- This has been long overdue for some of us modellers, last one was the great Dynavector model (Vacform kit)
Thankfully Airfix has hit the spot, it's a quality Gannet waiting to be built.
This is just a quick overview video. I'll let the other channels go into better detail about great this kit. Хобби
I saw the pre-release builds at Telford too (on the Saturday), stunning looking. Safe to say that Airfix really have strived in recent years and are producing the kits modellers want with the quality they deserve.
Wow. Airfix really is a new company with all these great kits. Very nice.
I love kits like this. An ordinary level of skill produces a super looking result. Their Javelin was another perfect example of this!
Airfix look like they are upping their game, lovely to see. This looks a beauty.
Thank you for your video, as an Aussie the only thing disappointing is there isn't any Royal Australian Navy markings, so an aftermarket decal sheet will be next after the kit purchase.
Can't wait to see your build on this. The post war FAA aircraft like this are not often tooled.
Nice one Greg, this kit is on my to-do list. Such an unusual looking aircraft, has to be done.
Hope you will build it soon. Can‘t wait to see it.Thanks for you‘r buildings, love them.
Lovely looking kit, scheme C looks nice with yellow and black ID stripes. Hoping you'll be doing a build video on this one!
I've got Ideas which is never good for me 😂
Thanks Greg. This interesting kit looks like a fun, challenging build. However, I am in two minds as to whether I should get one. 1/48 takes up a lot more room and space is running out. I am really eager to see you build this one.
Eager as well, and soon!
Greetings from Canada. Thanks for the review. I am glad to see the panel lines are not trench deep like I have seen in too many
Airfix releases. Looks like a great kit.
Lord the Ganet... A face only a mother could love, then there's the model... This could be interesting to watch you build...
Just waiting for my kit to arrive, really looking forward to it getting here.
Looking forward for this build video.😊
Very interesting looking aircraft. Would look good in the display cabinet with wings folded.
Looks very nice brill, I will enjoy your build video Greg. 👍
What an interesting aircraft. Looking forward to this one.
Exciting! Can't wait for the build video! Imagining you'll be making many enhancements of your own to it as well :)
It does need it in certain areas.
@@GregsModels Nothing a bit of photo-etch and wire can't fix! And on the bright side, you won't have to face your mortal enemy, raised panel line detail, on this one.
@@stuff31 😂
@@GregsModels Hope you enjoy the build!
Thanks for the quick look inside the box. I agree it is a well done and very detailed kit. The one thing that for me did not stand out was the crew figure, it looked softly molded and kind of glossy almost as though it was made by someone else. I hope this is going to be your next build I'd like to see if you choose the folded wing option.
The figures need replacing, weakest point so far with this kit. And the wings will be folded. The Gannet looks good in this guise.
@@GregsModels and only one crew figure I assume? Better not to bother maybe, as I appreciate it's an added cost and complexity.
Regarding my earlier comment about part A5, the extra weight "bucket", someone asked Airfix about it and they were aware of it. However, with it installed they still couldn't cram enough weight into it to prevent tail sitting. The less dense plastic was taking up space that could more usefully hold nose weight. Looks like I'll be cramming some more lead pellets everywhere else I can find space.
I just about crammed in 70 grams, I gave a little extra, adding some to the inner cowl. If I drop this it will go though the floor with ease😂
Loved the review Greg, looks a great kit and hope you make it soon, but no paint brush finishes😀😀
Jason 🇬🇧
Hello Greg,
Je suis sûr que vous allez encore réaliser une merveille de ce kit.
We will be expecting your usual first class result!
Fingers crossed!
Can’t wait for mine. Thanks for the look…..makes me want to sit at the door until mine arrives.
Well worth the wait👍
Oh sweet! ...I've been wondering about this kit. I can't wait to see your build! ...When are planning to upload? 😋
And that's how to do a kit preview/box opening. 👍🏻
Looks great. I'm going to hold off for the AEW version that must surely follow... If I'm going to build an ungainly-looking aircraft, it has to be the most ungainly-looking 😂
Whilst I'm really glad they've released a 1/48 Gannet, on a personal level I'd rather they'd produced the AEW3. Sadly I think the differences between the two are such that they'd need new moulds?
@@MisterHampshire maybe an extra sprue?
@@typhoon2827 that would be normal yes, but other than the fuselage sides which are very different - and here I very much stand to be corrected - I have an idea the wings differ too. Overall, I think an AEW3 version would need tooling of its own, rather than an extra sprue.
@@MisterHampshire I've got a long wait then.
I'd of preferred the AEW one, hope it's on the cards. It would need a completely new fuselage👍
For anyone building the 1/48 Airfix Gannet, there is a part, A5, not mentioned in the instructions. This would appear to be another "weight box" that fits under the cockpit forward of the weapons bay bulkhead, A9. It doesn't appear to exceed the weight position limit shown in an inset in step 23.
Regarding part A5, the extra weight "bucket", someone asked Airfix about it and they were aware of it. Nice review Greg, I'm hoping mine will arrive today 🤔😏👍
The quality of the Airfix kits just keeps getting better👍
It looks like a similar gannet Revell kit which I have built. But that one was 1/72. It is a really nice model and nice plane.
saw it at telford too. mine arrives wednesday.
Hi Greg they used to have one of these as a gate guardian near the technical college where I used to live in north Wales. It's not the most attractive aircraft in the world but I'm looking forward to watching you build it. Maybe I'll like it a little more then?
Best wishes to you from NZ.
👍😎
I live in North Wales, a few tech's had aircraft gate guardians, which one were you at?
I knew it as Kelserton College but I wasn't a student there I used to drive past it everyday. I think the students used it for practicing on, I'm not sure what happened to it in the end.
Boy, how i wish they' d made a Scimitar
I've been looking forward to to a new tool Gannet since I threw the Revell one back into the box from whence it crawled. This is going to be SO fun to build. But, the perennial question is: Why can't airfix just leave out the figures if they don't want to devote the time to making good ones?
Very good question!
Really looking forwad to you building this one. I've seen a few attempts already, but want to see how the master does it!
T5 ?
Not sure what T5 means? I didn't want to name any names, as that would be a little unfair!@@GregsModels
Trainer Mk.5
I'd trust you to unbox/critique a lot more than some other RUclipsrs Greg, you focus on the salient points instead of reading out the serial numbers on the outside of the box or telling us the plastic is midgrey etc... I've one on pre-order as my uncle served in the FAA on the carriers where Gannets were to be found, and really want to make one (and maybe another if the AEW version appears!) I hope you enjoy building yours.
The AEW is the one I want, hopefully Airfix may do this. Although it means a completely new body.
🔥🔥🔥
The external reinforcement ribs don't seem to be present on all Gannets. Visible e.g. on the illustration photo of the czech master kit wing fold. Not present on some in-flight photos showing the upper wing clearly. Might be a later addition. They appear to be quite a bit thicker on the model.than the real thing.
cool 🛩
Before watching it entirely: this is not fair!...
I can't find it in my neck of the woods yet.
Edit: Thanks! Hopefully you will grace us with the build too. 🙂
Should be very soon🤞
When are you building it? this is going to be great
Soon I hope, no promises.
May I ask you a question? I bought an old model airplane at a garage sale a few weeks ago. A 1/48.1 BF 109 B made by Cygnus (Japanese?). I looks to be complete but it is an old model. Glued on diagram of the plane on a plain white heavy carboard box. I can't find anything on this company. It appears to be 1960's or early 70's production. I'm wondering if it is a collectable model?
Have you tried Scalemates on line
@@GregsModels No, but thanks.
Look very nice and cleverly thinked. Gannet is one of these planes which are so ugly, that they are beautiful. ;) And probably one of the last planes with Malcolm hoods. I hope building it will be very great for You. All the best for You! ;)
Thanks 😎
Looks encouraging but it will need belts or seat replacements
Seeing one of these things with its wings folded up is a sight to behold indeed. Gannets are like mythical creatures, they should not be able to fly.
You can probably say the same to some of the Post War RAF's aircraft too along with the Fleet Air Arm.
Come on Greg lets get cracking mines on its way.........👌
I'm still deciding on what colour scheme to have. I don't want to pick the three Airfix has gone for, not complaining.
Cannot wait to get my sausage fingers on this kit
Looks impressive, but can we have it in 1/72 please Airfix , I don't build 1/48 😢
Ok I will talk to Airfix see what they can do 🤓
@@Captain-Nostromo 🤣
Trumpeter, Sword and Revell each produce a 1/72 Gannet.
An ugly/beautiful aircraft.A cursory first glance and it looks like a winner.Go Greg!
Looks good, pity not 1/32 scale though, beast of an aircraft, yup one of the ugliest pretty, or vise versa aircraft designed! Strange contra-rotating propeller concept never really took off - ( no pun) except for one or two other aircraft, look forward to build video!
The Twin Mamba concept with the option to shut one prop off worked very well for the Gannet, giving extremely long loitering times. Not many usage profiles would benefit from such a thing, so it's not surprising that you don't see it a lot.
Does it actually fit together? I am I going to have a fit when a very expensive kit goes together like a pig? I only really trust Tamiya with 1:48 aircraft. Overcomplicated details that f*** up my build, no thanks. That's what worries me. I love this aircraft. What a funky brute.
Until recent years I'd agree with you, but, I have to say, Airfix are trying to shake off their well-deserved negative reputation and have produced some great kits of late. Yes they've a way to go before they can justifiably compete with Tamiya, but, having finished the new 1/48 Sea King (and last year the 1/48 new Buccaneer) I'm happy to take a chance on this new Gannet.
Good grief Ye Olde Airfix aircrew in meditative pose.😂😅😂
I'd be annoyed about the damaged parts
still not learning anything about packing then 🤦🏻♂️
A stunning looking model of an ugly aircraft. It looks like Airfix has done it again. 🙏
Why Airfix pool their resources on such an ugly aircraft! Give me a 1/72 Vickers VC-10 any day, A decent 1/72 VC-10 will sell like hot cakes!!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@@antonrudenham3259exactly my words
You can always change the channel, if it bothers you that much. Personally I think it’s a brilliant subject.
I agree that the aircraft itself is ugly but that doesn't mean it's not interesting or that it's a bad kit. Just look at most Russian aircraft lol
Because Airfix is British and they're playing to the home team.
I've always liked this aircraft and for decades all that was available was a vac kit
I think they may have something to do with the wind flow over the wings at high altitude and mayb 3:26 e low speede
Thanks for that, they do look odd!
