    You are absolutely correct... the 4th step or third shot drop is the toughest skill to master. Practicing this skill is so important. Thanks for your help and sharing! 👍

    Enjoy and appreciate your videos. Just curious as to why you spin your paddle so much while you're playing?

  • @mikefixac
    @mikefixac 2 года назад +3

    Big thanks for this. With my 3rd shot drops, I've been getting the ball high and dropping it short in the no volley zone. Then of course it sets up a big bounce and the opposing team more than likely would put the ball away. Hitting the drop to the no volley zone line makes more sense. I would guess what would be even better is to put top spin on the drop, barely clear the net and then land at the no volley zone line.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  2 года назад

      Yes, moving your drops closer to that NVZ line will help a ton!

    Great video as always Jordan. I think these skills are rapidly becoming what you need to be a 3.5+ player. The skill levels in general have gone up a lot in the past year and will continue to do in the next year, Time for the guidelines to be updated? I like to separate the 3rd shot drop and the defensive reset.. The defensive reset to me is the hardest shot to master and is a 4.0+ skill for sure. Third shot drops you generally have time and some control to make the shot, if you are taking the 3rd shot in the transition zone you are usually already in defense mode hence my thinking that one is a defensive reset shot, much tougher? Being on the baseline getting volley at from the opposition volley zone - toughest shot of all, again, with where the game is at is becoming a required shot to be 4.0+ these days.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  2 года назад

      Drops and resets are still the main shots you need to eclipse 4.0.
      Now for 4.5+, I’ll have to make another video.

    Jordan, how do you counter a 4th shot off your 3rd that is going to hit the NVZ line, but your tall opponent leans into the NVZ and taps it over the net? You have a long rush ( sr player speaking here ) to possibly keep it alive, only to have your desperation save slammed back at you.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  Год назад

      Tough one.
      First, I’d mix in a drive and drop.
      Second, you can purposely try shallower drops, and get ready to reset on your 5th.

  • @matthew354

    In the first drill I see you spin the paddle in your hands at the net after every shot. Why do you do that? Does it help you keep focus or keep hands soft?

    I always find your videos to be on point, and educational as they've helped me improve my game to which I'm extremely grateful. Out of curiosity, what level of a player are you? Say, 5.5 or 6, I presume? Also, will you ever do some clinic in the tri-State (DC, MD and VA) anytime soon? Much Mahalo!

    Is the paddle flip always clockwise? Is is also a timing mechanism? I use a skip step right before I swing as a timing mechanism when I am on the move and to also bleed off some momentum to slow down before starting the swing.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  2 года назад

      I actually never thought of that. Yes it’s always clockwise, and maybe it helps me in between shots !

    weird question but I noticed you use the Wilson Rush Pro 3.5s - do you have any tips for making them more comfortable? Do you use an insole? Do you wear the same size that you do for everyday shoes, or did you size up? How tightly do you tie your laces?

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  2 года назад

      I tie them fairly tight.
      And yes I wear the same size. No insoles, just by themselves. I like them, I guess shoes feel differently to others. Adidas makes good shoes as well.

    Hey I have a question. I've been playing for 3-1/2 weeks and I have been using a grip that has my index finger extended on the paddle head /throat area. I think this is kind of like training wheels. I don't see any high level players using this grip. Just wanted your thoughts on this subject.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  2 года назад

      There are some very high level players that do that well, although most pros don’t hold it that way.
      I hope to do a video about this soon.

    • @jaradgarren2740
      @jaradgarren2740 2 года назад +1

      I’ve used this grip since I’ve learned. I asked the same questions 2 years ago. The “ping pong grip” is a thing… I don’t see it at the highest level, but I see it more regularly at the 4.5-5.0 level on YT videos. I feel like the extended finger gives me better directional control and a looser grip which allows for softer shots. The only change I’ve made to my grip since learning is to move the extended finger from the center of the paddle to the edge. I now very infrequently hit the finger with the ball on a backhand swing.

    • @ThiccBoi23
      @ThiccBoi23 2 года назад +1

      i do the same. To me it gives better control of the paddle. Only time it might hamper is on backhands that require a lot of wrist flexibility if you're beat on the angle

    My Pickleball Instructor always tells me to Dink & do 3rd shot drops in the half of kitchen closest to the net, NOT near NVZ line. If the ball goes to the line, he encourages me to take it out of the air. I'm watching your video & thinking I'd take most of those shots out of the air.

    • @BrionesPickleball
      @BrionesPickleball  Год назад

      If your instructor is always telling you to aim your drops close to the net, you may reconsider getting a new coach, sorry. Lol.
      Just watch one pro level match, and count how many 3rd shot drops land near the net.

    The 5th skill to master is of course, “the twiddle!” Jordan seems to do this after nearly every successful reset or drop shot 😂. And if “twiddle” is only a table tennis term, it means flipping/spinning the racket in your hands. It is also the only skill in the video I’m also a master at and do it compulsively. Glad to know I’m not alone. 😂 Thanks for another great video!
