Totally agree sir . They were nothing but young people starting out with what I think is a great product . The market for this is huge , not just ramblers but car owners that get stuck in snow and have to walk home etc etc .

Barney Clifton you have to gain a foothold at home before you can just start selling stuff abroad. Also, given their tiny margins and shipping costs etc it may even render the option to ship to certain countries to be pointless.
this is the figure from the ramblers association - 19.7 million adults in England now walk for leisure* (Sport England, 2019) *taken part in walking for leisure as an activity twice in the last 28 days but anyway, wouldn't people that are just casually interested in walking be interested in this product, or really anyone that might worry about getting stranded in the cold? people could just leave it in their car for emergencies.
@YouStink You're really insulting the intelligence and rationale of a £40 million net worth business woman? Cool. I'm going use some deductive reasoning and say I'd rather have her brain and bank account than yours 😂
Surviva Jak is still trading and is still Profitable! Imagine that from 2009 to today their still smashing it! I am extremely happy for this couple! Deborah really has tremendous instinct for backing this couple and for defending them. So happy for em.
Honestly, I'm not sure of how great a product it really is. Given the realistic size of the market (how many people are realistically worried about and otherwise unable to combat hypothermia?) It's essentially a sheet of Mylar that's tied to the rudimentary shape of a hooded shroud. It'd be more impressive if it was perhaps a line of clothing made from regular fabrics with the Mylar interwoven, or something. As it is, I'm honestly shocked it got an offer of investment at all.
I'm wondering if any of the "I'm outs" have ever been caught out in severe cold. I will be buying 5 for sure..... 2 to stay in rucksacks, 2 to go in my van and 1 to go under the seat on my motorbike. As an experienced mountaineer and rockclimber in the past and now a rambling easy stuff walker, camper, kayaker and keen motorcyclist I can see the value of a compact lightweight "Jacket" far superior alternative to a half baking sheet product.
I live in sunny Queensland Australia and would add them to my car's first aid kit for the same reasons. Heck I could see them being added to the Ambulance as a consumable and also to fire brigade etc. The silver blanket is frankly useless in most cases. their design is brilliant.
The way the dragons behave sometimes is as if they have never made business mistakes. It's almost as if they want a ready oven ideal business and people- I think it's alot easier to convince your bank that you have been working with for a while for low rate loan. Obviously that doesn't come with all the expertise a dragon brings but it seems to me like it's making a deal with the devil.
They made one of the cardinal sins of not sanity checking which is a giant red flag in any endevear, showing a lack of thinking ability. It's the same with math and physics, if you have a question about "your grandma walks to the store which is 500 meters away and arrived in 8 minutes, how fast did she walk?" and answer "100000km/h" then you either had a fundamental lack of understanding or a lack of critical thinking by not sanity checking your numbers.
Peter saying "show up at their headquarters with products and demand to speak to someone" sounds like the naivety of boomers saying going to give out CVs in person unsolicited is a good idea.
My uncle who is a successful businessman told me/everyone exactly to do the latter. Apart from Covid, why are you against it? So I can feed that back :)
@@amyk9813 I’ll give a few reasons! :) 1) you hand them a paper with you’re name on it and that paper floats about awkwardly with no one knowing what to do with it. Your name therefore becomes synonymous with getting in the way or being a nuisance. 2) It gives a kind of desperate vibe, like you’re posting pictures of a missing puppy. You want to feel like you’re applying for an area you’re specialised in, not anyone who will take the time to read your cv 3) it seems conceited and arrogant, to walk into a place of business and expect them to stop and pay attention to you. Showing up in person feels like the equivalent of cutting in a line, people are waiting their turn by applying to the appropriate advert 4) everything is digital now, so handing a CV in a hard copy may look archaic and, again, cement your name as an nuisance if they don’t store hard copies Hope that helps!
@@amyk9813 I remember when I was looking for jobs a few years ago my parents demanded that I do it when I wasn't having luck elsewhere online. The responses I got from quite a lot of places is that it's just company policy that they can't take an in person CV even if there is a listing active because they want people to go through the proper channels and none of the staff that handle any of that stuff work locally to the store or business on the whole (unless it's a very small business). Most staff were just confused and said the best option is to look on the website. I went to a lot of places in my town, and I think the only one that even took one off me was someone working in a coffee shop chain and I think they just felt awkward and wanted to be polite.
Oh and my uncle always used to tell me about how he walked into the offices of this big company and they gave him a job, but that was like in the 80s and recruitment / HR wasn't as formalised as it is now - and there wasn't the technology factor of the Internet / smartphones etc

That was an unnecessary roasting for two clearly young entrepreneurs. Tell them what they did wrong, yes. But to continue making the point again and again was unneeded.
They handled the barrage really well considering how young and inexperienced they are. They’re cluey kids and they just need guidance. They seem like quick learners and they’ve only been in business for 4 months! The sharks for some reason were really overly harsh although I understand a reality check is important as well but compared to other contestants they at least had an innovative product and had asked some of the necessary questions.

She can be sometimes and other times not. In one episode Duncan tried to help an entrepreneur explain his business proposition as Deborah just wasn’t getting it, and she had a go at Duncan for stepping in and helping him. She is also trying to build property on land that local residents have used as a park for years, and even though the residents are desperate to keep it for their children to play in, the heartless woman is battling with them to get her way.
Disagreed, she only wants to help people if she believes she can make financial gain. That isn't helping people that's called business. In business theres no helping people because you love them, she offers them 45%; which is more then most bank investors would ask and she will still not even be there physically or heavily involved in the business, as its just way too small for her, she will give it to one of her men to look after. Im not saying that she doesnt add value to your business, im just saying shes not there for charity or 'to help people'
@@HailieSelassII020 Exactly, it's cringeworthy to think otherwise. She is worse than the other Dragons when she doesn't see money to be made. Just watch her aggressive take on Tangle Teezers.

Even if she didn’t invest, at least she didn’t rip them to shreds like the others. They were just mean.
Some of the dragons smelt weakness in them and obviously pounced for a t.v moment. It was pretty awkward seeing the woman leaning on the guy for the rebutals, who was also bricking it and could barely form a response. He even asked her 'can you jump in and help?' - no response.
What a horrible negotiation tactic! Would you please maybe please think about please going from 45% to 40% we will need loads of help from you as well, but please? Oh, you won’t? GREAT! Take 45% then.
The problem is that they knew that Deborah was very likely to back out because she really wasnt sure. In the past dragons have been quite punishing when someone tries to negotiate from a position that is not strong enough to negotiate from. You can see it from the moment Deborah advised them not to add anything as she knew at that point it was likely that if they continued to reach for words, it could do more harm then good.
Starswept_Dusk if that was really their mindset(she might back out) then they would have just accepted it from the start. she was setting them up to feel like it was the only option(which it was - in the den) and she could see how desperate they looked. They should have come back with a 3rd each, equal partners, we’re in it together blah blah. That would have served them better. At the very least she would have come down to 40. But their approach was literally sheer desperation, there was absolutely no need for Deborah to accept it.
Good for Deborah for standing up for them. Even as inexperienced as they are, without an investor in 5 months they would have whipped themselves into shape. I am not sure as how the pressure cooker is with Deborah but it's all about bringing elementary to pro season athletes, you learn as you go.
The dragons have been in the game so long, and came in at a different point in time anyway. These days it is very hard to get that first foot in the door, regardless of how persistent you are or how good your product is. In fact, a lot of companies try to make it as hard as possible for anyone to just turn up with a product, because they see it as try-hards spruiking products they are most probably not interested in, so a waste of their time. Most of the value in a dragon is not their money - that could be sourced through a bank loan - but their contacts and expertise.
Anyone know what happened to this company. As a “Walker” I know a lot of campers and they don’t have this product. The survival blanket can be used instead or under a tarp which is what survivalists experts teach. Also these blankets used wrongly can actually increase hypothermia. Why did no one mention patenting or trademarks???
The pitches are all much longer, and edited down to what you see on TV. I'm sure they discussed trademark and patent, it just wasn't interesting enough to make the cut.
@@marianikolopoulou2986 It's true. I was hiking in the UK last January and after the first storm hit I put this very jacket on and did what I thought was commonsense by packing myself out with snow. Sometimes I wonder if the dragons see a great idea and rubbish it so that they can produce their own, given that they have got all the experience, distribution networks, contacts etc. already. Or that a potential product might threaten their own businesses or investments as far as their personal profit grab goes. The one where the "contestants" had an idea for bottled water that aimed at reducing plastic waste was a classic. This is a great idea that I'm surprised no-one in the room thought could be manufactured for the world wide market; mountaineers, trampers, campers, first aid kits, schools (field trips) etc. Not just Britain's "ramblers", whoever they might be. No excuse for the dragon's to be so hostile and rude either! As if they randomly approached them for their money in a social setting outside of the context of the show or something.

Amazing product!!! The offer is ok. I think that the other dragons like the idea so much they were planning to discredit this young people and make they own savejack!
In the time this clip was playing I was able to ascertain that their is 9.3 million people in the UK walk as recreational walkers walking at least 30mins every four weeks, nearly 3 million walk weekly as ramblers and this is spread over all age groups, the European average is slightly higher with similar percentages walking at least 30 mins fortnightly and 22% of all walkers regarded as ramblers, took 2 mins.

Plus things like legal protection (patent?) and item's functionality, durability, quality etc. which weren't touched upon, but are super relevant considerations. Protection against hypothermia was claimed too, that seems pretty big to me so again shouldn't be overlooked as a factor when it comes to marketing the product.
@@Albimar17 well a foil blanket is meant to keep you warm, there's no guarantee it will protect you against hypothermia unless you use it correctly. It would be the same for this product also; they never made the claim it protects against hypothermia.
Made me feel uncomfortable - bullying behaviour. I thought she was going to cry. Seems disproportionate compared to time discussing the product. Good luck to them!
Of course it’s not bullying. She couldn’t hack it plus she didn’t bother to do their research properly. It’s the entrepreneurs fault
@@caitlinx3816 In fact, I think they specified the term "walker" on purpose so they could say they had a bigger market than there is. 50% of the population does not take long hikes in nature where they would need such a product.
You need to try leave your bedroom.
Two lovely young people, I particularly liked the ‘gracious’ comment from the girl, very polite and mannerly indeed, I hope they’ve progress well in their business and careers since this presentation
Being gracious means she thought Deborah didn't deserve to get the deal.
Idk, she kind of threw her partner under the bus imo, when duncan was asking about their business-evaluation he had a hard time explaining it and asked for help and all she did was give him deathstares, then after him struggling to explain she gives him the look of 'this is your part and you screwed it up'.
@@HailieSelassII020 she probably just couldn't help
I am surprised that Peter thinks it is so easy to get the buyers name. I have many years experience in business and when I found myself in this position of needing to find the names of buyers for retail outlets, I had a lot of difficulty. The lady was being honest and at the end of the day, I think the most interesting thing about a dragon is to get access to their address book.
I am in sales for FMCG, buyers that stock our products most of the time don’t even talk to me and reply to my emails.... they are lazy and have it easy. They also don’t get any bad press for bringing in products that don’t sell....
It is easy, for him
@@watzon151 From the buyer's perspective, they probably get dozens or even hundreds of cold calls a week. If they replied to every single one, they would have no time left to actually do their job.
Such genuinely nice, polite, well-composed people. It is so sad that some people are so horrible and dismissive towards them and get hung up on a simple mis-estimate.
Rich entitled Peter was particularly rude to them two.
Amongst the most disgusting behaviour from the dragons on any episode.
Totally agree sir . They were nothing but young people starting out with what I think is a great product . The market for this is huge , not just ramblers but car owners that get stuck in snow and have to walk home etc etc .
Unfortunately it was to be expected with that lovely creature Theo. What a tosspot
no.. what would be disgusting would be if one of the Dragons dishonestly negotiated a deal that screwed over an entrepreneur.. in this case all they did was honestly and forthrightly express their opinions - which is what honestly and effectively doing business is all about..
@@Mark64W yeah that was my problem, the product could genuinely save lives which is more important to me than making money. But I guess that’s why I’m not on dragons den lmao
There's a reason they call him Theo The Fetus...
The moment they said there were 38 million walkers in the UK we all knew they were finished
Yeah because they forgot everyone else that may want one, and other parts of the world.
Barney Clifton you have to gain a foothold at home before you can just start selling stuff abroad. Also, given their tiny margins and shipping costs etc it may even render the option to ship to certain countries to be pointless.
I walk to my car on my driveway, does that make me a walker?
Sir Hingle McCringleberry indeed, Sir McCringleberry, indeed. Good day, Sir.
this is the figure from the ramblers association - 19.7 million adults in England now walk for leisure* (Sport England, 2019) *taken part in walking for leisure as an activity twice in the last 28 days
but anyway, wouldn't people that are just casually interested in walking be interested in this product, or really anyone that might worry about getting stranded in the cold? people could just leave it in their car for emergencies.
Wasn't a click-baitey title, wow that was a surprising turnaround after the barrage they'd received from the other Dragons 😯
@YouStink jealous much
@YouStink You're really insulting the intelligence and rationale of a £40 million net worth business woman? Cool. I'm going use some deductive reasoning and say I'd rather have her brain and bank account than yours 😂
The dragons have invested in some real crap over the years. Far too harsh on these guys
Surviva Jak is still trading and is still Profitable! Imagine that from 2009 to today their still smashing it! I am extremely happy for this couple! Deborah really has tremendous instinct for backing this couple and for defending them. So happy for em.
I see 14 ratings on amazon and google results is basically dead. I hope they enjoy the 20 pounds of profit they earn every month.
CAP
They've got a phenomenal product and I wish them the very best of luck. With the exception of Deborah, the Dragons should be ashamed of themselves.
Lol what cann just said he was out he was very polite like he always was Duncan really didn't say much only Peter and Theo were being rude
My thoughts too - looks like something you would keep handy for a lot of reasons. I'd like them to have asked about how well it works.
I have 5 first aid kits and none of them have this, they have thermal blankets. The same shot this is based on. It's nothing new.
100%. Good analogy.
My uncle who is a successful businessman told me/everyone exactly to do the latter. Apart from Covid, why are you against it? So I can feed that back :)
@@amyk9813 I’ll give a few reasons! :)
1) you hand them a paper with you’re name on it and that paper floats about awkwardly with no one knowing what to do with it. Your name therefore becomes synonymous with getting in the way or being a nuisance.
2) It gives a kind of desperate vibe, like you’re posting pictures of a missing puppy. You want to feel like you’re applying for an area you’re specialised in, not anyone who will take the time to read your cv
3) it seems conceited and arrogant, to walk into a place of business and expect them to stop and pay attention to you. Showing up in person feels like the equivalent of cutting in a line, people are waiting their turn by applying to the appropriate advert
4) everything is digital now, so handing a CV in a hard copy may look archaic and, again, cement your name as an nuisance if they don’t store hard copies
Hope that helps!
First time feeling bad for unprepared entrepreneurs... 🤦🏻♂️
They were plenty prepared. Had all the numbers and everything. The dragons were disputing the facts.
@@TheManInBlueFlames They were flappable, especially the guy stumbling over his words at 27 years old. Ultimately they were just poor vehicles for a somewhat okay product and it’s that vulnerability that made the dragons so vicious
@@xQwarl By the looks of it that product did reasonably well and they were able to launch a whole line of products in the end. I mean the fact they're still trading to this day is pretty good in itself.
@@TheManInBlueFlames to be fair, as soon as they said 38 million walkers I knew that can’t have been accurate, they should have known that wasn’t likely the right figure. But I do think the dragons picked at that a little too much.

Yes these two are young and inexperienced and naive, but they actually had an order for 10,000 of their product and they seem to be smart kids with some potential. I don’t understand why the dragons were so harsh on them. They didn’t deserve that kind of beating.
Kids?
Deborah basically said "why are you guys being walnuts?" to the other dragons

They are 300k in debt after all these years.
Stories like these guys are the reason I stay indoors and play video games
That looked a bit too much like bullying for my taste.
Wasn’t at all
I'm glad Deborah made them an offer because they wouldn't have deserved to leave with such a brutal beating. They're good people who are passionate and have a good product
As an outdoor person and avid trekker , I can tell you - I love the concept.
Only question remains is the overall quality of the end product as in will it tear off quickly if you are walking about or trying to gather firewoods .
I liked the couple and I also believed the girl was very near to tears
I think it’s more of a one off product at its price point. Sort of like a plastic rain jacket to keep in your backpack for a one off use, better than nothing and being retailed under 5P it’s worth having in your backpack
It's a survival jacket that you put on in emergencies, you don't walk around in it
Another prime example of the dragons not being decent folk. Theres a way to give criticism that doesn't have to be like what was shown here.
Ramblers, hikers, mountaineers, fishermen, search and rescue, stick 'em on life rafts, cruise liners, as a basic piece of kit for every first aid kit sold with every new car? Heck every first aid kit full stop!
Exactly. It's a survival jacket at first?
The problem is that they didn't say those stuff, that's actually a great defense honestly.
With that said, I'm not surprise that they didn't manage to defend themselves correctly, I mean, that barrage was savage, even the most confident guy would have problems after that.
Well said ! I think there is a huge market for this product , even just everyday people that might break down on a motorway and sit on the embankment for an hour waiting to be picked up by the AA , RAC etc .
You know it's going to be dramatic when there are stairs and a Dunken
Dunken only knows how to insult people...I'm a first one who would refuse to work with him on basis of his stinking attitude. I could not imagine having him holding 1% of my business..
The sharks for some reason were really overly harsh although I understand a reality check is important as well but compared to other contestants they at least had an innovative product and had asked some of the necessary questions.
well done deborah.i have always respected you.but here you have earned a new level of respect from me.you truely saw what was happening with the others being bullies.and you stood up for those 2.and you put your money where your mouth is.and im sure you gonna make a huge success with them
I feel so bad for him when he was like can u help me out 😭
yeah exactly!! I felt that too! Almost hit me in the gut!
Deborah is a big softie. She actually loves people and wants to help them. Nice to see.
@@TaxingIsThieving I wouldn’t say she’s the worst dragon though
My goodness, they received an absolute pummelling! I thought that was completely undeserved. They’ve been way more lenient on people who have been aggressive and confrontational. Hooray for Deborah. @@Mark64W - You’re welcome 😄
Some of the dragons smelt weakness in them and obviously pounced for a t.v moment. It was pretty awkward seeing the woman leaning on the guy for the rebutals, who was also bricking it and could barely form a response. He even asked her 'can you jump in and help?' - no response.
It's bizarre because usually it's Deborah attacking people for no reason.
Oh for goodness sakes, where's Jenny??? Always out when you need her...
Lovely words of encouragement Peter. 👍👍
10:38 Deborah Meaden used exactly the same lines, word for word, when Steve Jobs was pitching his iPad in the den...

@@YourLilBrother yeah true. But they could've negotiated a buyback in future. They just folded and called it a day.
I didn’t hear them say “please” at all 🤔
@@bash547 wow - a RUclips Parent. Sorry daddy.
Deborah @11:07: "I'm going to make you an offer."
The entrepreneurs: "We accept! What is it?" ;-).
The male Dragon's anger was harsh, and I'm glad Deborah stepped in to protect them.

Don't be so hard on her. She was actually still suffering from hypothermia when she got the statistics of walkers in the UK...
They have an online shop. Sell a few different things.

Why are they so angry at them! It’s really repulsive. At least they’ve produced a good product and selling. They clearly need mentoring. I hope they do well.

I don't see why it can't have more mundane applications, many products find applications for sometimes totally unrelated problems, Super glue was originally developed for gun sights before being used as a general adhesive as well as a first aid adhesive, and Sildenafil (what we now more commonly know as viagra) was first developed for angina and hypertension (high blood pressure).
