This Border Conflict Could Start Africa's Next War?

  • Although, it received little attention from the international media, a border conflict between Ethiopia and Sudan in late 2020 sparked fears of a possible regional war in Northeast Africa.
At the center of this dispute is a region called al-Fashaga, which Sudan claims is part of Al Qadarif State. Ethiopian farmers and militia from the Amhara Region, however, effectively occupied al-Fashaga during the mid-1990s. That being said, with Addis Ababa distracted by the Tigray War, Khartoum seized the opportunity and retook al-Fashaga, expelling thousands of Ethiopians.
This resulted in a still not fully resolved conflict, between the Horn of Africa's two largest countries. It also reignited concerns over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam - a project strongly opposed by Egypt and Sudan - and, following Eritrea's (alleged) intervention, sparked concerns of the conflict spiraling into a regional war.

There will never be true peace until we dismantle these arbitrary rules imposed by colonial powers. We must recognize that borders, drawn without understanding or consideration of the local people, have only divided us. We are one people, and we must share our land and wealth to thrive, just as we did before colonialism disrupted our unity.
It's time to stop being overly nationalistic about borders-they have brought us nothing but conflict. Our coastlines and resources are being squandered due to hate and inflated egos. This is illogical. Instead, we should focus on utilizing what we have to create prosperity, much like the European Union, which has succeeded despite its members' differences.
Let's move beyond outdated, divisive thinking. By collaborating and harnessing our collective potential, we can build a rich, vibrant future for all Africans. Let's stop the hate and start building together. It's time to be smart and strategic about our future.

Stop being so nationalist about borders, it didn't take us anywhere and all the coastline is being wasted out of hate and egos. Too much hate for nothing and illogical thinking. Just focus on how to combine and utilize what we have. We could build on what we have and sell it to the hungry and rich Western world to make cash and get rich like them. The foreigners are benefiting from our hate and division you know. We don't have to like each other but it happened that we are neighbors, so we have no choice but to be smart and work together to make money you know because fundamentally the war is all about that.

Ethiopia and Somalia fought over the Somalis region in Ogaden 1977. Eritrea and Ethiopia war in 1998.
Now Sudan and Ethiopia have land disputes. There is no other African country that has problems with all its neighbors other than Ethiopia. Djibouti and Kenya the only two neighbors don't have outstanding disputes although we heard rumors Ethiopia even claims Kenya under the excuse of Oromo areas in Kenya.

Somaliland will never breakaway from Somalia why because the issue is divisive within the North Somalia.
It's centre one of the Somali clan in the North among multiple Somalia clan who all favour Somalia unity. Those who speak for separation was using tactics like jailing, harassment and deprivation the rights of others. Now the situation get out of hand and it came to a war between some of the unions in the East near Putland vs Somaliland. Also the western region near Djibouti are itching to follow. It very hard to agrue when locals don't want to break up Somali and you try to forced them. Somalis aren't forcing them to stay with Somalia but everyone has stake when North Somalia belong both unions and seperist.
The reason people from the outside think people the North all agreed on one issue is false and over axagration from two cities inhebits in the North.
Also the balance of power in the North Somalia shifted toward North Somalia union clans where some already reclaimed their territory from seperist.

gonna say this here, I legitimately hope theres a peaceful resolution in the Horn of Africa with all the disputes. So many cultures that are fascinating and a vibrant region being torn apart by war is so sad
I wish the best for all the people there. Especially Somaliland, since they've worked to hard to rebuild after what Somalia did to them.

Its geopolitically correct yea. But i can see negotiating ogaden rejoining somalia and somaliland independence happening, a better path for peace in the region. Ethiopia also needs a coastline since the economy is in trouble and millions are at risk.

@@DarthMarr2009 No it is not geopolitically correct at all, Im sick and tired of these outsiders who have no real knowledge to say stuff.. Ethiopia Dosent need a coastline, Eritrea fought for its independance, you saying that ethiopia needs a coastline is actually appaling. Dismissing the self determination of millions because oh look, they could use some sea... Ethiopia as a state is barely functioning its self, with a massive internal conflict happening every other year... Somaliland has 2/3 of its claimed land wanting to join back somalia. Amharas set these Al-Fashga, Wolekayt, Raya, Metekel, Addis Ababa and Dera precious lands at the top priorities of regaining their lost lands and these lands will be Amhara's immediate development agendas. However , Amharas are now in brutal war with the Oromo invaders spearheaded by the existing racist and dictatorship Oromo government. Amharas are now almost concluding the war with the Oromo government with land-fall victory- Amharas will definitely controll Addis by toppling Abiy racist before summer.
Amharas are also about to set a small- scale, short-term and eminent war with the Woyne-Tigray because of the agenda of Wolekayt and Raya Amhara's properties. It has been recalled that Amharas, not Abiy's government, have recently defeated Tigray-Woyne and saved Abiy's government, for the time being.
Then, the Al-Fashga issue will come automatically on the table after just Amharas consolidate all the resources of the country. Then, they hope the Sudan will withdraw troops automatically since it had a number of historical experiences what it meant war with stabilized Amhara.😮

There's no border conflict to begin with. It's a sudanese land which Ethiopian farmers illegally cross the border and settle there
