The fact that you’re not making this channel as your primary income, combined with the fact that your tone is more mature than the average RUclips channel (none of the thumbnail faces, the misleading titles, two hour reaction videos to three paragraphs of news) are why I subscribe to the channel and why I enjoy what you’re putting out. It’s a breath of fresh air, and feels far more sensible than so many channels.
I could never really formulate it but I think the quality of your content shows that you don't do this for the payroll. These days it's rare to see a channel that is not "going full-time" and I think it shows.
I always find it really sad when "going full time" hurts a channel in that way. It must be so stressful for people and it must force them into certain directions that are uncomfortable, and then it shows in the work, and people like it less, and it's like a vicious circle.
Seen it happen to so many hobby based youtubers.
I don't personally understand people saying 'do what you love for a living, you'll never work a day in your life' - nothing would kill my loves more than trying to squeeze money out of them!
I think not having the pressure of having to put out a video really helps with quality.
Congrats, amigo. You keep filming, I'll keep watching and learning.
The potential schedule for book club sounds reasonable.
So long as the next 3 books are First Heretic, Know No Fear, and Betrayer.
Mira's eyes must be opened.
Congrats, well deserved! As someone who's come back to the hobby after an almost 20 year hiatus, I've especially enjoyed your retrospectives, how the lore has developed over the years.
I’m an editor at Play On, and when I started working on editing the videos they make I was thrown into warhammer so deeply that I found your channel and it was the best way to take in the world that GW has made. I love other lore channels don’t get me wrong but I have found your videos to be to the point and helpful for learning about this world I have found myself in. Your retrospective series have been my favourite especially as they help describe how this crazy world has evolved.
I would love to see more videos like your retrospectives but I am happy to see you not treat this as a grind. Play On would love to explore other games like Marvel Crisis Protocol and other game modes GW publishes but because of how much time it takes to make them it isn’t viable. Keep this being fun for you, chasing the algorithm and staying relevant and up to date all the time has its costs and when it is your full time job to make content it loses its lustre sometimes.
Love your videos and look forward to more from you. If you ever find yourself in Vancouver it would be great to have you visit the studio!
Congratulations brother! Been watching the journey from the early days, really deserved! Would love to do a collaboration if you are up for it!
Nice one! Great to hear another RUclipsr not doing it as a full-time job and not worrying about being a slave to the "algorithm" ,just doing their own thing. Side-hustle is the perfect description.
Crazy how time flies... been almost subbed since the beginning. Quality has always been very high, keep on going! :)
Sabbat Worlds crusade history video would be excellent!
I'm only 8 mins in but I just want to say something kind of random. I am "about" your age (38), you going into detail and being so open about "How" successful the channel is and the relevance that has to your life is strangely inspiring? I think a lot of us have considered doing youtube or streaming as a side thing, you being honestly about it being "fun" but not better than your current career feels relevant to me. Anyway, thanks for the work you do, I appreciate ya.
Greetings from iran, me and my mates have followd your stuff for a while now and really apreciate it. Congradulations, I hope the channel would grow more as the time goes on. 👌
Thanks!
For the Gaming and how 40K functions as a game it would be cool to talk to someone like Winters seo, who is a simlar size but much more on the warhammer battle report side. And then maybe even play a game with the lovely hat wearing chap.
3 years, crickey that's gone quickly.. I've been enjoying your videos from the start.
The most enjoyable, knowledgeable, level headed and reasonable lore-tuber on here.
I'm glad you do this as a second job instead of full time like some others do as without monetary pressure to knock out click-bait videos every week it's kept the content quality level very high with genuinely interesting content ( recent DA history one as a good example) instead of OMG reaction to the latest book dragggged out for 10 mins for the clicks.
Here's to another three years of top quality content.
Thanks Ian, I'm looking forward to the next one.
P.s. I'm one of the 3 people who watched the sanguinala video... It was a great silly laugh along 😆 more please.
👍👍 🎉 Congrats, Ian!! More *_PLEASE...._*
1: I love the channel, keep up the good work.
2: NEVER change the intro/outro music.
3: How about a room tour video. That would be interesting.
4: I'm looking forward to your planned video about the warp. Here's a question to ponder. We are always told that you can't look upon the warp unless you're a navigator. Yet in 'Macragge's Honour' graphic novel, when they were chasing the Word bearer ship through the warp, this didn't seem to be of any concern. The window shutters were open and everybody was looking outside trying to visually see the Word Bearer vessel. Surely an impossible task even outside the warp
A Siege of Terra review would be amazing - maybe add for each book a guide to which of the main series are "relevant" to them to pad it out a bit?
Congrats on 100K, and here's to 100K more!
Congratulations man! Incredible work
Congratulations! Very easy watching content. I'm happy for you.
Thanks Ian! Your channel is lovely.
Would love for you to do some weird old school stuff like take of four gamers rogue trader or 1st edition Warhammer fantasy roleplay but I understand it's good and important that you do the new stuff.
I have to admit I loved your 5th ed tale of four especially for all the great collector piece models Rus brought fourth for us!
Glad you are doing the modern epic btw! And thanks again!
P.s. I love that you aren't a RUclipsr and are instead normal and a fan/hobbyist (and not a super fan mark or some kind of far right weirdo...)
Late 80s stuff that was in the air I think was a lot more 2000AD, than Pratchett and Gaiman. They became a thing through the 90s and I could totally see them being influences on later developments, but early on I saw much more Nemesis the Warlock and Hammer Horror in the games. I'd be fascinated to see a video of what you dig up, though.
Cleaning out your attic and driving engagement at the same time seems wonderfully efficient. :)
I'm not in fine arts myself, but many of my friends are, so I have a sense of how all-consuming it can become. However, if your schedule permitted - I think it would be very fun to meet you in person if your RL job ever brought you to my city. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. So one thing you might consider is announcing somewhere - hopefully in a RUclips post as well as patreon etc - if you ever chose to do a "2-hour meet at this local bar" while you were on the road. It's extremely unlikely I'll make it to the UK any time soon, and again, I'm sure there's other folks who'd be interested as well.
Obviously there's also potential concerns there, I'm not saying I've solved all the problems or that it's definitely a good idea, but I figured I'd put the notion out there.
Ian love your work. Not a big gamer, but Mira and yourself give me a venue to turn off the outside world for a bit, and indulge in some nostalgia.
A Siege of Terra vid in the style of your Vraks video would be absolutely incredible. I don't think anyone's done it yet. Keep up the great work 🎉
Great milestone, well done! This is my go-to channel for 40K lore, and I really enjoy the book club. And don't sweat the regular scheduling. Quality > Quantity any day :)
Exactly 1 year ago it was one of your videos about the Astartes that brought me into Warhammer 40k and even into the tabletop game itself. Ever since I've been watching and listening to your lore videos and over that year a became a total 40k addict . I learned how to paint miniatures, how to build terrain out of scrap, I met many new people and made a couple of new very good friends. It was a thrilling year with many cool experiences and that all just because of a cool voice talking about two hearts and three lungs 😄. Cheers!
That’s awesome. It’s honestly nice to see that you’re not doing this full time so you have the freedom to do what you want and not chase clicks. RUclips full time doesn’t have to be the goal. A few suggestions. I’d love to see more ttrpg lets plays. Imperium maledictum and wrath and glory would be awesome. Also, it would be cool to see you homebrew a tabletop narrative event and plan out your own campaign/crusade game. Going into the process of how you structure the narrative and work in elements looking at what stuff worked in previous events like Arks of Omen or Pariah Nexus and such. Would be cool to see how you craft it. Keep up the great work!
Been here since your video on Adeptus Arbites and plan to stay here and remain a patron for a long time. Cant wait for Mira to get to the Word Bearer centric HH stories, I think Argel Tal is going to make her feel quite conflicted lol
you got me into warhammer, ian! i've now listened to maybe one million audiobooks on audible thanks to you.
I absolutely LOVED the Imperium Maledictum Christmas special, sad to hear no one watched it. Also generally enjoy your more introspective form of content. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations!
I appreciate your not algorithm driven content. I think you and GMG are the two channels whose videos I most consistently watch. Both channels share that ethos.
Congratulations Ian, Book clubs & Tale of 4 gamers are my favourites. Makes you feel part of them! Looking forward to what's next.
Keep doing this for fun. The minute you rely on the creative industries for a living, it can sometimes feel like an obligation. Sounds like your business is going fabulous, so just enjoy the ride. Your doing great! The lifespan is very true, I think you'll never burnout as a result and can drop it on your terms. Your lack of clickbaity behaviour is just one of many reasons I really enjoy this channel. The lack of sponsorship is super refreshing. Kudos
You have quickly become one of my favorite creators on this platform. Keep doing what you're doing!
I really appreciate your approach to content making Ian. I love that you just make whatever you fancy and aren't at the whims of sponsors and such! It makes for much more unique an interesting content! Bring on the retro content!
Congratulations! I can't believe I've been watching your content since day one and I don't even play 40k. I just love the lore and you have a real talent writing and producing your videos. Well done, and I look forward to seeing more in the coming years.
For what it’s worth, I’d love to watch a video of you and Luetin talking about the Warp for hours on end.
Hey Ian i just wanted to say thank you. Your videos have always griped me and I can watch them again and again. Your voice is wounderfull to listen to.
You inspired me to do so many awsome things in the hobby, from building my own daemons of the Ruinstorm army, to delve into ancient Warhammer lore and so much more.
Thank you so much.
How come no one has watched the Sanguinal hustle? This video was amazingly amazing, I really hope you'll do more RPGing on the channel in the future.
Congrats! I've watched right from the start, don't play 40k but do play the RPGs and read the books. Well done on three years and look forward to celebrating four years with you this time next year!
I think you have somehow managed to get the balance, frequency and quality levels remarkably high. Keep it up!
I still remember the community post from Spike and Wib that recommended you. Best endorsement ever honestly.
Keep it up. My life had a real hard reset around the same time you started and I subsequently began watching. Nice to see you doing well and I’ve enjoyed your content.
I’m very glad your channel exists. Keep it up and maybe I’ll meet you at an event and say hi!
Arbitor Ian, you are such an institution I can’t believe you’ve been around only three years! Keep up the great work man! Congrats!
So happy for arbitorian's success. He just brought such a breath of fresh air to the 40ktuber space. Light the nurgle candles boiz
Congrats Ian! I am happy work and the youtube channel are doing well. I am a big fan of the book clubs and the lore videos put into context. For me what makes me come back to the channel and have the notification bell on is the quality and originality of the videos, the maturity, the nerdiness without the cringe a lot of warhammer youtubers have, and like very few other youtubers you don't try to min/max the algorithms and the sponsorships. I believe this is more sustainable both for the video producers and the viewers (not just money wise, but also to avoid burning out, I prefer eating at a restaurant than being force fed fast food). Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. I wish you the best for the next 3 years and more!
Your channel got me back into Warhammer. Please keep up the great work and here’s to another successful year.
congratz my guy. I still think you're seriously under-recognized. I share your stuff but I don't really know anyone.
@Arbitorian you seem like a well-read person as far as scifi is concerned.
Would it be possible to make a video describing your experiences with scifi outside of 40k? Things that inspired you before you got into warhammer and what finally drew you to it?
Re: Patreon and giveaways
I initially joined the Patreon with the idea that I'd join in the Horus Heresy progress stuff, but that fell by the wayside due to life stuff. I don't really have any expectations that I should be receiving anything in return, since I really enjoy your videos. The thing that I'm "getting" from the Patreon is marginally contributing to you being in a better position to keep making your videos. For what it's worth, the Horus Heresy Legions series was my absolute favourite thing you've made.
With regards to giveaways, I think it's a better idea to tie that specifically to Patreon rather than the RUclips channel itself. Auspex does that, though I know he also has a separate Facebook entry system, which I think allows it to conform to legal requirements. Having people subscribe for giveaways inflates subscriber counts, but it also creates a large number of subscribers who don't watch your stuff, which wrecks your algorithm performance. Doing stuff like that seems to contribute to the phenomenon of channel death you were talking about.
Agreed. I think patreon for that sort of thing is also WAY easier to manage!
Btw absolutely love your necromunda stuff, especially building your gang in each edition! Been binging while painting my ash wastes nomads lol
I really appreciate your lore videos. I started with warhammer in late 7th so its really interesting to hear about the lore in its historical perspective!
Ideally I'd like to see a map from HH to 40K explaining what all the characters are doing and the major events
Enjoying all that you create. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for everything you've shared with us and looking forward to much more!
Very much so looking forward to your year ahead, this is easily my favourite Warhammer lore channel.
Retrospectives and horrible heretics, sabbat campaign lore, and more book club! All of that is super exciting for me :]
Awesome stuff, i was kinda wondering where those series went so i am glad to hear they are not abandoned.
Also: The Videos about the Badab-war and Vraks are some of my favorites. But overall this channel is a gem.
Congrats on passing the 100k. Always look forward to your videos, especially the book club ones with Mira covering the Heresy!
Congratulations on three years! Your channel is one of my favourites to watch, thank you for so many great videos. It would be great to see a video about the War in Heaven 👍
Great video. Really like the work you're day job sounds way more fun that being war-hammer youtuber. Looking forward to the retrospective videos it always fun to learn the evolution of the product and history around it. Keep up the good work.
Hi Ian, i'm a pretty new fan of 40k and have since fallen down the rabbit warp hole of the immaterium. Your videos have been super entertaining and educational to watch. Currently consuming my way through the Gaunt's Ghosts series (on Sabbat Martyr) and I can't get enough of them. Keep up the great work! Also please keep doing book club with Mira!
Congrats on the 108k subs, totally deserve it! Love your way of storytelling, providing the meta analysis of what was going on in the real world behind it (and always giving sources, something I wish more people did!). The Retrospective videos are my favourite (despite 40k lore never changing according to certain people on twitter lol). Regarding the video about competitive vs casual, I remember in one of Jordan Sorcery's WFB history videos he showed early GW or White Dwarf articles about how super casual and friendly army lists and gaming should be, could be fun to dig those up for a comparison to the super serious meta era we live in now....
What the heck the Christmas video was the best, people watch that it's hilarious and Ian makes REALLY funny noises
Please more book club videos with Mira Manga! I'm currently going through the Heresy and i love when you guys do reviews!
Congrats! Hope this is only the beginning. I really enjoy your lore videos and have been sending them to other 40k fans at work! 😂😅
Congrats Ian, very well deserved - a Sabbat Wars video would be awesome (P.S, I swear we were on the same flight this week).
Ha! Was it to/from Venice? Because that's where I've been going this week
Hi Ian, I just wanted to say please keep making whatever you enjoy. Especially as this isn't your main income I'd hate to see it become a burden to you (I have been and done that sadly). Your enthusiasm sines through so brightly I'd rather you do two videos a year that you really care about than a video every month.
I'd really hate you to burn out an stop posting, which it sounds like you've thought about a little. so please definitely look after you and keep things sustainable. This is a side bit of fun for you. Make sure it stays fun and use us as a community to make it fun for you! (Legion imperialis tournament when? 👀)
But seriously, I adore what you put out and keep it up. You are fantastic in how you present things and if you haven't already I'd beg you link up with the tabletop tactics team for a podcast because that conversation would be to die foe.
Congratulations 🎉 When I got back into the hobby yours was one of the channels that was heartily recommended and it was an excellent recommendation. Thanks for all the amazing videos!
A video on the warp would be great. I feel like I have a better handle on it after The End and The Death.
I started watching you last july as i started getting into 40k,not onlu are you my fav 40k channel but fav overall! So relaxing an fun,i get the familiar warm fuzzies when i hear your intro music! Wish you the best man seriously
Congratulations
It has been a joy to watch your videos and follow along with some of the content threads as they have happened
Love your videos and appreciate your very healthy relationship with the channel and not feeling compelled to make the videos click-baity. Honestly it’s inspiring! Makes me want to start a channel knowing that it’s possible to do it as a quality side hustle.
Congrats on 100k.
I found you through the old Necromunda vids - I'd love to see you get back to that, especially if you get to some of those big event style vids like you did for Vraks.
i loved the Imperium Maledictum episode! it's too bad actual plays dont get much by way of views, as i'd love to see more of that.
The videos *are* better for it. Thank you very much for sharing!
Go Ian! You and Eons of Battle are my favourite 40k channel up here, dream of a collab!
And if I can made a request... a timeline of the new lore after cicatrix is it possible?
Congratulations mate! I dont know hpw its been for you, but its beene gtreat for me. Thank mr. Ian
Well done!!!! Congrats 👏 👏 keep up the awesome work.
Yay 🎉 congratulations. I saw you first as a guest on the Painting Phase and him then have been binge watching every RUclips post since. Love your work Ian, thank you for all your time and efforts. A work of passion and dedication for the hobby. Hope to catch you one day in person to say thanks in passing.
Congrats dude! You've been quite the pressence in me and my dad's corner of the hobby, ever entertaining when you upload :)
Btw if you happen to see this, what's the music in your intro?
never read a Warhammer book, never played the game, love the lore because of the videos. great man keep em coming!
Fantastic work. I love your channel.
I stopped playing in 2008 but still kept up with the novels and the lore.
Recently bought a few Primaris models. Lets see if they get primed before 2025..........
"A good side hustle..."
HMRC sends their regards, lol
Well done mate, keep up the good work!
Congratulations great channel thoroughly enjoy it and you got me back into 40K. 👍🏻
Nice. You started around the time I started getting into the hobby, and definitely my favourite hobby YT.
Really like this isn't your job, keeps it so you're posting what you want and enjoy (in the main), rather than chasing the algorithm; too many people make it full time job and it really seems to affect their output - and so important to highlight YT channels peak. The sincerity of you and Mira is the real joy of watching the videos.
Congratulations! Looking forward to the future! 🎉
Love your content, would really like to see citations / sources in the video descriptions. Looking forward to 2024.
Congrats Ian, well deserved. Glad to hear all is going well. 👍
I love the resurgance of the retrospectives.
Love the style of your channel Ian. Keep doing what you're doing
oh god, it's like you just started last year hahah
FORGOT IT's BEEN SO LONG!
CONGRATS
Love the channel. The Sanguinala RPG series was great silly fun! Also really enjoy your videos on how the 40k lore changed through the years.
As someone who’s only come to the universe in the last few years, those retrospectives showing how factions evolved are THE BEST!!! Like I’d love to hear wtf genestealers were before they were tyranids, if they were really a different faction at first…
Congrats on 100k, absolutely deserved, this is a great channel. You were actually my first real introduction to 40k, outside of a passing reference or meme, and I think you put the lore into a very easy to understand package, that is also really interesting. Looking forward to whatever you put out next!
I've really enjoyed the retrospectives. Looking forward to more
I really enjoy your content ❤ looking forward for things to come
It's been three years, already? You very quickly became one of my top three or five channels when you started, so...congratulations. And thanks for all your work so far.
I found your arguments on how your RUclips channel works for you very informative. I also like the idea that, to some extent guilt helps motivate you to make videos, so I did what I could and joined your Patreon!
