Just make sure stereo microscope or compound binocular microscpe has enough range to ajust distance between eyepieces. Children's faces are small and the distance between eyes can be smaller than the microscope allows to ajust. That may be not the case for 6 years old, but my 4 years daughter cannot yet look with both eyes simultaneously in my binocular microscope.

I totally agree, that a stereo microscope is better. My 5 year old son can work with it, without any help.
I have introduced him to the compound microscope, but I have to help with focusing, changing the magnification and specimen preparation.
If you really want a compound microscope, I advise you to get prepared samples like Bresser’s Smart Slides. They are made out of plastic and seem very durable. Each slide have a QR code on them with links to a discription of the specimen.
When we play with the microscopes, my son has the stereo microscope and I sit next to him with the compound microscope. When he is done with a slide in the stereo, I make him write the number on the slide in his notebook, then I write what it is and make him copy the text, so he also learns to write and to keep a simple journal. While he does that, I take the slide and put it in the compound microscope and let him see the same specimen with a higher magnification.
You can also make your children draw what they see, but so far my son is not interested in that part.
So all in all, stereo is good for a 6 year old, but compound is not impossible.
Sorry for the long comment, it’s hard to be concise in a foreign language.

I was in this very situation when COVID hit and I found myself homeschooling my early 5yr old. We watched several videos from MH and my daughter was so intrigued. I reached out to Oliver for some advice and, well, it mirrors this video.
I looked at Oliver’s list and with all the other info from MH and Oliver. The item I purchased was about $190 (USD). Good bang for the buck. I purchased an LED model which allows the unit to be portable (built in rechargeable batteries).
Oliver’s advice and insights are spot on, and my 5yr old and I have used it on just about everything. Even the first baby tooth that fell out 🥴.
Keep It Simple for the kids and they can focus on exploring instead of fighting the machine. 👍
    Thanks again Oliver.

Thank you so much for answering my question and so elaborately at that! And I have to admit, my husband and I are both really looking forward to having the stereo microscope. As soon as the kids are asleep, we'll confiscate the object and go nuts. No problem with the motivation there ;o). It will be wonderful to share a hobby all together. Thanks a million, you really know your stuff!

Thank you very much for this video. I have three grandsons, ages 5, 7, and 9. I was a teacher for 22 years, the last 17 in grade school teaching. I've learned if you give a child a tool and minimal instruction, they will take it from there.

Thank you! My grandchildren will now receive a much more fun and appropriate scope. I would surely have made a poor choice without your advice.

Great advice and I totally agree, the extremely narrow depth of field and the preparation required for compound scopes to achieve satisfactory results are challenging (not impossible) for youngsters and the quick “chuck it under as it is” 3d effect of the stereo keeps the interest up. Thats how I started and I was 45 when I obtained my first stereo scope! Lol.

This is exactly the video I needed now. Looking for a microscope for my 6 1/2 year old and was torn between compound and stereo. Stereo it is! Simple is good, he can do more and watch me setting up less. Will see if I can buy through one of your links.

Which stereo microscope would you recommend for a 10 year old. Thinking around $130

Thanks very much. I found your advice very useful but was puzzled that you dont seem to recommend any particular brand or model of microscope. This would have been very welcome. I also looked for links/suggestions in your video description, and I find that your recommendation for children is not a stereo microscope, seeming to contradict the advice you give in the video. I'm confused. Please help. Thanks.

Only for specific applications, or if you are a hobbyist, you can get one to play around with, and then you can see its advantages and disadvantages. I have them (to increase and also decrease magnifications) and I do not use them. Magnification decrease necessary if you need a larger distance between obective and specimen. Increase magnification results in dark image and very low depth of field. bad image quality. I was told by an insect specialist, that he needs high magnification of total 90x to count the hair on some ants because this is necessary to determine the species of the ant.
