Warhammer 40k is a bit like star wars but a totally different animal. It is its own universe with tons of novels, board games and video games centered around it. I highly reccomend Bricky's vid on Warhammer 40k lore if you want to learn more
Yeah made by one huge fan like myself but with talent, games workshop the creators of warhammer struck him down and gave him an ultimatum, basically “work for us or we remove your video” and he chose the better option and this animation is now on games workshop version of Disney plus “warhammer+”. As much as I hate games workshop for what they do to fan animators I support the creators decision to use his gift and love for warhammer to get that baaaaaaaaggg
You can make fan animations but when youre making money off of another companys ip, theyre going to put a stop to it as any company on this planet would do. If you started a company and someone was using your product to make money, would you just sit back and let it happen? The whole "gw is an evil conglomerate" trope is so tired. Theyre a relatively small company (for an international company) that was protecting their flagship property. They even went above and beyond and hired the biggest talents.
for all their faults, Games workshop protects their ip's fiercely. Which is something that we very much need in recent years, way too many franchises have been ruined by greed. Then there's games workshop which will get mad at you if you slightly fuck up some armor design, as they did with very slightly wrong kneepads in spacemarine 2 haha
@@augustusguap228 It also hasn't prevented several objectively terrible 40k based video games being made. :P But that's probably also a reason they're so protective of the IP.
24:02 Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes, yes like Astartes fan film) are generically modified 2.5 meters tall (even more) super soldiers of humanity in 40k (40 thousand A. C.) they live and fight for hundreds of years and considered by the rest of mankind as the Angels of Death (the God-Emperor of Mankind's angels). The lore for 40k are among the most well written and detailed with THOUSANDS of novels and codexes (the main cycle of "prequel" 30k story of Horus Heresy is like 100 novels total). If you want to dive into this rabbit whole - by all mean do it. I've read over 200 novels in 20+ years. "In the darkness a blind man is the best guide. In an age of Madness look to the madman to show the way." (c) one of 40k epic quote. There are dozens of fan and official animations (mostly epic trailers for games and 40k rules editions like you watch in the ending of this video) almost as good as Astartes (mb we get Astartes II in the future someday) and Amazon Prime is about to make 40k mainstream in 2 project, first one is Henry Cavills (yes, Witcher and Superman is a hardcore 40k fan for decades) 40k cinematic universe + in the new anthology "secret level" one of 15 short series would be about space marines (you could watch trailer - it's just like "love, death and robots" but for videogames). P. S. and you watched the low quality version of necrons (green beams Egypt style space terminators) vs sisters of battles (nuns in space in power armor) and space marines - there are a god damn "rusty" filter on the videos to prevent copyright strikes. I could suggest you dozens of such videos in original quality.
2:14 "I get the feeling that if i get into this rabbit hole I'm never coming out." I jumped in feet first in 1987 and I haven't regretted it for a second. Welcome aboard!
I’m 32 years in and I can’t get out. I thought I’d grow out of it, but the lore is so compelling. I don’t play anymore but I still have a few of my prize painted minis and I watch at least 1-2 lore videos every day. Plus, it’s been amazing seeing all of the new brothers and sisters joining the fight since SM2 came out.
9:24 The reason they did not hesitate a second is that in the Warhammer universe, Psychers like that poor sod, when corrupted by the warp can end up ripping open and "turn" into a warp portal. And the Warp is essentially Hell mixed with pure eldritch chaos that is beyond our comprehension, kinda. Which would be VERY BAD. As in potentially galaxy (if not greater) wide ramifications.
It's not. It never is. It never will be. Never ever get your hopes up because the expectations will never be met. Better to be pessemistic and be plesantly supprised.
The real issue is that Amazon or really any other large media organization can’t help themselves but make what would otherwise be entertainment a form of propaganda That’s why it won’t be
Never finansially support Games workshop. Find either thirdparty and pay less, or get your own 3d printer, 3d scanner and make your own. Probably gonna be cheaper in the long run too.
The Astartes that you watched was an edited one, the series of clips following that where they kept switching between MCs was from a series called the Pariah Network (I think) and it was put out by Games WorkShop (who own WH40K) but its from a paid subscription site (or RUclips channel maybe?). Anyways it's meant to be a "sequel" of sorts to the final trailer that you watched and it was made to promote the release of the 9th edition of WH40K's table top game. The big fella's are Space Marines aka the Emperor's Angels of Death, the ladies in the black armor are the Sister's of Battle and their faith in the God Emperor is so strong they're occasionally able to pull of actual miracles. Last the robot dudes are Necrons, aliens that made a bad deal 60 million years ago and all ended up with their minds trapped in robotic shells. They decided to take a 60 million year long nap to outlast some enemies and now their back to conquer the galaxy that they think belongs to them. Anyhow welcome to a rabbit hole that goes back to the late 1980's.
11:15 "looks like hell" Not wrong. Maybe one of the most genius dark bits of the lore is that in 40k hyperspace, the psychic collective unsconscious, and hell are all one and the same. It's called the Warp.
@@SevTT 1: if it was the Yu'vath it would ABSOLUTELY be the warp. A key part of their premise is that their technology started integrating the warp at around the equivalent stage as the one where humans developed the bow and arrow. 2: It's not Yu'Vath. Creator said in interview that he was aiming for something original and didn't realize it would resemble obscure Yu'Vath lore. 3: It sure as hell is the warp. The entity within the orb drags the space marines into the immaterium with him because he's trying to use them as decoys against warp predators, a desperation tactic ("impossible, we'll never survive") that immediately fails. The Space Marines likely arrive in the location within the warp their target was trying to return to. Judging by the glimpses of the future that poor inquisition psyker experienced, it won't end well for them.
I remember hearing somewhere that the eye-lenses on a Space Marine's helmet aren't actually eye-holes. They're a series of cameras behind a colored lens projecting to a screen inside the helmet. That way the entire face can be covered in a layer of armor instead of having little weak points like that. The 'explosion' you saw I think was actually the camera lenses freaking out as they were getting crushed by the psyker's telekinetic powers. If you look close, you can see a bunch of red circles wiggling around in there once the lens breaks. XD
amazing to watch a new guy watching 40k content, im 20+ years into this and still going, welcome brother! and yes there are different types of "warhammers" hahah this actually made my day!
I hadn't noticed before, but the narrator (Emma Gregory) for the last trailer has one of the main voice parts in the amazing Ciaphas Cain audiobooks as Valhallan Imperial Guard officer, Jenit Sulla. In the books, she's later told to be the first female Guard officer to reach the rank of General. She has a great voice. She's also Minthara's VA in Baldur's Gate 3.
That guy who got his head popped like a watermelon was been given mercy, this universe being possessed is basically slow soul death and a demon manifesting in real space, not a massive problem for a squad of marines or even one, but normal humans can be the entire ship being lost. If that happens in the warp, the way they travel, that means the "warp shield" failed and everyone is about to have a really bad day.
A demonic possesion is a huge f-ing problem for every one, even for the marines. That's why they don't f around when you got suspected demonic possesions. You deal with it fast and decisive, and don't leave any room what so ever for it to fester and get a hold.
I don't normally like reaction videos but this one was great. This is the reaction I expect from people seeing Astartes for the first time, going into it knowing very little about it. Its clear you enjoyed every second of it and all the questions show your genuine curiosity. See you in the rabbit hole.
3:15 This is one of my favourite segments because it's such a cool example of the sheer tactical acumen of Space Marines. He exchanges a few shots with the heavy gunner at first, but even Astartes armour can't stand up to that kind of concentrated lasgun fire for long, so he covers his retreat with a flash grenade to blind the gunner's optics. He draws his plasma pistol, steps back out, and fires BLIND through the cloud left behind by his grenade's detonation. He can't see through it either, but through that short exchange of fire, he MEMORISED THE GUNNER'S POSITION. An effective counter-strategy to an enemy ambush, devised on the spot and executed to perfection in SECONDS. That's how good Space Marines are at waging war.
Really, this is one of the closest depictions of lore accurate Marines. Nothing else made so far, including the GW animations, come even close to showing their superhuman abilities that are regularly described in the lore. This one does come kinda close though.
For the ones after Astartes, the ones without the narrator were clips from a streaming miniseries they made called Pariah Nexus. The one with the narration was a trailer for an edition of the tabletop game, taking place earlier in the same campaign.
The bald woman and her armored sisters are Adepta Sororitas. the owl visor looking helmet is iconic to the Sororitas. The red eyed black space marine is a Salamander, the bestest bros of all Astartes.
Welcome to the fandom brother, we're always happy to welcome new members lol. Warhammer 40k is such a hard pitch for someone new because outside of these cutscenes and fan animations we haven't had many good adaptations of WH40K into visual media. The books are fantastic, but good luck trying to get someone new into a fandom with books lmao 😂
Funny you said that about getting lost in it after this video, happened to me after I watched it the first time. Didnt know anything about Warhammer, now I think its cool as hell.
i love how both the marines and chaos cultists they are fighting are both being intelligent about how they fight the cultists set up ambush poitns and chokepoints and make use of machine guns and anti tank weapons and try to funnel the space marines in a couple at a time so they dont have to fight the whole group at once and the marines also are smart about it anticipating they would be ambushed so one of them goes to counter the ambusher with the autocannon and they take turns laying down suppressive fire on the psykers when one of them runs out of ammunition its good to see the enemy being smart about it and the protagonists still win because they are not only smart but also generally more powerful that it doesnt matter how well thought out the cultists defense was
The fade in between scenes is where the different parts were released in separate videos. Love seeing you react and find fascination with the 40K lore. Keep digging down the rabbit hole!
I've only just connected that the VA of the sister of battle towards the end is the same as Minthara from Baldur's Gate 3. Such an iconic, gravely voice that is a perfect fit for the Warhammer 40k universe.
Small explanation: The big dudes in armor are space marines, also known as the adeptus astartes. Genetically modified super soldiers, stronger, faster, smarter, better in every way than ordinary human. They are the elite force of the human empire but their numbers are quite limited. Since they are quite rare they are known as the emperors angels of death. They are also the posterboys of the franchise, which is why you see them basically everywhere. The ladies in armor are also soldiers but they are in service to the church. Since the church isn't allowed to have "men at arms" they simply armed women. Battlenuns. Super fanatical religious zealots whose prayers actually work sometimes. They live to burn and cleanse the universe of everything that isn't human and/or doesnt believe in the god emperor. The robot dudes are the remnants of an species that once ruled the galaxy, got tricked by some stargods, then they enslaved the same stargods and went to sleep for several million years to let the galaxy heal itself after a war of unimaginable proportions. Really hard to kill, most powerful technology in the game. All of this is part of an constantly evolving table top game from the eighties, where you collect, build and paint miniatures and lead them to battle against other nerds who do the same. Theres dozends of factions and there's one core rule to everything warhammer: Everything is crazy over the top. EVERYTHING. To give you an Idea: The normal soldier, of which there are uncountable billions, is armed with laserrifles that basically never jam, are powerful enough to just tear away limbs, ammunition isnt a problem while also beeing really precise. Those rifles are the WEAKEST weapon in the franchise, commonly referred to as flashlights.
That girl with the great narration voice you mentioned also played Minthara for bg3. Also others but those two popped in my head when I heard minthara thefirst time after playing Inqisitor and using Adeptus Sororitas.
You could make a whole movie like this, with no talking just this stuff and it’ll be able to tell any entire story and people will think it was none stop fire
The first story you watched was about 13 minutes long. It was made over several years, and released in 5 parts, with each taking the creator several months to make. Most got longer or more complex than the one before, as he got better at using the tools he was using. It's insane how much work some fans will put into a world they love.
This is Warhammer: 1 month ago "I know if I go down this rabbit hole Im going to get lost" I Finally Understand: 2 weeks ago These Factions are HORRIFIC: 9 Days ago This connects ALL the dots: 5 days ago He fell down the rabbit hole. Welcome to Warhammer, Brother!
There are several videos on RUclips which explains this video in details for dummies like me. The video is 100% full of references to the Warhammer 40k world, what happens and why, analysis frame by frame, what that sphere is, who protects the spheres, what weapons the space marines they use and why. It worth to watch. Also to answer you other question, in Warhammer 40K everything is over the top, everything is grim down and everything is at war.
Warhammer’s got an ocean of lore. From funny engineers who only remember how the machines work through religious rituals, to genetically engineered super soldiers, to improbably lucky officers getting into and out of trouble on a regular basis in the funniest ways, to weird demon cults, to space bugs and space elves, and a ten foot tall black guy spitting the funniest one liner before beating the shit out of his crazy brother with a hammer, to mushroom men with the mannerisms and mentality of British soccer hooligans whose machines work on troll logic, there’s a little something for everyone in the grim dark future.
Also, I subbed and liked every video I watched. I need more positive content in my line up. Thanks for taking the time out to make these. FOR THE EMPEROR
Welcome to the community! Lemme answer a couple questions for you! The big guys in the armour are called Space Marines, or Adeptus Astartes. Thats what the orb said to them when they arrived. The two guys with the masks are Psykers, and powerful ones at that. They're probably the leaders of that cult. The ship they attack is filled with some kinds of chaos cultists, likely Tzeentch cultists if I had to guess. The orbs seem to have some sort of daemons in them, again likely Tzeentch daemons. Tzeentch is the changer of ways, one of the four chaos gods, who's all about trickery, plans, deceiving etc, and he loves psykers. That's why the one orb tricks the Astartes to come in close, and then grabs them. The dude with the cloak is a Sanctioned Psyker, i.e. a psyker who is officially trained and monitored by the Imperium. He's attempting to connect to the orb, as psykers get their power from the same place daemons do, i.e. the warp, but they didn't reckon on how strong the daemons were. The entrapped orb daemon basically uploads itself into the sanctioned psyker, and he becomes a Daemonhost. That's why they ice him so quickly instead of just imprisoning him or trying to help him, if you leave that too long it could easily become something you can't get rid of, like a Lord of Change or something, which would very easily kill every poor bastard on the ship. As for the second thing, that's a show on Warhammer+, its an official project called Pariah Nexus. The marine in that is also an Astartes, but hes from one of the original chapters, the Salamanders. They're fighting the Necrons, who are ancient robot people with primo tech. And the woman is a Sister of Battle, she's not Astartes. Astartes are inhumanly augmented, SoB are mostly base human, with some smaller upgrades but nothing near what Astartes get. The quote you picked out from the Salamander was "Into the Fire of Battle, unto the Anvil of War". It's the Salamander Battle Cry, they're all about forging and making their own stuff. Also her thing about hearing an angel is kinda a double meaning. One, because the SoB are hyper religious, so she may well have been hearing angels as she died. And the second meaning is that the Astartes are often called "The Emperor's Angels" or "Angels of Battle". So Sa'Kan (the Salamander) would be considered an angel by most people. And yes he does look like Bautista. Astartes often have a sort of pituitary gland, steroid kinda look to them due to all the drugs and augments they get given to turn them from human into something more, so they often look like people who use a lot of steroids, like pro wrestlers or bodybuilders, or who have issues with their pituitary gland. Welcome to the community!
The First movie was AFAIK from one guy in i cave, The second movie was from a short movie by games workshop for their streaming Portal and the last Clip was just a commercial for the 10th Edition
Forget the promise of peace and progress, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. For in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
Bro, welcome! Warhammer is for anyone and everyone!! It’s literally the COOLEST lore/hobby that you can find! Some great channels that can help you get into this super fun/badass world is Weshammer and MajorKill. They give you bite size pieces of lore and explain what’s going on in an entertaining way.
So after the Astartes fan made thing, Everything after that with the guy in green and the sister is from some kind of animated series or miniseries Games Workshop has on their own website I guess. Never seen it but i've seen clips shared around. The green Space Marine is from the Salamanders legion (Space Marines are split into different legions, with a Primarch they're derived from), and the women in power armor are called Sisters of Battle. Not space marines themselves but part of the church basically and very powerful in their own right, just not with the massive 1-2 tonne armor and genetic augments Space Marines/ Astartes have. The angels they speak of are the Astartes/ Space marines, the Angels of Death
@@theredpillneo2296 There was a teaser that came out a while back but so far there have been no progress updates, utterly radio silent. But given how the first animation also took years to make I wouldn't be surprised if it's taking around the same amount of time to produce. Sure, Syama Pedersen is working with GW now and might have more resources and maybe even a team (speculation) but the scale of the project might have grown in proportion with the capabilities.
The one where you asked if he was human, space marines go through a lot of modifications to make them what they are including at a genetic level to make them more like the primarch of their chapter. In more recent lore (like, changed some time between me playing in the late 90’s and today) that space marine chapter in green, the Salamanders, were changed to all have ash black skin and red eyes. Also the “I hear an angel” is because the Space Marines are referred to by the church as the Emperor’s Angels of Death

5:10 what “blew up” was the cracking of the helmets lenses, if his bud was like 2 seconds late that marines head would have been paper thin
@@xxchaos315xx6 boot licking lvl max
for all their faults, Games workshop protects their ip's fiercely.
But that's probably also a reason they're so protective of the IP.

1:30 In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.

It's not in the warp, AFAIK. The Astartes video pulls from some -deep- and mostly-forgotten 40K lore.
XD
When more people react to the god tier Warhammer 40k mythos. It gives me Ork levels of stupid happy.
amazing to watch a new guy watching 40k content, im 20+ years into this and still going, welcome brother! and yes there are different types of "warhammers" hahah this actually made my day!
She's also Minthara's VA in Baldur's Gate 3.
i Died when he said there is different types of warhammers XD
Where is war there is a hammer-horus heresy
5:10 no explosion, the outer covering for the optical lenses in his helmet cracked from the pressure. He got squeezed hard.
For humans, this is a bloodbath. For the space marines, just a regular Tuesday.
Such a treat to see you enjoy this short for the first time. Looking forward to your other Warhammer videos I see you made!

Lmao he said the meme "they are a different type of warhammers"
Syama's Astartes made a fan out of me too, no regrets.
It's like Werner Herzog said: "Every (bug) man for himself and God(s) against all".
A belated welcome to the deep well of lore that is Warhammer 40K, brother!
