My God she's a force of nature. Back in the days when there was no CGI, airbrushing and auto-tune, you either got it, or ya ain't, and boy, she got it!
+Jim Fitzpatrick Just saw 3 of my nephews do this as the school play -- the girl playing Winnifred had the voice and the cojones to pull it off. And the girl playing the Queen nailed it!
Carol’s 90th birthday TV special sent me here! Now I’m watching this at age 30, it’s so hard to believe it is her as Winifred when I saw her at age 14 I was 14 as Queen Aggravain in the 2005 TV movie version with Tracy Ullman as Winifred. Here I see Carol having a ball playing the part.
We did this in high school and only years later did I see Carol in the role...WOW!!! She is the funniest and best ever imaginable. Thanks for putting this on here!!
is it any wonder she got her own TV show? After seeing this vid, which I'd never seen before now, it's very easy to see why she reigned on TV for 11 years as the greatest entertainer! WOW!
@HouseAddict8240 I got a major laugh out of everytime everyone else leans back from her every time she goes up for the belt on the "shy" or "try". It's hilarious. Semi-subtle visual humor. ;-)
I love where she sings, "Horribly shy". Wonderful voice control. She's really a star. I bet she hated doing the Disney version though, they butchered the score. Kinda funny that she ended up being the queen.
A woinderful example of TERRIFIC MUSICAL THEATER -with a brilliant young star, wonderful music and lyrics, real choreography. It was called MUSICAL COMEDY folks...and what we have today is a POOR IMITATION. Where we once had theatrical gold, we now have zircon.
My neice got to play this role in high school or some such. She's a brilliant actress, has also played Amber Von Tussle. I wish I could have seen her in this role.
I saw the show she was wonderful. I still sing this song to myself! It makes me laugh every time, that's the thing about live theater you are "so present"
yeah, she did this musical on broadway for a while. it was her big break. (paired with the garry moore show) she has also been in a lot of other plays.
I just finished a production of once apon a mattress. And watching this has me so shocked! Where this show began and where it is now, is mind blowing to me!
@NYCprincess7 Same here! My college is doing this in the spring! When I first listened to this soundtrack, I thought the songs were relatively simple, but now looking at the sheet music and tackling this song... it's proving to be an interesting and fun challenge! Hoorah for Freds!
What we got on our TV screens came at a loss elsewhere. Just think of the roles on the American stage from the late 50's through the late 80's she would have been perfect for. Many we won't recognize because those musicals closed in less than two months for want of great talent in the lead. yep there is good material sitting in draws and boxes awaiting a second chance, that Burnett might have taken to the Tonys.
I've heard this on the original cast album a million times, but being able to see this is fantastic. Everything about it is perfect. Those guys dancing that terrific imaginative choreography, the driving blaring jazz of the song itself, and then of course . . . Carol Burnett. Not enough can possibly be said about what an oversized talent she was, apparently with an over-sized ego to match. But she deserves every bit of the spotlight in spite of her off-stage antics - a million things to note in this performance, but listen carefully to how she changes from her first blaring 'Shy' to the last stanza - she's been singing slightly flat throughout for the character, but in the final stanzas where she's one them over, that voice flips over into a full bodied gorgeous sound. Those little subtle choices throughout, in every bit of this superb performance, are what made musical comedy what it was.
Where did you get your information regarding Carol's "over-sized ego"? Everything I've read and heard--from people who've worked with her--is just the opposite.
It's right here, on RUclips! That's digital! I'm responding 7 years after the original post, but it was digital then and it's digital now. But now, there are probably additional ways to get it, such as on RUclips Music.

Maybe someday Disney will relent and lets this (or the 1972 remake) be broadcast on PBS as they did with their original Cinderella telecast. Of all 3 TV versions, this remains the best, even with "Happily Ecer After" inexplicably cut and replaced with the extremely weak "Spelling"

I did! 😊 This is my first time seeing this. But I use to watch The Carol Burnett show reruns with my parents. She was hilarious! Randy did her justice. 😄
SORRY... if anyone knows where I can get the full recording of this version with Carol I will be infinitely grateful!! We are opening in 2 weeks and I'd really love to see more of what Carol does for some more fabulous ideas!

God I wish I was born sooner that way I would be a star in a time when people knew talent when they saw it.
This show was written specifically for Carol Burnett. It was said, that if she didn't play this part, that the show would not be completed.
Many of you may think this quality is bad but this is really what our TV's were like back then!!
Her facial expressions are the best thing ever. Just, this song, ahhh it so embodies the amazing showtune with that amazing comedic timing and irony!
This lady is a national treasure!
I like how when Dauntless starts talking she’s just like, “yeet, denied” and then tries to find someone else. ooof. i 🖤 carol burnett so much.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel reminded me of this performance. One of my favorite talents. Comedy Gold
After almost a half century, she is still the best!
I miss the days of musicals like this. She is quite amazing.
What a thrill to see this again. I was watching in '64 (at age 10). "Once Upon a Mattress" remains one of my favorite musicals.
carol burnett has the perfect voice for the role of princess winifred. you can tell that she is thoroughly enjoying herself. she does a great job!
We did this in high school and only years later did I see Carol in the role...WOW!!! She is the funniest and best ever imaginable. Thanks for putting this on here!!
3:23 that was the most WONDERFUL part!!! 😂😂😂
Lol!
Agree
That NOTE, right?! She's so uniquely talented.
Incredible Carol. Such an underrated singer. ❤️🎶
Is that "Mr. Roper" (i.e., Norman Fell) as the Prince who likes her??!
One of the most talented entertainers ever!!!!! i'm crying, i loved it so much. That voice just sent me into shivers of joy! Love you Carol!!!!!!
is it any wonder she got her own TV show? After seeing this vid, which I'd never seen before now, it's very easy to see why she reigned on TV for 11 years as the greatest entertainer! WOW!

She's really a star. I bet she hated doing the Disney version though, they butchered the score. Kinda funny that she ended up being the queen.
I’m not really a fan of the Disney version. I’m just here for Carol
A woinderful example of TERRIFIC MUSICAL THEATER -with a brilliant young
star, wonderful music and lyrics, real choreography. It was called MUSICAL
COMEDY folks...and what we have today is a POOR IMITATION. Where we

Fenton Glide ok boomer
I agree her performance is amazing, but I don't agree with the other bullshit you wrote
URI - official exactly! Just because Carol Burnett and this show are amazing doesn’t mean shows today aren’t.
The mediocre Princess and the pea is an odd choice to use as a soapbox for this tirade
She is, was, and will always be one of my goddesses. I wanted to be just like her!
The marvelous Mrs. Maisel brought me here
I love when she squeals when she says "oh that was wonderful!"
1.This is an awesome song.
2.I need this song at present,because I'm shy,too.
She's absolutely phenomenal! I love Carol Burnett!
The IS a huge Broadway star...she has actually been in a lot of shows
and you can see why...SHE IS AWESOME
I love Carol Burnett. I too am shy.
Carol Burnett is my hero.
CAROL BURNETT YOU ARE SO DAMN WONDERFUL
She is brilliant!!! I love her facial expressions so much!
Leslie Kritzer recreated this for the Marvelous Mrs Maisel finale. Absolutely amazing!
She's so fantastic!
This was our spring musical, one of my dearest friends was Fred, and she absolutely killed it. I'm endlessly proud of her
i think this is my favorite role for carol burnett. Her first and best!!! :D
My neice got to play this role in high school or some such. She's a brilliant actress, has also played Amber Von Tussle. I wish I could have seen her in this role.
Was lucky enough to see this and it was wonderful!
This was great entertainment!
My comedic heroine...Carol Burnett.
I saw the show she was wonderful. I still sing this song to myself! It makes me laugh every time, that's the thing about live theater you are "so present"
Randy Rainbow sent me here this morning
She did this in the theater w/no body mics. Back in the day when a voice had to project to the back of the house.
Always a joy when Carol Burnett sings this song. Also, shoutout to Jane White--So skilled as playing the prude.
yeah, she did this musical on broadway for a while. it was her big break. (paired with the garry moore show) she has also been in a lot of other plays.
I just finished a production of once apon a mattress. And watching this has me so shocked! Where this show began and where it is now, is mind blowing to me!
Just got cast as Winnifred... SO HAPPY!!! :D
My queen!!!!
I did this musical last year at the local high school it is so much fun to put on everybody laughed from start to finish
This looks like a kinescope. I didn't know they were still doing them then. Glad to have the performance saved.
Soooo excited this is one of my fav musicals and I just got cast as Fred at my school, its my first lead role too:)!!!!!
I love carol burnett so much omg
This is so brilliant and perfect. It brought a tear to my eye for the sheer glory of it.
@NYCprincess7 Same here! My college is doing this in the spring! When I first listened to this soundtrack, I thought the songs were relatively simple, but now looking at the sheet music and tackling this song... it's proving to be an interesting and fun challenge! Hoorah for Freds!

One example maybe the Principal in Grease can be one role she would have been great in?
that dance move at 3:05 is SO epic!!!!
i love her in annie and she is just perfect for this!
@HouseAddict8240 I loved the little "conga" break right before that too! ;-)
Perfection
this is my high schools musical, im auditioning with this song! :)
i sang this for my vocal lessons! it was really fun :D
Thank you so much for posting this!
From the musical that catapulted her career in 1959
And to think I’m seeing this for the first time after years since seeing her as the Queen
i wanna see the whole show of this :)
I watched the 2005 film adaption in 2006 fantastically written and done
I watched in 2007. I found it decent
I've heard this on the original cast album a million times, but being able to see this is fantastic. Everything about it is perfect. I hope someone takes the time to convert this and others to digital. There's no one like her!!!

And the fact that she played the queen later on in the movie version
So surreal don’t you think
I
2022 listened wya
oh my goodness, she would play the princess XD
Fred: Hey nonny nonny is it you?
Knight: Hey nonny nonny nonny no.

That's no way to be
Not with me
Can't you see
That I am just as embarassed as you
And I can understand your point of view
I've always been SHY
I confess that I'm SHY
Can't you guess that this confident air
Is a mask that I wear 'cause I'm shy
And you can be sure
Way down deep I'm demure
Though some people I know may deny it
At bottom I'm quiet and pure
I'm aware that it's wrong to be meek as I am

I pretend to be strong, but as weak as I am
All I can do is try
God knows I try
Though I'm frightened and shy
And despite the impression I give
I confess that I'm living a lie
Because I'm actually terribly timid
And horribly shy
Though a lady may be dripping with glamour
As often as not she will stumble and stammer
When suddenly confronted with romance
And she's likely to fall on her face
When she's finally face to face
With a pair of pants
Quite often the lady's not as hard to please as she seems
Quite often she will settle for something less than the man of her dreams
I'm going fishing for a mate
Knights: She's going fishing for a mate
Fred: I'm gonna look in every brook
Knights: She's gonna look in every brook

Congrats!

ha ha. any one else find it funny that she's the queen in the latest version?
Thank you :')
PLZ comment back if you love carol burnett!!!! I love her!
Call Me Kat Can we just say how wonderful this woman is? There will never ever ever be another Carol Burnett.
I'm auditioning for Winnifred soon, and I'm trying to find all the ways I can make it entertaining, any suggestions?
Hannah Rankey I was in the play when I was younger, I was the Queen. But for the part you want I would say have fun with it. She's supposed to be casual and her energy infectious. So seem comfortable and just own the stage and have fun!
Same I'm about to audition
Looks like she got the part www.sungazette.com/life/showcase/2017/08/ctl-celebrates-40th-season/
...and she was nominated for an award www.sungazette.com/life/showcase/2017/05/community-theatre-league-announces-the-ray-of-light-nominees/
@@mynameisworld Omygosh that’s awesome!
Just watched Disney's version last night, in which Carol plays the queen instead of the princess. I much prefer this one!
That was "WONDERFUL" !!!
I love how this videos has 0 dislikes :)
How many people came here because of Randy Rainbow's latest video?🤭

Mrs maisel brought me here!
Please does ANYONE have the full tv show from either 1964 or 1972?? VHS or DVD!! I've been looking for years.
HOW IN HELL DOES THIS HAVE ANY DISLIKES
I'm auditioning for the wizard of oz this summer and my mom wants me to sing this what do Yall think
@dentelTV2 do you have the rest of this version? My grandma had it on VHS, recorded from TV, which I haven't been able to find in years. Any more footage would be wonderful!
can you please upload more
Norman Fell as Prince Dauntless!
Actually Dauntless was played by Joseph Bova.
@irishpotatoes I second that! Who has the whole broadcast? Share - pleeeeaaaasseeeee
