    Great video Scott. I'm an electronics engineer and I've only ever worked with UN approved professional Li-Po batteries which contain protection circuits. I was not aware that one could buy Li-Pos without protection circuits, so the dangers of these without suitable external protection in pocket sized equipment must not be underestimated. Thank you for sharing this.

    These must all be newer LiPO's. I had a Blade CX helicoptor and ripped one of the wires off the battery pack and while soldering a new one on I jumped the leads on the battery and it immediately puffed up and started billowing fire out of the side of it. I had to just let it burn because I couldn't blow out the flame. This was on my old coffee table which is now at the junk yard. These new cells look like they just blow off pressure and heat without the fire, that is pretty cool. But I don't think all cells are going to give this same result. Love the channel, subscribed.

    I love LiPo batteries for my RC aircraft, they're so light and have great capacity. As soon as LiPos became widely available I immediately started downsizing my internal combustion engine collection, converting many planes to electric. I've been using and abusing LiPo batteries for years and have damaged quite a few along the way, never once has one caught fire though. I still store them in a sealed metal ammo can and only charge them when I can be around to monitor it.

    Great video. a lot of good testing and information. I do have a follow-up video for you. you should slowly charge a battery until it overcharges and then explodes. This is what happened to me unintentionally and I almost burned my house down the kitchen counters all had to be replaced and the entire house was covered in soot. I walked in at just the right time and stopped the situation. The key to a fire is having something else around that the Heat and Battery can ignite. such as inside of an RC car or inside of a cardboard box. I really think you should test this as the result will be catastrophic and more aware for people who are not. nice work!!! ~Russ

    One of simple tricks to prevent shorts is, if you have two uninsulated terminals or aligator clips or just plain stripped wires, is to cut one a bit shorter, so they are less likely to touch when they hang loose...
    Or make a knot on one wire to shorten it, which is allso a good way to mark + or to mark pin 1 on ribbon cable or something similar (but you need to untie it if it needs to pass high frequencies).

    Been using Lipos since the early 2000's. The first available for RC use(at least in the US) were the FMA/Kokam 1500mAh cells. Very expensive but a giant leap for electric powered RC. Still have some that will charge but are a ghost of them former self's, can't bring myself to toss them. Learned many lessons along the way. Never accidentally poke a cell while removing shrink wrap, never charge without a balancer as a fire can result burning down my shed(heres looking at you Astro 109 jumping cell count, I trusted that charger too much became complacent), and obviously never cut both discharge wires together. Lol! Still, best power source for high current apps.

The correct version should be "Anything can be dangerous if you throw it with enough speed" You're using "if", which means that you haven't thrown it yet - therefore you must use the work "can be" instead of "is". Also "enough" is not a proper noun, no need too add "the" before it.

      +DrScopeify No, the thin plastic shell of a removable battery is far too weak to prevent them from expanding; in fact, the best test to see if a battery is good or not is to try and spin it on a flat surface.
      Not having to use the plastic shell around the battery is saving some space and volume that would otherwise be required, something that lets your gadget be lighter and thinner.

    Most common electronics dont come with Lithium POLYMER batteries, they come with Lithium ION batteries. Lithium Polymer batteries provide more power but are less stable, but lithium ion batteries are stable like nickle metal hydride batteries while also producing a small amount of power for a very long time (in comparison).

    • @greatscottlab

      +xxpyroxx75 smart phones I suppose, there's your answer there. learn your amp draw during full use then check your amp hours or mah 1000 mah = 1 amp hour. there's a good reason buddy it's how much draw you put on the battery and the batteries capacity(amp hours) that determines how long it can go before recharging.

      @rich1051414 8 лет назад +3

      +Jeremy Lee A short burst of high current that would be rare when doing that won't damage the battery xD Additionally, at only ~4v... it will pass through the cutters without you even noticing...

      +Евгений Мельман The short circuit happens in under 1 second, so it's fine

    • @AndyHullMcPenguin
      @AndyHullMcPenguin 8 лет назад +1

      +OH MY GOD!!! The risk you haven't considered is welding the leads to the cutters and therefore shorting out the cell for much longer. Spot welding only takes a moment, and the energy density of LiPo cells make spot welding a possibility.

    Lithium batteries are great and all, but guess which battery you use when you want to abuse something and not have that battery catching fire? Lead-acid batteries are heavy as hell, but they're so forgiving.

      I don't think you have to worry about that if you have the batteries with gel type electrolyte, aka sla, or Vrla.

    • @mrjohhhnnnyyy5797

      Even more forgiving is a Ni-Fe cell, which uses KOH/NaOH dissolved in water for electrolyte.
      The worst that happens is you need to top off the electrolyte. These kind of batteries can last a lifetime.
      There are reasons both Lead Acid and Ni-Fe are still commonly used. Durability and cost. :D

    Had a thermonuclear moment with a battery today, tried to salvage a cell from an old pair of wireless headphones and may have crushed it a bit too hard while freeing it up. Definitely exciting when the cell gets rid of all of it's charge within a matter of seconds
    For future reference if anyone wants to make an old cell safe for disposal, I recommend putting a resistor in between the terminals (bypassing the protection PCB) so that it will slowly discharge all the way to 0V, otherwise the protection will stop it at around 3 Volts. Once it's really close to 0V you can just tie the 2 terminals together and throw it out and it has no chance of blowing up anymore. Generally speaking a 100 ohm resistor should be pretty good for most batteries that are near the 4V range, as the voltage drops down you can add another one in parallel which drops the resistance down to half (50ohm) and then it wont take all day. This whole process should be done near a sink or other area where it wont burn anything down in case things do go wrong when you're messing with it.
    Blowing one up definitely makes them inert but the resistor method is a lot less messy and keeps the battery sealed
