Another great shooting coach is mike dunn his ig is seemikedunn, he ix very technical in the same way. Watching guys like this really has helped me alot.
AJ you talked about staying in your shooting pocket always. Question: does this apply to post fades like MJ Kobe? they seem to bring it up from the side to avoid the swipe. just curious about your take on this @AJ Lapray @IN THE LAB
Crazy when you see a high level dude like D’Vontay still have so much to improve on basics like one hand form shooting and arc.. gonna get a lot better interacting with a lot of these guys with diverse skill sets like AJ and even Dev
I’ve learned a lot on my own just watching videos of Curry and Klay. Those two in my opinion have the most effortless and beautiful shots in the league. I study their form and try to replicate it. AJ taught you something important. Having a quicker release and higher release is super beneficial against higher competition. I’ve always been slower and less athletic than most people I play but I really worked on my shot and learning of different ways to get it off over my opponents.
First we see AJ coaching D’Vontay next up we’re gonna see Dev taking him under his wing showing the hesi and all sorts of other micro tricks. Cool seeing dudes who can be competitive w each other and still help one another out
First of all, AJ is the man. You love to see people helping each other get better. The level of arc is what makes Curry's shot what it is. I think you have a completely different type of shot. Yours is kinda like how Herro shot when he was in HS but like AJ said, that extra split second makes a giant diff so Herro also changed his shot to a more fluid one-motion shot when he entered the NBA (vs what he did in HS, which is shooting at the apex of his jump - he was pretty much unguardable doing it that way). Aside from the one-motion being a more efficient shot, it's probably much easier on the legs shooting that way as well long term. Easier to use if you have handles though, I think, because it's a quicker release and you're also a bit lower to the ground - enough for good defenders to get to it unless u can create separation
As a basketball coach/minimal trainer for basketball working with kids/teens, this is spot on. I teach/start every workout with this exact warm up. It works. He was still pulling it too far back here and there but it’s definitely worth the time to perfect it. “The quicker the trigger, the deadlier the aim”. Keep it up Friga. He just gave you a gem and cheat code. The higher your release point COMBINED with a quicker release lends to higher arcs and higher percentages in your shooting. Considering you have great form to begin with, those little tweaks will work wonders. Also, you can extend your range by using your fingertips/wrist more. It’s not about power or upper body strength even though they play a part. It’s your touch. Perfect that too and defenders will fear you more, opening up the floor for you so you can hesi and drive more. Respect to you and AJ. 🙏🏽
AJ explains things in an easy way to digest and apply! Good examples and drills to implement myself. Another thing I like to focus on my shot is how my initial stance is and balance; being on the balls of my feet from the beginning to the end and making sure that I jump a little forward to generate more power from my legs and making sure that my arms are just guiding the ball in. I notice that my shot is more efficient that way.
Issac, you just pointed out the other part of having a good shot. Balance and being on the front of your feet as part of the shot motion. Too many players are flat footed or roll their feet through the shot motion. Wasted energy and doesn't help with balance. To help do this you can do the little hop/jump that AJ mentioned.
impressive to see you be a "knock down shooter" without ever practising one handed shots. I started doing them 2 weeks ago and gone from 20% to 50% accuracy at least from mid range.
Good luck at those tryouts. A little tip with your defense, you tend to have your right foot forward and right hand up when defending a player, even though they are right handed. This gives them a lot more space to either blow by you or take a shot. With your left foot forward and your left hand up, you are closer to their shooting pocket, which will make the shot harder for them to get off, and they will be more forced to go left on the drive. Just something to think about. Edit: fixing some spelling errors
Love this from AJ, exactly the way I approach teaching....less movement, whether it's side to side or forward to back, is always better for consistency!
Yo D’vontay - speaking from experience, don’t let shooting mechanics changes get in your head. Make sure you have a solid off season before trying to integrate changes. You’re so close to tryouts. Even small little concepts can get in the way early and give you some mild yips. Your shot is effective and nice already. You mainly catapult your shot when your lower body shot prep isn’t on point. And then you catapult when you do turn around fades. When you shoot one handed, don’t forget to sequence your legs properly for power, otherwise you practice something unrealistic and push the ball too much. Then you lack the timing of legs/arms when you go to shoot for real, especially when changing your form.
This is good knowlege. Friga is the type to eat all the knowledge up if it helps him get better. Don't see him out here like "I don't need to do that". This is the heart type of a true baller, you can never learn enough.
AJ seems like a great guy and i know from watching his channel a great hooper keep grinding friga i have been watching since you got started much love from cleveland
This was really cool collab. AJ is such a cool dude. Must have felt great fixing this small details. AJ probably won a few more ones is what I am predicting
Aj gave some great advice in minimalizing movement. I'd like to see one more change to your shot, which would be a slight turn to the left to align the right side of your body(foot, knee, hip, elbow, fingers) with the middle of the basket. Right now you have your torso facing the basket straight on and that cause a lot tension in your right shoulder, which causes more misses and discomfort. You can see you struggle to battle the tension and keep alignment at about 7:20 with a miss at 7:30. Watch some of the greats shoot the ball they all turn their body to the left(as right handers). turning your body to the left will continue to minimize movement! GL in the tryouts and 1v1 with dev
This one-handed shot technique is critical to use. It forces you to shoot from the shooting hand side and not across your body. It teaches you to keep your arm & elbow in and not all flayed out. It teaches muscle memory for a smooth motion and release. And it causes you to shoot more with of a motion of pushing the ball up and out instead of cocking your arm and slinging the ball (as AJ said, catapulting) at the basket (like throwing a baseball). Damn man... AJ showed him how to "reach for the cookie jar" to improve his arc on the shot. He also showed how to cross over the ball to put it into the shooting pocket as part of the motion. This is helpful for a right handed shooter going left and then pulling up (and vice versa for a left handed shooter). As part of that he showed him how to immediately go into shooting motion off the dribble. One thing I can add is to start this exercise on your back. Have the ball in your shooting hand and start in the shooting pocket. Just push the ball up and out of your hand, then catch it on the way back. It takes practice, but once you get the motion/cadence down it will help improve your shot motion a lot. Do multiple repetitions until it is easy to do and fluid. Then you stand up about 2-3 feet from the front of the rim and do it again, and do multiple repetitions. Step back a couple of feet and repeat. Keep doing it until you reach a distance that you cannot hit from. As you move away from the basket start to bend your knees and use your legs to give you the power on the shot. Make the whole body move in one fluid motion. I know some of you will rag on me and say I was only a High School B-baller, but I've coached a lot of kids with these techniques and seen their shot improve. I know, I had a "Shooting Coach" in a B-ball camp show me these techniques and it made me a lot better shooter. I would do this exercise from straight on to the hoop/backboard, and then go to each side and baseline repeating it all. It takes time to do this all. But you will find your shot becoming a lot smoother, to where it will just be a natural and unconscious action/thing to do on your shot. Watch Steph Curry during practice and in games and you'll see what I mean. AJ, major shout out to you on this. I've seen your videos and have seen all of this in practice. Your shot is so fluid it kills, poetry in motion. Your shot reminds me of a lot of the great shooters over the years (Pistol Pete, MJ, Ron Harper, JJ Reddick, and Steph Curry to name a few).
What up bro, good luck on your try out, I have high school try outs on the 7th and your a big inspiration to me. Take care and have a good one (goes for everyone here).

I know these types of videos are probably less popular than dunking on people at parks, but this type of stuff is gold. If you put out a videos on handles/beating your defender that would be amazing
Those one hand drills are good but you gotta make sure you train your rhythm with a one motion shot so you transfer energy from you legs more efficiently. That's the difference between a smooth shooter like curry and someone with a hitch like Markelle Fultz who can generate more power than curry but can't efficiently get it into the ball.
