? I'm just worried about something going wrong while I'm out and don't have any tools to fix it... I'd like to be able to have it finished by Comic con in Seattle but who knows
rawrikat3 Hot glue is great for keeping wires and stuff in place. I like putting stuff in the cheeks since it is usually out of the way. I used 2 bright white 5mm leds, an spst micro toggle switch, a 10k ohm micro potentiometer, and a AAA battery holder. If you go into hd mode and then make the video large or fullscreen you should be able to read part numbers easily.
This is awesome! I was maybe thinking of doing something like this with a gas mask, that had the eye pieces and everything. Do you think this would work well with the goggle part of that sort of mask?
Would there be anyway to change the shape of the eyes? I had been trying to find a way to make a SK helmet, and keep the glowing eyes and your method would work wonderfully. But would there be a way of making the radius bigger if needed? Or do silly things like make star or pill shaped eyes?
I'm trying to make an Alphonse Elric cosplay from Fullmetal Alchemist, and I'd like his eyes to light up like they do in the anime. This is pretty much what I was looking for; Thanks!
They do not get in the way any more than the book lamp method. Functionally, they work and look the same, the only difference is changing batteries and turning it off and on is much more difficult. Plus you can really customize the LEDs if you do the soldering way
Even without using any resistance, they do not burn out, but it will significantly shorten your battery life, and will increase led failure, yet wont give much more brightness. The addition of a regulator is certainly a more professional way to go though. Good suggestion
I'm doing a batman helmet and if I do the first method with mesh eyes would it work just as fine ? Like bright up like a normal one look I'm trying to make it wearable so that method works but would it with mesh ?
Glad they worked out! Mine have cracked a tiny bit, but a little paint and a brush (with white glue if needed) can fix it up quickly. I would love if you would send me pics via twitter. :)
Thanks for the help in this video but i was wondering i made a robotic eye with some Window tinting to cover the end will leds work just as well for tint as it does for lenses???
For the LED bracelet, is there a way to attach a wire to the power button that you can run down your arm and into a glove, in order to power on/off by hand?
Im trying to make a Plague Doctor outfit for next year Halloween and I bought a black metallic plague doctor mask from a Halloween store so im new to this whole led thing and im looking for a dim crimson red light for my eyes.
This is so helpful! Thank you for the tutorial!!
"It kinda freaks kids out, it's fun." Classy man we have here.
PURPLE GUY CONFIRMED?!?!?
Yep. The electronics store in my town has a dozen or so colors. I wanted blue or white, but when with white since it turns out a bit brighter
+alexandra rivera I have worn them both on halloween and could see fine, and wore the borderlands one to comic-con, and was fine there too. Just be sure not to kill your night vision by exposing your eyes to the yellow light.

This will definitely help me a lot. My sis and I are doing a Sans and Papyrus cosplay this January, and I really wanted glowy eyes :)

I used your LED light idea on my animotion mask and it turned out great - the only issue was keeping the push button attached. Thanks for the tips!
Im happy so many of you awesome vsauce fans made it over here!
Genius! thank-you!!!! This will be great for Steampunk cosplay! the shoelace idea is great too!

Book lamp! Great idea! I'm working on a project of making a scary doll puppet and I needed the eyes to light up. This really helped!
I will try this for Halloween because I'm going to be a black ops 2 origins map zombie with orange eyes
omg! thank you so much! I needed a good option for RED in a mask and this will be perfect! thank you! thank you! thank you!
I'm going to try to do Wybie's mask from Coraline so I'll probably do any of these methods :3

This was very helpful, im gona try the second method for a start lord mask i should have it done before Halloween
Nice! I thought about him for this year's mask, but it looked like more than I want to tackle. Hope it turns out well
@ohaple, I have a mask with a mesh screen on the eyes, would the first method work or what would you suggest?
by wearing reflective sunglasses under the mask first method give a nice effect
that borderlands mask is sick. I want one now
he shows you how to make one
Is their a way to have a wire that goes down your sleeve so I can turn it on with my hand?
Do the third one Nightvision ?

Definitely gonna try to use this for my transformers knock out costume for next year’s Halloween
This was helpful video as I’m doing a custom “redhood meets purge” concept for my Halloween costume this year dope thanks man
How do you keep the first method from blinking?
the bracelet has different modes the first is flashing the second is solid
+big
He pressed it several times for different blinking modes. I noticed that on the red bracelet method, in case you were wondering which one I was explaining here.
Does it have to be that specific bracelet or can it be a different brand
Thanks mate!!
I'm trying to make one that switches from white to red how would I do that?
Might want to update this, new research by US military suggests that Blue is actually the best for night vision; followed by Green then Red. they're already adopting it on NVGs, lasers on PEQ boxes, and other attachments
Have any tips for a first timer? I'm doing a TV head cosplay and I want to make a little face using LED lights (a .__. face)

can you explain to me why the lenses are necessary on the LED white lights?
This was incredibly informative thank you. Will any of the methods help add orange LEDS to a wool federal hat? I want the two indents to glow.
This is awesome! I was maybe thinking of doing something like this with a gas mask, that had the eye pieces and everything. Do you think this would work well with the goggle part of that sort of mask?
with the first method is it possible to put it in front of a see through cloth? will it give a better effect while also keeping the ability to see?
i like the borderlands mask because you could look at somebody then turn the light on then run at them
Would there be anyway to change the shape of the eyes?
I had been trying to find a way to make a SK helmet, and keep the glowing eyes and your method would work wonderfully. But would there be a way of making the radius bigger if needed? Or do silly things like make star or pill shaped eyes?

This is my favorite video from you cause this mask is from my favorite video game tales from the border lands
They do not get in the way any more than the book lamp method. Functionally, they work and look the same, the only difference is changing batteries and turning it off and on is much more difficult. Plus you can really customize the LEDs if you do the soldering way
If you go to liquidemotions website you can buy different colored led bulbs and you can fix it to the mask with you own batterie system.
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
could you tell me more about the led reflectors? Look like there's a socket for the LED? thx. jackie
Tanks for the video, how did you get the bracelet LED's to stop blinking?
If you hook up a voltage regulator you even can`t burn those LEDs out. It is a small piece with some coloured belts around it.
Even without using any resistance, they do not burn out, but it will significantly shorten your battery life, and will increase led failure, yet wont give much more brightness. The addition of a regulator is certainly a more professional way to go though. Good suggestion
Does the bracelet work as well as the shoe lace thing?
I'm doing a batman helmet and if I do the first method with mesh eyes would it work just as fine ? Like bright up like a normal one look I'm trying to make it wearable so that method works but would it with mesh ?
Thanks for the info. I'll be recommending your channel for sure.
The videos you've posters helped me out a lot but I've made two masks and the have both cracked but I'd still like to send you pictures of them
Glad they worked out! Mine have cracked a tiny bit, but a little paint and a brush (with white glue if needed) can fix it up quickly. I would love if you would send me pics via twitter. :)
is it possible to use the first method with black mesh covering the eyes? i want to use a cheaper option but i dont want people to see my eyes
For the second method with the book lamps do you put the lens on the outside of the mask or on the inside and can I just use lens from shades?
When you have the solder one do the leds get in the way?
Thanks for the help in this video but i was wondering i made a robotic eye with some Window tinting to cover the end will leds work just as well for tint as it does for lenses???
It should still work fine
hey can you use a AAA battery holder instead of the AA battery holder?
where did you get those book lamps? which ones did you used?
Could you do the third method on a paint ball mask or a pair of sunglasses?
Would te third method work with a mask thay uses mesh eye holes instead of sunglass lenses?
Great tutorial!
what if i have mesh eyes?
So is the micro potentiometer required?
“It kinda freaks little kids out, it’s fun!” 😂😂
Tysm for this I'm making a reverse flash mask dino and I was looking for red for his evil red eyes
is there anyway I could use a yellow led with the the last two? So no lenses could help with them???
I have a question I have a Cosplay coming up and I need yellow glowing lights my question is when you have the lights on are you able to see somewhat?
Ally R yup
For the LED bracelet, is there a way to attach a wire to the power button that you can run down your arm and into a glove, in order to power on/off by hand?
Not for the "easy" bracelet method. If you follow the more advanced method, it has everything you need, just make the wire a bit longer.
can u get the light up brackets online? cant find this certain one?
Im trying to make a Plague Doctor outfit for next year Halloween and I bought a black metallic plague doctor mask from a Halloween store so im new to this whole led thing and im looking for a dim crimson red light for my eyes.
thank you so much for your advice and video! it was very well done!
Would it work if I used the first method with lenses
im looking to do a reverse flash cosplay soon and this helped me figure out how to get his glowing red eyes
Will the first (easy) method work for a cyclops visor? Just for a simple glowing effect so it looks like the visor is "blasting"?
Love the tutorial! Is there any way to stop the flashing of the lights in the first method?
Where can I get tiny lights like the ones used on the second method
Yes, that is what I meant. Sorry I had asked that so oddly.
And wonderful :D
Now the fun part for finding the right size without killing sight D:
Doesn't the light hurt the eyes though?
Since the lights are pointing outward, I wouldn't think they'd hurt your eyes unless maybe the lights in the back heat up.
