Isabel Mestres does a marvelous turn as the child-princess with an ice-covered soul and hatchet in hand, but it is Valentina Cortese's reptilian Herodias that makes this scene unforgettable. The ambivalent little twitch of her mouth at the end of Salome's dance scarcely dares to register satisfaction for fear of the evil she has unleashed. Each the three principal players has his own unholy moment of consummation here, but the queen's is creepiest. Cortese as Herodias is unsurpassably corrupt.
Her biggest mistake was asking her mother what she should ask for. I don't think she really wanted John The Baptist's head but her mother did. I think if truth be told she wanted something else like a place in the kingdom or even a husband and was horrified when she saw the head and thinking "What have I done?". Her mother wanted John The Baptist dead because he was preaching against divorce and remarriage which Herod and her mother were in which The Bible calls adultery.
Maurice Jarre is an amazing music composer. It intrigues me too much where he could search for ancient music in Herod's times. Specially in the seventies when it was no any Internet available, R.
Es una danza preciosa, de todas las películas de Jesús en que he visto a Salomé bailar, a mi gusto es la mejor...💕... excelente película y la música es mágica ❤️👌🤠....Saludos desde México 🇲🇽😊
According to my dance teachers, Salome's dance was a belly dance. Likely NOT the modern Belly dance, but a dance for childbirth and for women only. It was considered risque' back then, taboo. That is by my teacher's opinion. Serena, RIP, was one of them
molarmama32 A dance for childbirth? As in a dance that was supposed to instigate labor, or a dance to perform to encourage pregnancy? I've never heard of such a thing.
Flocks of Foxes Well, I do not claim to know everything either. It is a part of the history of the dance, which some claim goes back to ancient Egypt. There are differences of opinion on this matter.
Wait a minute. Salome was not only Herod's stepdaughter she was also his niece. She was the daughter of Herodias and Philip, who was Herod's half brother. BTW Herodias was also their half sister!!!
@@alexandredominique5176 You are correct. Cleopatra was married to her brother Ptolomey whom she had killed in a sense as well as her sister. Cleopatra used her charms and looks to get what she wanted but from what I've read she wasn't that pretty.
This is the greatest Salome dance scene I have ever seen. It's very believeable. Salome is cold and callous (in essence her dance is a murder), yet seductive in a dirty way. Herod walks into the trap as he is completely intoxicated. Fantastic sequence.
True. And have you noticed the deep eye contact between King Herod and Salome ? It was so intense... for sure, something was going on between those two !
Christ Abel Mouangou Yeap, though I believe it was mainly teasing on her behalf. Which made herod more vulnerable :-) This is a brilliant sequence, and it quite difficult to shoot. I've seen many Salome dance scenes, which were quite embarassing to be honest.
they dramatized and intensified it. dance if meant to be graceful and by it's simplicity, he could be attracted to it. you don't need to add fuel to this fire.
Also at the same time it was premeditated murder and Salome fully realises that. That's why I love how seductive yer very cold and fully in control she is in this dance. Brilliant sequence.
Salome was at least 15 years old. The age to be appointed over a kingdom was 15. Herod would have never promised half of his kingdom to a 12 years old girl, it would have been sen as ridiculous and not a word from a king.
Isabel Mestres, a Salome incomparable, much better than Brigid Bazlen or Gabriella Pessione (who were not a disgrace), even more than Rita Hayworth (an incomparable living legend, which is saying a lot). 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 PS: He came! 2:39 🤣
At 1:55, the music and the moves she's going into remind me of exactly an Indian raindance to a drumbeat. Then, at 2:54, she looks as though she's an animal coming at him to attack him to shreds. I thought this was unbecoming and not at all seductive. Wouldn't he be afraid of her at that point, rather than lured by her? Other than that, the slow intro of the dance is more alluring before it goes into the wildness. I especially love the shimmery sparkly sounding instrument that embellishes her hand so slowly sweeping the sheer curtain aside.

Here's a question that I've struggled with because it's not real clear in the Bible, but was Salome truly evil or was she being used as a tool of her mother's vendetta against John the Baptist?!?
She is an awful dancer. And the dance is not sexy at all. Want to see a really good Salome dance? Take a look at the one from the movie "King Of Kings". That one is sensual and seductive befitting the story.
All she did was walk around, aggressively hug the air, twirl, and head bang a little, then fall to the ground. No flips or anything impressive at all. I've been so spoiled by The Chosen, man lol.
@Hugh Jorgan Yes, true. He already knew his plans for John the Baptist. Some people just cant handle the truth so rather than listen they had him beheaded. She knows she was wrong. He was sleeping with his brothers wife thus Solome is his niece.
I don't think the true story of Salome's dance is told because it would be too pornagraphic knowing the characture of Antipas. He lusted sfter her and she teased him.
A scene rightly not too sensual (because it's a movie about Christ), but it has something exquisitely psychedelic! 👍

Neither........the movements in this form of dace strengthen the muscles and loosen the joints involved in childbirth hopefully making it easier.
Yes, it was a bellydance. It's considered by many to be the first recorded striptease.

The most chaste Salome dance in history!
and probably the most historically accurate
Christopher Plummer as Herod Antipas is so attractive, I certainly wouldn't mind being Salome

I think incest wasn't a big deal in ancient times, pharoahs would sleep with their own siblings years ago.
