definitely brushwork. I've studied color with watercolor primaries, but am new with oil. I do LOVE the oils but right now they are still kicking my ass. lol
Thank you! Just subscribed 😁I’m a photographer by trade and have just started learning to paint. I made all the newbie mistakes of trying to blend and making it muddy. So this video is really helpful. I feel like learning to paint in an impressionist style is actually teaching me some life lessons too! Letting go of perfectionism, freeing myself up from constraints etc. I’m loving this new journey! 😊
Hi there, I’m working my way through all your videos, and your free courses too. Learning so much. Thank you hugely. All the techniques are challenging aren’t they when you first start. But after this length of time with you, I’ve come to realise the importance of applying brushstrokes cleanly, variedly (is that even a word 🤭) so finding this video has been a delight. Tomorrow im going to morston quay, north norfolk, uk, so I hope the weather is kind to me, and I can find a bit of it to simplify, with nice lights, shadows and angles and try to put into practice what you’ve been showing me. Did I say thank you 💐
1:52 exactly how I want to paint. I’m a new artist and love that kind of bold brush stroke like impressionist style but I find it hard to achieve. Can you do more tutorials for this?
There are a few videos on my channel that should help. Difficult to pick a definitive one, but the brush technique can be seen clearly in several demos.
I love all the musical metaphors, colour note is a new concept to me! 🎶 this was really informative, and yes I have to stop fiddling with the brush stroke after I place them
Traditional impressionism is made up of color notes - first notes, second notes, and third notes. If you research Henry Hensche and/or Cape Cod School of Painting you can learn more. Also, Colorists or Colorism.
I am using oil pastels probably because I like to smear it with my fingers, it gives me that kid pleasure of finger painting! But I am determined to try painting with oils, soon. I recently discovered an incredible artist, Swedish American, Berger Sandzen, sometimes called the van Gogh of the West. Have you heard of him?
Hello Malcolm, would you briefly explain or maybe do a demo on using the ‘broken colour technique ‘. I would guess it would be much more difficult keeping the colours clean . Thanks
Hi Malcolm, would your gouache painting course be suitable for someone with absolutely no painting experience? I'm enamoured by your videos and love the look of gouache, but I have never painted before, except in elementary school in the 2000s.
I appreciate your attempt, but what are color notes i already know, i 'd like to know the how...advice, technique, exemples. For instance, introduce color note, but respecting value, but giving temprerature contrast at low saturation. I dont know why, but to me seem that the title is misleading. Anyway, is more than nothing, thx
We have to start somewhere. What you are asking for is everything in one video. Not really practical. If you are looking for more painting demos start with one of the many painting demonstrations. Here's one: ruclips.net/video/ES8UcCHjL08/видео.html
Is Dewey French? You’re so organized you must be German. A wee bit. I’m a wee bit Scottish. But know from working with friend with German surnames some dna from that dna pond would be a dream come true. Easier than marrying one. Or two.
What do you struggle with more in your painting - Color mixing or Brushwork?
For me, color mixing must come before brushwork. I think I’m figuring color out, and once I’m more confident then brushwork will take center stage.
Brushwork

Brush strokes
Two also
I love this painting and lesson 😊😊
Thank you
Ive been trying so hard to learn Impressionism. I love the movement a lot! Your videos have been an HUGE HELP!
Excellent, thank you

Me too! I love those yellows and the lilacs next to them. I also want to ask @Malcom Dewey for a demo/tutorial on this painting.

I really like how you built this up. Great result and really helpful information.

@@LynnePriceStudio Good notes in helping me getting to know the key words.
Such beautiful, pure colors!
Thank you!
I know for myself it’s all about being patient too!
One of the more important lessons to be learned in painting.
Thank you for this.
My pleasure 😊
Thank you so very much for making me aware of the colour accents and use of appropriate and clean brush strokes. Love your channel!
Happy to help!
Very Useful lesson.

It's a pleasure
This topic is very interesting, let's see if I can put it into practice. Thanks Malcolm!
Go for it!
Very helpful video thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks a lot!
Question: have you ever used oil pastels, and done a demo with them? That's what I'm using and I would love to see what you do with them.
Not yet Janet, I have struggled with them years ago then got into soft pastels much more.

Hi Mona, I have gone deeper into that in my new course How to Paint Like an Impressionist.
@@MalcolmDewey will watch it for sure, thank you !
@@MalcolmDewey Is this new video already posted ? Can’t seem to find it.
@@mona2242 it's a course on my school site.
Thanks for all the instructions you provide us. In which of your courses can we learn to paint like impressionists
Thank you. Try How to Loosen Up Your Painting 👍
@@MalcolmDewey thanks I’ve already subscribed in this course. So I have to start it

I'm enamoured by your videos and love the look of gouache, but I have never painted before, except in elementary school in the 2000s.
Yes, absolutely, it does cover basics of painting too.
Are you using oil paint or acrylic?
Oils this time, but same applies to acrylics or gouache.

haha - originally French I believe, but made home in England and then the world! I can focus on something well, but the rest falls apart all around 😂
