What a great tribute to the history and heritage that is Sutliff, thank you!
Although the equipment and property may be disposed of by STG, I sure hope that the amazing people of the company didn’t have to do anything like a non compete agreement.
Equipment can be reproduced and new factories can be assembled, but the people and knowledge are the hardest to reproduce. I hope that the workers who carried the Sutliff/Macbaren lines can band together or go to another existing tobacco company who isn’t afraid to release a ton of blends to have an outlet for their passion.
Even though it is the darkest hour, my hope is somehow there is a brighter one ahead. With every ending there will be some kind of next chapter if there’s someone to carry on. May God bless all the people of Sutliff who are working to figure out their next steps.

I was a tobacconist, and have been a pipe smoker and blender for 40 years. Sutliff was the go to tobacco for my components, and they were excellent tobaccos to use and smoke. And I was proud to use tobacco from such a storied US company. What STG has done is horrible I don’t have the words to describe this loss. Thank you, Sutliff. Hearing that Sutliff is not only being shut down, but their entire production capability being destroyed to prevent other Americans from carrying on the legacy is beyond infuriating and beyond disrespectful to the American tobacco smoker. It’s devastating to see how disposable our way of life is to European corporate greed. This video was excellent. You have a talent for shining light on the parts few see or consider. Thank you for the history lesson and the production value. It is my solemn hope Americans will rebuild what has been mismanaged and finally lost, but I have to admit I am not optimistic given the corporate sabotage on full display with this merger purely meant to destroy, not create.

"Our way of life" is destroyed by our own corporate greed. How many American companies shifted our jobs to foriegn countries all in the name of corporate greed. If we have no problem selling out our own why be surprised when other countries do it to us. Even if they would not destroy the equipment of Sutliff who do you suggest has enough money to take that equipment and start a business with the over regulation in America concerning tobacco? Sutliff and MacBaren put themselves into this position. We all know that if everyone of us was running STG and saw a chance to take out a competitor we would do the exact same thing.

Thank you Adam. This is a gut-wrenching event with more than enough sadness and regret to go around. You like to think that hard work, loyalty and dedication are rewarded but in Sutliff's case, they effectively punished for being successful. I guess even a whiff of competition to the parent company can't be tolerated. I think of Sutliff like a fine old winery, an artisanal business. Let's say, a mega corporation comes in and buys out a beloved old winery, rips out the 200 year old vineyards, fires the wine makers and destroys the equipment. Is it a simple business decision? The result is less competition and less choice for the consumer. That winery can never be replaced, it's gone forever. I understand we are in an environment of difficult and restrictive regulations and that's a factor. But it isn't the reason to close the business today. And how many pipe tobacco manufacturers does that leave in the US? One. Around the world? Maybe 5 with one company (STG) having about 90% of the market.

All of us pipe smokers owe a debt of thanks, companies like Sutliff and Macbaren for their legendary cotributions to the hobby. Having said that I must point out that especially in the example of Sutliff they shot themselves in the foot numerous times in the past 20 years or so by flooding the market with dozens if not hundrreds of new blends which for the most part were very repetitive of one another. Having capitalized on a whole new generation of enthusiastic pipe smokers the vast majority of whom were chomping at the bit to try every new "cherry glop", creme brulee or black cordial flavored tobacco, and then came to their senses and moved on to blends with some natural Virginia or English flavor profiles instead of offering a few new natural blends, Sutliff kept turning out more and more highly infused aromatics I assume to continue capturing the new smoker market and quickly had a grossly bloated inventory which could not possibly be profitable. In walks STG and the rest is history, Why is STG keeping 4 of the most highly aromatic blends in the bulk stable? Simply because they are intent on continuing the practice of milking the market of new , aromatic loving pipe smokers until that market is exhausted, and it will happen eventually, this industry goes through very substantial economic booms and downturns. Just take a look at the Tinderbox Tobacco franchise stores from the 1970's, by 1985 there were over 135 stores in the chain, by 2014 there were about a dozen left. Again thank you Sutliff for your legendary contributions to the hobby, sadly you were the victim of some very poor decision making in the past few years.

With the loss of Mac Baren and Sutliff, the world is ever closer to losing the entire pipe tobacco industry. With so much consolidated in foreign countries laden heavily with regulation meant to stamp out the industry itself, it feels it’s all only a matter of time before it’s all gone someday. I hope America doesn’t give up our timeless tradition so easily and others will rise to lead the industry here at home again.

My very first purchases of pipe tobacco were all Sutliff blends. I was so inexperienced that I figured more was better without trying anything. A happy accident which led to me purchasing some bulk that I’ve still had around for over 6 years. All the collecting really makes you take baby steps in emptying your reserves. The sadness of this is too much for words. I love tobacco. I love smoking. The pipe is meant as a leisurely relaxation tool, and let’s be honest, it makes any type of work more enjoyable as well. This loss can’t go unanswered. Something tells me C&H will pick up the pace a bit. But my god. What a terrible loss for America. With all do respect, f*** STC.

STG is so short sighted with this move. With the shutting down of Sutliff and Mac Baren as a whole it'll force smaller places to shut down. Without access to these stores less people will get into pipe smoking and from there less people will purchase from the STG brands.
A monopoly does not work when the industry you control is being strung up by aggressive regulation.
The only way STG comes out on top is if they just re-open it under a different brand/name or if they are planning on moving their group and farms to the US. Hedging their bets on EU regulation is possibly the worst business move I have ever scene, the UK has literally announced that they plan to totally ban smoking - in all forms- within the decade.
I don't really want to blame the family that sold to STG because why would they ever even humor the idea that STG would just nuke one of their biggest sources of returning consumers. Not only on the sense that access will now drop, but also in optics. This just looks really really bad, especially without explanation or forewarning that wasn't in industry emails.

Within the last couple years cigar companies such as Room 101, Alec and Bradly have been bought by STG, but are still producing their products. Are these companies receiving an offer they can’t refuse? I don’t get it.

    • @GetPiped
      @GetPiped  16 дней назад +1

@@rickytapp3990 cigars are profitable and pipe tobacco is very much not so.
Sure it technically is, but to a company like STG, pipe tobacco is the lemonade stand out front that the girls are working. Cigars, snuff, and nicotine pouches are the 9-5 that “pays the bills and pays for the nice house and cars.”
Purchasing and scrapping these pipe tobacco brands is a slow initiative that wasn’t designed to own a second lemonade stand, but rather to close up the other two lemonade stands that were competing. Now, we can all get lemonade from one stand in the neighborhood, or we can pick up the profitable cigars, snuff, or nic pouches

@@GetPiped well sad, sir. I appreciate the reply. I am newer to pipe smoking and this is definitely a shame to see. What about our favorite house blends sold at our local tobacconist? I don’t know, but I can only imagine that it’s a Sutliff product, will this have a negative impact? Thanks

Drew Estate was bought out by Swisher and proceeded to morph from a can't miss brand into... well, Swisher. After 10+ years of DE smokes, the whole line went South for me and I never bought again. Why do these companies do this? It's a deal with the devil. So sad about Sutliff.

It sucks that stg is just getting rid of sutliff and mac barren but You all need to understand that no one put a gun to the owners head and forced them to sell sutliff and mac barren. They did so on their own free will.

@@bussydestroyerxxlowkeynoca8994 well Sutliff had no say. They were bought by Mac Baren over a decade ago and had a beautiful relationship. But with the passing of Henrik, the family didn’t care about the company and preferred the instant small profit for selling the company.
Sutliff had no say. Which is why this is a Sutliff tribute and not a Mac Baren tribute, per se.

A nice tribute to Sutliff, however the ending part shooting the tobacco was completely out of touch in my opinion, also would've been much more fitting to include more parts showing people who worked at this great company instead of you on the screen. Feels like using the demise of the company and the topic's current high interest in the community for personal gain. Started very nice and well crafted, but ended like a silly vlog from those premature attention seekers on tiktok.
