When I got this coral bark 3 years ago, it was just a stick. I watered it regularly and I swear I didn't think it would survive. But three years later, it thrived and filling out nicely. Right now, no leaves but the color of the bark is bright in the sun. Stunning.
I bought one about a month ago from a nursery that had recently been hit by a tornado. Most of the plants and trees were a little worse for wear, so I got it for a steal. Only $25.00 for this tree! I'm very excited to watch it grow.
@Clint Cannon I live in zone 8b southeast US. It doesn't have the stunning red bark you would expect to see in colder climates, but it is healthy and growing well. Right now it is about 5ft in height with light green leaves. The tips of the leaves are tinged in a crimson color. It get morning sun and dappled afternoon sun/shade.
I just got one for free because the store was going to throw them away! The leaves were wilty so I drowned the heck out of it in its pot. Let's hope it survives and thrives. This tree has been on my wishlist. Today was my lucky day!
Good and informative, I only bought one yesterday and it has some super low branches that go out in ever direction just above the soil line that I felt needed to be taken off so thanks so much for all the tips, it has helped greatly 😊
I just bought 2 of these to put in my very large flower beds. I'm very excited to have a chance to grow Japanese maples. I needed something with a green or yellow foliage, as my house is a dark red brick, and needed something to stand out, these are the ticket. Your video was super helpful, thanks for the planting tips.
Hi there I’ve moved to Vancouver WA 3 years ago from Hawaii and boy there is a lot to learn. My red bark maple’s leaves are browning at the edges and the bark is turning white more at the top. It maybe some hot summer days or am I over or under watering? I like your RUclips sight as it’s very informative. Thanks!
Would you say that a lot of the pruning practices would translate well into bonsai? Do you have pictures of some winter pictures of your maple when the leaves have fallen?
We got one of these cuties planted in our backyard last March (zone 7b). A frost surprised us after that and burned all the leaves. Now it’s showing black areas on it’s beautiful bark. Looks like necrosis 😭 Is it dying? What can I do to help it?
Did it die? They don’t tell you they are sensitive to poorly drained areas and cold/freeze areas. If exposed they develop die back, wilt leaves, and fungus (black areas) etc.. I will never buy a coral bark again living in zone 6a.
I see that this is an old vid, but I just purchased one of these maples for bonsai, problem is, I live in zone 11 (I know terrible) given all the hardships my zone would face for a maple, do you have any suggestions for this specific variety I might be able to get away with?
Hi- can coral bark maple be transplanted? If so, is mid- April ok?Planted one 3 years ago, it looks healthy and has put on growth but got it too close to the fence. Thanks for any help.
Very helpful video. I've had my coral bark Japanese maple for 6 years and it was doing fine until this summer. Recently alot of the leaves starting dying and turning crispy where I had to cut them off. I've checked it everyday and have had to trim more and more. Its getting smaller and smaller. The last couple of days it seems to be doing better but I'm worried. I love this tree and don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your video. I have had a coral bark for a couple of years (in the ground). Over this summer the leaves were orange. Now that it is fall they have shriveled and died but are still attached to the stem. I believe on one branch the leaves died before they did on the rest of the tree. What's the likely problem and is there any hope for it? Thanks.
Israel N, I live in Georgia 7b I saw a lot of Emperor 1 & Bloodgood in full sun thriving and huge tree with dark red leaves. I am surprised cause it says full sun to part shade. I just bought each tree last week, it would be full sun then about 2:00 p.m shade.
I have an Emperor 1 in full afternoon sun in Georgia 8b and leaves look perfect . My Orange dream is in much less afternoon sun and it’s leave burn and look a bit bleached on the top of the tree . Japanese Maples are so variable in their sun tolerance . Tamukeyama and bloodgood also seem to do well in afternoon sun here .
+keysBW It wouldn't hurt it, but there are better ways to fertilize shrubs and trees. Control release fertilizers are easier, because they don't have to be reapplied so much
I have a new one still in a small growing pot. It has one long, wheeping type branch that is leafing out on the tip and several little leaves coming out close to base above soil level. I'm wondering about cutting off part of the long branch. It doesn't look like it will ever form a straightish trunk.
I would cut the long straggler. The ones coming from the base need to go for sure as they are probably coming from the original graft (the root base) not the desired tree part.
Just discovered this video. A landscaper installed one of these in a less-than-ideal spot (though it seemed like a good idea at the time), but it's absolutely flourished. Problem is: I have no idea how to prune it, now that it's about 20ft tall. A pro looked at it, but wanted twice what the tree cost to prune it. The area it's in is about 8' wide, so it's looking tall and skinny. Should I top it somewhere along the main branch? I'd like to not have to kill it.
Can i keep the tree at a small height rather than let it grow to 12' more like 4-5 feet tall. I'm looking for a beautiful decorative tree that I can put in my garden, something that isn't too wide and tall but colorful and beautiful like this. Any suggestions? I'm in Zone 7, 1/2 shade and 1/2 bright sun
You can, but I wouldn't let it stay frozen for very long at the time. Mine in 7b stays frozen for maybe 24 hours here or there. Potentially it could stay frozen for a week straight where you are.
@@JimPutnam tanks for your reply I actually don't have any space left where it gets some shade in afternoon .. that's y I planted it in center of my garden ... Can I put some thing like green cloth in hot summer to give some relief ?
Hello Jim you have great short videos on maples. I have been on the internet of course searching for the correct answer that I'm about to ask but the answers all over the place. I've bought a few maples this last summer and they are still in their planter boxes and very root bound. I'm in Fort Worth TX and am wondering when is the best time to plant these trees and the exact process if possible...
I would think that they would have leafed out in Austin by now. All of mine have in North Carolina. If the branches bend but don't break, there is still hope.
Cool, thanks. Figured, as much. I'll give it a few more months before calling it. I knew this tree likes well drained soil, so of course, after I planted it, it rained in Austin for like 2 weeks straight.
Hi Jim, couple questions. I planted a coral bark last spring then came a late frost here in the Charlotte area after it had budded out. Most, if not all the branches turned black and never leaved out again. I planted another one this past fall and it seemed to do well. The branches turned a very vivid pink, including the trunk. Now since we've been having all this very cold weather, and snow, some of the branches are turning dark towards the blackish color. Should I be concerned?
+Michael Paffenroth I really don't know how much damage we have yet. It may be March before we see how bad it is. I was in south Carolina this week and it is very bad down there. It's wait and see unfortunately.
I'm not sure what happened to my Japanese corals but the same year i bought them that summer they did well but that winter they both died while left in the containers and haven't spouted any leaves since. What did i do wrong? U said they could be left in containers for a few years, $50 for each down the drain.
Question regarding pruning and health of tree. I just purchased a Japan Maple Coral Bark tree that is approx. 8 feet tall. It's leader or main central stem that goes straight up from the trunk is cut-off midway tree's height (4 to 5 ft). The tree has other lateral branches on all sides. I'm concerned that tree may not grow it's full projected length of 15 to 20ft in height. The sales person at the nursery said not to worry as other lateral branches will continue to grow up and sideways to fill the canopy. Is the sales person telling me the truth? Will the loss of leader stem drastically slow tree's growth? Please advise.
I got two coral barks, a weeping cherry tree and a crepe myrtle for my woodsy, heavilly shaded back yard. If the lack of sun doesn't kill them my pitbulls will.
would it be a good place to plant in full sun once it reached a considerable height in Wylie, TX? Its zone 8a and im not sure if i can plant it full sun

Planted one last fall and she is pushing out beautiful chartreuse green leaves. Fascinating how it goes coral in the winter. Really nice JM!!
I’ve learned if you keep the roots area shaded, by tall grasses for example, the Sango Kaku tolerates heat MUCH better
I just bought two at $135 each. Thanks for a great informative video.

I just planted one in my backyard. Looks pretty. It's 5 ft tall and growing slowly.
We just bought one! Totally understand the line “not the tree you want to feed the deer”, all too well. Lol most expensive tree we’ve ever bought!
Hi there. I enjoyed “”how to prune a coral bark maple”. Do you have any videos demonstrating how to prune it as a sapling, and later as it grows?
Thanks Jim

I am in zone 6 , it is now June, is it too late to fertilize my coral maple? Tks gr8 video
How will it affect it if i take cuttings and let the normal rootstock grow the cuttings?
I had to chop the top off my small CB maple the bottom is full of leaves..will it grow back
Do you know if root system is invasive I would like to plant near driveway ? Coral bark maple
So cant grow in florida?
Hi
Thank you for your video
If I cut the top branches, can it be growing sideways?
I don’t want it tall but widening laterally
Will Gary's Top Pot Soil be good for this maple? Is fish emulsion good as a fertilizer?
I live in the mountains in Pisgah Forest - mostly acidic soil. How do these do with that type of acidic soil?
I've had seeds for a long time that I'm not sure how to germinate I live in middle Tennessee
I'm in zone 9, in the redwoods. I have a lot of shade, so would this grow with only dappled light?
Does anybody know?

Yes
Is All purpose Miracle grow crystals mix with water okay to use on Japanese maple

What brand of slow release fertilizer do you recommend going to Lowes today to purchase a bigger pot for the maple
+keysBW Osmocote is always good
I would use Jobe tree spikes instead. They provide slower, more consistent feeding.

Keep it in part shade or make sure it is always moist but not too soaked .

5 feet? Sounds like you want a shrub? You should try a Cotinus Grace and train it into a tree form

Thanks for this video. Very helpful and informative for a novice. How far do you recommend planting this from a fence? I was thinking 1-2 feet away
I recommend 4ft at least. I typical look at the minimum of the maximum width range and divide by 2. This way it stays in the yard.
