Beautiful collage papers, so many ideas to try!!! I just wanted to mention that if you spritz a thin layer of water over the top of your mediums that you don't use often, it will seal the medium and it won't dry out. All you have to do is give it a stir and it's ready to go again.
Thank you! I hope that you give these techniques a try! That's a great tip, thanks for sharing! Since I created this video, I also learned another great trick- add a layer of Glad Press n' Seal on top of all my medium containers. You can also push them into the containers if you've mostly used a product. It keeps them from drying out as fast and makes the lids easier to get off. Who knew, right?
I’ve always just used spackle for stencils. It works just as well as modeling paste. You can add clear gesso or a little sand-free grout powder to give it less of a “plasticky” feel.
That's a great idea, thanks for sharing! I did try drywall joint compound at one point but I found that it wouldn't reliably stick to the surface, even after using gesso. I tried adding in more water and that worked better. I generally would have to seal it with matte medium or another sealant otherwise it would flake off the surface, so I found it too fussy to get good results with. It could also be that I live in a very dry (semi-arid) climate which may be part of the problem. I'm glad to hear that you've gotten really good results, I just found that I was having trouble getting consistent results with it.
@@hopalongstudio I just get the cheap spackle from the dollar store. I make sure I stir it a bit then put in on with either a palette knife or an expired gift card/hotel key card/debit card.

I'm always looking for feedback about what I'm doing well and what I can improve on, so thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm so glad that it's given you a bunch of ideas on how to use tissue paper. Tissue paper is so versatile and inexpensive, it's such a great medium for creative projects!
Glad, I came across you this evening. I love colorizing tissue paper. I have t tied thick mediums before adding color, so now, I have something fun to experiment with. Thanks. You have a new subbie.
I just found you and I'm so glad I did. Thanks for sharing this awesome video. I was so inspired that I tried it immediately with some cheap tissue paper that I had on hand. Not sure what happened but as soon as I added water everything bled through the bottom and I had a huge mess on my hands, lol. Thankfully I had it on an easy to clean surface board. I used acrylic ink and India ink. What did I do wrong?
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! I tend do add color to the tissue paper on a piece of freezer paper, parchment paper or a craft mat (a non-stick surface). I then set it aside to completely dry. Once it's dry, the acrylic ink should be absorbed into the surface. I tend to let it air dry for the best results. The good thing about using paint is that it'll actually make the cheap tissue paper stronger. I tend to use art quality tissue paper as it's better made (here's the link to what I use: amzn.to/4aca5SU) and stands up a lot better to wet mediums. I hope that helps and that you get better results next time!

I haven't, mostly because I'm worried that if I add too much water, the tissue will tear before I get any paint on it. But perhaps I should give it a try! I think in the future I'll either water down my paint a bit before applying or use high flow acrylics. It probably doesn't help that some of my paint is quite old!
That's a great idea! I have started doing that a bit more recently and I'm hoping that it will help. Being in a semi-arid climate is always so hard on my pastes!
@@updatedjustnow271 Thanks for the suggestion. From your personal experience, have you found a difference between using distilled water vs. regular water and the affect that it has on pastes?
Thank you for your video! Did you use matte medium to attach the tissue to your paper or something else? Did you finish the page with any kind of sealer or can you do that?? Thanks so much!!💕
You're welcome- thanks for watching and I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Yes, I do use matte medium to attach the tissue to the paper, it's the best medium because it won't tear the tissue. I usually add a layer of matte medium to the surface, gently add the tissue paper and add a layer of matte medium on top. Since I mostly work in a journal, I don't usually seal the pages. If you're working on a canvas piece or a piece that will get a lot of sunlight, I'd consider using a varnish to finish it off. But because I'm using artist grade gel and matte mediums they usually provide enough sealant to protect my pieces without needing anything extra.
That is true. Though I don't mind having the different color values that adding paint and then applying water adds to the tissue paper. It depends on the overall effect that you are looking for. Thanks for your comment!
Hi, I was just wondering at 17:58 what glue/paste did you use to get the tissue paper to stick in your journal? And also wondering if you can use this technique on cotton and linen canvas too- not just paper. Thanks! :) Love you work!
Thank you! For the adding the tissue paper I used Liquitex Matte Medium. Yes, this would work on other surfaces like cotton and linen. If you are working on an untreated surface, you will probably need to apply more medium as I find untreated canvas and surfaces will absorb a bit more of the matte medium. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Thank your for the video. I've been looking into this for making may own covers for journals. You stated that the tissue paper is fragile when wet, have you tried putting the tissue paper onto plastic or waxed paper? You can then manipulate your tissue paper without tearing.
Thanks for watching! Yes, the tissue paper is fragile with wet. When filming the video, I had several silicone mats that I was using for the wet tissue paper. I would color the tissue and then pull the entire mat to set it aside to dry. I think I edited it out and didn't mention that in the video. I often use parchment paper because it is silicone coated and when paint or ink dries, it won't stay stuck to the surface. Tissue paper would work great for covers in a journal, though I would add a medium over top for durability. Sometimes I even add a layer of pouring medium or tar gel to help protect my journal covers and make them more durable. Thanks for your question!
@@hopalongstudio Thank you for your prompt reply. I was trying to make my own book cloth, and using your process to decorate the tissue paper and sandwiching muslin or linen between the tissu to strengthen. I haven't used Tar Gel, but I understand you can colour it so may give that a try maybe adding gold flakes. Thank you again for taking the time to share your skills.
That's a really good question and I don't know the answer. Though it made me curious so I googled to see what I could find. From a few minutes of research, I didn't see anything pointing to touching paper making it more acidic. It talked more about the process of buffering the paper to make it less acidic which will help with the longevity of the paper. But one thing to consider, if you are adding any sort of matte medium, acrylic gel or paste to the paper, this will make it archival. This means that because it is encased in plastic (acrylic) and this will protect it from the elements. If you are using good quality products (like Golden mediums that are tested based off of a 75 year life) this will prevent your project from yellowing or going brittle over time. I don't know if that really answers your question, but let me know what you think! I love that you asked such an interesting question!
