    Quite a helpful no nonsense video. I'm growing one as a container plant in Zone 4, Minnesota. It has survived it's first year, purchased as high graft (2'). It''s currently overwintering in an unheated greenhouse. Minimum temps are around 25 F. Can't wait to see how it leafs out this spring.

    I live in zone 5 and our is planted in direct sun. Not a good situation as the leaves burn every year. We have now planted other ornamental trees with taller height to help protect our crimson Queen Japanese Crimson lace from direct sun light.

      Very beautiful in the Spring though.

    Just picked this beautiful tree up. It’s my first time planting anything.
    Live in 8B or 9 (Seattle, WA). Bought a container 26inched width and 17 inches deep. Hopefully large enough?
    Plan to plant it facing east and will be covered from the south. That should help with not getting too much sun. Granted, Seattle doesn’t see much anyhow :).
    Any tips you have I would appreciate it! This is the best video on maples out there. Thanks!

    I live in Illinois and my Japanese maple died from the -50 below temps we got this winter I’m guessing? It was at least 5-10 years old. We dug it out, and want to put another one there. Anything different we should do if we plant in mid-August? When to fertilize? Type of dirt to use? Fertilize now or in winter when it’s asleep? Thanks so much!!!!

    Just planted one last week, and it's been in the 90's since then. I don't know if it's getting too much water, or needs water, .The leaf are shriveling up, yet are dying on the tips. Need help if you could. Thanks Helen Phillops

    Hey Jim I love watching Hortube. Question, my Crimson Queen has leafs wilting after transplanting it into a bigger pot. I monitor it closely and it seems that it has new wilting leaves every other day. I used 60% pine bark mulch, 35% screened compost and 5% peat-moss as potting soil. It's located where it gets morning sun and afternoon. I'm in zone 6b. I know it's vague info but have you seen this happen before with Crimson Queen maples? Thank you! Also it's worth mentioning that I got it from the nursery 1 week ago.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 года назад +1

      It is probably just some transplant shock. Let it dry out between waterings and stop looking at it😂

    • @luisromero1208
      @luisromero1208 4 года назад

      thank you so much for the response! One more thing, should I be worried about the pine bark mulch? Here in the Boston area it's soo hard to find the one that you use in your videos so I decided to settle for mulch type pine bark from a big box store. Not sure if the added pieces of wood will have a longterm negative effect on my tree.

    I planted this same maple 2 months ago in Middle georgia, approximately 18 inchs tall when planted , its on a slight slope with very sandy , reddish clay with some white clay (kaolin) mixed in...I actually been watering it 3 times a week, what im getting at its been 2 months and its already twice the size and new branches approx 12 inches of growth, and also 6 inches taller is this uncommon to grow this quick. ( Its planted in the ground not a container)

    Hi there I have a 9 foot japanese maple. I noticed a couple branches were dead last year. This year none of the branches bloomed. After some research I noticed that the plastic i put at the base of the tree could have cause the trees roots to be too wet for too long.
    Do I just need to cut all of the branches back and wait a few years to see if it blooms again? Please help. I am DEVASTATED! 😱😳😓😥😢

    I'm in zone 8 and I would love one at the entrance of my house, but the area gets direct sun from about 10-4. Is that too hot for the crimson queen?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  6 лет назад +2

      It probably wouldn't kill it, but it would be crispy by mid summer every year.

      I am in zone 7b and I have one at the front entrance with the same hours of sun. The leaves did not get crispy but the leaves turn green in the hot summer sun. Then in the fall, they turn a beautiful crimson. They are also bright crimson in spring.

      My very old large one gets sunburned because the tree that sheltered it is getting very old and has lost branches. So no, not full sun in Asheville NC. It is 15’ wide and about 12’ tall now.
