Something satisfying about running the old saws. Like cruising in an old car, don't have to go fast, just enjoy the moment. That was a crazy piece of wood, the way it was binding up.
YEAH! All the pressure was off it after the first few cuts, but it still kept twisting on me and pinching my chain! I didn't know what the heck was going on. But that whole tree is twisted. Some friends have mentioned that it's gonna make a lot of lumber...I'm like, no way in hell I'm turning this tree into lumber...it'll be the worst warping, twisting, splitting, useless lumber ever! Firewood and Wack-Offs is all its good for!
My dad said fresh oak has a tendency to fall back on itself and pinch the bar anyways so I bet that thing was a doozy I’ll twisted like that! good job though brother!
My dad had this exact saw from the seventies and I used it myself until a friend of mine bought a 028 Stihl and literally covered me up with his saw chips! He cut 2-3 Sticks to my one! He traded up to an 028 super and sold me his 2 yr old Stihl. Haven't owned Nothing but Stihl since! Nice to see the old saw running though!
I hear stories like this alot. One brand beats another, and then you never look back. The 028 is a great saw, and the 028 Super is even better. Far superior to the old 306a. I just hope you can understand that other brands can be great too. This old Poulan 306a is a turd, but still fun to run. All the brands had their good saws and their turd saws. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that Stihl is the best without exception. You can like them the best...but to think they will outperform others just because they are Stihl is a mistake. Stihl makes turds too.
@@novicelumberjack I totally agree sir, and I meant no offense. I should have said Stihl is my favorite brand. I actually had one Stihl that was junk! A 029 farm boss. There's Lot's of good saws out there! Husqvarna is really popular around here in Kentucky. Have a blessed day!

Hello there, so i saw that the saw kept binding up on the tree and i think i have a conclusion why its binding up, this happened to me once before I was running a stihl ms 250 and as I was cutting the chain kept binding up on me and I had to keep spinning the chain on the log like you are with the 306a, and I found out that my 250 had a very bad sprocket and every time that the chain would spin the chain would get pinched on the sprocket and I would have to keep spinning the chain manually to get it unpinched from the sprocket so I'm not saying it could possibly be but maybe check the sprocket and see if the sprocket went bad and that could be the reason why your saw is pinching.
Hope someone can answer this question for me. At the times it looked like your saw was locked up with a chain brake and you loosened it by raking the bottom of the bar on the tree trunk, what was going on inside the saw. Did the chain jump out of the sprocket. Also, does the internal automatic oiler lube anything other than the chain and bar?
It could have been two different things from what I know. #1. I wasn't thinking about oiling the bar, the automatic oiler usually takes care of that...but, this saws oiler may not have been working correctly or it just wasn't enough. It was never meant to run a 24" bar. Towards the end of the video, you'll notice that it finally occurs to me that I should be pumping the manual oiler. #2. I think the more likely culprit was binding due to wood chips clogging up in the sprocket or right where the chain starts to slide into the top of the bar. Lots of different saws have a poor time expelling chips. This seems to be one of those saws. Low RPM combined with a clutch cover that doesn't have enough room...it can cause problems.

The 245a was a huge step up from the 306a.

I think 80s saws are my limit to running older saws. Them older saws just dont sound great to me.
