  • Germans enjoy sections of unrestricted motorways so why not the USA? Although car safety has increased significantly, our speed limits have not. Should we be able to drive as fast as we want? What would need to change for Americans to join the Germans in legalizing high speed.

living in the Netherlands (next to Germany) the reality is a lot of the autobahn has been restricted in the past decade. for a big part, max speed is now 130km/h. In the Netherlands the national speed limit has been set to 100 km/h recently... it should also be noted that if you cause an accident driving outrageously fast in Germany, you will be undressed at the spot so to say. and like mentioned in the video, lane etiquette is very important and enforced here in Europe as a whole. if you pass someone on the right here people will freak out.

Americans may not be the most skilled drivers in the world, but as a general rule, they're definitely one of the most respectful and sensible out there. Still one of the best countries to drive. I currently live in Brazil and most people here are mindless morons behind the wheel, total dimwits. They have no regard for others whatsoever and are rude as hell. Even though the traffic rules are european oriented it's a fucking mess, tailgating is a national pastime, common sense? Blinkers? Forget it. Just cut off everybody and be a selfish prick, do what you gotta do to get where you have to, even if it means being a total asshole to everyone around you, as brazen as it gets. In fact, it's so bad that they have speed cameras every 100 or so meters on major highways within city limits so that drivers don't haul ass every fucking time.

I think part of the problem is that people in America rely on cars much more than for example, in Europe where public transport is more common. Therefore it has to be easier to get a driving license in America, otherwise people won't be able to get to work, do shopping etc.

As a German I feel this is actually a great analogy. There is always some left party which wants to introduce speed limits on the autobahn, but its way too ingrained in german culture/history and the car lobby is strong. Very similar to what is happening in the US in regards to the second amendment i guess, however to me US gun culture is totally foreign and weird, i'd never want that for Germany.

@@derbigpr500 You're right and wrong on this. Gun culture in America is not a remnant of the wild west. It's a remnant of the Revolutionary War. The thinking was that the people should run the country. They believed that a *true* balance of power meant that the populace had the same firepower as the government to keep them in check. During those times, it involved rifles loaded from the muzzle. Obviously, things have changed since then. Now, the civilian population has nowhere near the firepower that the government has; but they still have guns. They still believe in a Second Amendment because they believe that without it, the rest will be eroded away eventually... This scares certain people. Granted, we still have people who abuse those rights. It makes a bad name for all gun owners and the knee jerk reactionists begin to swarm.
The same could happen with America's car culture. You'll have the majority who are mature enough to handle unrestricted speed limits in areas where it would be appropriate. You'll also have people who will flock to these areas and will give it a bad name (teenagers, drunks, youtubers, etc.). There will be some accidents and unfortunate deaths. How long would it take for the knee jerk reaction to begin? Not long.
My personal opinion: The speed limits are in place because insurance lobbyist groups keep them in place. Think of their business. It makes sense. I personally think there should be an unrestricted corridor along the East coast, West coast, and definitely across the country. I'm all about freedom...
As for guns, I own a few. None of them have ever killed anyone on their own. I follow the rules and abide by the law. We have good laws. Most of the gun crime in this country happens because the laws already on the books aren't enforced as they should be.

    • @lsswappedcessna

hmmmm... Guns and high speed driving. This is the only modification to the second amendment I'd support other than the bold, capitalization and underlining of *_"SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED."_*
All yee-haws aside, America tends to be a melting pot, and many of us like to drive fast anyways, but there isn't always a safe place to do so. An autobahn-like road, that's as straight as it could possibly be in many sections with nice, steady, wide banked curves to help us not crash into a power pole at high speeds would help satisfy our desires not only for a fast commute, but for driving really fast in general. Americans will have to learn not to be stupid behind the wheel first and our politicians will have to learn to not be helicopter parents who think that their stupid regulations help when really they just waste time and money, if not even hurt. Given that people learn to drive, and politicians can pull their heads out of their own asses and lose the power fantasy for at least a second, America could realistically have some of our interstate highways stripped of their speed limit. Especially in places like Arizona where there's literally nothing in between cities aside from red rocks, sand, and the occasional cactus or tumbleweed.

From what I remember it was supposed to be temporary due to gas shortages. Then, for whatever reason, they kept it in place for decades. Today, we should certainly be able to increase speeds closer to 100 mph. Our cars are perfectly capable of doing this safely. However, it would require vastly better training for everyone.

I am a 17year old from germany (and have my license) and I gotta Comment on this one. In Germany, there are parts of the autobahn (70%) that are unrestricted and I think this is right. I would wish you petrolheads in America the same, but I See Problems. Over here, it is Not easy to get your driving license and you are able to drive at the age of 17, and able to drive by yourself at 18! I think in America this is possible by the age of 16 so that is the first Problem. Another apect we have here in Germany is the tüv, which controls that every car on the road is safe and you have to get your car controlled by the tüv to legally drive your car. It is very strict so it is very annoying when it comes to tuning and I am kind of jealous on you americans because of that :). And the last thing we have here in Germany and you dont is the "rechtsfahrgebot". It means that you have to drive in the right lane and you can only overtake left. By that, the traffic is much easier to control and to observe and there is Not so much chaos. So if america would focus on safety by implementing These things, it is possible to have unrestricted highways. But anyways, in my mind it is just a matter of Time until we have a speed limit in Germany due to environmental parties which are just dumb if you ask me. I hope that someone is interested in what i wrote. Have a nice day

The roads are quite horrible too, Idk how people feel safe driving so fast on such terrible roads. It probably explains why the shoulders are completely littered with blown out tires and accident debris in philly. During the day people drive slower but thats just cause of traffic due to construction and car accidents.

Montana held out on having any speed limits on rural roads as long as possible, but when they were finally forced to they simply made speeding tickets extremely cheap, as low as $5, added no points to a drivers license, and the infraction was named for what it is: a wasting energy violation.

So many people in my area have the mindset "I've just gotta get around this guy!", whip around someone, and get behind someone else barely 3 cars ahead of them. I've had this idea for a while of an "advanced driving test" that prioritizes safety and ability to judge driving situations.
Coming into a congested area on the highway when going over 120? Safely slow down in time to match the average speed before trying to pass anyone.
See a corner coming up and you can't judge the appropriate turning speed? Don't give er the beans.
Some sort of advanced common sense test could be taken by enthusiasts or others who "respect the drive" to give people who pass the test more freedom with the speeds they choose.

    • @user-hr2zy7ct8h
      @user-hr2zy7ct8h 2 года назад +2

@@bury_the_elite65294 That's the least of your problems. Driving school and law enforcement can stop people from causing traffic jams on on-ramps, that's not a big issue. People in Germany are driving crazy and we have stupid drivers on the road just like every other country. We don't have as much careless drivers, not because people WANT TO pay attention, but because people have a survival instinct. When you switch lanes without looking and suddenly a car flys by going 150+ barely avoiding to hit you, you will think about switching lanes without looking twice next time.
The difference is our law enforcement actually goes after people causing a traffic jam on an on-ramp, people swerving or driving carelessly instead of going after people who're going 60 in a 55. So the simple solution for that are laws and driving schools. However there's no solution for the fact that you need to get millions of vehicles off of your roads or make sure their license plates show that they aren't allowed to go on the imaginary no-speedlimit highways. No solution for 50+ yr old drivers going to driving school, it's not just harder to learn when you're old and they won't just refuse but they can't change their habits after doing the same thing for 30 years if they wanted to. Same thing with 16-17 yr olds, they all need to get off the road.
And by the way nobody has touched on it so let me tell you: within the first 2 years of acquiring your license you're basically on a trial period and will get f***ed for doing ANYTHING wrong AT ALL. Going 12 mph to fast? Go back to driving school and pay a huge fine or have this trial period extended for another 2 years and pay a huge fine. Running a red light 1 sec after it turned red? Back to driving school, give us all your money. Passing a car on the highway on the right? Give us your money and license. Endangering others on the road in any way while a cop is watching? License and money gone. You literally aren't even allowed to drink a beer and then ride an unmotorized bicycle. Running a red light on a bicycle? You monster!
I could probably continue for a while but I think you get the point. 18 year olds as well as 30 year olds who freshly got their license are probably the most careful drivers on our roads. They will literally go slower than the speedlimit, they will block traffic if traffic is moving faster than the speedlimit. They will check their mirrors because they've seen how fast others go and it's scary. Meanwhile in the US you have 16 year olds driving V8 sportscars who couldn't care less about traffic rules.

USA (and Canada) are huge countries and to make sure all the cars on the roads are capable of driving at high speeds safely is a very big undertaking. The great thing about German roads is they’re engaging most of the time. You don’t get the temptation to get distracted. Always focused because you’re driving at the speed that fits you.
Unrestricted autobahn where you always overtake someone while comfortably driving 160-180kmh. On all kinds of country roads with 100kmh, but some are almost like autobahn and there it’s annoying, while others nobody bothered putting a limit there so it’s the standard 100kmh too though no one would drive that fast there. Like on some forest roads you can totally race the car and not even go over the speed limit. And the cities are often narrow so you have to be focused too.

Dude you're 1000000000% right. I live in NJ and we have the WORST drivers. So let me try to break it down for some people. These are the different types of drivers we have.
1: Slow people in the left lane
2: Cars who ride your ass when you're in the middle lane doing 5mph above the speed limit and they have ample amount of time, space, and opportunities to just go around you but they stay on your ass so YOU have to move, from the middle lane
3: Following someone who is going below the speed limit, you're traveling behind them for a good 10 seconds to notice they're going slow, so you switch to the left lane, or the available lane to pass and they notice that and they SPEED up so you won't pass them.
4: You're in the right lane, about to take your exit which is about 1/8 mile away, the car behind you is so impatient, he/she switches lanes really quick, guns it to go around you, just to take the exit before you. Mind you you're going the speed limit or 5mph above, and they can't wait.
5: People that signal when they're already half way into your lane, and they merge when they're about 10 feet away from you. (You're supposed to signal FIRST, then within 2-3 seconds switch lanes if it's clear. Not signal as you're halfway into my lane.)
6: People who don't signal at all.
7: Seeing people going fast in whatever lane they're at, then for some reason switch into your lane right in front of you but drop their speed by 10-15mph, making you have to hit the brakes, then switch lanes to go around that person resulting in #3 that i wrote above.
8: If you're in the middle lane, and you see an 18 wheeler in the right, and you're creeping up to that 18 wheeler, the person in the left lane will hang out by your rear 1/4 basically wanting to trap you in. Instead of speeding up because that's the left lane, he wants to go exactly the speed you're going, as you're creeping past the 18 wheeler on the right. As if they don't want you to have anywhere to go in case something happens, like a blown tire from the 18 wheeler etc. There's no escape route.
9: As you're cruising the highway peacefully, and as the roads have short sweeps, and bends etc, you get cars (always the left lane people) that follow the curves and sweeps of the highway but they ALWAYS, ALWAYS go over their lines, into your lane. As if they can't see their own lane, the curve is coming but both of their passenger side wheels are already in your lane, making you either hit the horn, or veer to the right a bit so they don't hit your car/mirror etc.
I can go on and on but these are most annoying. I feel like drivers have gotten worse since the pandemic started. I mean it was always bad but now, as people are staring to go back to work and traffic is forming again, people can't drive. It's like they're lost. Last second turns onto some block, never using a blinker. Getting into a lane to make an exit, then change their mind, then change their mind again and finally take their exit. All without using blinkers.
    I fucking HATE NJ drivers.

Number 2. While tailgating is dangerous, stop hogging the middle lane. Move right when not passing.
Number 8. The safe thing to do so that you don't get trapped is to match the 18 wheeler's speed while remaining behind them in the lane to their left and only accelerate to pass once the car in front of you is completely clear so that you can be completely clear.

I totally agree about the drivers getting worse since the pandemic. TIMES. and STILL got her license (she had to cheat using her phone to pass). I know people who have totaled three cars and people who have two dozen fender benders in two years of driving and are STILL ON THE ROAD. its insane. I feel its mostly younger people too, from the ages of 17-21, and on top of the just bad driving skills they have NO situational awareness. ALWAYS on their phones, ALWAYS drinking or eating something. Not reading signs, not using turn signals, Not checking mirrors, turning right from the LEFT TURN LANE, looking down at their phone when braking and almost rear ending you, drifting over the center line and edge lines on highways, on backroads, parking completely crooked blocking someone elses door in a parking lot. its god. awful. Ever since I started riding a motorcycle its gotten become even more immediate. And I feel its a pretty even 50-50 split in my generation specifically between the hell sent phone addicted menaces and genuine, thoughtful, and attentive drivers. At this point I just try to make it home safe whenever I'm on two wheels.

I'm just going to list out a couple of reasons why I think this can't happen safely in the US, at least without making significant changes in other areas as well.
    1. Requirements to get a license are far too low, and thus people are not sufficiently trained to be safe, responsible drivers.
    2. Vehicle inspection standards are too low in several states, resulting in very unsafe vehicles on the road, and far more breakdowns on the highway as a result.
    3. The condition of most Interstate highways in the US are very poor, the design of many of these highways is not appropriate for high speed, and the US is severely lacking when it comes to proper safety barriers along the sides of the road.
    4. As a whole, European cars are better designed to cope with high speeds, while cars for the American market are less capable.
The highway fatality rate in the US is double that of Germany, despite having far lower speed limits, making it very obvious that speed alone is not a major deciding factor in how safe a highway system is.

    • @robertmoschowsky9793
      @robertmoschowsky9793 3 года назад +10

I agree with most of your points but speed and fatalities aren’t necessarily connected. Roads that have lower speed limits can have higher fatalities because there is a greater differential of speed between the drivers that follow the law and the ones that don’t, with the added bonus of having people become bored and looking at phones or something else because the speed limit is set too low.

I think speeding is an easy way out for police, getting a number on a radar gun is impossible to fight but I would much rather them be policing poor driving at lower speeds. Doing 100mph or more on a good road (for smart drivers) is probably one of the safest places you can be because you are in the zone and fully concentrating. In my view being on your phone through town at 30mph is more dangerous.

The requirements to first get your license definitely need to get upped, the requirements now are laughable with how easy it is. We also need a more thorough inspection like how Europe and all has MOT inspections. I’ve seen too many cars that just looking at it drive by are unsafe. Smashed front bumpers flapping in the wind, rusted mufflers dragging underneath the car, broken underpanels etc. there’s so many cars that would be unsafe at an unrestricted speed limit let alone those types of cars are unsafe at the existing speed limits, especially for other people on the road. I’ve had a car in front of me, an underpanel flew off from under their car and hit my windshield, thankfully no damage. In order for unrestricted speed zones we would have to have many more requirements put in place first which as you said, would never happen

On the west coast in BC, there are never any inspections, unless you are pulled over, a police officer can order you to have your car inspected (usually reserved only for modified vehicles it seems).

Even so, the inspections are very relaxed in comparison to an MOT inspection and there’s loopholes such as if you know your car will fail inspection and you know someone who does inspections, they can turn a blind eye to things so you can pass. That happened with my car. The person I bought my car from was very dishonest and found major problems with my car (control arms were bad as well as major rust holes and the check engine light was unplugged from the gauge cluster) and he got it inspected from someone he knew and when it came for me to get it inspected, I had lots to fix in order for it to pass)

i was looking if somebody mentions the road safety checks of cars in europe. It's not just that (i can only speak for Germany and Austria here, don't know the exact regulations in the rest) the vehicles have to get checked by someone who is authorized by law to do these checkes either every year (Austria) or every 2 years (Germany) for road safety. If you modify certain things you most probably have to get that modification checked too and integrated in the paperwork, and only if it is regarded safe you will be allowed to drive the car on the road. I live in germany and we have unrestricted areas around my city (two lane autobahn) and you always have to be cautious about silly drivers switching lanes infront of you while you going 200km/h (135mph) but i love the rush of pushing my amg to its limit. The sound and the feeling is so rewarding. Not daily of course.
And lets be honest. Dumb and irresponsible racers wont even care about speedlimits. We get news about fatal accidents weekly due to too high speeds at restricted autobahn (or even in the city!!) or distraction via smartphone.
So, i am always for unrestricted areas where it is save to drive fast. Some autobahns are restricted at daytime and unrestricted at night, made possible by electronic speedlimit signs.
Btw the average speed on the left lane is usually at around 140-160km/h (100mph) which is not that much but very convenient for long trips.
Anyways, always take care of your sorroundings and be safe!

Generally it's 30 mph in residential areas, in Scotland we even have a 'Twenty's Plenty' speed limit for areas around schools etc which I absolutely agree with. The UK doesn't have a lot of insanely long stretches like in the US but on motorways (our version of highways) that are 3 or 4 lanes, they're built for high speed traffic so it's nuts to be limited to 70 mph!

Haven't finished watching it, but you hit the nail on the head with it being politicized. That's it. Reason many places still have 55mph or close to speed limits is because of the 70s. Speeding tickets. It brings in hundreds of millions of dollars for states. Want a perfect example, look no further then Virginia with it's million dollar mile. Look that up, it will piss you off.
It has nothing to do with safety. That's a secondary and tertiary concern. The first is money. Then we have these Karen's that are scared of fucking everything. Fighting against any and all derestrictions on our freedoms. And a lot of people agree with them, but not nearly as vocal.
Then it goes down to safety. Yes higher speeds go hand in hand with more traffic deaths. But better driver training would make the roads far safer than any law will. But that actually fixes the problem and they can't make nearly as much money doing it.
Money is the number 1 reason why most of those bullshit laws we have exist
