I've got some experience with making glowing eye masks (as my profile pic might reveal). I've got a small tip for your design: try spraypainting the acrylic discs opaque black on the backside. This way the light from the LED's will be directed straight forward and you wont have light bleeding out the back, reducing visibility. It should give you even more visibility than from the black face cloth alone.
This is SOOOOOO much better that another guy's tutorial. He just gave the basic names of the parts, no detailed voltage or anything, showed the schematic on how they should look, and showed the end result. Nothing else. And what's even better is that you even give links to the parts so we don't have to search.
Hey Bill, I just wanted to say how much I love your videos. You seem like a great guy and you explain your process so well every time. These videos never fail to cheer me up. Keep up the great work!
With a con looming and a costume not complete I wish I could add some of the stuff you show on this channel. Post con I am doing so with guidance from your book. I'll even be spreading your name around where ever I go from now on, you guys are the best
This is RAD! THanks for the awesome tutorial, as always! One suggestion/tip: Blue LED lights will tend to blind you, especially more at night. To see just a tad better, maybe add some foil tape to the backs! This will help reflect the light out and lessen the light flashing back in your eye balls! :)
Hello, I love your way you put the eyes the mask! Question about the vynil used, the link you provide bring us to many different type of vynil. Which one did you use??? Thx
I was recently thrust into this world of cosplaying- with no prior knowledge... you are my savior! and the shortest time between seeing a video and subscribing.
***** I do have one question--since I've got your attention somewhat--will any two part epoxy work? Or do some have a similar effect to acetone and Styrofoam?
Dude, your builds are amazing!!! Thank you so much for sharing these amazing techniques. You are the godfather of so many great props I'm sure. Thanks again for sharing your mad skills & good luck with all your future builds. I look forward to seeing what awesome stuff you come up with next.
Thanks so much for continually providing fantastic content on your channel. It is by far one of my favorites and your Skyrim shield coasters are one of the things that got me into making things!
if you have some problem with the LEDs shining into your eyes you can just stick a bit of electrical tape behind the plastic. very thin yet effective at keeping lights out
I literally thought I was going crazy watching this video. I felt like I had always just missed an annotation or something right between the horns while you were talking. Went back and stayed focused. THE PICTURE CHANGED! >.
I would think (just a thought) if you put some black tape on the back of the blue discs it would cut down on any light coming back into your eyes. That should improve visibility for the wearer?
Bill, I've been looking for a source of surface mount LED's for a project so thank you for that information. Do those LED's get hot when left on for a long time?
Hi Bill, I have my amazon cart all set up. The only thing I'm missing is how you rigged the setup to batteries... I see you have the alligator clips biting into a little black box... can we get some links for whats necessary in that regard?
They are not for sale, no. But we do have a whole series that teaches you to build Skyrim Steel armor! ruclips.net/p/PL6q0fd3ileWLNxx9aWV5DEwNnaiKzaL4x
Hello thank you for the video. Question, is there an alternative for the acrylic eyes? I don't have a saw to cut the acrylic out with. Or can I cut the acrylic with anything else? Maybe a drill with a circular drill bit? thought about maybe using a piece of translucent colored divider for binders and jimmyrig something as eyes. Being I could easily cut that out with scissors... but would that type of plastic melt with the LEDs?
Hi I've been making helmets out of cardboard and i want to make them light up, but I've never used a soldering iron. Could you help me? i made this Arkham knight helmet out of card board and I adjusted it to have spaces for light to shine through, but I'm not to sure on where to install them so they won't be in my way. Could you help
I want to do something like this for my mask, but unlike your mask, my eyes are pretty much at the right spot which will render me blind if i do this. any suggestions on how to accomplish something simmilar?
I could really use a circuit diagram for the lights. If you have one, please send it my way! Edit: Also, am I right to assume that you used one closed circuit for each eye instead of splitting one circuit for both?
Ok so I am officially lost and confused. For the power switch is it one black and one red, or both red, or both black? I have seen videos on youtube with different connections and their lights are still working and light up and everything. Now I am just confused on which way is correct. : S Can anybody help please?
+Bill Doran Thank you! I'm also curious as to your preference with using the warm white LED as oppose to the cool or the pure white light - is there any particular reason or artistic preference behind it?
I tried my hand at soldering leads to LEDs, that were approximately 1/16th of an inch long by 1/32nd of an inch wide, using a cheap Walmart soldering iron. The LEDs were so small that you could lose one on a workbench when the d*mned thing was right in front of you. I unwound the motor winding from a tiny electric motor and used the wire for my leads. That wire was close in diameter as a very thin human hair. I had to place everything under a large 6-inch magnifying glass just to find and identify the soldering points. I was all ready to start until I moved the soldering iron into view, under the mag-glass and next to the LED. I thought then that there was no way in h*ll this would work. Even after filing the soldering iron tip to a fine point, when next to the LED the tip looked like a big wooden power line pole next to a 10-inch flat screen TV. But I worked with it for a while and, after cooking a few to death, eventually was successful. One down and only 119 more to go. After 20-30 successful connections, I got pretty good at it, and much faster. Though I did it then, I wouldn't do it again without a soldering iron meant for miniature work.
They created the rough shape with craft foam and then filled it with expanding foam. After it had dried, they removed the craft foam and wrapped the entire thing with worbla stripes. I used that technique too, and it turned out great ;) A more detailed explanation is on their homepage.

Why the hell aren't you more popular?!? You and your wife are the best craftsmen and you can make the best costumes
+YourNameHere I totally agree. Be sure to help out by liking and sharing.

I'll be doing glowing eyes so this will be cool to use. Only mine are gonna be red but also undead. Looks great can't wait to try it.
Bill, you're a legend. Thanks for Foamsmith, great read.
I literally thought I was going crazy watching this video. I felt like I had always just missed an annotation or something right between the horns while you were talking. Went back and stayed focused. THE PICTURE CHANGED! >.
It's videos like this that make me wish Punished Props was more notable. You guys should get a larger booth at a con, you have plenty to show off.
+Bill Doran Could we get you guys to come to RTX 2016 or 2017? Meg Turney hosted a cosplay panel this year and referenced you!

i just found you yesterday, you two are awesome
You're welcome! :)
Bill, I've been looking for a source of surface mount LED's for a project so thank you for that information. Do those LED's get hot when left on for a long time?
Sweet! Thanks again!
Thank you so much , now i can add some led in my space marines helmet , and my futur death knight helmet !
i always wonder how you make the skull and I never thought it was a Halloween mask
Hi Bill, I have my amazon cart all set up. The only thing I'm missing is how you rigged the setup to batteries... I see you have the alligator clips biting into a little black box... can we get some links for whats necessary in that regard?
+Bill Doran so a battery holder is what I'm missing? Thanks alot
Are the templates for the full draugr armor for sale? Or are they in your book? Either say I'd love to buy them :)
They are not for sale, no. But we do have a whole series that teaches you to build Skyrim Steel armor! ruclips.net/p/PL6q0fd3ileWLNxx9aWV5DEwNnaiKzaL4x

I'm not sure if any of those solutions will work as well. You're going to have to just give it a try and experiment with what you have.

Thanks for this using it for my alphonse elric helmet!
Hello, did you make the actual Draugr mask? Is there a tutorial for it at all? Thanks
your ebook shows how to make the horns for the kyrim Draugr Deathlord helmet?
Can you do a template on the helmet I don’t know how to use pepakura
Do a Superman one
Tu trabajo es muy cool
You could make the back of the "eyes" black to prevent light from bouncing back into your eyes. Probably a bit of cardboard or whatever would do.
Hi. The link for the black cloth is not a good link. What is the name of the fabric that you used to from Joann's? Thank you
It's a sheer black cloth.
Is there any danger with the battery being inside the mask with it burning your face if the lights are on for a long period of time?
+Ashley Beadle Not with these batteries. LiPo batteries are a different story.
Any advice how to for people not doing welding basicaly
So, if i want put 6 SMD LED on my armor, i dont need any resistor ?
Just put the 6 LED in serie, and use 2x AAA batterie ? :D
This video is amazing! Thank you for this. I love the posing and expressions by the way haha :D
did that opening that was awesome. I was laughing my ass off and now I'm going to enjoy the video.
I want to do something like this for my mask, but unlike your mask, my eyes are pretty much at the right spot which will render me blind if i do this. any suggestions on how to accomplish something simmilar?
Bill, are you selling those "dirty orange jumpers" on your web store? If not you should. It would be some good PP merch
+Bill Doran yeah thought so, you probably have a connection with it, I'm not going to take it away.
you have template of this kyrim Draugr Deathlord costume?
You're both my favourite cosmakerssss
Thanks so much! =)
I could really use a circuit diagram for the lights. If you have one, please send it my way!
Edit: Also, am I right to assume that you used one closed circuit for each eye instead of splitting one circuit for both?
+Princedorkface Sorry I don't have a diagram. They LEDS are wired in parallel to the battery with a switch between the battery and lights.
Ok so I am officially lost and confused. For the power switch is it one black and one red, or both red, or both black? I have seen videos on youtube with different connections and their lights are still working and light up and everything. Now I am just confused on which way is correct. : S Can anybody help please?
Polarity doesn't matter on the switch. It just needs to interrupt the circuit at any point in the wiring.
whats that black cloth that u can see through called
this gives awesome idea for overlord cosplay now just to buy your book and save more money
you are friggin' awesome.... high five for you and the wife and hugses all the way from brussels...
You make it looks so easy! That Super Bright LED link doesn't seem to work for me though...

+Sebastien Dufrenne Thank you! I was so overwhelmed with the selection on that site haha
+Bill Doran Thank you! I'm also curious as to your preference with using the warm white LED as oppose to the cool or the pure white light - is there any particular reason or artistic preference behind it?
***** Thank you for make all of these video !
Do you sell these?

Can you please make Katniss's Bow from the mockingjay???
"The short answer, LEDs!" Ok *clicks away from video*
Hello... Bill Doran, Great vid thanks for sharing
+Punished Props how you make the horns?
They created the rough shape with craft foam and then filled it with expanding foam. After it had dried, they removed the craft foam and wrapped the entire thing with worbla stripes.
I used that technique too, and it turned out great ;) A more detailed explanation is on their homepage.
aaaaand subscribed
btw. you're on Propnomicon
Could you make me a Dovakiin armor? plz?
Amazing job!
use oil paint for washing. it makes it more realistic than acrylic but dries a very long time.
+crankyboiy I love using oil paints for weathering mechanical props. It looks so great!

Umm,why you did tutorial on soldering when you are "terrible at electronics"
