Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

Thank you very much for this talk.
For myself, I compare my sexual desire almost to intoxication and with this "intoxication" I find that my practice is affected. I find myself being delusional and steering away from the eightfold path and acting with misconduct. So as a lay person, I practice abstinence as much as possible, yet this sexual desire can get very intense, but I have to see it as a teacher to letting it go.

Ask for divine help, ask for wisdom on how to transmute it.
Speak to your body, tell it the spirit is in charge.
Do breath work to help raise it into your heart. Try Joe dispenza’s breath.
This helped me overcome mine when the energy was overwhelming.
I will definitely be posting a video about this as a lot of people struggle with this.
Sending you lots of love and light 🙏

Hello english buddhist monk. Thank you for sharing this. I Am a 28 old woman and I really want to be celibate, i Always felt an atraction for it, and I feel empowered by hearing about celibate life style and how it changes you heart and mind to a higher state. However I do feel a very strong need for companionship, not sexually, But emotionally. So I dont really know what to choose Or what to do.
    Thank you for you videos

Hi dear. Please don't attached with anybody, especially for emotionally needed. Trust me. 😊
The companionship give you temporary happiness but will bring you to unending suffering. There will be an expensive price to pay in this name of companionship. The worry, the betrayal, the anger, the jealousy, the attachment for "atta and nica" concepts, the desire for this and that, etc.
You are your own greatest companionship. Only you and your conscience. You can look for a life as pabajja. Samaneri, atthasilani, etc.
I want to choose that life too but it's a bit too late for me. I understand the value of Buddha teaching only when I am already a mom. I hope when my responsibility towards my kid will be done, I can move forward and start my celibate life..😊

The singing chants sound lovely. I will say that once awakened the noises or words you sing or chant are irrelevant. It’s the making of the sounds that raises Kundalini and arouses the Pineal to secrete Amrita which then propels the Yogi into Supra Consciousness, Christ/Krishna Consciousness.
When I awakened in my mid twenties I was also simply sat comfortable upright on an ordinary Chair chanting “Aum” through my Chakras and autopilot Pranayama long Cobra hissing breaths. This aroused Kundalini and I had the full blown awakening experience..
Tremendous flash imagery beyond Human comprehension in the ultimate Bliss beyond and Plant or Substance I’d ever taken. The Bliss and images etc are not the end goal or a means to an end I do not believe. But it’s an incredible ability to have as I can reside there without ever being ‘bored’ again and I believe that it is a complete purification each time I arouse her and she uncoils.
I lost my ability to do it as I ‘fell from Grace’ and started drinking and abusing my body for a long time. You seem like a great man. I am from England too. I feel like I can learn a lot from you. Thanks 🙏

Thank you, I will have a look at the recommended videos. I looked at some other online stuff on no sexual release either and some recommended a vigorous workout, breathwork to pull the energy from the root chakra to the third eye, taking a cold shower, and to bring full awareness to the experience. So I have some tools to test out. :)

I don't belong to any sect but have lived as a monk for 16 years now. 12 years ago those conserved energies opened a door at the base of the spine and flew up into the crown satisfying the sexual desire without any arousal below the belt. This has been happening multiple times daily for 12 years now. I know this phenomena by the yogic name Urdhvaretas.

I agree that all the desires are similar, from sex, food/drugs, indulgences... but I would see it taken further....Holding your breath long enough will quickly show you a strong desire. Everything you would wish to do would be a desire.
I'm unsure desires need to be overcome in this sense - Maybe just unravelled. Even the practice of not indulging in desires is a desire for control.

Indeed and I won't debate but maybe reframe with modern science discoveries which concur with Buddhist teaching, such as brains scans and mindstates, to dilute the spiritual aspects for those of us who are not ready or skeptical. I'm challenged with the holy spiritual aspects such as past lives. The other teachings such as karma, meditation, developing wisdom, are well aligned with modern thinking making it broadly relatable to some people like myself.

    Hello brother,
I want to ask you what thought process has lead you to giving up a lifestyle of, as I suppose, successfull businessman?
Was it more of a single thought or a line of thought processes that lead into a realisation?
By the way, I have observed trough personal life experiences that egoism and narcissism in action don't work and, sadly, entire sphere of so called self improvement that appears on the internet is filled with delusion, egoism, narcissism and blends all kinds of scammers, naive people and generally people tricked into believing that their lifes are miserable, while their lifes weren't that bad before they discovered content creators telling them that, in general, this modern life sucks.
I would be glad to hear your opinion about it.

Sometimes animals become infested with fleas to the point where it would allowing a great deal of suffering to the animal to not do something about it. Or paralysis ticks which often kill animals. Another grey area would a building with a termite problem which would ruin the building if left untreated. I can't imagine if the monastery had termites that nature would be left to run its course. Or would it? Genuine question.

I was puzzling over how there can be a moral law when there is no Creator. Then it occurred to me that if Being, existence, itself is divine but uncreate then the laws (like the laws of physics and biology) must exist to maintain and regulate the system of Being. The trouble is that the moral law is less obvious than, for instance, the laws of physics. We all know that people who drink, take drugs, live only for pleasure and treat others badly tend to go down hill and often end badly but this often happens to decent people too (through 'bad luck', ill health etc.). Also is killing always wrong? If I have a parasite that's going to kill me then should I not, wisely, take medicine to kill it? If a police marksman sees a gunman walking into a school then should he not shoot the gunman to save the children? A lot to puzzle over!

Why did they set up this monastery next to a highway? The vehicles are going at high speeds making a lot of noise. People listening to a great talk like this in person on on RUclips should not be disturbed. Very annoying.

Only an non returner and an arahant would have no sexual desire. Which i don't think any human beings on earth is nowadays. Otherwise there will be sexual desire. And i think it's natural. Just like being hungry. You can eat when you are hungry and feel no shame. But why for sexual desire?

@@englishmonk empty words with zero meaning... what is happy? isnt it not the state of mind where you able to forget urself and ur inner traumas.. isnt that not the reason why you escaped and run away from life? u just replaced activities and drugs with other activity and drugs. in a sense meditation or 9km walking is nothing more than shooting up heroin and having sex. all those activities bring u a state of mind where u can forget urself. there is an easier way..control your mind and find out who you really are and enjoy playing this purposeless meaningless game. face and ID the inner traumas and start healing urself..

Becoming A monk its not about running away from life its about living your life fully. Life is not what you eat, where you live, your parents, your friends, your hobbies, your job
Thats not life. Life is inside not outside, thats Why meditation is só important. When you do drugs you using it mainly Because you want to run away of your problems But you dont have the courage to leave All the pleasures that you know from what you think ist you life. Exercice is Good for the body became it makes more e receptive to something higher, and makes you use energy is a more beneficial way. Instead of having sex and loosing your creative energy you can use Exercice as means to help you, Just help you concentrate in something better. Even if you are married if you have sex with your partner out of compulsion you will lose your energy Because thats sex doesnt come from your consciousness it comes from your compulsions and needs. You said that he was running away, this man has way more courage Than you. You should learn from him
