This is a perfect sample of deadwood. The vulgar juxtaposed with beautiful poetic dialogue/monologue. If it were only vulgar, it would be low brow, if only poetic, it would be too artsy fartsy. Together, it makes a masterpiece.

Why is this Brilliant? In the context of the show, one of the hardest men is the always scheming, Al Swearengen. He owns the bar/brothel and has a hand in almost everything that is in Deadwood. There is even a moment when he talks to Dan heart to heart and mentions that it was he and Dan who came out to deadwood to get things started there. He is human, an antihero at times, because we see the struggles he faces but also how he, human after all, deals with the choices. As the episodes go on we see that flip from good to bad to somewhere in-between. We root against and for him, almost in the same episode due to this. It was not so black or white after all and this whole show is brilliant...
But, here we also see this during closed doors or one on one where he processes the inner most thinking, all while doing as he states "You can't suck your thumb, you got to be a grown man about it. Don't say sorry or look back.. No one gives a fuck." This is how he knows he must carry himself, this is his foundation of being a man. His checks and balances. His core. What ever happens, he knows he has to stfu and be a man about it, even when hard choices need to be made; like the Minister suffering and needing to be 'dealt with" in this case.
Further we see when he had Trixie, again with this lady, that he will go into personal history and process things in front of them, but needs to keep power, especially if they seem close or familiar in return. It is a 1 way street often. He is processing things, but also trying to be a man about it. He is being vulnerable and stream of coconsciousness while he is trying to deal with the suffering of the Minister in the camp... but as he gets to the " Shut the fuck up about it & be a fucking man about it" he starts to realize what he must do and he is upset. He turns the dynamic as to not be the "smallest person in the room" and askes her for input, which he comes back with an invalidation and has her preform oral on him while he continues. He had to be a man about the situation, while he was sucking his thumb (so to speak), his checks and balances in play. He has shifted the dynamic and is doing the manly thing as he struggles with the frustration of having to deal with the Minister, which does bother him.
Al then shows a warrant and leaves a breadcrumb "Can you believe 12 hours before you got on the wagon to come here I put my knife in someone's guts?" Then sidesteps to opens up and talk of a venerability that his mother dropped him off at an orphanage back when he was a child. The lady he bought her from was the same lady who was in charge of the orphanage for boys when he was left there. This circles back to the "Did I look back? No. I did what I had to do" and the whole "stfu and be a man about it" that is his foundation justifies an implied killing of revenge (if I understand that implication correctly). After his catharsis and conclusion of oral, he says "anyways" and takes a swig. Another day, another problem, but all get cranked through the filter that is what Al Swearengen is to his core. Everything Checked and Balanced.
    Love Deadwood =)

Swearengen and the preacher is one of my favourite storylines from the show... the only death that was a blessing to both parties. The show was so good at *showing* swearengen as the real leader of the community. Especially when he's faced with tough decisions for the whole town (like whether or not to end the suffering of a dying preacher, dying slowly for all to see). Great acting and great writing. Showing a very important and powerful person in the community blowing off some steam with alcohol and sex. Although not necessarily a dynamo scene, it just further displays the complexity of Al.

His outlook on the harshness of reality well and truly earned and yet he still has his humanity deep down. Such a profound moment of both toughness and vulnerability that aligns perfectly with the oral sex to exemplify the crudeness of the world they both occupy. So much depth that could be made into a book unto itself. Truly a great scene”. Then the other side being “Lol he got a hummer and said fuck a lot. Huhuhuhuhuh”

Hes so good you really cannot distinguish if its his show or olyphants. Mcshane is just a force in this role. Im young and always saw his modern work so i felt him a bit of a redundant character actor but this show completely reversed my bias

I watched this episode with my parents and it felt kind of awkward, but we were all just glued to the direction and the dialogue and it kind of overrode the absolute smut happening along the way. The credits started rolling and we were all silent not really knowing what to say and then my dad just said "Ian... FUCKING McShane, guys." That broke the ice and we had a great philosophical discussion breaking down all the different parts that make up the identity of this show and what they mean in the aggregate.

It is the best show in History. Hbo was new and broke back then. They could not afford all the cgi David Milch had on show (most of that town was cgi -- weird how REAL it all looked). Now hbo has crazy money and told Milch anytime u want to do a two hour finale you can. Every actor is still beautiful excluding the hot Powers Booth (best dresser and pimp) died! Milch do this before somebody else dies. I have no idea if Milch is back on dope!
