    Analogman!!! I’m a true fuzz junkie have owned over 20 fuzz pedals and my board has his Sunlion, astrotone, and mk 1.5 sun bender, I love them all dearly for different situations. The rca/nkt transistor surface is my #1, it is life changing. I truly believe analog mike knows more about fuzz circuits than anyone else alive. The options, features and tone are second to none and worth the wait for your own build. I’ve never felt more connection with a builder or product

    Thanks for the help in finding the perfect fuzz for me!!!! The Walrus Audio Kangra does it all and then some. With great fuzz tones, filter sweep, auto wah, ring mod, mid boost, plus everything else on this pedal, it becomes endless. In a single pedal you almost get a multi-effects unit without the headache of hidden menus. The Kanga is a secret weapon for funk and cutting through the tones in a large ensemble. Thanks for making the Kangra known to me, Rhett! I truly appreciate it. Looking forward to getting one ASAP

    Back in the 70s, I had the muff fuzz that plugged directly I to my amp, peavey backstage. It lasted about 3 months and cramped out, then bought another, same thing happened.
    Looking for a good fuzz, glad to see this, learning alot.

      You could also try a vick audio 73 rams head if you wanted to give the big muff circuit a try again. The big muff is a great circuit in general, but vintage era muffs are known to have issues. The vick audio will be much more reliable and have a lot less noise. It's fairly inexpensive at 140 new. I would go with it over the reissues from ehx.

    I have another shout for "under the radar fuzz", from Sitek its Fuzzie. Even its Germanium fuzz, it is build to be placed anywhere in signal chain and retain the extreme dynamics of Fuzz. Can go from clean boost, thru broken Tweed sounds to sustaing saxophone tones just by rideing volume on guitar and pick dynamics. And dont cost arm and leg ;).

    I just got my 62nd fuzz pedal, in honor of the first fuzz pedal, the 1962 Maestro Fuzz-Tone: FZ-1. Itching for more... from A to ZZ. Notable: Solidgoldfx 76plus, Way Huge Atreides, Lunastone Red Fuzz 1, Danelectro Eisenhower, EHX Big Muff Pi Triangle. Best "Affordaboard" fuzz: Musiclily Fuzz. The expensive ones, the cheap ones, the midline ones-- they're all good. I've got wacky like the Fuzz Factory or Swarm or Data Corrupter and I've got yer basic Germ Fuzzface-- they all have something going on. I second that JHS 3 Series as a good starter or mainstay. Fuzz is!

    For those who want to tentatively make the jump from overdrives, three gateway fuzzes for me were the MXR Super Badass Variac Fuzz, the Basic Audio Scarab Deluxe (my favorite of the three), and a good ole Rat. You can dial up overdrive-like tones for comfort, but they all enter the fuzz realm as well.

    My absolute favourite fuzz is the Odin Fuzz by Fjord Fuzz (I have the mk 1 with only a volume knob). And it's gorgeous! It's basically a modded foxx tone machine. But it does some of the nastiest (vintage) octave fuzz tones I've ever heard and cleans up lovely with the volume knob on the guitar.

    Hi Rhett- really enjoy your channel. I am a fairly new guitar player (2.5 years) and could use advice of what fuzz to start with. I assume I need to match my OD with the pedal? My gear is simple - Am Prof strat, Boss Katana 50 (modeled to fender reverb type for pedals) and a Strymon sunset OD. While the sunset touches on fuzz, watching these videos makes me think I’m missing something. What type of fuzz would add to what I have? Advice on direction (as it is hard during the pandemic to try before you buy) is appreciated. Again, your channel is very inspiring!!

    Big muff isn't really a fuzz, but IMO is better than any other fuzz. It's got a lovely tone. The notes are clear and concise while still having a hefty amount of distortion. The tone is amazing, especially when added to a non intrusive, low repeat tape style or binson style delay so it cuts off some of the high end harshness and smooths it out.

      100% agree. For Gilmour one, a Hizumitas gives all that thick singing sustain and add a bit if delay and Time is yours.

    • @juicyyy5765
      @juicyyy5765 2 года назад +1

      What would you consider to be the best kind of Big Muff?

    • @gavinw5469
      @gavinw5469 2 года назад +2

      @@juicyyy5765 I'm not an expert by any means, I just know what sounds the best to me. I am currently using the fuzz and delay from the keeley darkside, but that is kinda a different animal, because it pairs the delay or modulation with the fuzz. The fuzz side is a slightly tweaked op amp big muff. The triangle, rams head, op amp, and Russian are considered great options. Do you like pink floyd at all? If you do, a vick audio 73 rams head would be a good choice. It's a high quality clone that can be found for around 120 used on reverb and 145 new. Most of the reissues by Electroharmonix are also good, but spending a little more for the vick audio one is probably worth it. It's just coincidence the keeley darkside uses the opamp big muff. Gilmour never used one, but it sounds great on that pedal.
      A great resource for big muffs is the gilmourish website, and the article on big muffs. It is more oriented for pink floyd fans, but the guy writing the articles(Bjørn) knows his stuff.
      My suggestion would be try some out at a shop near you if there is one close by. Remember, part of the magic is the delay. Preferably a emulation of tape delay or binson type delay. It would be good to test the big muff and the delay at the same time. I would personally stay away from the new big box Electroharmonix. It is not really a great rendition of the circuit.

Not just the tones but the features, the aesthetics- they've got it all going on. But it may "bee" awhile bee-4 I can make that happen. They're not cheap- I wonder if they would trade for home grown honey... I keep bees. My dad got me started when I was growing up- if you've ever bought Henson Spring's Pure Honey- that came from our farm. My dad ran a business selling honey on the side- his primary employment was drafting and machining parts for industrial mining equipment. Once the computers took over that work, he retired and started building guitars and mandolins. But he always kept bees as well, and I still keep a few hives for personal consumption. Only got one right now though- mites killed two hives last season. Where I live though- all I have to do is set a hive out with a starter comb and some honey in it- and a new hive will eventually move in. Life is good in the Appalachians.

      Big muff. Rams head preferably. David Gilmour certainly didn't do drone music, but he did pair his pedal with many many effects, so the big muff has to work well with other modulation pedals. It's pal is the overdriver or powerbooster. It's just a boost pedal that pairs well with a big muff.

      Did you try setting it up so that your default is with the gtr volume rolled pretty far down? The 69 works great for that. Then you have a great clean(ish) tone, and roll the volume up for a range of fuzzy goodness

      @@marcsullivan7987 funny u say. I've recently adopted that amp vol way up and guitar vol down philosophy. Also, playing softer with bigger vol. Getting better tone from amps and pedals. Falling in love all over again...ha ha...

      @@jeremydahm2124 Same here. I setup a new pedalboard with Strymon Sunset into an Iridium. Finding the volume knob the easiest way to go from nice smooth cleans to full on fat breakup. Always thought it was pedals, but volume control is where it’s at. Maybe that means I’m getting better at guitar but I doubt it lol.

    I wonder about fuzz into a compressor. I put fuzz into a distortion pedal and rather liked the way it compressed the sound into something that sounded, I guess, bigger. More alive. This was me in my den with the amp at low volume just liking the way it responded with all of that gain.
    I think the thing the distortion pedal was doing, that I liked, was compression.
