1973 BMW 2002: A Tastefully Modified Treasure

  • This week we’re a few hours north of the Petrolicious HQ in Los Angeles as we follow Lisa and her tastefully modified E10 through the forested curves and rolling highlands of the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s her third 2002 so far, but this one was always defined as her lifetime car-a keeper-and the license plate tells you all you need to know in that regard: translated from Latin, tesoro means treasure, and after a restoration prompted by some unfortunately clumsy tow-truck maneuvering, that’s exactly what Lisa’s 2002 has become. It’s exactly as she pictured it in her head, and with a host of choice aftermarket parts from the likes of BBS, Weber, and Recaro, we imagine she’s not alone in her admiration for this classic German coupe.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much to Petrolicious I’m so very honored! Your distinguished film making is incredible! Kudo’s to the film maker! 😉
I’m grateful to Performance Technic for the use of their facility for the interview. And Thank you to 2002 Garage Werks for putting up with me as an ‘Attention to Detail’ customer! 😉 I appreciate all the hard work you helped put into TESORO. I’m forever grateful to all my friends who have supported me whether it was your positive feedback or helping me source parts for TESORO’s build.
    Happy Motoring and Drive Tastefully!

Saw this car on Jay Leno's Garage a while back. Loved it then and love it now. As an early 70's 2002 owner I can attest to the fantastic drivability and overall automotive aura these cars have, they are as fun to drive as they are to just study and admire. And for those of you who aren't familiar, this awesome 2002's caretaker Lisa, is a true car girl and petrol head. She owns a couple stunning bimmers. @@Prince-gu8or not as bad as some other cars of the same era, provided you have a rust-free example to start with. Mechanically, 2002s are very simple. Upgrading the ignition to an electronic version will eliminate the most failure-prone item, which is rue of any car with old-school points-and-condenser ignition. I put a couple hundred thousand mile on a couple of '02s with no more than routine maintenance and occasional to-be-expected repairs, like broken motor mounts (good for maybe 30k miles at a go) and gaskets, i.e. valve cover gasket, water pump gasket, oil pan and distributor housing gaskets. Those will all start to leak or ooze about every three years, but aside from the oil pan gasket are all easy to repair. Past 250000 miles, things start to wear out of course. Transmission synchros, then bearings inside. The differential might need attention, or it may go a million miles with no trouble. Shifter bushings, a pretty easy fix. All in all, mush less trouble than a 70's Porsche or any English car, maybe a little less reliable than a Mercedes. With a couple spare alternator belts I'd travel cross country in one without hesitation. They are notorious for throwing belts at random.

duoble clutching and throttle blipping is a skill too which doesn't get teached in driving schools because you don't need it anymore, but it's much more fun is like driving a stick you just get used to it but it's also nice to know that you don't always HAVE to do it like you had when manuals weren't syncroniced yet.
It's just the most rewarding feeling when you downshift a gear and you get your blip just right so that your gearlever glides in the gear seamlessly without any resistance at all :D

Great vid, great owner, great car. I owned a '72 2002 for 233k miles -- original unmodified engine (except for taking off the air pump). I love them. About this car -- I really appreciate keeping the car stock in it's appearance. But, please, Lisa, do yourself a favor and get a smaller, thicker steering wheel. It's a lot more fun. Secondly, in all these BMW 2002 vids, no one mentions the two things I loved most about them -- (1) the absolutely astonishing vision out of the "glass room." No blind spots. And (2) How well they take a corner. How they quickly "settle" into a groove and stick in the curve, giving you plenty of warning before losing grip. These cars were designed and built to go around corners. And believe me, there is no more fun than driving around corners fast in a car that has the perfect amount to oversteer.

I know how it feels to have a classic car, as an only car.
    Taking it for the rides,
    The attention they get.
The curiosity of the peoples and even cops.

This is the first Petrolicious video I've stopped for. I appreciate that it's one of my favorite cars, that it's a woman who loves it, and is comfortable in her command of what she wants in it, her knowledge and that she LOVES to drive. I trained all 3 of my daughters to do basic maintenance on their cars, so that even if they didn't choose to do their own maintenance, so they would know when a mechanic was telling the truth or trying to BS them. They still thank me.
And my wife loves her '06 Mustang GT, also a 5-speed. Recently some wrench-er at the local Ford dealership where she brought it for service commented that he couldn't believe that a woman owned and enjoyed a 5-speed GT. Pretty odd to still find someone with that attitude in the San Jose Bay Area of CA. Not sure where he grew up , but we eventually could laugh about it.

Beautiful machine, only second to the E9 when it comes to 60s and 70s BMWs for me. And the 2002 paved the way for the 3-series and further models as BMW started to make their stand in the US.

A-mazing....period - Lady, Car, and Story. The title truly says it all "Tastefully"...and arguably...Lisa did it Perfectly. This story is by far the best one yet, and my favorite.

Great car, awesome sound. My friend’s dad owned an orange one during those years when I lived in Italy. He loved using his skill to shift gears without using the clutch.

lisa, l owned 3 bmw's in the seventies, a 1972 2002,1973 2002, and 1978 320i. my favorite was the round tailight 1972. it was silver blue and i still think about it today. it was the original " pocket rocket" and influenced all the sport coupes to this day. what was great about it was the perfect combination of light weight and power..it was also easy to service and trouble free, much like the early volvos. i truely loved that car, yours is a beauty and i totally understand how you feel about it. its a true classic. thank you for a great video!!!🚀😅
