Clearly Travis is an expert on sporting clays. That's impressive but even more impressive is his ability to explain why he has the shooter do something and then observe and assess the results.
One of the best instructional videos I've seen, so worth sharing with shooters of all levels. Thank you, Steve, and thank you, Travis. Great work guys.
@@MHFA1981 If you are asking me, I first have to answer your question with a question first. What type of shotgun are you using, a semi-auto or an over/under? If you are using a semi-auto I would recommend a Lt Mod or Mod., or in my case a Muller U2. If you are using an over/under you can usually get by on most courses with an IC/Lt. Mod/Mod combo, or in my case Muller's U1 & U2. You may also want to have more open and tighter constriction chokes available for target presentations that may require them. I'm not Steve Gould so I don't know his preference on the matter.
Timing is great! Just picked up a new Browning 12 featherlight this morning. You have me working on my stance and moving with the bird this afternoon. thank you for sharing!
I had the chance last year to visit one of my best friends at his mansion in the Pine Creek Sporting Club in Okeechobee, FL (now for sale at $14.5M btw). I'd never shot clays before, and having done so, I was totally enamored since I did pretty well. What a blast
My main take from this was that the angle on going away birds decreases as the bird gets nearer the break point, and consequently the lead also decreases. Geat video.
I’m typing it out , before I forget : Support the weight of the gun, with the hands . Move the gun with the hips . Thanks for the video . I tied my best score of 70, two saturdays in a row. Have a tournament tomorrow and Monday . Wish me luck! We’re doing a $65 100 target tournament on Monday called “shoot the moon” at Rocky Creek outdoors in Texarkana .
@@TargetFocusedLifeyou guys helped me a ton. I put up my best scores ever! 84 on sporting clays on Saturday and 85 on Monday . My two friends , B class and Master class shooters , commented on how different I was shooting and said they were proud of my improvements . I have now been invited to an out of state shoot . Thanks a ton for your videos ! My previous scores were 62,67,70 and 70.
I live in South Africa and been struggling to find a coach who can break things down simply for me. This video has been incredibly helpful, a few simple things to focus on and helped me to stop overthinking. I have watched it a few times now and each time something else sticks and my scores are improving as a result. Best part for me was how to connect with the birth then just gently accelerate like a rubber band, stopped me rushing too fast through as I tried to calculate lead. It’s true that the hand/eye coordination just come to the party if you match the speed and line up front. Thanks gents, super grateful!
Awsome instructional vid I have learnt so much from your vids over time and this is one I will definitely keep in my archive and it will be coming out next time I go to practice and dam I wish I could get from New Zealand to Texas to visit Travis clay target range Thanks so much
great vid. Question: 10:38 when exactly do we start and stop our mesh? Starting-- he says when it 'gets to the muzzle' but Im sure we start meshing a bit before that to avoid jerky start or over speed. Finishing-- is it perhaps 20% before break point, ie fully tracking about that amount before break?
Went from 19-50 to 30-50 average almost overnight from your target focused videos, I've kinda hit a wall but have picked up some key points to apply 👍 keep up the great work! One of these day im gonna beat Mr. Jimmy (father in-law) he averages 40's. Im shooting a silver pigeon 686, don't think it quite fits me right but I love the dam thing !
This video explains what I am seeing I am doing wrong. I have developed a fast shot that has me with a hold point too close to the thrower which makes me drive the gun to get ahead after the bird beats me and me then poking at the target. Understanding where a reasonable hold point is and then the focal point being where we first see the clay makes sense. These are basics I will focus on this weekend at the range! Thanks!
Thank you this is invaluable advice. May I ask on the close quartering bird is the thinking mount on the bird and aggressive pull away or mount just in front and stretch? Struggling with consistency on that one.
Most of the top shooters shoot Double Mods. Anthony Matarese jr and Gil Ash talk about shooting double Mods but Matarese says switch to more open chokes if your shooting under 70 than as you scores improve tighten your constriction until you get to Mod/Mod
Most targets can be can be hit with light mod, or the skeet 2 choke, which is the same constriction. You would be surprised how well a light mod "double" or improved cylinder "double" or a combination of the 2 different chokes, will work on most courses.
can you talk about your gear a little bit? your ear protection, your eye protection (and travis', those are sick) and the gun you use. I have a winchester sx4 i bought for hunting can I use this for trap/skeet? The guys at my gun club all use break actions o/u.
Question, when you started shooting at longer range did you change shot size? What shot size is the preferred size for short vs longer clay targets. Thank you.
what about different loads for difference distance shots? i mostly use a 1 oz #8 1400fps loads. but for longer shots i use a 3/4 oz # 7.5 1700 fps load. physics says it works and i get better results as the lead needed is smaller and more like the 1oz./1400fps load.
Don't complicate things. I'd use 7.5s for everything. That way your covered and don't have to decide. And it's been proven that fps doesn't mean anything in the sporting world. It's all a mind thing. You loose most of it in the first 20- 25 yards anyway. Im not pro. But if I put the gun in the right place. It breaks, no matter the cartridge. And remember, smoke balls are cool. But it only takes a break to count.
I am wearing Walkers in the video but I am back to wearing Axil ears now. Just got a pair of their XCOR ears and love them. Link and code are in the description of the video. I believe Travis is wearing Sound Gear custom molded electronics. I have used Sound Gear in the past. Very nice, VERY expensive!
Hoping someone can clarify the hold point when the focal point is not the machine. Is the hold point always 50% from the break point based on the launch machine or is it based on the focal point if you cannot see the launcher? For example if you first see the target after it goes past a tree is the hold point then 50% from the break point based on the location of the focal point (tree) or is it always based off the launcher? Sorry if that is confusing.
Wearing a hat correctly (brim forward) helps with how sunlight affects the eyes. More importantly it is a safety enhancement . Hopefully it will never happen, but falling shot could hit the eyes over the top of safety glasses. The brim forward would prevent this.
Clearly Travis is an expert on sporting clays. That's impressive but even more impressive is his ability to explain why he has the shooter do something and then observe and assess the results.

What choke you suggest in over under for sporting clays

The mark of a good teacher is not how much they know. It's how easy it is to understand while they teach

WOW OH MY GOD YOURE SO INCREDIBLE!! WE'RE SO IMPRESSED!! WOW PLEASE TELL ME MORE!!
@@kdmscarlett2012calm down kiddo.
That’s just simply not true
That fact that Travis could tell he was over the line is impressive in itself.
One of your best. Do some more like this. Travis is a goldmine.

Feather light is a field gun for instinct shooters just go have fun,,dont stress yourself out with instructors
It’s always about having fun Thanks@@assclown4570
Simply one of the best instructional videos on hitting clays..
Glad it was helpful!

I'm new to sporting clays. The opening section about stance was the best part. I think your observation that "the hips move the gun" was a great tip.
I’m typing it out , before I forget :
Support the weight of the gun, with the hands . Move the gun with the hips .

the gum is moved with your body from your ankles, to your sternum. everything above the sternum stays locked in.

Great video. Keep bringing in the best shooters to teach us to get better.
Brilliant video. well explained for a UK novice like myself
Love the Hebrews verses, Steve! And that was a fun video. 👌🏼
One of the most straight forward and easy to understand coaching I’ve found on RUclips. Thanks!
Thank you for a great video. Travis Mears’s ability to explain makes this video important.
This is great! I’m a new clay shooter last year and this training will definitely help me! Thanks guys!
Excellent instructions. I noticed Travis voice cadence is similar to Gil Ash, I wonder if Gil was Travis's coach?
so good! i watch this video several times a year.. to keep reminding me off the principal.
Very helpful. Reinforced what I've been taught and reminded me of what I have to do to be consistent. Thank you.
Thanks so much both of you .what a teacher what a student best video ever watched.thanks again.
Love the video man! Would love to see you give a review to the weatherby orion sxs? Seems like a nice gun at a very attractive price.
What a great video. I just started shooting clays and this is perfect!
Great video. I didn’t know Travis and the range were so close. I live in Midlothian and will have to visit.
Thank both of you. Lots of useful information here.
Great video. Paying attention to the target line is the biggest thing for me. If I can stay focused on that the rest will take care of itself.

Great video and GREAT tips. I’ll certainly be applying these tips to increase my scores from the 70’s to 90’s
Thanks

We agree!
Can't believe anybody could teach you to shoot better. You are the best.
i have shot cowtown (the sc course in the video) 3 or 4 times and i love it i shot pbs every time
Thanks ! I’m in the DFW area and have shot at defender a few times on tournaments. Travis is a guy guy.
This is good. Thank you
I wish you had started by talking about those fine Ranger Shooting glasses, which are required for eye protection. Excellent content, as usual.

Great video! Can you do another that introduces two different targets. I struggle with feet position on multiple targets. Thanks
Move your feet while transitioning to the next target.
will be review of this gun? Looks awesome, i want to buy it :)
That was a beautiful lesson. Also a fantastic shotgun, can someone educate me on what make/model the shotgun is. Thank you

If you can't see the machine. Then it's between the break point, and when you first see it. Unless you have a real short kill window.
No trees! Our birds come from behind, under, over and through trees. Please talk about those situations.

Watch a show bird and figure out where it goes out from behind the obstruction and pick a break point in a good open area
What kind of ear plugs are you wearing?

True in a duck blind but definitely not while shooting trap or clay birds.
