  • In this video I catch, clean and cook this species two different ways. I've had Gaftopsail Catfish fried before and it was delicious Now I'm going to taste test these catfish, one cooked with Blackened Redfish Magic and the other with Garlic, Butter and Lemon. The results were surprising to me.

I am glad to see this. We might give them a try if we catch some on vacation that is coming soon. I have heard they are okay to eat, but have never caught a large enough one to try it.

I will definitely try catfish. I'm from Hungary and our traditional fish is carp. We make soup and fried them up. We also eat pike, spinners etc lol

They taste much better fried. I caught a 6.67 lbs sailcat and ate it. It did have a few worms but I cut them out by making fish nuggets and fried them in House Autry. Really good and better than freshwater cats.

I ate a couple of hardhead cats before and they're not too bad if you fillet the skins out and remove all of the bloodlines out and soak them in vinegar and water solutions for a couple of hours and then deep fry them. My dog loves them!

I put my fish in a trash bag too to keep the cooler cleaner. Once home just dump the sail cat out of the bag onto the driveway and blast the slime off with a garden hose. Now they are ready to clean. Excellent fried, same texture as freshwater catfish.

Do you not bleed them first? Also I cut the barbs off when cleaning/washing the slime. When they are this size as well, they have a decent nugget of belly meat

Also i would highly suggest as soon as you land the fish wack the catfish on the head with a axe handle, then cut the spines off with side cutters and throw the spines in the fire or straight in the water. Then Dump the catish in your esky or Bag. These spines have barbs on them same as sting ray barbs and are designed to go in and stay in while adding toxic slime to your Wound...Ouch ! be warned folks.

I tried a 6 pounder and it had worms. My 3 cats and 2 dogs snubbed their noses at it and that's never happened before. I tried it fried and baked with minimum seasoning, for a more natural flavor. The texture was a little weird and the flavor wasn't great. I'd give it a 2 out of 10. Maybe a smaller one is better...
