NOTE: Do not look at the Sun through a telescope! You could seriously damage your eyes. (We're backed up a row of tall trees in the video, that's what Isaac was pointing at during filming).
I have the SkyScanner 100, Celestron Omni AZ 102, and Learn to Stargaze for Kids of All Ages thanks to this channel. Your videos are very informative, educational, and most importantly, easy to understand. Keep up the great work! PS - I've even learned from this channel to take the Starsense Explorer Phone mount off of a SSE 114LT and installed it on an Orion XT8. I now consider this a dream setup for beginners, even my 11yr old was able to find deep sky objects fast and easy!
@@LearnToStargaze I also got the AZ GTI, which gets a lot of mention on your channel, been also using that with the Skyscanner and a Zwo planetary camera for a fairly inexpensive EAA setup.
@@LearnToStargaze For the XT8, since it has a steel tube, I was able to attach the SSE phone mount to the XT8 with magnets instead of drilling holes in the telescope.
Thanks john, this is by far the best video on telescopes for kids ive seen. You dont mind saying what is junk either which is great. Bought a Explore Scientific 102 doublet refractor 600mm for my grand daughter but im keeping it. I will get her a Newtonian 6" instead from All Star Telescope. Think she would enjoy it more. Thanks for your help.
I wish I would have watched your video before I bought a “bird feeder” telescope 🔭 from Amazon… I was so excited to see the night sky at our lake house that I just bought the telescope with the best reviews on Amazon. Ugh, now I’m frustrated and can’t see anything. I’ll be sending it back and buying one of these 3 telescopes tomorrow!
Previously owned: Celestron Astro Master 114AZ? $165 CDN Celestron Power Seeker 127 EQ $200 CDN Celestron First Scope 114 EQ $125 CDN Thank you for your feedback, Mike
What an interesting video! Some years ago, I bought a Nikon 8x12 binocular for me and a kids type for my daughter. Hers it was a waste of money, because with plastic lenses, we could see better without then with. Now, that she is turning 7, I would like o to give a telescope for her, the choices on a budget are overwhelming and I know that a bad choice would be more discouraging for the hobby.
I use my Z-100 for solar viewing with a solar film. Only being 400mm focal length I found it works well for bright objects. The dust cover comes with a big hole I taped the solar film to it. Use a 20mm eyepiece at 20x magnification it shows sunspots quite well.

Stability matters most with kiddos. My 5 and 7 year olds have an issue *touching* the scope while observing, and a Go-To keeps that object firmly in view. If mom or dad can learn how to align it properly. Cheaper option is a tabletop Dob.
Hello, John! I'm so glad I found your channel and this video. This is so informative, helping what to get. I'm buying one for my 8 y/o son for this Christmas. After watching your video and reviewing comments, I narrowed down to these two: 1. Celestron Omni AZ 102 at Costco for $259 2. Newtonion Firstlight 114 at Amazon / Explore Firstlight for $250 (And Twilight Nano mount ok? I remember not buying with EQ mount) What would you recommend between these two? Thank you again, and I'm buying your book which will be really helpful! Update: just ordered Celestron omni az 102 from Costco!
That's a solid scope for those who have mastered the EQ mount. I used an manual EQ mount for RASC's explore the Moon program while I was hosting "Moon at Noon." It helped, especially since we had to sketch each target.
Hi John, we bought a telescope off amazon for Christmas 2022 and it seems to be pretty good for beginners, but the "camera tripod" is maddening!! I've been wanting to upgrade it but just don't know what kind would be best. Then I got to thinking maybe just invest in a whole new telescope altogether. Been looking at the table top Celestron Explorer 130mm dobsonion (with the star sense). I like the idea of a table top mount being a lot easier to move around for the kids, and the star sense app is pretty appealing. At this price point though, if I am to invest around $500 (CAD), is there something better out there? We are mostly interested in observing planets and I personally would like to be able to see some deep space nebulae. I don't want to fall into the Bird-Jones you warned about! Coincidentally, we purchased your kids stargazing book before I ever stumbled upon your youtube channel. Thank you for the great resources!
Hi Julia! You might be able to find one for a much lower cost either on sale on refurbished by B&H photo I really enjoy StarSense, and my Kids love the table top design. You need a laser collimator to check the mirrors ($25 on Amazon). I usually check this page once an a while as they often have this scope around $300: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802903899-USE/celestron_22481_starsense_explorer_130mm_f_5.html
Thank you so much for your videos and books. I have enjoyed 50 things to see on the moon. I have been keeping an eye for used telescopes and was able to find a Sky Watcher Star Travel 102 with an AZ3 mount with slow motion controls. Is this a good telesocope for a beginner? I also picked up a vintage Celestron C90 Mak that came with a photo tripod, but I am going to replace the photo tripod with a ALT AZ mount with slow motion controls. Would this setup be a decent setup for a beginner telescope. Thank you again.
The problem is for us being in Australia l, nothing seems to be available. Everything you recommend is out of stock. Can you recommend anything that is available for Christmas coming up . Thank you
The Omni 102 can be a real bargain when Costco puts it on sale for $160 USD. That said, at least my sample, and apparently several others have had problems with the slow motion control in altitude. I’ve tried many times to adjust the tension just so on mine and, well, unless the scope is perfectly balanced the slow motion won’t work. The dovetail supplied with the scope must be replaced with an 8 inch to have enough travel to balance the scope. And obtain a 1.5mm allen key to adjust out any slop in the focusing. Access is the two holes on top of the focusing mount. I would rate the included AZ mount as barely adequate (if that) for this scope. It’s better suited to a ST80 or other small, rich field refractor, also works with my Orion 90mm mak and the silly cheap 70mm mak from Spectrum Optical. Ok, rant over. John, you are providing a great service to the stargazing community with your videos. Thank you and keep up the fine work.
My Omni mount had not properly tensioned AZ clutch. I disassembled it, and adjusted the top nut. It's good that I have suitable Circlip Pliers, don't know how to put everything back without them. Also, I'd say, that amount of grease they applied to plastic gears is pathetic, so it's better to have some silicone grease on hand.
Tremendous value from this video, keep up the great work! 🙌 If I may ask - can you recommend, FOR EUROPEANS, a refractor like your video "In Depth Review - Celestron Omni AZ 102mm Refractor Telescope" 🙏 these darn companies in this part of the world are charging exactly what you mentioned in the video: double and beyond.
Thanks for the tip! However, they don't have any refractors with AZ 🙃 (only one without 100mm for 630usd). I have another Newtonian in mind in their shop but I don't want to write it out here since the specifications are clearly not transparent for customers. Too bad. It's a jungle to evaluate quality optics.
For an adult, if you can get the mount with Go-to for around 600 euros, that would be pretty awesome. Not sure if this comes with the hand controller, but the quality is there : www.bresser.com/p/bresser-messier-ar-102s-600-exos-2-4702608
Thanks a lot! But it has the Eq stand unfortunately. Also, my budget is 250 Eur. Could probably stretch it a bit, but not for plastic and certainly not for the companies profit margins 😄
Recently got the Explore Scientific firstlight 102 refractor. So far so good 👍 wondering what types of accessories you'd recommend getting like filters, finder scopes (the red dot finder that came with it is very tinted and hard to see what you're aiming at through it) best phone mount, etc. Thanks from a big fan
@LearnToStargaze thanks so much! And thanks for playing a part in getting this hobby started for me and my son. Keep up the great work and inspiring more like us. Your videos are everything you hope they are 🤜🤛
Looking at a Sky Watcher Heritage 150P. Want to see planets and the moon. Some galaxies maybe?? I am a very very new beginner and this woukd be my first scope.
It’s a good scope, I’d get the Starsense if you’re looking for a tabletop since it will help you find deep sky objects. Galaxies will be determined more by the darkness of your skies.
@@LearnToStargaze thank you for the fast reply. So this one wouldn't be considered a "bird Jones"? I'm watching your review on the 114LT and just want to be sure the DX 100AZ is a good match.
Hi there, I have just started watching your videos and can't be any happier with the high level content and easiness of understanding technical information. Question - if Celestron Omni is unavailable (and it is), which model currently offered by Celestron would replace it or even surpass it's qualities for a 9 YO kid? Thank you very much!
@@LearnToStargaze I can't thank you enough for your reviews and quick answer here... but decided to gift my son the Celestron AstroMaster 102AZ - 100 dollars less, solid 4,4 reviews at amazon (with thousands of ratings), way shorter and more portable... as long as he sees Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and maybe other celestial bodies, I am happy. On th other hand, if you strongly strongly recommend NOT BUYING this scope, please let me know! 🙂 I don't want to miss the chance of creating a great and healthy hobbie at home.
@@rodrigoricardi7371 That's a pretty good scope for a kid! All of those targets can be seen from the city. Your first target from dark skies will be M13 in Hercules, the Andromeda Galaxy, and in winter, the Orion Nebula. Clear skies!
Deep space requires dark skies. 130 won’t be a huge step up mainly because of the central obstruction. The extra inch if you went up to a 6 inch Dobsonian would probably make a more noticeable difference.
The skywatcher 102 might be the same Price and a bit higher quality. It just needs a 90 degree diagonal and a red dot finder if you don’t like the finderscope.
Great information- thank you. My soon to be 6 year old loves space and is asking for a telescope for his birthday. I see Costco has Celestron 90AZ-SR Refactor Telescope With Smartphone Adapter and Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ with Eyepiece Kit & Smartphone Adapter what are your thoughts?
The 90az might be okay for a 6 year old to see the Moon, but it still fails my minimum requirements for a basic telescope, especially for kids. How about an Orion Skyscanner?
Made do with the Celestron travel scope you showed as the bad example for a long time lol. Not easy to use, but it worked well enough to pique my interest. Now I've upgraded to a StarSense DX130, which is infinitely easier to use. I will say that the little guy's small size is great to bring on campouts and can work decently well to blow people's minds now that I know what I'm doing.
Hi! Thank you for the video! Our family had our first starglaze experience this weekend at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Virginia, and we loved it! Looking to buy either the Celestron Omni AZ 102 for $259 at Costco or the Celestron Astromaster 130EQ for $249 at Costco. Which one would you recommend more?
Thank you for the video! It was helpful. I am considering between National Geographic 102 mm StarAPP Telescope (Model 80-10260) and National Geographic Star App 114 Reflector Telescope (Model Explorer NT114CF) currently selling in Costco in Canada. Wondering if you have any opinion on either . Thank you once again.
New to stargazing/telescopes with 11 yr old son…your thoughts on Celestron Starsense DX 100 AZ with smartphone app?? Made the mistake of purchasing a GSKYER 70mm, a waste of money and lots of frustration, learned my lesson: RUclips everything before you buy 😂 The telescope I’m asking about is in our budget with cool features. Please advise! Thank You!
Hi John After a visit to the observatory with the children, my interest, and that of the children, in stargazing was sparked. That's how I came across your channel. I think the videos you make are very clear and simple! I would like to buy a beginner's telescope for my 10 and 7 year old sons to look at the moon and the planets. But you can already hear me coming, of course I don't want to spend hundreds of euros on that right away. The prices here in Belgium have also increased enormously when I compare them with the prices of the telescopes that you discuss on your videos. That's why the 100mm versions are actually too expensive for what I would like to spend. I would like to hear your opinion on the following options: Celestron - AC 80/900 AZ Inspire (€319) Bresser - AC 80/640 Nano AZ (€189) Celestron - StarSense Explorer LT 80AZ (€299) Or do you have an even better proposal? Thank you in advance! Greetings Quinten
I’ve owned this one, and it was wonderful. You might want to add a red-dot finder. You can also upgrade this in the future to a better mount. www.bresser.de/en/Astronomy/Telescopes/BRESSER-Messier-AR-102-600-NANO-AZ-Telescope.html
Thank you for your vdo. I am very very beginner to learn about stargazing. I'd love to ask if the Sky Watcher Heritage 130mm tabletop Dobsonian pass or not? Thank you.
@LearnToStargaze compare the one I asked and the one you mentioned in the vdo from Costco (the 3rd one), which one is easier to use/set up and more kid friendly?
Great video What about from these two from Costco Celestron 90AZ-SR Refactor Telescope With Smartphone Adapter Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 80AZ Refractor Telescope with Cleaning Kit
Im wondering if the skywatcher heritage 100p is any good? Was also thinking about the ursa major 102mm Tabletop Dobsonian. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Hi! Thank you SO much for the great video - I love your story and advice! We are looking at getting our 5 year old grandson a telescope. We found the Orion SkyScanner 100mm TableTop Reflector Telescope on Orion's website, but also noticed the Orion SkyScanner BL102mm TableTop Reflector Telescope, which is on sale and a little less expensive. I can't find, however, whether it meets the criteria for having a red dot or bullseye finder. We would really appreciate your thoughts on the BL 102mm! Thank you in advance! We will also be buying your book, which looks amazing!!!! :)
Great video! My kids are super interested in planets right now! I am looking at options and think the starsense technology would make this easier and therefore help keep them interested! My question is, is there any starsense telescopes you would recommend in the sub $300 USD range?
Thanks! The Starsense enabled tabletop dobsonians are really the only starsense scopes I think that kids could use effectively. Here's a used one on B&H photo: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802903899-USE/celestron_22481_starsense_explorer_130mm_f_5.html
@@LearnToStargaze thanks for the response. That looks like a nice telescope, but a bit pricey. I saw your video on the Inspire 100AZ, is that similar to the Explorer DX 100AZ? Would that be a good one (I know Dobsonians are better for kids, but this one fits the budget)
Hi, thanks for a great video. I want to buy the first telescope for my kids and me; I am a newbie at this, but as my son (5 years old) likes to speak about the planets, I want to buy smth, from what I understand, the best telescope (not too expensive) for beginners it's Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ or DX130. As it has an app that makes life easier. I couldn't get what is better for me. Or maybe just buy 102 AZ which is twice as cheap, but then you don't have an app that makes life much easier.
How about a Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 5" SCT. I use this in my stargazing. But I was wondering if anyone else uses one and what you thought of it.
I use this one quite a bit. Great for planets, but for deep sky objects I’ve found it a bit low on contrast compared to its larger peers (such as the C8) or even large refractors. I’m wondering if this is due to the size of the secondary obstruction relative to the aperture.
Just been watching your videos as I have started to do extensive study on telescopes for our family. My son is wanting one for Christmas but also, my partner and I have been thinking about one for ourselves for a long time. Wondering if you know any family friendly scopes that are good for taking around. I have been considering the Celestron Starsense explorer DX5 (usually our grand gifts like that are for the family and he understands this) would this be suitable for a child? He is all science, space, Dinosaurs, bugs and reptiles and takes very good care of his fossils and pets. We would also be a beginner family for this sort of thing. Thank you so much in advanced!
What do you recommend since Orion has shut its doors? I have a four year old and I’d love something I could use with my homeschool group (so a range of younger kids.) I bought a Zhumell Z100 but it looks like it might have been discontinued so I’m returning it. The Explore Firstlight doesn’t have the best of reviews and seems a little cheapy. I was going to buy the Celestron Omni AZ 102 that you recommend but it has Bluetooth. I’d rather buy something without Bluetooth since I’m using it with little kids. Thanks!
@@LearnToStargaze I don’t want to buy a telescope made by a company that’s out of business. When I look up the Omni 102 on Costco it says it includes a smartphone adapter with Bluetooth remote and includes button cell batteries.
Hello! eager to buy your book, I have one question though. How well does it translate for the southern hemisphere? I'm from Chile and I assume your content is focused towards the NH. Thanks, gonna check out the rest of your videos. cheers.
Hi there, greetings from Germany. Just found this channel and saw this video. Well done! I would like to get my kids excited watching the stars with their "own" telescope. I know you said min. is 100mm, so hence I got the the question on entry level Dobson ones which are normally 76/300 or 76/350 at least over here. So you do not recommend these at all?
Many thanks for the swift reply and your help. HHmm ok I need to find the right balance now, I have a 3 year old and a 6 year old. I'll probably go for the bigger one as three years is nothing unless the three year old screams for his own one (hehe). What I'm also planning is we have an observatory 1h away and they open for the public twice a month so planning to take them there as well. Again many thanks and you got one more subscriber ;-) @@LearnToStargaze Ps. One more thing. How often do you collimate your Newton type telescopes?
How is the celestron starsense explorer Lt 114az? Currently it’s about $170 on amazon and I’d like to not go much higher than that since it’s our first telescope. Or if there are other accessories for it that you’d recommend?
Hi John, I am new to your channel. Thank you for your video, it has been very helpful! I am beginning my search for a telescope for my 7 year old son. Our entire family will likely end up using the telescope. I currently have a pair of Orion 10x50 binoculars and I recently acquired a quality camera tripod and a binoculars adapter. I am wondering what are some reflector or dobsonian telescopes you would recommend for a beginner to grow into? Would a 4", 6", or 8" aperture be the best "bang for the buck?" My son will have adult help and I already know the night sky fairly well as I have been observing constellations and some messier objects on and off for years. Also, I am wondering if a dobsonian tabletop mount can be mounted to a tripod and whether or not you would recommend this? Or would it be preferred to mount on a table, or the ground if larger? Thank you for your help, Van
Hi! The best beginner telescope that you would LOVE would be the StarSense 8 inch dobsonian. It takes a while to put together, but StarSense is so easy it’s fun, and the telescope’s aperture is high enough to resolve a full compliment of targets with no compromises. If you’re on a tight budget, there is a table top StarSense now, but I don’t like having a table in the way, as I’m often going from one side of the sky to the other. Hope this helps!
@@LearnToStargaze thanks for the recommendation John! It looks great but might be a bit out of our price range. What else do you recommend at say the $500 or less range?
Could you recommend a telescope (available in the UK) that is similar in budget £100-£150 to the Zhumell, but has a stand/tripod for my 8 year old son?
So looking to get one for my 7yr old grandson and the Explore First 114mm Newtonian Twilight Nano is on sale. Would this be a good way to get them started?
I remember when i was 12 i was watching the sky moon/jupiter through my powerseeker 60eq and all there was to see was moon and jupiter until i saw some kind of "star" until i looked at it and saw saturn for the first time at a extremely great angle i was jumping on how happy i was it looked really cool though it was really small i could still see the rings pretty well now my birthday is coming pretty soon and i dont really know what to ask for i thought of bresser pollux 150/1400 or something else. I can't really decide on what to buy my budget is till 370€ do you have some recommendations??
Thanks for all the Info! I was thinking to buy a refractor SkyWatcher Mercury 60/700 AZ2 as my first telescope (I'm on a budget and telescopes are quite expensive for my country's wages). I would have taken the Orion SkyScanner as I like it a lot, but it doesn't deliver here. Is the one I've chosen good or could you recommend something else on a budget?
I have a autistic son who’s is 9years old, we bought him a tabletop dob(70mm) for Christmas last year. He uses it every night even when it’s cloudy! Was thinking of upgrading and from what I’ve read, am thinking of a startravel 120 and putting it on a skywatcher az gti mount. Would this be a good pairing? Or possibly overkill, reason for goto is he has problems retaining info.
That scope might be a bit heavy for they mount. For that price, I’d get a Starsense Dobsonian. The user interface is super simple (just click on the star map and push the telescope toward the arrows to reach each target).
Basically, mass-produced "Bird-Jones" is a short-tube Newt with permanently attached 2x Barlow. The problem is not even this lens in a focuser, but the short tube newt with a cheap spherical mirror itself, combined with a cheap focuser, and included high-magnification eyepiece. Put a cheap 2x barlow, and 4mm eyepiece into your scope, and feel the pain of a Bird-Jones user.
@@abdilkaya7981as a decoration perhaps, but it doesn’t look like it was designed to be used, at least not on space. There are loads of good scopes made by bresser, just look for ones on AZ mounts with 102mm of aperture.

I haven’t tried that one specifically, but I’ve tried 3 other 114mm newtonians, and I’ve found the optics lacking, they’re great for young kids who want to see the Moon. A much better option would be a 6 inch Dobsonian or 102mm refractor: www.bresser.de/en/Astronomy/Telescopes/BRESSER-Messier-6-Dobson.html

Currently, online, this seems to be the best option: www.amazon.com/Celestron-StarSense-Smartphone-App-Enabled-Compatible/dp/B083JP3QYJ Costco may still have the Omni 102, but they do not post their prices online.
@@LearnToStargaze thanks much I’m looking for my grandson one he’s 7 years old so you think this would be the best I really want something good though not just seeing blurred or little dots
I am buying 90mm lens for making my telescope is it ok or some more is needed and also suggest which telescope should I buy for viewing planet in some detail refractor or reflector. Please help me I am in great confusion coz mirror are cheaper than lenses.
What are you making your 90mm telescope out of? That sounds like a fun project! Planet views get better with aperture and focal length combined, which as you point out is cheaper with mirrors. A 6 inch Dobsonian is a good example of a beginner telescope with great planetary views.
So…I’m down the rathole…I’m looking for a telescope for my 11 year old. I’m looking for something that’s good for the moon, Jupiter and the rings of Saturn. Assuming a $250 budget, and not looking for a hobby killer, what would you recommend. I think I’ve watched all of your videos at this point so I’m leaning towards the astromaster 70az but any ideas you might have would be much appreciated.
Hello, I was wondering if the Explore FirstLight 114mm Newtonian Telescope with Twilight Nano Mount - FL-N114500TN meets your standards for a beginner? Looking for a telescope for my 10 year old. Thank you!
GOTO mount is great for beginners, if an experienced person sets it up every time ;) Buy a Celestron StarSense Explorer - works great, and very easy to use
what telescope should I get I have narrowed it down to two I would like any advise its the Orion 10012 SkyScanner 100mm Tabletop Reflector Telescope or HSL Reflector Telescope,76mm Aperture 700mm Focal Length Astronomy Reflector Telescopes
My first telescope is celestorn astroMaster 60mm even though it’s not 100mm but to me as 7 year old the moon looks fantastic and even though I can’t see the Jupiter colour bands I can see the moons and because I don’t have a dad because he died so I learned it by myself but it’s super easy to use just follow the light or use the red dot finder but because of my little brother it broke but hey if you got understanding kid it’s perfect and cheapest but hey that my opinion
It’s okay. I wish it had slow motion controls like the Omni 102AZ, or the Nat Geo 102, or the skywatcher 102 (they all use about the same lens), but if it’s priced around $150 or so then it’s an acceptable alternative for a beginner telescope.
Hi, my 6 year old daughter was given this terrible cheap “lunarscope tabletop telescope” and she has been so into it taking it outside all the time to try and look through it and Iv tried so hard to stay up at night and figure this thing out and Iv come to the conclusion that it’s just junk and frustrating. Please can you recommend a good scope that is user friendly and has great quality viewing of the moon and stars. I’d be happy to spend up to $300 my daughter would love this! Nick
That’s awesome she’s that interested in astronomy! There are two amazing scopes on B&H photos used site right now. For the Dob, you’d want to add a red dot finder, and you’d need a laser collimator ($20) to check the mirrors (an easy process), but these are both really great scopes: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802897122-USE/sky_watcher_s11600_classic_150p_6_traditional.html www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802903899-USE/celestron_22481_starsense_explorer_130mm_f_5.html

@@nickritchie5541for the second scope, you’ll want one of these to make sure the mirrors are lined up correctly: www.amazon.com/Astromania-Alignment-Generation-Collimator-Telescopes/dp/B01D8HMBCQ
I’m just re looking at both. I tend to think that when you pay more you get better but may not be the case? Would you recommend one of these over the other for a beginner? I was only leaning towards the second one you advised on becasue it costs more. Do you think I’m better off with the first or second one as a beginner regardless of the price of both? Thank you again
No, the mount is the biggest issue, as it does not function the way it is supposed to function. Much better telescopes would be the Omni 102, or the Nat Geo 102 (from Costco, generally in store, not online), these are generally below $200 USD. The Z100 or Orion SkyScanner 100 if it's for a kid. If I were you, I'd pick up a used scope from B&H, like this: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802896095-USE/sky_watcher_s10100_startravel_102mm_f_4_9_az.html

Thanks for the bold explanation. Celestron is, Infact advertising their "Toy telescopes" as "Beginner's telescopes". Such a hobby killer.
Yes, I sometime wonder if their marking department is aware of my honesty on the subject.
Why would they do this?
I got the celestron 102 over the holidays and it was such a great gift. Seeing the moon, Jupiter and the rings of saturn have been a blast!

Those are all bird jones scopes are they not?
Nice!
This is phenomenal information. Thank you so much for posting this information for dads that have inquisitive kiddos!

This is a great introduction for astronomy for young people. Thanks for putting it together!
Thanks for the feedback!
Stability matters most with kiddos. My 5 and 7 year olds have an issue *touching* the scope while observing, and a Go-To keeps that object firmly in view. If mom or dad can learn how to align it properly.
Cheaper option is a tabletop Dob.
Yes, I like to use a very stable mount (like the AVX) for outreach with kids. Even if they hang on the scope, it won’t move.
Hello, John! I'm so glad I found your channel and this video. This is so informative, helping what to get. I'm buying one for my 8 y/o son for this Christmas.
After watching your video and reviewing comments, I narrowed down to these two:
1. Celestron Omni AZ 102 at Costco for $259
2. Newtonion Firstlight 114 at Amazon / Explore Firstlight for $250 (And Twilight Nano mount ok? I remember not buying with EQ mount)
What would you recommend between these two? Thank you again, and I'm buying your book which will be really helpful!
Update: just ordered Celestron omni az 102 from Costco!
I have both scopes! The kids find the 114 easier to use, but the Omni has much better views and the pointing is more precise. Hope this helps!
@@LearnToStargazethank you so much!
I use a simple Spaceprobe 130ST. Not too expensive, wide, decent aperture, and good views.
That's a solid scope for those who have mastered the EQ mount. I used an manual EQ mount for RASC's explore the Moon program while I was hosting "Moon at Noon." It helped, especially since we had to sketch each target.
The scope I'm planning to get as my first one is the Startravel 102
Nice! I like that one.

Those are great beginner telescopes! I’ve done a video on each of those setups. Clear skies!
All of Celestron’s AZ mounts tend to have a weak altitude axis. This includes the Starsense lineup.
If I may ask - can you recommend, FOR EUROPEANS, a refractor like your video "In Depth Review - Celestron Omni AZ 102mm Refractor Telescope" 🙏 these darn companies in this part of the world are charging exactly what you mentioned in the video: double and beyond.
Check out the Bresser lineup of 102mm refractors. These seem to change price quite a bit, but sometimes they have some great packages.
Hi! I love that scope! Upgrade the eyepiece, I’d do a Baader Hyperion 10mm, no filters, Rigel QuikFinder, NeXYZ phone mount.

@@LearnToStargaze I think more to make hobby for both of us. Thanks for replying.

Thank you for your help,

Great vid. thanks! Could these telescopes be used by a (just turned) 3 year old?
I doubt it. Kids under 4 have trouble closing one eye. The Orion Skyscanner 100mm would be the best little kids scope.
What’s the scope that you say was “bird Jones’d”? Because I have the Celestron StarSense 130az and it looks similar to the one in your video lol
The Celestron 114 is Bird-Jones. The 130 is great.

Explore Scientific 88-20114 Aurora Ii Flat Black 114Mm Slow Motion AZ Mount Telescope,
It’s similar yes. The black one has slow motion control which can be nice, but sometimes a little over engineered.
First of all great video. Could you please tell me which of these 2 telescopes is better for our family.
Celestron OMNI AZ 102 TELESCOPE
Or
CELESTRON STARSENSE EXPLORER LT 114AZ NEWTONIAN REFLECTOR TELESCOPE
Many thanks looking for a christmas present.
Also the first telescope i mentioned as another varient with xlt az what does this mean. Thanks
Just wondering because i can find the starsense for £198
The omni is proving hard to find in uk and is around £250 or £150 in costco but we dont have a local costco
Hi! Can you find the Starsense tabletop Dobsonian 114? The LT version is not great. My kids love the tabletop telescopes.
Here’s another option in the UK: www.bresseruk.com/By-manufacturer/Bresser/BRESSER-Messier-5-Dobson.html?mtm_campaign=Doofinder&mtm_kwd=4716413&mtm_source=English&mtm_medium=OnSite&mtm_cid=UK&mtm_group=SiteSearch

How about the celestron starsense dobsonian 8.
I don't mind the size
Wonderful telescope. Did you see my video on that one? It was a lot of fun!
@@LearnToStargaze yes
Thanks
what do you think of "Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ with Eyepiece Kit & Smartphone Adapter" at costco? Not finding "celestron 102"
That’s this one: telescopicwatch.com/celestron-astromaster-130eq-telescope-review/
It’s sort of like the “Homer Car” from the simpsons.
Is the Celestron Astromaster 102mm refractor a good telescope for kids? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I like it. It would benefit from slow motion controls, but the pan handle is relatively easy to control.
Explore One Aurora II Flat Black 114mm Slow Motion AZ Mount Telescope and ok one?
It’s probably alright for a ten year old or so. Lots of plastic.
would this be a better one ? Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Telescope

What do you think about bresser aurora 114mm? My daughter wants a telescope for Xmas. She's 10 and been asking since 7.
What do you think about Celestron Cometron Firstscope for kids?
Good for toddlers, can see the moon with help from parents.
Can you please give me a link to the celestron 102 the Exact one you prefer for kids and beginners it pulls up different kind and a little confusing I’m ready to purchase asap thanks
Do u know where the celestial Omni can be purchased? I don’t have a Costco membership. Thanks
As far as I know, only Costco had it at sub $200 price points.
Hello, where can I buy your book? Do you have a direct page?
The best is to get the books on Amazon, search “50 things to see with a telescope - kids” or “learn to stargaze for kids”
The astromaster 70 fails the tests. How about the Nat Geo 102mm at Costco?
also Skywatcher Heritage 130p = $235 @ b&h with $40 holiday discount. Lots of aperture for the price.
What about the celestron starsense explorer dob
Please let me know thanks
Great scope. Have you seen my video on that one?
Dave Trott is putting a link to this video in his "Unusual Toy Telescopes" videos!
Nice!
Hello, I was wondering if the Explore FirstLight 114mm Newtonian Telescope with Twilight Nano Mount - FL-N114500TN meets your standards for a beginner? Looking for a telescope for my 10 year old. Thank you!
My 8 and 8 year olds love that scope!
Is a celestron dx 130az or 102az a good choice? Star sense seems cool but worried now about quality
Yes. The 130 needs collimation, the 102 should be good to go out of the box.
GALAXY TRACKER 525 SMART TELESCOPE is that one ok for kids and adults? Thank you
No, that would not function as a telescope. It fails all 5 tests (and it fails by a massive margin).
You might want to look at the Orion Skyscanner, a telescope that passes all these tests at around the same price point.
I got hawkko brand telescope is able to be use as planet looker
For sure. Take a look at Jupiter tonight.
Thanks did not know
would you prefer a telescope with a go-to mount for an absolute beginner in astronomy?
As long as you have a budget of about $1000, (ideally $2000). Otherwise it’s best to invest in aperture.
GOTO mount is great for beginners, if an experienced person sets it up every time ;) Buy a Celestron StarSense Explorer - works great, and very easy to use

Hi! I found this: Celestron 114AZ-SR Smartphone Ready Reflector Telescope on sale $100 . Yes or no ? Thank you in advance 😊
I would not buy it. I find those mounts are like a vacuum cleaner for fun.
@@LearnToStargaze thank you for the tip 🤩
My first telescope is celestorn astroMaster 60mm even though it’s not 100mm but to me as 7 year old the moon looks fantastic and even though I can’t see the Jupiter colour bands I can see the moons and because I don’t have a dad because he died so I learned it by myself but it’s super easy to use just follow the light or use the red dot finder but because of my little brother it broke but hey if you got understanding kid it’s perfect and cheapest but hey that my opinion
Sounds like you’re off to a great start!
The Celestron 22065 Astro Master 102AZ Refractor?
It’s okay. I wish it had slow motion controls like the Omni 102AZ, or the Nat Geo 102, or the skywatcher 102 (they all use about the same lens), but if it’s priced around $150 or so then it’s an acceptable alternative for a beginner telescope.
We have got a Clememtoni Nasa telescope, and so far i was not able how to use it
That scope needs a better mount and a replacement finder. See my video “how to use any telescope”.
For the Dob, you’d want to add a red dot finder, and you’d need a laser collimator ($20) to check the mirrors (an easy process), but these are both really great scopes: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802897122-USE/sky_watcher_s11600_classic_150p_6_traditional.html
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802903899-USE/celestron_22481_starsense_explorer_130mm_f_5.html
Thank you so much for your reply! I like the looks of the one in the second link! I’m not sure what you mean by adding a red dot finder and laser collimator for this one? I’m extremely new to this stuff haha
Celestine Omni AZ 102 / f6.5 refactor?
I like it! I use that one in several videos.
is the celestron powerseeker 80eq any good? if not, whats a telescope that is better but under $200?
No, the mount is the biggest issue, as it does not function the way it is supposed to function. Much better telescopes would be the Omni 102, or the Nat Geo 102 (from Costco, generally in store, not online), these are generally below $200 USD. The Z100 or Orion SkyScanner 100 if it's for a kid. If I were you, I'd pick up a used scope from B&H, like this: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802896095-USE/sky_watcher_s10100_startravel_102mm_f_4_9_az.html
